Modern Farmhouse Decor Done Right: 15 Amazing Spaces
Home decor is constantly evolving, and we've seen new styles emerge in response. For example, modern farmhouse decor seems to pop up in magazines and social media everywhere, but just a few decades ago, modern and farmhouse styles were completely different.
Today, modern farmhouse decor marries contemporary and country styles, creating beautiful spaces with a rustic-yet-chic aesthetic that's hard to deny. This guide features 15 of our favorite modern farmhouse decor ideas to help inspire your next home makeover. So get ready to fall in love with neutral palettes, natural materials, and clean lines as you acquaint yourself with this exquisite decor style.
What is the Modern Farmhouse Style?
Modern farmhouse decor is all about blending the old with the new to create a relaxing, inviting space. You'll see an emphasis on airy aesthetics, natural textures, and bright neutral palettes combined with clean lines and stainless steel details.
"Modern farmhouse style blends a minimal contemporary style with what most know as a traditional country style," explained Anna Franklin.
Standard features of modern farmhouse decor include:
- Traditional country elements like shiplap wall paneling and shaker-style cabinetry
- Natural materials like wool, cotton, linen, wood, rattan, and metal
- Sliding barn doors, industrial light fixtures, and other classic country accents
- Cozy elements like soft throw pillows and warm blankets
- Minimalist-inspired furniture layouts and clean lines
- Bright, neutral color palettes
"The modern farmhouse style is a tailored, updated version of the early 20th century American farmhouse. The homes of that time and place were pretty spare by nature because the people living in them were hardscrabble farmers. They lived lives born of necessity, not ornamentation. That's not to say that spare can't be beautiful, though — a simple, stripped-down aesthetic can actually be very calming," Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos told Living Cozy.
15 Examples of Modern Farmhouse Decor Done Right
Collecting decor inspiration is one of the best ways to decide how you want your space to look. You don't need experience with decor to identify an area or element you like, and once you've found the looks you want, it's easier to recreate them. Here are 15 of our favorite modern farmhouse decor pics to get you started (or, y'know, add to your collection).
1. This Dining Space with Ceiling Detailing
Credit: Erica George Dines"Pay attention to the ceiling when designing a modern farmhouse space," recommended Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos. "An ordinary sheetrock ceiling, devoid of depth, shadow, or character, is truly a wasted opportunity. You can add a little interest to the room with a beam detail, a bead-board, texture, or even use matte-finish, driftwood-toned plank detailing across the ceiling."
While traditional country homes were rooted around practicality, many of them featured handmade details in every room. However, many modern homes have moved away from quality craftsmanship and into the realm of convenience. As such, adding a bit of detailing can make a massive difference in your home's aesthetic appeal and character.
2. This Kitchen with Shaker Style Cabinets
Credit: Erica George Dines"Typically, the modern farmhouse style begins with a palette of pure white, and then elements of contrast and texture are carefully layered in to create interest and a sense of scale. Shaker style cabinets and white subway tile are often associated with this style, but utilized in a clean and modern way," said Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos.
For those who aren't up for a total cabinetry makeover, you can upgrade flat panel cabinet doors to shaker-style ones if you'd prefer a DIY project. Sometimes small changes are just what you need while saving up for more extensive renovation projects.
3. This Living Room with Exposed Beams
"Exposed beams add both character and warmth to a space and are often found in farmhouses and barns," John Linden told Living Cozy.
The seemingly-small addition of exposed wood beams can transform an uninviting or dull space into something inviting with a ton of character. And since you can choose between raw wood, light- or dark-toned finishes, or painted beams, you can still make this architectural feature your own.
4. This Dining Space with Greenery
Modern farmhouse design draws inspiration from classic country living, and part of that was being connected with nature. As such, you'll see greenery and other natural elements throughout many modern farmhouse homes, creating an aesthetic that's modern and rustic at the same time.
"Incorporating natural elements like fresh flowers, greenery, and even fruits and vegetables is a great way to add a touch of nature to your home," added John Linden.
5. This Shiplap Entryway
"Shiplap is a staple in the farmhouse style, whether it be horizontal or vertical, white or painted," said Lena Plumlee.
A simple shiplap accent wall can give your entryway, kitchen, or living room a rustic farmhouse appeal. If you're the handy type, shiplap walls are a relatively easy DIY project compared to most other home renovations. They're also an excellent option for fixer-uppers with ugly or outdated walls in one or more areas of the home.
6. This Space with a Vintage Rug
"Add a vintage rug," recommends Anna Franklin. "Similar to a reclaimed wood dining table, a vintage rug will continue to age well and will add a touch of softness to the space. For a modern farmhouse feel, look for those that are white, cream, or gray with touches of black."
If you're worried about finding the right rug, don't be — the modern farmhouse design style works well with most traditional rugs. And for those who can seem to choose between their favorite area rugs, why not spread them throughout multiple rooms for a cohesive aesthetic?
7. This Bedroom with a Barn-Style Door
Sliding barn doors have been popping up everything in farmhouse interiors, but they're particularly popular in farmhouse bedrooms. These accents look exceptionally stylish when they're painted white with today's popular X-shape molding, bringing this classic farmhouse element into the modern age. These sliding doors also add simple functionality to your space, setting your home apart from the rest.
If a literal barn-style door isn't your thing, you can still bring this look into your space. For example, you might DIY a barn door bookcase or find a barn door-style accent cabinet to inject your area with a dose of barn-inspired style.
8. This Dining Room with a Reclaimed Wood Table
"Incorporate a reclaimed wood farmhouse style dining table," suggested Anna Franklin. "This is often a statement piece of a dining room and will drive home the farmhouse aesthetic. The reclaimed wood adds an antique feel to the piece and will age beautifully over time. Another way to enhance the farmhouse feel is to select a piece with industrial elements, such as black hardware details on the tabletop or the base."
Regardless of what the rest of your space looks like, if you can add some reclaimed wood and industrial flair to the room, you'll start to see a modern farmhouse vibe. This could be your dining table in the living room, the headboard in your bedroom, or your dining table perched atop a cozy and oh-so-modern faux fur rug.
9. This Simple Kitchen
The modern farmhouse kitchen is one of the most popular ways to show off the simplicity of the style. A bright neutral palette, natural textures, and classic architectural features can make any kitchen cozier, especially if you include farmhouse furniture and design ideas.
"The beauty of the modern farmhouse style is its spare elegance," said Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos. "A simple palette of white and natural wood tones, punctuated carefully with high contrast elements of black or dark pewter, can compose a quietly beautiful space."
10. This Rustic Dining Room
Rustic elements are a must in the dining room. Whether you're lucky enough to have an expansive dining room or want to repurpose your kitchen island or countertop into a dining table, you won't find many better (or simpler) ways to capture the modern farmhouse style.
"Adding in a little rustic texture, like natural stone and vintage furniture and accessory items, to this immaculate palette always adds interest and charm to complete that farmhouse look," commented Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos.
"Incorporating rustic elements is also important," added Anna Franklin. "Instead of adding faux-distressed elements, opt for wooden, antique furniture that shows its age. It will continue to age beautifully and add authenticity to the rustic feel."
11. This Bright and Roomy Kitchen
Modern farmhouse spaces shine when they have room to breathe, especially if you can let in lots of natural light to keep the area bright and airy. Eye-catching architectural elements like high ceilings and shaker-style cabinetry work beautifully with today's open floorplans and clean, modern lines.
"Incorporate straight lines and interesting angles with larger elements like lighting, artwork, and dining chairs, while keeping the color palette and overall textiles earthy and simple," Amber Dunford recommended.
12. This Dining Room with Industrial Accents
Industrial metal accents frequently pop up in modern farmhouse decor, and they fit seamlessly with this earthy, natural look. When paired with rustic textures like exposed wood beams, industrial decor can enhance the rustic appeal and give your space more character.
For example, metal light fixtures are a common choice as they create textural interest and contrast, making the space look cozier and more inviting. Alternately, you might try industrial-style wall decor or even a small brick accent.
13. This Welcoming Living Room
Combining comfy furniture, natural textures, bright white walls, and large, open windows is a recipe for an inviting living room. And when you add a simple wood coffee table with a striking metal chandelier overhead, you're on your way to an Insta-worthy modern farmhouse living room.
"Livable comfort and family-centric themes are staples of this style, so a clean-lined sofa with overstuffed loose cushions should help you strike that balance between modern and country," Amber Dunford told Living Cozy.
14. This Living Room with Leather Accents
Living room decor is another common spot to bring in modern farmhouse design, and with good reason — you have a range of options to add a cozy country appeal. Leather accents work particularly well, as they have a distinct country appeal. The same is true for other elements like open shelving, live-edge wood, natural textures, and even modernized pieces like chic faux hide rugs.
"Textiles like leather and suede paired with industrial materials like iron and brass will add just the right amount of sternness to the lightheartedness of a country aesthetic," said Amber Dunford. "However, it's important not to overdo the style with anything too bright or sharp. Essentially, it's meant to feature traditional styles, natural, earthy colors, and bold metals incorporated with a modern twist."
15. This Living Room with Mixed Textures
"Modern farmhouse style is all about mixing and matching different materials to create an inviting and unique space. Try pairing wood with metal, stone with glass, or even different patterns and textures to add interest," John Linden told Living Cozy.
Any time you're playing with a design style born from two or more aesthetics, you have the option to bring in different textures and patterns to create depth in your space. Choose your additions carefully, and try adding a new texture if your room feels a bit lifeless or dull.
How to Get Started with Modern Farmhouse Decor
Interior design can feel overwhelming if you try to do everything at once, even for professionals. So instead, start with one room or element and a healthy dose of inspiration from around the web. And don‘t forget these three helpful tips from our experts!
1. Use Neutral Color Palettes
"Start with a neutral color palette, made up of white, gray, cream, and black," said Anna Franklin. "This will be the base of your design and is the color scheme you should follow throughout. Use the black as accents while utilizing the other neutral colors for larger aspects such as the walls. Another common element of the modern farmhouse style is exposed wood. Wood tones add warmth to this aesthetic and will add interest to the neutral color palette."
2. Stick To The Basics
"The first design priority for the modern farmhouse is 'Keep It Simple!' If you want to add a pop of color, do it with strength and intention. Pick just one strong color and use it to add excitement, but do that sparingly. Other colors can come from simple arrangements of fresh floral with plenty of greenery," Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos recommended.
3. Look for Simple Pairings
"When looking for decor for a modern country look, consider simple pairings like foraged branches in an earthenware vase or a sleek black pendant light over a weathered dining table," added April Dunford.

From California to New York, these stately homes combine the best elements of beloved and timeless styles
By Jessica Cherner
Some of the best fashion ensembles are combinations of unexpected elements. For instance, Sharon Stone’s look at the 1998 Academy Awards, where she walked the red carpet in a gleaming Vera Wang skirt and a men’s Oxford dress shirt. The loosely set rules of interior design and architecture work much in the same way: Some of the most beautiful spaces are those that combine elements from various eras, movements, and styles. Case in point: modern farmhouses whose sumptuous interiors prove that no two styles are off-limits when it comes to design. After all, opposites tend to be quite complementary.
With fresh new-builds and gut-renovated historic structures popping up across the country, now is the best time to snag an ultra-unique modern farmhouse. “Acquiring real estate and diversifying your portfolio is one of the smartest and life-enriching things you can do,” Rayni Williams, CEO and cofounder of The Beverly Hills Estates, notes.
And with undeniably modern riffs on classic farmhouse elements—bleached hardwood floors, soaring cathedral ceilings, and unpainted wood siding, among others—these part rustic, part contemporary abodes on the market are hardly bucolic. “People are definitely buying more these days,” Williams admits. “They have realized over this past year that the home is the single most important asset they should own.” We couldn’t agree more.

Bethesda, MarylandAt the base of a gently winding, sloped drive in a suburb of Washington, DC, sits a stately L-shaped structure that’s divided into four distinct parts, two of which are clad in an intricate puzzle of tricolored stone, and two in sand-hued wood siding. Set behind an English pea gravel courtyard, the six-bedroom home’s unique spaces, including a Milanese-inspired 500-bottle wine cellar, a five-car garage (plus a car lift), a pond-shaped pool, full gym, billiards room, and expansive screened-in porch (whose main wall doubles as a full-height fireplace with a dramatic stone surround), inform nearly every detail of the modern farmhouse’s aesthetic. Plus, it’s set far below the street in a densely wooded lot that offers complete privacy whether the trees are in full bloom or blanketed in a layer of snow.
Especially notable is a double-sided fireplace in the master suite that separates the sleeping quarters and the wood-paneled formal sitting room overlooking the pool deck below.

Austin, TexasJohn Covert Watson, a former apprentice of midcentury modernist genius Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the Retreat at Lick Creek Lodge with his mentor in mind. Sitting on nearly 30 acres of land outside Austin, Texas, the serene compound’s main house is an authentic representation of the Modernist movement’s belief in organic architecture, bridging the gap between human habitation and its surrounding nature. There’s also a touch of humor in the design, which, from above, appears like a splayed-out deck of playing cards.
The building’s exterior, composed of locally harvested wood that frames and supports an expansive display of windows, invites the outdoors to infuse the interiors, a move quite typical of Modernist architects. The structure may be historic, but the compound, which features a guest cottage, casita, and staff quarters, boasts all of the contemporary amenities available in any brand-new home, including a pool, fitness center, home theater, steam room, private elevator, and wet bar, to name a few.
Price: $17.5 million

Encino, CaliforniaBoston Celtics player Tristan Thompson’s Encino, California, home is on the market, but certainly not for long. Situated on 18,843 square feet of land, the NBA star’s former manse opens into a grand foyer boasting Parisian-inspired checkered marble floor that stops just short of the dining and living rooms, which flank the entryway’s main staircase.
Though the house is ultra-cool in its own right, perhaps the property’s most obvious selling point is its backyard, which features an outdoor kitchen, bar, pool, spa, and fire pit surrounded by built-in seating. Plus, there’s a spacious 1,580-square-foot two-bedroom guest house with a family room and a fully functioning kitchenette. Tomer Fridman, founder of The Fridman Group, urges buying in this area—especially right now. He says, “The real estate market in L.A. is extremely active. It has become a destination for numerous domestic buyers, particularly following 2020.”

East Hampton, New YorkMost modern farmhouses aren’t equipped with actual farm-friendly buildings. This nearly 22-acre estate just outside East Hampton Village, however, is. On the fringes of the 15,500-square-foot, 11-bedroom main house are elegant horse stables with accompanying paddocks and riding fields, and a charming working barn. Famed landscape designer Edmund Hollander created distinct areas between each of the estate’s multiple structures by way of manicured hedging and a forest of towering evergreens worth of a centuries-old English manor. In fact, the main house’s grand architecture was inspired by the city of Cotswold in the British countryside. Just behind the main house are a rectangular gunite pool, oversized spa, pool house (with a full kitchen and bedroom), a hard tennis court framed by stone courtyards, and an elegant garden.
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the estate, though, is the main house’s 3,500-square-foot lower level, whose amenities rival those of a world-class resort: a sunken spa, sauna, steam room, massage space, full gym, and spacious movie theater.
Also on the equestrian estate are two stylish guest cottages.

The house features subtle yet transformative architectural details, including custom stonework, herringbone white oak floors, and bespoke metal-framed full-height windows and doors that offer full views of the backyard’s pool from the glass front door.
The backyard, in fact, is one of the home’s most impressive features. It comprises a formal courtyard that leads to an alfresco dining room (complete with a wood-burning pizza oven), an outdoor kitchen, a lap pool and spa, and a 15-foot-tall fireplace. There’s also a pool house that doubles as a screening room.

On the other side of the 8,863-square-foot modern farmhouse is the primary suite, which is nothing short of a West Coast sanctuary with a rugged rock fireplace, private terrace, and, through the bedroom, a massive walk-in shower and soaking tub. The main house also boasts three additional en-suite bedrooms.
In addition to two guest houses, the enormous estate also has quite a few outbuildings, including a steer barn, four-stall horse stable, and tool shed. There’s also a whole additional part of the land that comprises a 3,020 square-foot, open-beam three-bedroom ranch house with sweeping views of the Cascade Mountain Range, attached and detached garages, hay shed, and the property’s original 19-century barn, which is a working cattle and hay ranch.

Farmhouse style and useful tips for applying it to the interior of the house
Relaxing atmosphere and organic textures in the family room, by Corynne Pless
Elegant farmhouse style wins the hearts of fans with its comfort and use of simple and organic forms in interior design. The main difference is the simplicity and conciseness of the atmosphere, which borders on home comfort and casual decor.
Almost any house can take on this atmosphere, regardless of location, landscape that surrounds it. The rusticity of the design allows even minimalism to be turned into a cozy environment, and a nondescript, at first glance, element to highlight.
One of the benefits of farmhouse style is its flexibility, allowing you to decorate your home with your personal collections, exclusive decorations and vintage furniture sets.
It is also common to use many windows in the construction so that users can enjoy an open view of the surroundings, because, as a rule, such houses are located in a quiet suburb or countryside, surrounded by nature and a harmonious landscape.
Exterior remodeling
Particular attention should be paid to the design of the facade, the definition of architectural elements should stand out. But the decor should be as unobtrusive as possible, light and laid-back. The main feature is the porch, where the owners have the opportunity to soak up the outdoors.
A classic and timeless solution that sets the tone for the rest of the home, if space does not allow for a large veranda around the entire property, a compact patio or balcony can be created.
A small porch is an interesting idea for a farmhouse, by Richardson Architects
Fill your terrace with a pair of rocking chairs, potted wildflowers, chic rose bushes. A good option would be the location of creeping plants: vines, vines that will wrap up the retaining pillars. Another effective way: to equip the patio with lanterns. Such lighting fixtures look most appropriate for this style.

Wood cladding
Wood accents are becoming more popular every day, and this material is the main component that makes a chic home so unusual and unique. The use of wood paneling, floors and ceilings with beams emphasizes and accentuates the classic collage.
The organic material has another advantage: even over time, the appearance does not lose its aesthetic appeal, but on the contrary, the changes look more impressive. Carefully add stone and concrete, otherwise you can spoil the whole image, turning it into a completely different picture.

In addition to the traditional French doors and windows, make sure the glass areas match the style of the country home. Modern transparent partitions spoil the naturalness and change the theme of the design. Furniture made from natural wood is also a great way to add warmth to the atmosphere.

Lightness and ease
Remember that the most basic elements of farmhouse style have their roots in economy and accessibility for finishing materials and decor. This is mostly seen in the pure white color which is traditional for the palette.
The first examples of this direction were very similar, because before there was no such availability in paints, and many homeowners could not afford them. If you want to add some color, then use light beige or cream, they work well too. But stick to the established framework in order to maintain the familiar aura.

Designing social areas
The kitchen is the heart and soul of almost any home, but it becomes even more important when it comes to country house style. A traditional farmhouse is marked by a large space that usually includes a dining area.
Keep the decor simple and lively here while keeping the color scheme neutral, feel free to include an eclectic mix of furniture. Once again, wood makes a big statement and is commonly used not only for walls and ceilings, but also for countertops.

Fabrics and fireplaces
Let's take a leap to organic and retro fabrics to infuse your home with a unique atmosphere. Cotton is clearly the preferred choice, but you can get creative, but still, be too picky about textiles.
Simple stripes and plaid patterns look great as accents, for example, use them on pillowcases to add much-needed color. Don't worry if you want to use this eclectic mix for chairs, beds and sofas, farmhouse style allows you to use these flashes wherever you want.

Farm style in a modern interior - Articles - Atmosphere of style
Farm style is not rustic, it's exactly the opposite Do you like the style that in America is also called the "barn" style? This is a style called farmer. Many probably hear about it for the first time, but nevertheless, it exists and even develops.
Modern people want to return to their roots, and designers make their dream come true and comfortable. Let's get acquainted with this style, and maybe someone will like it so much that he wants to add this style to his list of the ideal home.
What is a farm?
Everyone knows the word farm. This is a building (or complex of buildings) for living in the countryside and farming. Not to be confused with country house. A farm is something bigger than a backyard farm. Before we get to the interior of a modern farmhouse, it is necessary to have a general understanding of the house as a farm.
The first farmhouses were built of stone with thatched or tiled roofs. The beams were, of course, wooden and were not covered inside the house itself.
The farm houses themselves were divided into those that were connected to the livestock shed (these premises were called the “home bar”) . ..
to those that were connected that connected with the whole complex of sheds and barns (such farms were called “connected farms”)…
And for detached houses for housing with separate outbuildings.
Modern farmhouses are not much different in style from earlier buildings. Is it just the material and the fact that the “home bar” today has rather a formal, purely stylistic meaning.
Farm interiors
The inside of the farmhouses looked very much like ordinary country houses. The furnishings and basic style in such houses have been preserved for centuries and changed only depending on the requirements of the time.
Gradually, the fashion trends of the times and the desire to live in comfort also touched the farmers. Today, many farmhouses have interiors so modern that you can't tell from them that this house is not located in the center of a large metropolis.
Return to basics
Well, now we have come to the most important thing - what is farm style today, and why people want to have it in their apartments and private houses. It's simple - life in a metropolis is very stressful, and the desire to create for yourself a corner of unity with nature and a rural (farm) environment is understandable.
Modern designers advise (if possible) to buy unprofitable farm houses and live there, creating comfortable conditions. Well, if not, then it doesn’t matter - you can always add design elements to the interior of a city apartment that will create the impression of the interior of a farmhouse.
Not to be confused with rustic!
The main elements of the farmhouse style will be bare ceiling beams, natural (without painting) wooden furniture, a fireplace or hearth lined with natural stone, textiles made from natural materials.
Someone might say disappointedly: well, it's just a regular rustic! And it will be wrong. If rustic (rustic or country styles) are artificially introduced into modern style, then farmhouse is the opposite. Modern elements are introduced into the rustic style of the house.
Add elements from other styles to the finished interior with its bare beams, wood floor, fireplace, woven rugs and barn doors.
These may be industrial design elements. The kitchen is a great place to carry out such a project.
Furniture from the Shebbie-Shik style ...
Classic decor can complement the farm style both furniture and in separate accents, harmoniously combining with furniture of other styles.
The decades-old style of aparthotels can also be adopted into leadership and inspire a fine farmhouse dining experience.
Farm style is great because you can mix rustic and modern styles and still feel at ease. Or rather, in his house on the farm.
Farmhouse style and practicality
Farmhouse style is all practical and functional. Any element that is introduced into the interior must be considered for combination with other elements. Lighting, color palette, texture, shape - everything must be carefully and harmoniously selected.
Functionality dominates everything else in a farmhouse style interior. Furniture and storage space should take center stage and take precedence over decorative elements.
Choosing a Color
Color is just as important in farmhouse design, and the colors you choose will be critical to the overall style. Previously (on old farms) such colors as green, ocher, yellow and milky were practiced. Modern trends suggest using neutral colors.
The most practical solution would be to use the 60-30-10 rule, where white is the dominant color and the other two are up to you. Either it will be gray and black, or beige and brown. This color scheme will remind you of the good old and warm rustic classics.
Farmhouse style furniture selection
Traditional farmhouse furniture is simple and no frills wood furniture. Natural wood is an indispensable element of farm style. But here it must be said that if in rustic it is heavy and mostly monolithic furniture, then in a modern “farm” you can use furniture from the shabby chic style, classics or industrial design furniture. The type of wood and finish will depend on your desire.
You can just as easily mix furniture from different styles and materials, as long as the materials are natural.
Experiment with things like upholstered chairs, poufs, couches, bar counters and plush sofas. Feel free to use accents in the form of an introduction to the interior of pillows and blankets.
Basic and recognizable
Industrial accents
In the countryside, and especially on farms, things like galvanized buckets, lanterns have always been used ... In the design of the "farm" all these things are the inspiration of the style. It would seem trifles - but what a power in the accent!
After all, the best accent is the one that also plays a functional role.
Doors
And yet, how to distinguish the farmhouse style from all other similar styles - the same rustic or rustic? Very simple: these are elements that are common only for farms. Remember, we talked about the "barn" style? So, one of the main and recognizable elements is the door.
Modern "barn" doors can be a great addition to the interior, not only as interior doors, but also as entrance doors.
