12 Classic Stair Runner Ideas and Where to Buy Them -
Adding a classic stair runner is the perfect way to add a beautiful focal point to your interior design. Here, I’ll give you classic stair runner ideas and my favorite places to buy them!
Why add a stair runner to your staircase?
Stair runners are a hidden gem in home decor. And while there are a number of reasons to add stair runners to your home, I love that they offer the perfect welcoming touch to any staircase making your space feel instantly homey.
It also offers protection from normal wear and tear and makes walking up and down your stairs more comfortable and safer.
How to choose a stair runner for your stairs?
Whether you have a straight staircase, grand staircase, or are looking to add a runner to your basement stairs, choosing the right one can be overwhelming.
There are so many different styles of staircase runners. You can choose to have a solid color, have a patterned stair, or multicolored to match the color scheme of your home.
I’ll show some examples that use contrasting or complimenting colors to work with the home’s walls and furniture, and some that match with the home’s area rugs. There is most definitely a style for you within this list.
Where to buy carpet stair runners for your staircase?
Picking stair runners can be tricky, but you don’t have to be an interior designer to make that choice. Plus, you don’t even have to break the bank!
The first thing to remember is that you can get runners for stairs almost anywhere. A lot offer free shipping.
Some of my favorites are from the Home Depot, Walmart, and Target! Thats because for me, they’re within driving distance. And if for instance, the runner looked different online and I want to return it, I can easily drive to one of these stores without having to pay return shipping. This can sometimes be more than the rug itself!
Some other great place to shop is Overstock, Runrug, Wayfair, Lowes, and Rugsusa! There are so many places to buy a carpet runners. It may feel overwhelming, but I’ll try to narrow it down.
Ok, as promised, let’s get started on the 12 stair runners ideas and where you can buy them!
Style 1. Farmhouse Style runner
Mountain West InteriorsThis modern stair runner gives the perfect farmhouse vibes. The texture and neutral-tones mixed with this traditional chevron pattern perfectly tie in the modern farmhouse style! check out this one from (affiliate) the home depot.
Style 2. Moroccan Style runner
Runrug!The Moroccan style has different colors with more floral patterns and red colors that might work perfectly for your home!
The dark tones add some class and it would work well with an earthy-toned decor! It would be a fun design element to add to your neutral deign palette. This one is found on (affiliate) the home depot
Style 3. Classic Jute stair runner
Another good option from stair runner rugs is Jute. The natural fibers, neutral tones, and simple design go with just about every style.
A common question people often ask is whether or not jute stair carpets will come un-braided. The answer is that it really depends on the quality of the jute rug and how much foot traffic the stair case gets.
If you have young children that are often running up and down the stairs, the fibers may come undone and may not e the best option for you. But if you love the look of Jute and will tread lightly, this may be the perfect fit.
The picture above is an example of the kinds of classic jute area rugs and stair rug runners Wayfair has to offer!
Style 4. Striped Coastal runner
carpetworkroom.comA striped runner is the perfect stair runner for staircases looking for a coastal inspired design. The wide stripes and vibrant blues give a perfect beauty feel! This similar rug from Rugsusa would look perfect with light wood stairs and white spindles.
Style 5. Geometric pattern stair runner
Dash & AlbertThere are so many ways to use geometric patterns. A darker pattern like this example gives contrast to the lighter stairs and walls.
A runner like this one can be found on (affiliate) Wayfair. It can also be mix-matched with other patterns like this rug to carry out the theme! A great way to mix patterns with rugs is to choose coordinating colors and mix large and small print.
If both prints are large, they complete for attention with one another making them both feel too busy. But instead, if one is small and the other is large, one gets the attention and both compliment each other.
Style 6. Bold Pattern
Another staircase runner idea is one that will add a pop of color in your house! A bold pattern and vibrant colors similar to this one at (affiliate) Target can be really stunning!
It is a different take on how to decorate with stair runners, turning a rather bland area of your home into a show stopper
Style 7. Distressed blue stair runner
RunrugIf you love vintage style rugs, check out this rug from (affiiate) Target. This distressed rug gives the overall look of a vintage find, but is brand new.

Style 9. Mid Century Modern runner

I think this would fit perfectly in a mid-century modern home! If your looking for a new runner and love mid-century mod, your best bet is too find find a runner with minimalistic design, clean lines, and neutral material – like wool carpet.
Style 10. Eclectic and fun stair runner
RejuvenationIf you are going for an eclectic style, finding a pattern that is busy yet purposeful is the way to go. This example from (affiliate) Rejuvenation has muted tones that can be built off of, but the pattern is a statement of its own!
OverstockI found this patterned rug from Overstock, unfortinely it’s sold out. I did find a similar one on Wayfair. and I think has the perfect minimalist pattern. You can also find it in all white with black pattern. This could be the perfect touch of pattern to a minimalist decorated house.
Style 12. Contemporary stair runner
AmazonA contemporary style tends to meld a few styles into it to make it today’s trend. I think that this example from Amazon shows that.
It has breaded material woven together in creating simple striped all while generating a geometric pattern. It becomes a hidden little eye-catching aspect of the home’s decor! Plus, it’s neutral enough to compliment any interior style.
Should I order a custom runner?
There are other factors to consider when trying to decide which stair runners to choose form. For instance, my house was built in the 1700s and the stairs weren’t built with standard measurments.
So something to consider is the width of your stairs before order a stair runner. A lot of manufacturers will offer different widths and lengths. This is helpful because all of our stairs are different lengths and making sure you have enough material before starting a project is important.
You should also consider the height of the runner before ordering as well. If the pile is too high, walking up and down the stairs may become dangerous. It can be easy to stumble if your foot stagers. If all else fails, you can always order a custom runner vs a pre-made runner.
Can I bind my own carpet runner?
If ordering a custom runner isn’t in your price range, you can always trim the width of the runner yourself and re-attach the binding. I know it might feel like this stair runner project is getting more and more complicated, but I promise, it’s simpler than you think.
I actaully did this because I wanted this specific red oriental rug that didn’t come in other smaller widths, so I trimmed it down and reattached the binding. You can check out how to bind carpet edges here.
Do all stairs need a carpet runner?
I have 4 stair cases in my home. One main staircase, one back that leads to our guest room, a basement staircase, and an attic staircase. Not all need a runner, but it’s a good idea for a few different reasons.
- It keeps your stairs from ware and tear and stains.
- It makes your stairs more comfortable to walk on.
- It can improve the safety by adding grip to your stairs.
Pin later!
Which Material is best for a stairs carpet runner?
It’s important to get the best material you can for a stairs runner, especially if it’s a high traffic area. Synthetic materials are some of the most durrable materials you can buy and make some of the best carpets. For instance, polyester and nylon. Also, tightly woven wool is another great option when trying to find the best source for material.
Do I need padding under my stairs runner?
Yes, you must add rug pads to each of the stair treads on your staircase. Adding carpet padding helps to minimize the stress on your floor and also helps to control the noise from walking up and down.
Hard surfaces can be quite uncomfortable to walk on frequently. By adding rug pads, you’re creating a cushion, making your stairs more comfortable to walk on. It also can minimize the stains sinking through your rug and damaging the hardwood flooring.
How wide should my stair runner be?
The width of your runner depends on how wide your stairs are. Standard stairs are about 36in wide. This would mean your runner should be about 28inches wide.
This would leave you with about 4 inches on either side of the runner. The edge of the stair to the carpet should measure at least four inches, but can vary up to 7 inches. Anymore than that and it’ll look like the runner is too small for the width of the stairs.
If you don’t have standard stairs, don’t instantly think you have to order a custom stair runner. Many manufacturers offer different widths for this specific reason.
Stairs can very in width from about 36in all the way up to 44in. So, try googling the exact measurements you need. You’ll be surprised with how many options you’ll find.

How to install carpet on stairs
How to choose the right carpet for stairs?
Carpet, unlike carpet, does not have a clear pattern. This expands the possibilities of its use: you can fix it in any space, even in the narrowest one. Before finishing the stairs, you first need to consider what material will be used. In addition, you need to calculate the required area of the carpet. When choosing and ordering carpet for the design of stairs, you need to consider several points:
- First of all, this is the material from which this coating is made. It is important that it can withstand wear and tear, because the load on it will be increased. In addition, the pile should be easy to clean. Therefore, it is not recommended to fix woolen coatings - they quickly get dirty and are difficult to clean.
- The next item is the lining. It should not be very thick, otherwise the carpet will loosely fit the steps.
- The covering pile must be fire resistant and non-slip. Ideally, these parameters correspond to models made of rubber.
- Ideal for cladding stairs suitable artificial materials - polyamide, polypropylene.
The durability of the carpet is due to its special structure: first, the fibers are attached to the primary base, and a fixing layer is placed on top of them. And the topmost layer is the secondary basis. This layering is what makes carpet so durable.
Rugs need regular cleaning just like regular carpets. Twice a week it is vacuumed, and in case of heavy pollution, wet cleaning is carried out.
Calculation of material
The required number of carpets depends on whether it will cover the whole staircase or fragmentary (ie cover only the surface of each step).
Calculation starts from the top level. It is necessary to sum the treads and risers. 3-4 centimeters are usually added to the stock. The simplest calculation technology is to measure the largest step and multiply this value by the total number of steps. The advantage is that with such a mathematical calculation technique, the allowances formed during the cutting of the carpet are immediately taken into account.
If the staircase in the house is spiral, the measurement is taken along the outer edge. At the same time, the width of your carpet must be corresponding to the widest step. If the staircase in your house is open, then when measuring, 4 centimeters are added to the width of your carpet, calculated for the hem.
Selecting the right tools and materials
Fastening a soft carpet on the steps of a staircase in a private house begins with the search for tools and consumables. So, you will definitely need:
- Openwork saw;
- Construction stapler and staples for it;
- Roller chisel;
- Hammer;
- Scissors;
- Construction knife.
One day before the start of installation work, the carpet must be laid out so that it straightens out. Attach the carpet to the stairs should be in a warm room, the temperature of which is not less than 15 degrees. The ladder itself is pre-vacuumed, removing small contaminants. And if the steps are concrete, they are covered with a layer of fresh paint.
How and with what to fix the carpet on the stairs?
There are many easy ways to attach a walkway to a ladder. The main ones are:
- Adhesive fixing. A reliable method that guarantees high-quality fixation of the carpet to the steps of the stairs. The glue will not allow the coating to crawl under your feet while walking.
- Fastening with double-sided tape. This method allows you to save the reverse side of the carpet from damage by glue. In addition, the coating, which was fixed with adhesive tape, can be easily replaced with another one if necessary. The only thing is that the fixation will not be strong enough. This will become especially noticeable after several months of use.
- Fasteners with nails and snaps. Another reliable way to attach carpet. True, it will be difficult to replace the carpet later. In addition, both the material and your staircase will suffer.
- Using a carpet holder. A common technology that will ensure the safety of the carpet, easy replacement of the coating and a snug fit of the material to the steps.
- Fix it with clamping rails. Reiki can be bought or made independently. But manually making exactly the same slats is quite difficult.
- Clamp fixing. This method involves "driving" the carpet into the slots, which are located on a fixed rail (it is fixed at the bottom corners of the risers). This method is more decorative than practical.
Let's take a closer look at how to fix the purchased carpet with each of the listed methods.
Adhesive
Applying adhesive to secure carpet to steps is a simple and common method of installation. The main and only advantage of the adhesive method is the tight fit of the carpet to the stairs. It will not move when walking, wrinkle and bend around the edges. But glue has five significant drawbacks:
- The carpet, which is attached with glue, sticks to the steps literally tightly. Therefore, it will be difficult to replace it. To tear the material from the stairs, you will have to use tools;
- The next drawback follows from the first one - the stripped carpet is no longer suitable for re-assembly. Therefore, the use of glue is not at all an economical option;
- When dismantling the carpet, not only the material deteriorates, but also the steps themselves. And some types of floor, for example, parquet, are not restored at all after that;
- Carpets smeared with glue cannot be dry-cleaned - they will simply refuse you. This creates additional difficulties with the care of the pile;
- Due to the fact that the rug cannot be moved or re-layed, it will deteriorate quickly.
Therefore, the decision to fix the carpet with glue is not practical, rational.
With nails and tacks
Carpet in the house can be fixed on the stairs with ordinary nails and tacks. Both fasteners perfectly attach the material, preventing it from moving or moving. Unfortunately, there were some shortcomings here too:
- Driving in nails or tacks inevitably leaves holes in both stairs and carpet. And when replacing the carpet, you will have to make new holes, which almost never coincide with the previous ones.
- The method is only suitable for wooden stairs. After all, breaking through concrete, marble or glass with a nail, and even more so with a button, will definitely not work. And since stairs are often made of expensive wood that has undergone high-quality processing and varnishing, few people want to spoil it with nails.
- Difficulties with dismantling. Removing nails is a laborious long process.
Tape
The next method to secure carpet. Double-sided tape will not spoil the surface of the fabric and steps, so the method can be called gentle. The disadvantages of using adhesive tape are:
- Weak fixation. In fact, the carpet path will be fixed only on thin strips of adhesive tape. They will not provide a complete fit of the material. In addition, the structure of the stairs implies the presence of vertical sections, flights of stairs. All this leads to the fact that the carpet is very likely to move out;
- Adhesive tape, even the highest quality, loses its original stickiness over time. This will cause the carpet to peel off.
Since stairs are considered a high risk area, securing your carpet with duct tape is not a good idea. It is necessary to ensure its "reinforced concrete" fixation, since this is a security issue.
Clamping rails
Clamping rails are a handy device with which you can fix the track to the straight steps of a wooden staircase. You can find them at a hardware store, or you can make your own. The installation principle is as follows:
- The wooden rail is installed in the corner between the risers and the tread. Installation is carried out with a gap. It should be less than the thickness of the carpet itself.
- The rail is nailed to the steps with ordinary nails, screws or other fasteners. It depends on the rail material.
Lathing is one of the best methods, and it stays very firmly on the stairs. At the same time, it can be easily removed - you need to unscrew the screws and remove the rail.
If we consider the disadvantages of slatted fasteners, we can distinguish the following:
- If wooden slats are not treated and fixed as they are, they will be subject to attack by rodents, insects, and decay. This will lead to rapid wear of fixtures;
- If you make the slats yourself, it will be difficult to achieve the perfect similarity of each slat to each other. And their specific appearance does not always fit the surrounding interior. But for the folk style, homemade slats will come in handy;
- Wood is less durable than metal. Therefore, for reliable fastening, you will have to take a thick wooden plank;
- Wood can deform under the influence of moisture and temperature.
With clips
You can fasten the canvas with clips as follows:
- At the junction located between the treads and the riser, a special metal (sometimes wood) structure is attached, which is a rail with a slot. The width of this gap is equal to twice the thickness of the carpet;
- With the help of an ordinary chisel, the carpet path is pushed into this slot on the rail.
This method is often combined with glue or double-sided tape. Clamps are a good option, but as an independent fastening it is rather weak. Carpet with too much load can simply fly out of the clips.
The advantage of the clips is the easy replacement of the carpet, no installation marks on the steps. The only thing is that noticeable folds form on the carpet itself. And if spikes are mounted in the rail, then there are also multiple holes.
Carpet holders
Metal holder for upholstered stair tread is a popular way to secure carpet. In terms of convenience, reliability and its decorative effect, it leads among the rest. The carpet holder is a simple construction consisting of several components:
- A bar or tube that presses and holds the fabric on the steps. This part of the holder is called the stem;
- Fasteners that secure the rod to the ladder;
- Decorative metal rod ends. In addition to the aesthetic role, the tips enhance the fixation of the rod;
- Fasteners used to fasten the fasteners to the stair treads.
The use of carpet holders has the following significant advantages:
- Easy installation and dismantling of the track;
- Tight hold;
- Carpet holders will prevent falls from the stairs, making it safe to use;
- Damage to the carpet and the stair structure itself is excluded;
- You can change the carpet or wash it at any time. You can purchase two (or more) canvases that will replace each other;
- Easy care and cleaning.
Remove the rod to remove the carpet from the stairs. Then you can lay a new canvas, again pressing with rods. Thus, carpet holders are the best way to fix the carpet.
Carpet holder design
Modern carpet holders are made from non-ferrous metals and their alloys. On the shelves of the hardware store you can find the following clamps:
- Brass;
- Copper;
- Stainless steel;
- Bronze;
- metal;
- Dural.
The design of the carpet holders is quite bright and even luxurious, especially if they are made in gold or silver. These devices fit into any design style: gothic, classic, modern, country, folk, hi-tech, etc.
Rules for fastening the carpet on different types of stairs
Before you begin to attach soft carpet to the steps, you should find out the rules and recommendations that are suitable for different types of stairs.
When we walk on stairs, regardless of the direction of movement, the load on the feet in any case goes down. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the mechanical load on the base of the covered canvas. To do this, the material is laid so that the fibers are directed downwards. To understand where the bottom and top of the pile are, you can use a little trick: a light hammer with a short handle pointing upwards will fall in the direction of the fibers from a short distance from the canvas.
The next rule concerns the estimation of the amount of material required. It all starts with measuring the width of the flight of stairs. The width of the treads in most cases is not constant, so you need to measure each separately. If the staircase is open, then six centimeters are additionally added to the width, designed for further bending of the edges of the material. Then you need to measure the length of the stairs. For this, a thread is taken, which is laid from the topmost step straight to the bottom. After that, 25 millimeters are added for each step unit (this is necessary to take into account the lining).
If you plan to lay a fabric with a pattern, you need to create a margin for compatibility between the middle of the treads and the ornament itself.
To determine the number of linear meters of carpet to be laid, divide the length of the installation by the number of panels into which a regular carpet can be cut (taking into account the width of the rolls). Of course, the value will be approximate, because the joints must be located in the corners of the risers and steps. So, the upper end should fit into the rear edge of the step, and the bottom should be cut off at the lower edges of the riser. Thus, for certain types of soft carpet, only an individual calculation is used.
The installation methods of the decking also depend on the design of your ladder structure, as well as on the shape of the treads. For example, it is simply unrealistic to cover a staircase with winder steps with a solid carpet. For continuous covering, only designs with rectangular steps are suitable. In other cases, only fragmented patterns have to be attached.
There is a small construction trick to help the carpet wear evenly. On the topmost step, you should tuck from one to one and a half meters of fabric. And after a year of operation, deploy it and move it down.
If your house has a spiral staircase, then it will be a little more difficult to cover it from top to bottom, as well as from the end to the second edge. You will have to work with the treads separately. In this case, the clamps (metal rails with a slot) are fixed in the same way as on straight structures. Reiki are nailed from the ends of the steps. When covering the fabric from top to bottom, cut off individual fragments for misconduct in turn and fix them. We must not forget about the direction of the pile - it should always be the same (i.e. directed straight down).
Caring for your upholstery
How to care for your upholstered carpet is usually indicated in the manufacturer's instructions. Most paths can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or chemical cleaners. The only thing is that during wet cleaning it is important to remove absolutely all moisture from the pile. After all, the remaining water will easily penetrate under the carpet and provoke the development of mold. This also applies to carpets that are attached with glue. It is not recommended to allow contact of glue and water.
The best way to clean a carpet is to take it apart and clean it entirely. Therefore, the easiest way to clean is not a solid canvas, but a fragmented one. The fluff pads can simply be removed from the steps and run in the washing machine. As a rule, for washing such fabrics, a special mode with a low number of revolutions is provided.
Carpets on outdoor stairs
If carpet is to be installed on an outdoor staircase, it is usually laid from the wall to the railing. On closed stairs - from wall to wall.
If you want to lay the canvas so that it can be easily removed and moved in the future, it is better to lay a carpet that covers only the central sections of the steps. And the surfaces on the sides are varnished or a layer of fresh paint.
To ensure uniform wear of the carpet, you can cheat a little: for this, 1-1.5 meters of carpet are wrapped on the highest step. And in a year or a year and a half, the track can simply be shifted down.
Are carpets laid in offices, hotels, palaces?
Yes, they do. Despite the fact that in such places people most often walk in shoes, walking on a soft and warm floor is much more pleasant than walking on a cold concrete platform.
In addition, carpets in hotels or palaces are primarily decorative. A long soft canvas spread all over the corridor and passing to the stairs looks impressive. At the same time, the safety of using the ladder increases: slipping and falling are excluded.
Carpet is a great decoration for any staircase. The soft pile surface increases comfort when walking on steps, reduces noise, and reduces the risk of injury to the staircase structure. But all this is achieved only with the correct fixing of the material. It is often difficult to secure the fabric, but the use of modern carpet holders usually solves any problems.
Rubber paving slabs
Tire recycling plants are the place where, thanks to unique technologies, rubber paving slabs are born. Together with the release of the necessary and demanded products, important environmental protection tasks are solved.
Methods for producing paving slabs from crumb rubber
Paving slabs have a rubber filler, which is obtained by crushing old tires into fine powder or granules. It takes very little time for the crumbly mass to turn into a practical product that attracts buyers with a variety of color shades. Color saturation takes place in a special mixer, where the crumb is mixed with a bright pigment, titanium dioxide and a polyurethane binder. The resulting mixture will take its place in the top layer of the tile. The bottom layer gives the product cushioning properties, it consists of large unpainted granules.
The pressing method affects the quality of the tiles. Polymerization at room temperature (cold pressing) takes longer than hot pressing. But in the end they get a crumb, reliably impregnated and seized with glue.
Technical characteristics of rubber tile paving
The scope of products is quite extensive. It applies to schools and kindergartens. This is due to the environmental friendliness and safety of products. It is appropriate to lay the tile on playgrounds and in sports halls, as it softens the blows when falling during physical education classes. The flooring withstands large temperature differences, so it is recommended for indoor and outdoor use. High load resistance makes it ideal for car enthusiasts. The anti-slip and quick-drying surface attracts the owners of swimming pools, saunas and baths. As a street covering, paving rubber tiles are ideal for a private house or cottage. Beautiful garden paths are laid out from it, on which you feel comfortable and safe all year round. The rough flooring in the winter is completely non-slippery and is perfectly cleared of snow. Good reviews are based on rubber stair climbs and descents. In the private sector, multi-colored steps are practiced, which are madly in love with children.
Rubber paving slabs, in addition to differences in colors, have different shapes and thicknesses. The aesthetic appeal of the products is given by all kinds of drawings and patterns applied to the top layer.
Any solid base can be used under rubber paving slabs. It can be laid on soil, asphalt, wood or concrete screed. When laying on the ground, it is recommended to remove the top layer, compact it and fill it with rubble, and use a cement-sand mixture as a substrate. The curb installed along the edges of the track adds strength to the structure, and gives the work a finished look. For garden paths, it is best to buy tiles that are connected using bushings. This small detail prevents the products from moving. For laying temporary coatings, manufacturers offer to purchase ReziPlit, which is a module and connecting elements.
The rubber paving slab has a long service life, and its excellent technical characteristics predict a great future for it. On the streets of large cities, tiles are laid out not only on sidewalks, but also between tram tracks. This ensures a tight connection between the tracks and the road. Such an innovation is not only beautiful, but also reliable, since the products do not crumble and do not break.
