A quick guide to create a simple dinner table setting for any occasion or holiday using tricks to make inexpensive dinner table decor look upscale.

We are not set-the-table kind of people when it comes to the every day. (I mean, more often than I probably should admit, it’s a cereal-devoured-while-sitting-on-the-couch kind of situation around here.)

But when it comes to having friends or family over for a nice meal in our dining room, there is a go-to simple formula for a dinner table setting that I’ve used for years for basically every occasion (or no specifically special occasion at all).

And I use some tricks to make inexpensive items look upscale. Some of my favorite inexpensive dinnerware and dinner table decor I’ve used for a long while came from the Better Homes & Gardens line at Walmart.

The Simple Formula for Dinner Table Decor at Any Occasion

So if ever you find yourself hosting a nice dinner and you’re stumped on how to set a simple dining room table, these are some of my favorites broken down in this post.

(P.S. You can see more info about the DIY tutorials, paint colors, and sources in our dining room makeover here.)

But first, here are some tricks to make dining table basics look upscale.

How to Make a Dinner Table Setting Look Upscale with Versatility for Every Holiday

1.

Choose Neutral Dinnerware

The best reason to stick to white, gray, beige, or black dinnerware is because it gives you the freedom to choose any color scheme you want for any occasion and any floral arrangement!

Maybe some would call neutral dishes “boring”, but by using it as a blank canvas, you have the ability to set the tone for any holiday in a simple table setting.

I love this speckled exposed clay dinnerware set that we’ve owned for a couple of years. They’re so sturdy (even with our kids banging them around), and since they’re stoneware, we can put them directly in the oven.

It’s easy to find neutral dishes at the thrift store too (even pricey, vintage types), so keep an eye out on your next thrifting trip.

2. Add a Place Setting Accent

See how versatile this speckled gray dish set is?

Add a sprig of rosemary, a handwritten place card, or a leaf at each place setting for an important holiday.

It’s definitely not something to do every day, but that one little accent makes Thanksgiving, an anniversary, or a birthday feel extra special.

We picked magnolia leaves from our yard last fall, rinsed them to put at each Thanksgiving place setting, and our oldest daughter wrote names on them with a silver permanent marker.

3. Snip What’s In Season as a Dining Room Centerpiece

Walk around your yard (or a friend/neighbor’s yard with permission) to snip whatever is in season.

Our hydrangea bushes are always bursting this time of year! And I love that they’re so easy to arrange with a few green stems in the mix. (Or you can dry hydrangeas for a simple fall dining table centerpiece.)

I just stick whatever flowers or stems I can find in a neutral vase like this clear pedestal vase.

I love cutting a few ginkgo stems from our ginkgo tree in the front yard when it turns bright yellow every fall.

Or skip the vase altogether and just spread out green stems directly on the table as a low dining room centerpiece for holidays.

Last fall, I cut a few purple leafy stems from the loropetalum bushes in our backyard and nestled in a few pears for a simple Thanksgiving centerpiece that anyone could arrange themselves.

For Christmas, I cut hemlock and cedar branches to create a low Christmas centerpiece and added in a few dried orange slices with orange pomanders I made with the girls.

I added some juniper berry branches that I snipped from a tree in our girls’ school parking lot (with permission, of course).

4. Use Candles for Glow

Just a pair of candlesticks can make a simple dinner table setting come to life. There’s something about the flicker of the flame that makes a birthday or anniversary dinner feel sort of magical.

We play a little game in our house with our girls – when the candle on the table is lit, we act fancy and practice our table manners. (My parents and grandparents did the same thing with my brother and me growing up, and it’s one of my favorite memories.)

5. Let the Food Be the Decor

You don’t have to fill up the center of the dinner table with knick knacks or clutter every open space with decor.

Let the table “breathe” and instead keep places in the center open for serving dishes or a charcuterie board.

My favorite serving dish is this acrylic multifunctional 5-in-1 cake dome that can be used as a cake stand, divided serving tray, chip & dip server, punch bowl, or serving bowl. And it works perfectly outdoors since it’s break-resistant.

I use this white footed bowl all around the house not just for serving food on the dinner table but also as a fruit bowl on our kitchen counter or for growing paper white bulbs as a winter dining table centerpiece.

This round cutting board is the perfect size and shape for making a charcuterie board for 6. I can’t believe it’s from Walmart! It looks like it came from a high end shop.

6. Opt for Black or Gold Flatware

We bust out this black flatware or gold flatware for special dinner table settings just to add a little punch of something beyond the usual silver.

It’s something so small that adds so much.

That’s our dinner table decor breakdown! It’s a lot of simple small details that add up to be something special on the occasions we want to feel fancy.

Although, don’t worry… most of the time, we’re eating messy tacos over paper plates. Just in case this post gives the impression that we eat candlelit “pinky up” meals every single day. 😉 Yeah, no. That sounds exhausting.

But doing the special dinner table setting thing is nice every so often to put down the phones, turn off the electronics, and enjoy each others’ company. Setting the table this way encourages us to do that.

Your dining room isn’t finished the moment you’ve moved all your furniture in. No room feels fully complete until it’s been adorned with décor—and the same holds true in your dining room. Yes, you may have hung art on your walls or put a pretty mirror in your space, but have you considered what décor should live on your table in between meals and dinner parties?

Thankfully, dining room table décor ideas are abound—and the options are so vast and varied that you can easily find one that suits your space. There are colorful tablescapes, sleek centerpieces, and everything in between. And the best part: dining room table décor is temporary, so you can experiment with one idea today, try another tomorrow, and continue working your way down the list for years to come.

Of course, this journey requires ample inspo—and we have plenty of it to share. Scroll on to see some of the boldest, prettiest, and most absolutely delightful dining room table décor ideas we could find.

Candlesticks make a classic addition to any dining room, and if yours are particularly pretty, let them serve as your centerpiece.

Pair a light wooden table in a sleek white room with black candlesticks and black candles to match. The bold centerpiece will attract the eye without disrupting your minimalist palette, adding contrast and cohesion to your space in equal measure.

Reagen Taylor

Most of us seek contrast in our centerpieces, and we look for bowls, vases, and candlesticks that will complement our dining room tables. But, why not look for pieces that will match it, instead?

A black bowl can look surprisingly eye-catching on a black dining room table—adding visual interest while maintaining the sleek, sophisticated palette you’ve managed to curate.

Fresh flowers are the cherry on top of any well-decorated space—and they make a stunning centerpiece. Sure, it can be a little frustrating to cycle through dining room table décor on a weekly basis, or slightly less frequently, if your flowers are particularly long-lasting. But, when the upside is a fresh, new centerpiece that looks and smells great, the tradeoff is worth it.

Yael Weiss Interiors

When you place items close together, they look related, and this rule of thumb will make crafting creative centerpieces a whole lot easier. Simply cluster your décor together tightly enough, and suddenly, the whole will look greater than the sum of its parts.

Jenn Pablo Studio

Many of us place our centerpieces in the middle of our dining room tables. After all, the word has center in its name. But, playing with asymmetry can be just as fun.

Place your centerpiece off-center, and watch as your space is transformed. Just be sure you’ve placed it off-center enough to look intentional—not accidentally unbalanced.

Don’t force yourself to choose between vases, bowls, and candlesticks if you don’t want to—simply stock up on all three. You can cluster them in the center of your table, or spread them out across it. Either way, you’re in for a dining room table that looks dynamic, textured, and uniquely your own.

Vases are a no-fail addition to any space that could use a little décor, and if you have a few stunning options worth showcasing, display them all at once. Mix and match vases of different sizes and colors, and remember that you don’t have to fill all of them with plants.

If the vases echo colors that are already in your home’s palette, they’ll fit right into your space. And if they don’t, look for options that will complement your dining room décor.

Rikki Snyder

Your dining room table décor can be exactly as sleek or fun as you want it to be, so stock up on options that suit your space. If your dining room is full of vibrant colors, don’t let that stop at your centerpiece. Stock up on vases that are equally bold, and allow them to make your palette even more dynamic.

If you do a lot of reading at your dining room table—or honestly, even if you don’t—it can be worth it to keep a few of your favorite books nearby. Opt for a small stack of your go-to reads, or keep a couple coffee table books on hand.

You can pile them next to your centerpiece, place them underneath it, or use them to replace the one you currently have on display.

Calimia Home

If you’ve paired your dining room table with a sprawling bench, consider decorating it instead. This will keep your table feeling neat and tidy while allowing you to add a touch of dynamic décor to your space.

Look for options that feel practical, like a plush throw or a few books. Décor looks out of place when it doesn’t make at least a little sense, so make sure yours suits the purpose of the bench and the room at large.

Fresh fruit is an incredibly pretty thing, so why not take advantage of your just-bought produce and turn it into a centerpiece? Fresh oranges can add a pop of color and personality to an otherwise-minimalist space, and other kinds of fruit can make just as much of an impact.

LeClair Decor

Table runners are a go-to choice for dining room décor, and there are plenty of ways to make the classic accent feel more contemporary.

Start by opting for a thinner, shorter table runner that echoes the sleekest colors in your space—yes, black is on the menu. Then, pair it with some low-profile dinnerware and some modern décor, and voila, you’ve got a surprisingly sleek tablescape on your hands.

Bespoke Only

A massive dining room table doesn’t necessarily need a large centerpiece. In fact, a smaller centerpiece might make even more of a statement since it will create such visual contrast.

That’s not to say that you can’t pair large centerpieces with large tables. You absolutely can, and should if you want to. But, if you find yourself drawn to the idea of playing with contrast, size can be a great way to do it.

Your centerpiece can be a great place to add new color to your space, but it also offers an opportunity to cement the palette you already have. Keep an eye on some of the accent shades in your space, and choose a centerpiece that matches them.

The best décor is both pretty and practical, so look for ways to integrate both into your space. Pair a lush plant with an appetizing snack tray, and watch as your dining room begins to feel even warmer and more welcoming—just be sure to replace the snacks on your snack tray. Otherwise, the décor choice isn’t actually that practical.

16 of 33

Pure Salt Interiors

Many plant-based centerpieces are either fake or in constant need of replacement—we’re looking at you, fresh flowers. But, there’s no rule that says you can’t use a lush live plant as your centerpiece instead.

Consider the lighting situation in your dining room, and look for a plant that can thrive there. Then, find a planter that suits your home’s aesthetic, and introduce the plant to your space.

Studio Peake

Often, we see candlesticks that match each other perfectly, but a less uniform set can look just as great in your space. Consider stocking up on single candlesticks that resemble each other slightly, but not perfectly, and adorn your dining room table with them.

You’ll end up with a tablescape that feels dynamic, but cohesive. And since you’re curating the set yourself, you can make it as vibrant or as sleek as you want it to be.

Bespoke Only

Dark décor may seem like a bold choice for any space, but it can look absolutely lovely in your dining room. Stock up on sleek black pieces, and watch as they transform your space.

If the rest of your room is already dark and cozy, this décor choice will leave it feeling even more grounded. And if it’s lighter or brighter, they’ll add a welcome dose of contrast to your dining room.

If your kitchen cabinets are stocked with pretty serving ware, consider displaying some of it on your dining room table. The pieces will act a little like sculptures. And since serving ware plays a key role in dining and entertaining, they’ll make intuitive sense in your space.

Gray Space Interiors

Want your dining room table to feel decorated, but not cluttered? Try simply setting the table. Put out your prettiest plates, display your boldest cloth napkins, and stock up on a few napkin rings that’ll bring your space together.

Of course, your tablescape doesn’t have to look exactly like this: maybe your shelves are lined with colorful wine glasses or your drawers are filled with antique silverware. Showcase your prettiest finds—and don’t be surprised if you suddenly start daydreaming about dinner parties.

Your centerpiece doesn’t have to be just one item—and it doesn’t have to be a cluster of items, either. Instead, it can be a pair of statement-making pieces.

Create contrast by combining a taller item with a shorter one, or create balance by pairing items of similar heights. If you focus on highlighting items you love, you’re bound to end up with a very delightful centerpiece.

22 of 33

Katie Martinez Design

Clustering décor can get intimidating. There are so many colors, shapes, sizes, and textures to consider—and that’s a lot to keep track of. So, if you’re looking for an easier way to curate a clustered centerpiece, consider constraining your palette to just one color. By cutting back on the variety you’re playing with, you’re more likely to end up with something that feels balanced and cohesive.

23 of 33

Julian Porcino

A centerpiece can be anything: a patterned vase, a piece of fruit—or even a completely useless bauble. If you find a decorative item you love looking at, give it a try.

Ultimately, you want to end up with a dining room you love spending time in, and if putting a surprisingly pretty log in the middle of your table will help you love your space more, take the risk.

24 of 33

Proem Studio

If you’re looking for a less obvious way to decorate your dining room table, consider turning your table runner sideways. Just be sure your table runner is short enough not to hit the floor when you do this, or you might want to consider buying a new option.

This can be a great way to add some color or texture to your space. And since table runners tend to be soft, the choice may leave the room feeling cozier, too.

25 of 33

LeClair Decor

If a clustered centerpiece seems unwieldy to you, consider using a tray to keep things organized. The tray will add order to your décor, keeping your dining room table feeling neat and tidy. Since it will give you another décor element to play with, it might make your space feel more dynamic, too.

26 of 33

Cathie Hong Interiors

You can put whatever you want on your dining room table. So, if your shelves are stocked with small, pretty pieces, consider putting them on display. Thanks to their small size, these pieces won’t demand much table real estate, and they can be a great way to add some flair to your space without making it feel cluttered.

27 of 33

LeClair Decor

Vases make excellent centerpieces—and bold vases make particularly great ones. If you have a statement-making vase you’re looking for an excuse to showcase, put it out. You can put a plant in it, cluster other décor around it, or leave it on its own.

28 of 33

Sarah Fultz Interiors

If your dining room is incredibly statement-making as is, don’t be afraid to leave your table bare. There’s no rule that says you have to have a centerpiece, especially if it doesn’t suit your space.

If your dining room chairs, chandelier, and wall décor are already working together in perfect harmony, perhaps the boldest—and most thoughtful—design decision you could make is to leave your table exactly the way it already is.

If you’re navigating a smaller space like a dining nook, don’t unnecessarily weigh yourself down with décor. Yes, you want your space to be pretty—but you also want it to be functional.

Look for ways to add smaller pops of visual flair—you might be surprised to discover how much of an impact a teeny-tiny vase can make.

30 of 33

Katie Hodges Design

Your tablescape is an obvious place to add color to your space, but if you’re looking for a less obvious choice, use it to add texture to your space, instead.

Display a high-contrast marble bowl, put out a carved clay vase, or showcase a plant that’s incredibly textured. All of these items will make your space feel more dynamic—and they’ll bring out some of the inherent texture in the pieces you already own.

31 of 33

Design: Whitney Campeau Interiors, Photo: Amy Bartlam

Tablescapes are totally temporary, so take advantage of this flexibility and start experimenting. If you, on a whim, feel tempted to display a bowl of bananas on your dining room table, give it a try.

Worst case scenario: It looks incredibly strange, and you have a handful of bananas to eat. Best case scenario: It looks fun, and whimsical, and exactly like you wanted it to. Where’s the loss?

32 of 33

Ashley Montgomery Design

Curating a tablescape can get overwhelming. Options are abound, and it can be hard to know which centerpiece is right for your space. Start by simply identifying a few pieces you love, and display them all at once.

If one doesn’t look right, remove it and replace it with another piece you love. Keep the focus on showcasing your favorites, and something is bound to come together.

33 of 33

Mary Patton Design

Your dining room is yours, above all else, so try to have fun with it. If you stumble upon a set of stunning rainbow candlesticks, display them—even if you haven’t bought candles for them yet. If you find a pretty porcelain pot at a garage sale, snag it and put it out there, too.

Your dining room doesn’t have to look like something you’ve seen before. Play around with it, take risks, and simply backtrack when something doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would.

Tips

No rules, eclectic, minimalist, practical - that's what table setting is all about in 2021. We have collected 8 simple ideas that you will definitely be able to repeat

"Your" set of dishes

The times when the table should have plates and cups strictly from the same service are over. A cup with a “pot-bellied” handle from a set presented by my grandmother next to a minimalist ceramic plate is excellent. Allow yourself to add another vintage milk jug brought from a flea market, and a crystal sugar bowl that was gathering dust behind the glass of the Soviet wall.

The combination of silverware and gold plates is another ban lifted in 2021. It is better to layer eclecticism on a neutral background - a pastel-colored tablecloth (although this is not accurate!).

Linen tablecloth

Pastel colored tablecloth made of natural materials is a suitable background for any set of dishes. Especially designers love a linen tablecloth for practicality and versatility.

Flax is not afraid of stains from wine, fruit and sauces. It is not necessary to iron such a tablecloth - just spread it on the table and sprinkle it with water. And, most importantly, the linen tablecloth, due to its “wrinkled” effect, is suitable for both everyday use and special occasions. It is enough to supplement it with table napkins and candlesticks.

Functional decor

It may seem that the more different textures and decor on the table, the better. In general, yes, but there are nuances. It is good if the function of the decor will be performed by all the items required for the table. For example, a ceramic figurine in the form of a bunny will be a salt shaker, and in a wicker basket there will be not artificial flowers, but bread or cutlery.

@foxinvogue

Fresh flowers

Flowers are now on the table not only on holidays. And it doesn’t have to be a huge bouquet of peonies, a fragrant twig in an IKEA glass instead of a vase is enough for magic.

@dasha__soboleva

Tableware color

It is easiest for beginners to choose white as the main color of dishes. Let the large white dishes be coasters. And then on such a “skeleton” you can “string” dishes of any color. To begin with, choose two additional colors and create your collection based on these shades, and then improvise more and more. By the way, plates in a circle, stripes and even a rhombus can also be put together.

Dining Table Runner

Runner is a strip of fabric that runs along the table along the tablecloth or along the tabletop itself. In addition to the fact that the runner is a great decoration for the dining table, it is also a very practical decor. Place main dishes, drinks and snacks on it, and the runner will protect the tablecloth or countertop from stains.

Wooden serving board

Textured wooden board in 2021 firmly took its place on the everyday and festive table. Fruits, cheeses and other snacks can be interspersed on such a board, and all this will look picturesque.

@servirovkastola_elena

Serving and table napkins

You can decorate any table (and not necessarily for a celebration, but just like that) with the help of serving napkins - cotton and linen. By the way, they can match the tablecloth or contrast with it and match the color of the dishes.

Table napkins can also be used instead of tablecloths. For example, braided. Large ones are for plates, and small ones are for cups or containers with honey and jam. Woven napkins are versatile and will look good on both glass and wooden tables.

Table setting for the holiday (50 photos)

Festive table setting is a whole art that involves following certain rules and knowing the basic norms of etiquette. The ability to rationally set the table with a clear arrangement of cutlery testifies to the taste and level of intelligence of the mistress of the house. We will talk about how beautifully and economically you can decorate the festive table in our article. For clarity, we have selected for you simple but interesting ideas with pictures and photos that will be a good help for you in this interesting and exciting process.

Choosing a tablecloth

Before serving, the tabletop is covered with a tablecloth. It should be made of high quality thick fabric. It is carefully ironed beforehand. Stains and smudges left over from previous meals are excluded. This item is washed after each use.

The color tone is selected in accordance with the general decor of the room. The most organic look are beige, cream tones, shading any color shades. A colorful or richly gilded tablecloth will require only very high-quality white dishes and impeccable crystal.

Roses are always appropriate on the festive table, they give special meaning to the celebration

Luxurious and elegant table decor in white and pink

An important role in serving the festive table is the length of the tablecloth. On parallel sides of a rectangular table, it should be the same. Ends that hang down to the floor are not recommended as they are not comfortable as guests can accidentally snag them.

In such a situation, it is necessary to provide special clips that will play the role of an additional decor. An overly short tablecloth does not look advantageous either. Choose the "golden mean".

A dark tablecloth goes well with white tableware

An interestingly designed tabletop may not be covered completely. It is enough to arrange decorative large napkins according to the number of guests. This technique creates a bright accent and serves as a unifying link for other accessories.

Equally interesting are several tablecloths, usually in contrasting colors, which intersect on the table in any order and create a picturesque look.

If a tablecloth is not used in table decoration, beautiful decorative napkins must be placed under the plates

Beautiful table setting at home: ideas, photos

One of the main stages of table setting is the correct arrangement of plates according to the number of guests. As a rule, three of their varieties are used - dining room, snack bar, soup. Place at regular intervals.

Then you need to place the cutlery, choosing their types depending on the menu. For basic accessories, the classic scheme is observed. The place for the knife is located on the right side of the plate. The fork is placed with the tines up on the left. The dessert spoon should lie perpendicular to the knife behind the plate.

Types of glasses

You need to know that special glasses are used for a particular alcoholic drink:

  • An elongated “flute” shape is designed for champagne, allowing you to admire the play of bubbles inside the liquid.
  • Red wines are poured into glasses on a thin stem with a rounded voluminous bottom, tapering upwards. But there are glasses even for individual varieties.
  • White wine oriented glasses are distinguished by their elongated oval shape.
  • Cognac low glass has a thick bottom and extension at the top. Suitable for whisky too.
  • A martini glass with a graceful long stem is easily recognizable by its tapered shape.

Napkin arrangement

Apart from decorative items, two main types of napkins are used when setting the table - linen (for knees) and paper (for hands).

Fabrics are beautifully folded or rolled and fastened with a special ring. Placed on a plate. It is advisable to put an elegant sign next to it, on which they write a wish or indicate the name of the guest. Can be complemented with an elegant miniature flower.

The perfect combination of bright colors in table decor

Several special holders are placed under paper napkins, available to any guest. Be sure to have convenient containers with spices on the table. The main ones are salt and pepper. If sauce is prepared separately for dishes, then it is placed in a convenient aesthetic dish.

Additional table decor (photo)

Various decorative items complete the festive table setting, among which the most unexpected options can be noted:

  1. Fruits . They are stacked not only in vases, but also create original compositions by placing them on a beautiful stand, greenery or a lace napkin.
  2. Balls . Decorators are increasingly including balloons in the festive decoration of the table. They can be located in the center or near each plate.
  3. Paper figurines . The ability to create figures in the origami style from colored, white or craft paper allows you to make a themed table design.
  4. Branches . By placing graceful twigs in vases or glass glasses and supplementing them with candles, you can bring a little mysticism to the atmosphere of a festive dinner. The decorative coloring of the branches with mother-of-pearl or fluorescent paint will enhance.
  5. Feathers . The hit of recent years is the addition of feathers to the serving. They must be thoroughly disinfected.
  6. Greenery . In different versions, greenery in the form of single twigs, garlands, wreaths, bouquets serves as a bright table decoration.
  7. Bottles . You can use glass bottles of an interesting shape or with unusual color shades not only as vases, but also as a separate decorative element.
  8. Cans . Decorated with an openwork slot, tin cans turn into charming candlesticks. You can decorate these items with feathers, a shiny cord, an openwork ribbon and put them on the table as an unusual flower pot.

When serving, the festive table is completed by a variety of decorative details. They should not create a sense of chaos, located in strict accordance with the overall composition and a certain style.

Shabby chic

The main features of shabby chic are cream, white, pink, beige, powdery shades. Antique crockery with scuffs is used. Present in the serving candelabra with candles, flowers, decorative ornaments, sustained in a single decor. On textiles and dishes there is a floral, as if faded, small pattern.

Complements the overall entourage with wooden furniture with wrought iron details, vintage lace or natural linen napkins with a striped print. Photo frames, openwork planters and original flowerpots add additional decor.

Glamor

The main differences of the refined glamor style are luxurious materials, rhinestones, elegant shapes of vases, furs and wine glasses. An abundance of feathers, mirrors and crystal is welcomed in the design of the table with your own hands in this popular style. Silk fabrics, silver cutlery, glossy surfaces are used.

To decorate the table, small sculptures, crystal candlesticks, complemented by pendants are installed. Snow-white lace is shaded with hints of black.
