Decorative materials for surfaces take an active part in shaping the atmosphere of the interior. Wall decoration with wood panels is steadily gaining popularity. Studying the characteristic properties of the product and installation features will help determine the appropriate design option for the room.
Functions of wood panels
Wood panels are mainly used as interior decoration. Facing is used for an accent wall, partition decoration or an original design design, practical masking of built-in furniture. Lovers of minimalism will love the room, fully finished with wood paneling.
The basis of the material is wood, the amount of which depends on the type of panel. This indicator determines the cost of the product, so natural wood slabs are rated higher than other products. In addition to the direct purpose in the form of wall decoration, wooden panels simultaneously perform other functions:
- zoning space or creating accent areas in the interior;
- improved sound insulation;
- increased thermal insulation;
- successful concealment of wall defects;
- a harmonious combination of space with different styles, which ensures a smooth transition.
The scope of wood panels is quite extensive:
- they will organically fit into the interior of the cottage;
- will decorate the design of a country house;
- will add respectability to the office space;
- will bring the atmosphere of a city apartment closer to natural sources.
This is facilitated by a variety of textures, shapes of panels and their color palette. The gradation of the material from cheap copies to the middle category with the transition to the elite class allows you to choose the most suitable option for wall decoration. The photo gallery will give an idea of the possibilities of interior design with wooden slabs.
Material characteristics
Decorative wood flooring has many positive characteristics:
- Practical. Caring for walls finished with slabs is not complicated by labor-intensive procedures. Periodic wiping with a damp cloth without the use of special detergents will be sufficient. At the same time, the attractive appearance of the panels remains for a long period.
- High soundproofing properties. Wooden slabs contribute to the absorption of excess sounds, the source of which is located in the room itself and outside it. This quality of finishing is especially valuable in noisy city apartments.
- Decorative wooden boards have low thermal conductivity. Full-fledged wall decoration allows you to keep the temperature of the room, preventing rapid cooling in winter and rapid heating in summer.
- Environmental safety. Wood, which is the basis of the material, does not emit toxic substances, provides normal air humidity and maintains a healthy microclimate.
- Aesthetic appeal. The use of wooden panels contributes to the formation of a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.
- Easy installation. Regardless of the chosen method of mounting on the walls, a person who does not have special skills can complete the interior decoration.
- High performance. Wooden panels are resistant to mechanical stress, they are not subject to significant deformation as a result of temperature changes and humidity levels. This ensures that the interior decoration of the walls retains its original appearance and all properties over a long period.
- Before the installation of wooden panels, the preparatory stage for processing the walls is reduced to a minimum set of actions.
- High cost is inherent only in natural wood materials, MDF or chipboard wood panels are in an affordable price category for most consumers.
- The use of different types of wood or surfaces imitating them allows you to choose the appropriate type of finish for the walls.
Among the numerous advantages, several negative points should be noted. The material is subject to the formation of fungus, mold or rotting processes as a result of exposure to moisture. Therefore, wood panels for interior wall decoration should not be installed in places where the humidity level exceeds normal values. Natural wood panels need periodic treatment with protective agents that help maintain their quality characteristics.
Nuances of interior design
A variety of wall finishes allow you to visually change the parameters of the room and create interesting design solutions.
Horizontal fixing of timber panels suitable for rooms with high ceilings. Wide slabs look especially aesthetically pleasing, endowing the interior with elegance and sophistication. Such installation contributes to the visual expansion of the room, filling it with the spirit of freedom and creating space for the flight of creative imagination. Full-scale decoration of the room allows you to pre-fix heat-insulating material on the walls. More often, wooden panels are used in fragments, to accentuate a section of a living room or bedroom, or for the purpose of zoning space.
Vertical wall mount is more often used when decorating office rooms or in the working area of the house. This technique manages to achieve the severity of the interior.
Rectangular wood panels can be combined with square slabs or opt for a diagonal fixing option.
The partial covering of the side surfaces, capturing part of the ceiling, looks interesting. Wall paneling in a wooden house is often full-scale. This achieves harmony between the external and internal design of the room.
Installation of decorative tiles in the bathroom is possible under certain conditions:
- the room has sufficient free space;
- there is high-quality ventilation;
- material is treated with protective impregnations.
Following the recommendations will help to avoid the growth of mold and fungus, otherwise the wooden panels will quickly become unusable.
The classic wall decoration with rectangular pieces competes with the idea of using square pieces. If a gap is provided at the fixing stage, the coating will imitate tiles with a pronounced texture. The effect is enhanced by additional coating with wax or varnish.
Aerobatics in design is marked by multi-level fastening of the material to the walls. This approach ensures the formation of a kind of panel that successfully replaces the picture.
Varieties of finishing material
Individual wall decoration is provided by a variety of existing forms:
- rack-type panels are widely used, the width of which varies within 15-25 cm, the length reaches 3 m;
- Rectangular panels are elegant;
- only win the hearts of consumers square products.
Finishing material in the form of wooden panels has a different structure. These can be:
- Products made from natural wood species. The high cost of finishing is combined with a sophisticated appearance due to a pronounced texture. A long period of operation is ensured by the high mechanical strength of the material for wall decoration.
- Below in the price category are decorative panels made of laminated wood. The performance characteristics of the finish are almost the same as the previous version, with the exception of reduced strength. A noticeable touch - the texture pattern on the walls is less clear.
- MDF wood panels have gained popularity due to their affordable price combined with practicality. Among the advantages of the material, there is a sufficient level of heat and sound insulation, resistance to mechanical stress and temperature extremes. Shades of color correspond to natural breeds of a tree.
- When purchasing cheap chipboard boards, one cannot count on the high practicality of wall covering. The loose structure quickly loses its shape when exposed to moisture. But the appearance of the finish has a decent look and can be used as an intermediate option before installing a more presentable material.
- Cork specimens occupy a separate niche in the assortment of wooden panels. Modern material is characterized by environmental safety and aesthetic appearance. Among the disadvantages are the high probability of mechanical damage in the presence of pets and the ability to quickly absorb all kinds of flavors.
Tip! The last trouble can be avoided if you purchase products treated with protective compounds for wall decoration.
Mounting process
Wood panels can be attached to walls in various ways. It is important to allow the material to rest for several days before starting the interior finishing for acclimatization. Let's take a look at the distinguishing features of each option.
Mounting with adhesive. The application of the method is permissible when attaching the finish to a completely flat wall. The wood panel fixing process includes the following steps:
- Pre-treatment of the wall with a primer solution will help to avoid unnecessary consumption of the adhesive mixture.
- After complete drying of the surface, glue is applied in a thin layer. Actions are performed using a roller.
- The wood panel is installed on the wall according to the selected direction and pressed firmly.
An important aspect of installation is the presence of minimum gaps between the wooden boards. Otherwise, when the humidity level changes, the slightest deformation will lead to a violation of the integrity of the entire wall finish.
For wall cladding with wooden panels, a wooden frame or a metal profile is more often installed. The second option is preferred for the following reasons:
- Metal construction is lighter.
- The material is cheaper than a wooden bar.
- Suitable for mounting in damp rooms.
When choosing a wooden crate for wall decoration, care should be taken to ensure that the material is sufficiently dry. Procedure:
- Markings are made on the wall. The average distance between the rails is 0.6-0.7m. The thickness of the wooden panels directly affects the size of the cells - a dense material does not need frequent lathing.
- Beam strapping is being carried out.
- A thread is pulled between the contours to detect deviations from the vertical or horizontal level.
- After leveling the wall surface, you can proceed to the wood paneling.
Such a frame is called a rigid mount. There is also a soft option, but it is more acceptable for fixing wood panels to the ceiling, and is considered impractical for walls. The algorithm of work on the formation of a metal frame is similar to the process described above.
Direct fastening of wooden panels as wall cladding is as follows:
- Calculate the need for the number of wooden panels. When a fractional number is received, the first and last strip is cut off to make the same width.
- Installation of trim is best to start from the corner. You can also move from door or window openings to the corner of the wall.
- Wooden panels need to be bent slightly to fit into the bottom and top rails.
- Installation of each next element is accompanied by a characteristic click.
- After attaching the wooden panel to the wall, it is imperative to check the vertical level.
- The last copy is better to make a few millimeters smaller to leave a gap in case of expansion due to changing climatic conditions.
Diagonal installation of wood panels is a little more difficult and requires a lot of material.
A wide range of panels allows you to choose wall materials that match the conditions of the room and the ideas of beauty of the owner of the house.
