Blue and black interior design

Trendy and Dashing Interiors in Blue and Black

The classic color scheme of white and blue is a combination that is perennially popular and has been so for a long, long time now. Everyone loves the idea of a room in white and blue because it is so very flexible and allows you to use a wide range of styles. But it is time to give this classic color scheme a bold new twist by replacing the white in the combination with a color on the opposite end of the spectrum – black. Yes, this year, give the white backdrop a break and use black in its place to shape a home that is unique, smart and still allows you to use blue in all its beauty. It is time for black and blue interiors!

In world where we have plenty of white when it comes to living room, bedroom and kitchen backdrops, adding a bit of black to the mix makes a big impact indeed. This does not mean you have to do away with all other neutral hues in the room. Just usher in a bit of black and do so without disturbing the theme of the room and you have a space that feels both relaxing and sophisticated at the same time. A perfect color duo that is great for modern homes.

Combine it with White

Just because you are moving away from the classic color scheme, that does not mean you have to shun white completely. Instead you can just add black to the existing setting to give the room a more vibrant and modern vibe. In the white, open plan living area, black and blue color combination can be used to delineate the dining area or living room without adding colors that feel ungainly. It is all about getting the balance between the hues spot on. From cabinets and doors to décor and accessories, you can use pretty much anything to add black to the setting.

Embrace Lighter Shades of Blue

While navy blue and black is a popular color combination, you can go down a much more pleasant route by replacing the darker shades of blue with lighter ones. Light blue and black might not feel all that bold, but it still has plenty of appeal in the eclectic, Mediterranean and Scandinavian style spaces. Try out different shades of blue in the room before you settle on your favorite, even as black anchors the room in an efficient fashion.

Styles like nautical, Scandinavian and eclectic are easy to create here while contemporary styled rooms feel even more special in these two cool colors. Time to get started!

Oh My! I'm Black and Blue

That is… black and blue [color scheme] and brown and white too. That was the color scheme I was referring to in my last post that I said I would be talking about next. Oh wait. You were imagining  worried that I might be hurt?  Well… that is a different blog! ;]

I think that nearly every space needs some black, but there’s something about a black and blue color scheme that I find particularly beautiful. First of all… it’s enigmatic. Mysterious. It’s cool and incredibly chic and sophisticated.

Like this Mark Rothko painting.

True story about a black and blue color scheme.

Several years ago a friend very excitedly wanted me to visit a home that he and his team had decorated. It was for his boss— a dude who has written a lot of really well-known tunes. [no names please] None of these people were professional interior designers, however, what they had created was one of the coolest homes I’ve ever seen. The entire place was dark blue, black, brown and white. The kitchen was the only room that was all white with a brown floor. There was a circular space with little white lights in the navy ceiling that looked like stars in the sky. The bedroom, was so incredibly handsome, I would’ve run away with it forever if it had asked me.

So, it is in the spirit of my memory of that gorgeous and unusual home, that I’m going to present ideas for decorating with blue (mostly dark blue and navy), black, and brown and white. Some rooms may not have all four elements. Some rooms might actually be black, but they look navy.

As a designer, I’m totally drawn to these spaces, but don’t know if I have the nerve to do it for myself. Maybe one day.

Blue interior (Look)

The blue color in the interior is beautiful, strict and calm. It relaxes, sets you up for a peaceful rest, relieves stress and fatigue after a hard day. This color is associated with the sea, sky, night, winter season.

The introduction of blue creates a light and airy environment. The interior is cool and clean. Combinations with silver, light gray and white bring a winter touch. No wonder this color is the main one when creating interiors in the Scandinavian style, which was formed in Northern Europe.

However, it should be borne in mind that an excessive amount of blue creates a gloomy atmosphere. Blue must be balanced with warm tones: yellow, peach, brown . In combination with yellow, it looks fresh, with peach it looks luxurious, with dark brown it forms a classic tandem. Designers also decide on the duet red and blue , in which the harmony of ice and flame is born from antagonism.

Combination of blue color in the interior of rooms

In a spacious hallway with plenty of artificial lighting, dark shades of blue look good. It is better to choose dark shades, because light ones are too easily soiled for such a room.

The original solution - ultramarine with sapphire, beige floors and light furniture. Avoid elements black so as not to burden an already limited space.

For the living room, blue should be chosen as the main one, and accents should be emphasized with various shades. If the windows face the sunny side and the furniture is light, then it is recommended to bring a few bright accessories.

The blue kitchen is a great choice for those who follow their figure. Psychologists say that blue reduces appetite. If you are just starting to experiment with this color, try finishing one wall, enter a few large objects - pieces of furniture or built-in appliances.

A classic combination for the kitchen is blue, beige and white . Neutral gamma compensates for the coldness of the main color and balances the space. When decorating a country-style kitchen, try straw yellow and cornflower blue . For a modern style in futuristic motifs, turquoise and azure shades are suitable. In a minimalist kitchen, blue is combined with light gray .

Dreaming of a blue bedroom? The intention is fine, but everything requires a sense of proportion. To prevent the room from getting too cold, enter the color in doses. Bring in individual elements - wallpaper with blue patterns, curtains, blankets, bedspreads, pillows.

In a children's room, the color of the sky will have a beneficial effect. Bright colors scatter attention, and calm blue calms, helps the child to focus. In combination with yellow, orange, light green the color will look cheerful.

Classic solution - blue children's room interior. Blue is too cold, and its blue tint will become the "golden mean".

Standard bathroom solution - blue tiles on a white background. If you want something original, take different shades: blue with sapphire, ultramarine with light sand and gold .

Blue is just perfect for home offices. It sets you up for calm reflections, helps you enter a flowing state when a person is fully concentrated on what he is doing.

When decorating your home office, choose deep, soothing shades: navy blue, gray blue, cobalt . Use beige as a neutralizer . You can dilute the atmosphere by introducing black elements and shades of emerald .

Before we move on to looking at color combinations, let's see what subtleties you need to know and consider when working with blue.

In large rooms, it is recommended to work with soft, blurry, light shades of this color. Please note that blue is a cold color, it “distances” the walls and visually expands the space. With the wrong color selection, a large spacious room will evoke associations with the Snow Queen's castle.

On the contrary, in small and small rooms, blue will play a positive role. Thanks to its properties, it will make the room a little bigger and refresh it. You can paint one wall and hang a mirror on the opposite side, which will visually enlarge the space.

If you still want to decorate a large room in this color, choose shades of blue that are closer to green or red . This technique is used in the design of interiors in the Provence style.

Please note that blue color should not be abused in rooms if the windows face north. In this case, the room will look gloomy, and those in it will feel a lack of warmth. A compromise solution - lilac and lavender shades, aquamarine .

Designers do not recommend making a monochrome blue interior. The smart decision is to go for a neutral color scheme (white, beige, grey) and make combinations with different shades of other colors.

If you want to see the red and blue duo , be careful and ask the designer for advice. You should not take them in the same amount. One should dominate and the other should complement. You determine the soloist depending on whether you want to get a warm room (dominant - red) or cold (dominant - blue).

What colors go with blue

Traditionally blue is paired with white . Blue brings freshness, while white increases space. For walls and ceilings, it is preferable to use a neutralizing color, and blue will be appropriate for furniture and windows. This combination is ideal for small rooms.

A natural combination of blue and wood. Sea, sky, trees, wild flowers - such associations are evoked by the interior, executed in blue-brown tones. For interior design, it is recommended to choose rich shades of wood: teak, chestnut, cherry, dark walnut, mahogany and dark oak .

Duet of blue and green is an original solution that creates depth and harmony. These colors are related, non-contrasting. They were combined by nature itself in the crowns of trees and the blue canvas of the sky.

Red and blue is a difficult solution to implement. According to Feng Shui, red symbolizes the masculine, and blue reflects the feminine. Man and woman, fire and ice - here there is an antagonistic contradiction.

Red excites, calls to action, raises the degree, reduces and suppresses space. On the contrary, blue is associated with calmness, promotes philosophical reflection, lowers the degree, expands the space and pushes the walls away. The question arises, why take these colors as the main ones at all? Maybe choose another compromise solution?

Both colors are primary and have the same multidirectional strength. To combine them correctly, it is necessary to take into account the design subtleties. In some cases, they can be combined neutralizing white .

If you decide on blue-red, think about how to reconcile the eternal opponents, advantageously emphasize the qualities of both, neutralize negative influences. Remember what color costumes the heroes of American comics have. Note that there is more blue. What explains this? The character of the hero combines kindness, calmness, prudence and at the same time courage, courage, readiness for action. Using a similar approach when designing an interior, you can create a living, dynamic, balanced space.

Tandem blue+orange suitable for mini gyms, bathrooms, home cinemas, children's rooms. Blue with orange or yellow is a great pair for Mediterranean, beach or tropical style. Here, the cold blue is offset by warm and natural shades, such as sand.

The combination with pastel colors is a conservative and rational solution. The pastel scale softens the coldness. Any neutral colors are a suitable background for expressive blue.

Blue in combinations with black we see quite rarely. When used ineptly, black enhances the cold color. Such a pair is inappropriate in small rooms, but in a large and spacious room with the participation of a professional designer, you can take a chance.

Blue should be taken as the main one, and black should be introduced in doses to emphasize shapes, outlines, contours. This combination looks elegant and sophisticated if the design solution is implemented correctly.
