Photo: istockphoto.com
Choosing a new color for your deck—whether you paint or stain the existing wood or change the color of the decking boards with a new wood or composite material—can give your yard a refreshing makeover.
Updating your deck’s color can also help extend the useful life of your deck. Paint and stain protects the wood from rot and keeps the finish smooth and clean. Meanwhile, installing composite deck boards means less future maintenance.
Use the deck color ideas below to help you decide on the perfect color to brighten up your outdoor space and give your deck a face-lift.
1. HoneyPhoto: istockphoto.com
Honey is one of those warm deck colors that will help bring some cheer to an outdoor space. If you haven’t previously painted your deck, a semitransparent honey stain will still allow the grain of the wood to show through. The result is a protected, updated, and natural look.
2. Driftwood GrayPhoto: Lowes.com

5. WhitewashPhoto: istockphoto.com

6. Alligator GreenPhoto: Homedepot.com
Looking for bold decking paint ideas? Alligator green deck stain like this option from Olympic, available at The Home Depot, can certainly liven up a backyard and offer an interesting contrast to the color of your house, deck furniture, and decor. This will help you avoid making a common deck staining mistake and ending up with a color that doesn’t make you happy.
7. Two-TonePhoto: Homdepot.com
Deck patterns with borders offer a two-toned look. The contrast between the two colors increases the visual appeal of the deck, but it can also help with sectioning larger decks into different areas for dining, relaxing, or playing games. These Trex Transcend Composite Decking Boards are available in a range of colors to allow you to customize the look and feel of your space.
8. VariegatedPhoto: istockphoto.com
Composite decking is easier to maintain and longer lasting than wood. If you’re looking for something that mimics the natural grain of hardwood, consider choosing a variegated composite board. Variegated boards use a mix of different colors and shades to create depth and give the illusion of natural wood.
9. SlatePhoto: istockphoto.com

Your front porch sets the tone for how you and any visitors view the rest of your home. That's why a fresh coat of paint can work wonders for the area as a whole. "Your front porch is where your home makes its first impression," says Hannah Yeo, color marketing and development manager at Benjamin Moore. "With the right color, you can transform an ordinary entryway into a welcoming and inviting greeting area."
Of course, there are several factors to take into consideration when choosing a paint color for your front porch—that process should start with your landscaping. "Consider the botanicals in your garden and play off those colors," says interior designer Crystal Sinclair. "Look for colors that complement the surrounding grass and trees." Don't forget about the parts of the porch that won't be getting a fresh coat of paint. "Be sure to consider the architectural elements that you won't be painting, such as brick, stonework, and the roof," says Erika Woelfel, color expert at Behr Paint. The colors you select should complement these pre-existing features."
You'll also want to think about the amount of light your porch receives since light direction can impact the appearance of paint color. "A south-facing porch will struggle with darker colors, so it's best to use lighter shades," says Patrick O'Donnell, brand ambassador at Farrow & Ball, adding, "whereas northern light tends to bring out the cooler tones in a hue." Ready to revamp your front porch with a crisp coat of paint? These expert-approved paint colors are a great place to start.

When in doubt, draw from the colors in your surrounding landscape. "Green is a great shade for front porches because it ties in the [greenery] around the house to create a beautiful and cohesive look," says interior designer Ariel Okin. Consider a meadow-inspired green, like Behr's Back to Nature. It will warm up your front porch without stealing any focus from your gorgeous lawn.

Go with a chic and eye-catching shade of deep blue, like Benjamin Moore's Evening Dove, to create a stylish front porch scene that you can see from the street. "Blue makes a bold statement," Sinclair says.

You can always count on a creamy coat of off-white paint, like Behr's Swiss Coffee, to upgrade the ambience of your front porch. Our experts also say it plays nicely with the exterior of just about any home. "Since front porches often take up a decent amount of surface area, you want a warm but neutral hue that blends nicely with the overall exterior scheme of the house," says Woelfel.

Pale Blues

Not ready to commit to painting your entire porch? Highlight the accents with pale blue paint instead. "Front doors, ceilings, and shutters are a great place to add color," Yeo says. "Blue porch ceilings have been a long-standing tradition in many parts of the country for centuries. Whether used to keep bugs away or to help visually extend daylight by matching the color of the sky, colors like Clear Skies 2054-70 and Arctic Blue 2050-60 are popular choices."

When all else fails, our experts say you can always depend on a classic shade of navy blue paint, like Farrow & Ball's Hague Blue, to modernize your front porch. Without a terrace it is difficult to imagine a full-fledged cottage, where else can the whole family gather for a festive dinner or evening tea? Agree, it is much more pleasant to do it in a cozy beautifully decorated interior. The main difficulty is that wood is particularly affected by the effects of the weather. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically update the coverage. We will analyze how to paint a wooden veranda, what technology to follow when performing work and show beautiful photos.

Step-by-step instructions
What colors to paint the veranda
- Brown-beige
- Brown-green
- White-blue
- White-grey
- Pastel white
Wood is a natural, environmentally friendly material and therefore quickly decomposes under the influence of external factors. This must be taken into account when working. To properly paint the veranda in the country, study the photos of the interiors and read our instructions.

Consider natural humidity
Boards easily absorb water and steam, so they are not used for damp rooms. The peculiarity of the location of the extension is such that it is constantly under rain and snow. Therefore, it is very important to treat the tree with protective agents from excessive moisture, otherwise microorganisms will start in it, which will provoke decay.
Unsplash
Be mindful of outdoor temperature fluctuations
Severe temperature fluctuations also damage wood. Under the influence of the scorching sun, it shrinks, freezes in the cold and deforms when thawed. In addition, the moisture that accumulates during freezing can destroy the material from the inside.

Prevent fungus
Wooden structures are a favorite place for molds and bacteria to settle. Again, in combination with high humidity, they multiply rapidly, destroying the building in a short time.
Unsplash
Protect the outbuilding from direct sunlight
Direct sunlight has a detrimental effect on the lacquer with which the wood is coated - it becomes dull and cracks.
Unsplash
Take care of pest control
In addition to mold, there are many types of insects that also like to feast on woody substrate. Worms, larvae and other carnivores, including rats and mice, first gnaw out passages, and then completely eat the rest.

Quality Material Performance Checklist
- Moisture resistance. The composition should protect the tree from water. Otherwise, the material will deteriorate after a season.
- Frost resistance. Usually the dacha is not heated in winter, and if the veranda is open, then serious temperature changes are ensured. The coating should contain the harmful effects as much as possible.
- Protection against fungus. The primer should contain antiseptics - then no mold will be terrible. It is possible to choose a primer without an antiseptic, but then it must be applied separately.
- Sun protection. UV rays destroy the texture of the wood and spoil the varnish. To prevent this from happening, look for the appropriate markers on the label.
- Elasticity. Wood can shrink and expand. To prevent the paint from cracking and peeling, you need to choose one that has a high level of elasticity.
- Strength. The coating must be wear-resistant, since chips, scratches and dents to the walls are provided.

How to choose a wall paint color and not make a mistake: 8 important tips and expert opinion
What to buy for reliable processing and painting of the terrace? The closed terrace on the street is designed to match the house, but the boards inside can be painted differently.
Impregnation
This is the first stage of repair - treatment with antiseptic or fungicidal impregnation. Apply a thicker layer, ideally if the material is impregnated as intensively as possible. A good antiseptic is one that can penetrate to the maximum depth. Characteristics are indicated on the label.
Unsplash
Primer
Likewise: the one that penetrates deeper is better. A primer is needed to protect the material from rotting and leaking. Another primer is responsible for the adhesion of the paint to the surface.

Top coat
Various compositions and finishes are available. They are divided depending on the conditions in which the product is located. Walls, crossbars, beams and racks can be processed with any compound for outdoor woodwork.
- Acrylic and latex paints. They are easy to work with, they are harmless, do not smell and there is a large selection of different shades.
- Scuba diving. Suitable for surfaces that are frequently and intensively used.
- Oil-waxes. Expensive material, but it preserves the beauty of the wood texture better than others.

Floor finish
Separately, it is worth mentioning the paint for the floor in the outbuilding. Terrace oil and liquid plastic are best suited there. Both coatings do their job well. In addition to these compositions, you can buy paint for the terraced floor, but it will cost much more.
Conventional lacquer and film coatings for open floors are not suitable, they do not provide sufficient protection for the boards and after the first winter you will most likely have to redecorate.

1. Sand the boards
First, the surface is treated with an electric planer or abrasive disc. The top layer is removed until the boards are light. After that, they need to be sanded.
Unsplash
2. Apply antiseptic
Wood dust after the skin is properly washed off, dried and after that the surface is treated with an antiseptic. Pay special attention to the ends and hard-to-reach areas, the composition must be applied completely to the entire surface.
Pixabay
3. Prime
The impregnation must penetrate the material and dry there. After that, you can prime. The composition is applied in two or three layers, as indicated in the instructions.
4. Apply the first coat of finish
Terrace oil tends to stagnate in the package, it must be thoroughly mixed before painting. Some formulations need to be diluted, the manufacturer indicates this on the bank. It is necessary to paint over very carefully, all ends and recesses must be impregnated.
Pixabay
5. Repaint
The first coat dries in about 24 hours. After that, you can proceed to the second. Use tinted products for coating, they give a pleasant matte sheen and will retain a presentable appearance longer.
This treatment eliminates the need for re-treatment for several years. After two or three years, you can remove the finish layer and renew only it without affecting the primer and impregnation.
Pixabay
In addition to high-quality coating and properly performed work, you need to carefully consider the choice of palette. After all, the general mood of the room depends on it.
Brown-beige range
Beige is one of the most popular colors in decoration. This easily explains its advantages: a wide palette of shades, compatibility with many cold and warm tones, perfectly acts as an independent color in the interior, and as a neutral background for more active colors, such as brown. The combination of brown and beige creates a calm, relaxing atmosphere in the room. For what styles is this palette relevant? We have chosen two. This is a chalet, the style of houses in the mountains of Switzerland. Their atmosphere and comfort will be a source of inspiration. Use wood and stone in decoration. Solid wood furniture with a rough texture, complemented by cushions in covers and a plaid, a couple of stone lamps on the wall - that's what you need. Fur skins or hunting trophies, if any, will serve as decor.
And country - a universal style for a country house. To finish a country-style veranda, lacquer is best suited to emphasize the texture of wood. Put extremely simple furniture - benches, stools, a large table with massive legs. Complement the interior with textiles with a simple pattern: a cage or a floral print.
Unsplash
Brown-green range
Natural natural shades of wood, complemented by grassy green, look great in the interior of a country veranda, emphasize unity with nature and create a calm, harmonious atmosphere. The perfect combination for an eco-friendly space. Complement the veranda with a variety of plants in pots, planters or wall panels. Furniture should be massive, instead of chairs, you can use stumps, and make a table yourself from a saw cut.
Unsplash
White-blue range
What color to paint the inside of the veranda to make the interior look unusual and fresh? Choose a light azure color scheme. White as a base will help to visually expand the small extension space, create a light airy mood, and bright blue or azure will add the necessary dynamics and will remind you of the sea.
Try to decorate a room in a Mediterranean style: white walls in combination with azure blue textiles fit perfectly here.
Unsplash
White-grey palette
Gray can compete with beige as a base shade. Against a gray background, the colors look cleaner, and thanks to the wide variety of shades, you can create a full-fledged boring monochrome interior. In combination with white, this color looks quite reserved and is great for Nordic styles, such as Scandinavian. Functional, rather strict style will suit practical people. Laconic furniture, light and cold colors in the decoration - the Nordic character is best emphasized by the glazed veranda on the north side of the house.
Unsplash
White and pastel colors
When working with a pastel palette, it is better to rely on shades that are close to each other, avoiding variegation. An important step is choosing the right shade. Light pastel colors well emphasize classic conservative interiors. For example, in the English style. Upholstered furniture with carved legs is perhaps the main attribute of English houses, complement the decor with it, and also put an armchair with ears, throw a large-plaid blanket and a pile of pillows on the sofa.

What color to paint the veranda inside
The design of the veranda in the country is not limited to its decoration and furnishings, it is also desirable to paint the room. Most often, the material for arranging this zone is wood, so artwork will help not only create a unique object, but also protect the surface of the walls and floor from decay and insect attacks.
How beautiful to paint the veranda is a question that worries many owners of private houses. In fact, the scope for creativity and imagination is unlimited.
It is worth paying due attention not only to the walls, but also to the floor of the room.
Bright and positive colors will please the eye even in gloomy and inclement weather.
It is worth considering a single ensemble, which will include not only the painting of the walls and floor, but also doors, window frames, restrictive fence, steps, columns, etc. Only with attention to all the little things will a chic effect be achieved.
Any wood outside the house needs special care and attention, only in this case the buildings will delight you with their reliability, long service life and striking appearance. The topic that is put up for consideration is a very controversial, controversial and problematic topic. It will not be a secret for anyone that the use of wood in the construction of open objects is always a risk.
Natural wood becomes a "target" for many adverse effects:
- Atmospheric and residual moisture that wood absorbs and absorbs like a sponge. Often it is this factor, the penetration of moisture into the deep layers of the tree, that becomes decisive for the formation of pathogenic microflora, rot and damage to the material;
- sharp temperature changes cause changes in the geometry of the boards and believe me, not every coating withstands such an “onslaught”, the paint layer is destroyed, cracking, peeling, moving away from the main walls, bubbling;
- Natural wood inevitably tries to "feast" on various harmful fungi that grow spores deep into the wood, feeding on its life-giving juices, fibers and capable of "killing" the structure in a fairly short period of time;
- UV radiation also plays an important role in the deterioration of the material, it has a detrimental effect on the decorative and functional properties of wood, leads to drying, cracking, fading of the paint layer;
- the tree is attacked from all sides, this category boldly includes carpenter beetles, their voracious larvae, a variety of caterpillars, mice and other rodents, who are not averse to feasting on such a “delicious” piece.
Given all of the above, now you can easily determine the necessary requirements for the choice of means to create a strong material protection. What qualities should be endowed with compositions for outdoor use:
- moisture resistance, this is the most important, mandatory parameter, otherwise the building will not be able to survive even one season;
- withstand temperature fluctuations, from high to the lowest limit;
- antiseptic compositions or primers, where all protective components are already laid;
- resistant to direct sunlight and UV radiation;
- the formation of a highly elastic coating on the surface of the material, which, like a "second skin" under certain natural processes, can narrow, expand, and at the same time, without being damaged or destroyed;
- to be wear-resistant, with a sufficiently long period without wear and tear.
What I would like to note is that one composition cannot have all the properties noted, therefore it is most likely to use the complex comprehensive processing of the material. So we come to the main thing - the direct selection of funds.
- The first Antiseptics or special impregnation, CONTAINING SPECIAL FUNGICIDE COMPONENTS, cannot be dispensed with. When buying these compositions, pay attention to the areas of their use, we need products for outdoor woodworking, with deep penetration into the inner layers of wood.
- Second - you will need a PRIMER, also designed for the protection and high-quality processing of wooden surfaces. The primer is designed to create a layer from moisture getting inside the wood, to prevent the formation of putrefactive areas and destruction, and also creates excellent adhesion of the surface with the applied composition.
- Third - FINAL COATING.
For painting open buildings, the most common and frequently used compositions are:
- LATEX ACRYLIC PAINTS without strong odor, fast drying, reliable, safe, with a huge choice of any color;
- OIL WAX perfectly present and ennoble the wood structure, favorably emphasize all its advantages, preserve the ideal look of the tree, this composition costs a little more, but it's worth it;
- WATER-BASED VARNISHES (scuba) Excellent surface protection, wear resistant. It is recommended to use varnishes for outdoor work! They are distinguished by their
- properties and cost from conventional varnishes for painting indoors, keep this in mind.
And yet, for painting the floor, you should select the appropriate composition, then wall paint is not suitable, since the functions of use are different and the flooring is subject to significant mechanical stress, which cannot be said about walls. The floor of the veranda is an object of "strategic" purpose, how much it has to withstand steps, movements, natural surprises, even puddles of water from melting snow or after rain, mud from shoes, yes, you know all that yourself. In this case, having analyzed everything, the experts settled on two more suitable options, which include terrace oils and the so-called liquid plastic. But still, even though both products showed themselves from the excellent side, oil still remained more preferable.
For those who want to paint the veranda themselves, we offer a diagram of how to do it:
- All boards are carefully inspected for damage.
- We clean the surface to clean wood by grinding with an abrasive, but whoever has it, an electric planer will not be a hindrance.
- We remove all the dirt and rubbish. Boards can be washed with a hose and dried.
- We treat with an antiseptic with a brush, wetting and impregnating the surface well and at the same time do not forget about the end sides.
- After complete drying, according to the manufacturer's instructions, distribute the primer in several layers, each bringing to complete drying.
- We mix the terrace oil for several minutes, if stated in the annotation, then dilute it with water, and properly distribute it over the boards with a brush, without missing a single section, as well as the end parts, recesses. Before us, the goal is to saturate the wood with the composition as best as possible.
- We wait for time, usually a day and continue to work. We apply oil again, after adding color. This will give extraordinary beauty to the coating, matte shine and keep the color from wear and fading for a long time.
- Subsequently, after several years of use, you will be able to easily, without regrinding, renew the entire surface, without spending effort and money on cleaning up the departed composition.
When working with antiseptics containing fungicides, components that prevent wood turning blue, be sure to wear protective clothing, gloves, special goggles, respirators. Before work, make sure that households, children, pets do not have contact with these substances. Do not smoke and have lunch snacks while working, in order to avoid accidents and poisoning.

We finished painting the house. And painted the plinth. Now it remains to paint the veranda. She is now unpainted spoils the whole look. This will remain for the spring, but still. Help me decide what color to paint it so that it looks beautiful and blends with the color of the house. I don’t want a light yellow-orange like a house, it seems that it will merge. Dark brown doesn't work either. Who has any thoughts on this?
I would paint one color and separate the veranda from the house with a vertical stripe of the color of the foundation. The width of the strip must be looked at on the spot. Then, so as not to merge with the house, she applied a diamond-shaped mesh to the wall of the veranda. You can choose the color of the foundation, you can choose a different color scheme up to golden.
Then, along the edges of the vertical floor, apply thin stripes of the color used for the rhombuses.
Thank you, it's a good idea with a vertical stripe, but I still have no idea how it will look like rhombuses. just this color.
For your veranda, I would definitely choose some shade of pistachio.
no thanks, but definitely not pistachio
If you don't want to do everything in the same color, you could use the color that you have painted the foundation and the decorative element around the windows. In order not to look very dark and, most importantly, separate, make the same decorative elements the same color as the house itself, i.e. light. These two colors will overlap with each other, there will be no congestion in the color scheme.
probably yes, we will combine the same 2 colors
I also saw something like olive, pistachio - if you don't like the same tone. And so the idea with the same tone and the beating vertical stripe of the base shade seems harmonious to me.
Although in case of choosing a different shade, I would beat off the border with a brown stripe. Width must be viewed locally.

Although in the case of choosing a different shade, I would beat off the border with a brown stripe. Width must be viewed locally.
Olya, what a nice house you have both inside and out!! I like Maria's idea better. Have the rooms been renovated yet? Or did I miss it on vacation? I still have two left, I started to tear off the fireplace from the old tiles) we have an increase of 15 viet. piglet. Somehow I didn't think that in autumn there is no demand for young animals..we will raise them for meat, but it will be very physically difficult..
Thank you, Len. Well, the renovation is still in progress. We finish the little things - corners, jambs, slopes, they took up the hallway, there was not enough wallpaper. Now we are looking for the same. If we don't find it, we'll think about what to replace it with. At first, we planned to arrange a built-in closet closed there, then there would be less wallpaper. And now the plans have changed. And we don’t touch the hall yet, Sergey was going to make hives there in the winter. Then we will repair it. How was your vacation? Congratulations on the addition. True, 15 pieces is not easy, probably in winter. Is there a warm shed for them? Will you put new tiles or stone on the fireplace? I would like pictures)
How bad messages are sent, you can just die) I write the same thing a hundred times, everything hangs. I personally did not like it, according to living conditions, in relation to the Russian people, but the sea and nature, of course, are super! We have a large and warm shed made of logs, there is a place. Also, there was not enough wallpaper in the hallway) but I ordered a closet for this place, they will bring it soon.
Understood. About messages, yes, and now notifications do not come that there are new comments and new messages. It used to be more convenient for me. It is beautiful and clean in Abkhazia, we have been too, for a long time, really. I agree about attitude. With a warm barn you will not be lost. We bought other wallpapers, we didn’t find the same ones anywhere, now it seems to me that it turned out even better than if they were the same.
Painted approximately in paint.
Wow! Thanks, very clear. I finally saw how to do it
Pistachio turned out to be somewhat hypertrophied, in my opinion))) I don’t know about Greda, but I meant something softer, pastel.. Something around this. But that's not the point)) The main thing is that the TS has an understanding of what exactly you want)
Of course, I didn't mean this poisonous shade, even a little more grayish than yours. But as you correctly noted, it no longer matters.
