No, you don't have too many shoes – you just need the right hallway shoe storage to accommodate them, that’s all.

No one wants to trip up on their loved ones’ shoes the moment they walk back in through the door, so incorporating ample storage for your boots and high heels is essential when planning your hallway ideas

'Furniture that allows for hiding clutter is a simple way to keep your hallway free from mess,' says Solenne de la Fouchardiere, Founder at Ochre . 'Figuring out how to hide your shoe collection can make your space feel cleaner and clearer from the second you enter a room.'

Unfortunately, shoes are notoriously awkward objects to store – irregular shapes that you ideally don’t want to stack are always a bit of a nightmare. Luckily, the furniture gods have come up with myriad ways to stash away your sneakers, and keep them organized in the process.

Hallway shoe storage

Great shoe storage ideas are vital, but especially in an entryway or hallway. From boot benches with secret storage to the space-saving tips you need to keep one of the house’s smallest areas tidy, we asked the experts to share their smartest hallway shoe storage solutions to keep you one step ahead.

1. Use the space under the stairs

The best small hallway ideas are all about making the best of the space you have – and that means all of it.

‘A hidden cupboard beneath a staircase in a hallway is a useful space saving idea for those wanting to avoid taking up valuable space with freestanding cabinets and cupboards,’ says interior designer Emma Sims-Hilditch .

While stashing shoes in this cupboard is one way to use this awkward spot, opening up the area can allow for an excellent boot bench location – no need to worry about lack of head height if the purpose of the space is sitting down.

2. Get multifunctional with a storage bench

‘When designing hallway interiors for our clients we often consider how best to maximize the storage space, particular if we are working within a small area,’ says Sims-Hilditch. For hallway storage ideas that work really hard for you, consider a storage bench.

‘Incorporating a hidden space to store shoes, hats and scarfs within bench seating is the perfect way to keep the area uncluttered and tidy, while remaining in keeping with the home’s aesthetic.’

In this entryway nook by designer Ginny Macdonald , a slick, white oak boot bench features handleless deep drawers for easy shoe storage.

3. Maximize utility with built-in units

Wondering how to organize a hallway closet? The best answer is to design it well in the first place. Including bespoke, built-in units in a hallway not only helps make the most of the space, but allows you to tailor it to work for what you need. If you’re the sort of household that wears a lot of boots, ensure you have shelves that are tall enough to accommodate them – for the kids, a greater number of smaller shoe cubbies may be better suited.

4. Upcycle alternative shelving

Not every piece of shoe storage needs to be a dedicated piece of shoe storage – frankly, some neat and tidy shelving will do. This is great news if you’ve found yourself with a much-loved freestanding bookshelf or storage unit that just won’t fit elsewhere in a new home. If it fits, place it in the hallway and either stack up boots straight onto the shelves or use basket inserts that neatly disguise a shoe stash.

5. Make your console table work harder

(Image credit: The Cotswold Company )

A console table already does a lot on a veritable tightrope: it will accommodate your keys, wallet, hallway lighting ideas and family photos, all while staying out of the way as much as possible.

‘We recommend choosing pieces that are versatile and work hard in every space,’ says Paul Deckland, Buying Director at The Cotswold Company . This console table does just that – choose one with a platform on towards the bottom, and it can act either as a shoe rack, or a place to put baskets that are easily filled with shoes.

6. Give each household member their own space

(Image credit: Tiffany Leigh Design/Lauren Miller)

The key to keeping a space tidy is having somewhere to put everything – and if everyone knows exactly where things are meant to go, even better. In this space, designer Tiffany Leigh has made this particularly easy by creating a dedicated locker and shoe drawer for every member of the household. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry also means that not having enough space is not an excuse.

7. Think vertically

Naturally, it’s easiest to assume that shoe storage should go on the floor – but that is simply not the case. In a hallway with minimal floor space, make the most of walls and include shelving that reaches head height and beyond.

‘For a narrow hallway, recessing shelving into a wall is a great way to create extra storage,’ says Sims-Hilditch. If this isn’t possible, make like the designers of this room and create a built-in shelving unit that makes the most of the wall’s width as well as its height.

8. Get quick access with an open bench

(Image credit: Marlaina Teich Designs/Patrick Cline)

While keeping shoes out of sight is the easiest way to make a hallway feel tidy, day-to-day efficiency requires the shoes you need to be immediately accessible when you have to dash out the door. In this space by interior designer Marlaina Teich , a simple storage bench with open space beneath means that shoes used most frequently can be left out, but still tucked away. For the rest, the black woven basket is available to hide them from view.

9. Make it decorative

Don’t just rely on your hallway wallpaper ideas to make a spectacular entrance – do it with your storage furniture too.

‘In this hallway, we commissioned specialist decorators to paint our bespoke-designed American folk art-inspired shoe cupboard – plenty of storage for shoes and a great centerpiece opposite the staircase,’ say Katie Glaister and Henry Miller-Robinson, Co-Founders of K&H Design . ‘The charming Napoleon III pique fleurs complete the look. It’s both practical and beautiful.’

10. Choose a unit that does it all in one

(Image credit: Dan Duchars (Oak Management))

Of course, shoes aren’t the only thing that need to be stored in a hallway – for ease, opt for a unit that will do it all. ‘For busy family homes, a hallway tidy or shoe cupboard is perfect for housing coats, shoes and keys conveniently by the front door,’ says Deckland.

If a whole cupboard is simply too big or imposing, a hallway unit like this one allows for shoe storage inside the ottoman storage bench, while also featuring coat hooks higher up, and even a mirror for a quick check before leaving the house.

11. Keep it minimal

Whether you have a narrow hallway, or are just craving a simple aesthetic, bulky storage isn’t always the answer. For smaller households, often a minimal approach is best with an open shoe rack, cantilevered shelves and a couple of wall hooks for coats. Something that blends effortlessly into your wall scheme, like this unit by String , can work particularly well amid pared-back, modern hallway ideas.

How do you store shoes in a hallway?

There are many ways to keep your shoes tidied away in a hallway – it’s simply a case of working out what is best for you. For larger entrance halls, built-in cupboards with shoe racks or shelves are the best bet, allowing you to store coats, hats, scarves and more, all in one and out of sight.

If you’re planning on creating a seating area for you to put said shoes on, then consider choosing a storage bench which allows for shoes to be stored inside it, accessible either through drawers or via an ottoman-style top. If multifunctional furniture is your thing, consider teaming this with a console table with a built-in shoe rack, for quick access to the shoes you use the most.

What should I keep in a hallway cupboard?

If possible, a hallway cupboard should be kept as a designated place for everything you need when leaving or returning to the house.

Shoes should be a priority, as should coats, scarves, hats, umbrellas and even shopping bags and dog leads. You may also want to use it for select cleaning items like shoe shining kits, but try to stop t from becoming overwhelmed by extra items.

Remember, don’t fill it to the brim – you’ll need space in there to store the shoes and coats of visiting guests too.

Shoe storage in the hallway - ideas and options on how to store shoes in the hallway and where to put dirty ones

At least twice a year, shoes take on a life of their own, blocking the passage and causing you to stumble? We tell you how to store shoes

Editor's note: Several times a month we show the best materials from our archives. This one was published in October 2016, but has not become less relevant since then.

It is possible to get rid of the “curse of a dirty hallway”. But I will not promise that this will happen quickly and without effort on your part. Miracles do not happen - you have to work hard: understand and solve the main problems of storing shoes specifically in your home.

Citizen Design Build Inc.

Inspection and sorting
You will have to start with a “general cleaning” - collect absolutely (!) All shoes in one place and make an audit. At this stage, it is supposed to throw away single shoes / slippers (by the way, their presence in the closets was a surprise for me personally - after all, we regularly checked). Identify those shoes that have become small or uncomfortable, as well as worn, worn, tired.

Tip: It is important to sort the shoes of each family member separately. This will allow not only to get rid of the “unnecessary”, but also to determine whether everything is enough. Otherwise, a few more pairs may appear in the near future, and the question will again arise in front of you: where and how to store shoes if there is not enough space.

It's a pity to throw it away
Unlike the "candidates for the trash can", these shoes are not easy to part with. Solution options: sell through Avito (if we are talking about children's shoes or pairs in perfect condition), give away for free.

Advice: Yes, it will take time to fit the shoes. And right now, sitting among a mountain of shoes of all stripes, you absolutely do not want to do this. Understand, don't judge yourself. Now it’s enough to put unnecessary pairs in a “throw away sorry” bag and put it in a conspicuous place. Solve this problem tomorrow.

The Dirty Shoes Problem
The crowd of shoes at the front door - alas - is completely unrelated to the number of boxes that you have planned in the dressing room for seasonal storage of shoes. At that moment, when dad, mom, two children and grandmother took out their “two pairs”, soaked one shoes in the morning and managed to go to the store (to a dance lesson, walk the dog ...) in other shoes - a natural disaster occurs in the hallway in the form of a mountain dirty shoes.

Advice: There is not always time and desire to immediately clean the shoes and put them on the shelf when washed. Moreover, of those seasonal pairs that clutter up our hallway, some are actively used, others only in case of bad weather. But there is no way to hide them far in the pantry. For such galoshes, rubber boots and other “rainy” pairs, a retractable shelf-tray in a shoe rack will be an excellent option - both “at hand” and do not interfere with the passage.

Multiply by two
It is clear that we do not wear all pairs at the same time - seasonality is very pronounced in our climate. But it is not at all excluded that rubber boots, autumn boots, warm boots, and a pair of sneakers will be in the hallway at the same time.

Tip: Plan your hallway shoe space with two adjacent seasons in mind. That is, if during your revision you have 10 pairs “for autumn” and 10 more “for winter”, then in your hallway there should be enough space for at least 15 pairs. And if guests regularly come to you or the children have a nanny, take these shoes into account when calculating.

Shoe rack

Clean and dirty storage are equally important
The open shoe racks by the door in my family are used only for everyday shoes: there can be one, maximum two pairs of shoes for each family member. In front of the door we have an easy-to-clean rug, which we step on as soon as we enter from the street, take off our shoes on it. However, we put only clean shoes on the shelf. The question is quite simple: what to do with still dirty shoes that you do not rush to wash as soon as you cross the threshold of the house?

NF interiors

“Transit point” for a dirty pair of shoes
Let's imagine a situation: not everyone has returned home from work / school, but there are already quite a lot of dirty shoes at the front door. Washing it in batches to put it on the shelf is strange, but the “pandemonium of shoes” at the front door is annoying.

Perhaps all you need is to rearrange the existing furniture in the hallway. The goal is to organize an “island of dirty shoes” directly at the entrance: boots and shoes will not stand in the aisle and create a “crowding effect”.

Whitney Lyons

Tip: A pallet or special rug with bumpers (like a car) filled with pebbles is not as ideal as it might seem. Yes, he solves his problem and helps to localize the dirt, but you have to spend time and regularly wash the pebbles. Our advice is to use an empty pallet.

J.A.S. Design-Build

So, your habits will not change - come in, wipe your feet on the rug, put dirty shoes on a specially designated tray (even a voluminous kitchen pan with sides, as in the photo, can act as its role).
When the time came, they washed and put all the pairs in a shoe rack with open shelves; perhaps tomorrow the weather will be different and you will put on another pair - in the evening a pallet will be waiting for her on the “island of dirty shoes”.

Don't forget to keep them by the front door as well. There are a lot of solutions - from a special section in the closet and shoe holders to hanging wardrobe trunks made of fabric, which are hidden in a wardrobe.

Other shoes "to keep at the door"
So, you already understood: in the hallway there should be enough space for everything that we leave or come back with. And for this, you will have to think about the habits of your family specifically - find a place where it is convenient to put removable shoes (sports, school, etc.) and allocate a special place for roller skates and skates, where we also remove protective accessories during the season.

Advice: If possible, organize storage according to the principle of a “personal locker” - divide shoe rack areas between family members. It really helps keep things tidy and eliminates “where are my sneakers” questions.

CIRCLE Design Studio

Lots of shoes in rotation, little space
Skip standard open shelves and banquettes (for 8-12 pairs) in favor of non-standard designs.

Consider the number and appearance of shoes. For example, a rack with open round sections with a photo “works” perfectly if your main wardrobe is low boots and shoes: there is simply no place for boots with high tops. Considering that there is no place for them at the front door, “pandemonium” is inevitable. Under boots, such a rack would be worth planning differently, for example, lifting it above the floor for the sake of an “island of dirty shoes” and a pair of high sections.

Labra Design Build

Drawer is more convenient than shelves
If you are limited in meters, don't use shelves! The storage method in the drawer allows you to fit more pairs per unit area.

Organized Interiors

Pull-out shelf - an alternative to a drawer
Replace the interior of a standard hallway cabinet - instead of regular shelves, install pull-out shelves at the interval you need. You will get the opportunity to neatly store shoes and boots, and the closed facade will solve the problem of settling dust.

Putting shoes away for storage
When everyday shoes find their place, it turns out that there are not so many seasonal / formal / special shoes that go into long-term storage. Ideally, if everyone took it to their personal closet. It is important to clean shoes so that they are easy to get and recognize. The general approach is as follows: dress shoes lie under suitable outfits, seasonal shoes either on the bottom shelf of the closet or on the top. In my family, all shoes are stored in proportional boxes with transparent walls and special labels on which a pair is indicated.

Walk-in closet shoe rack

Tip: Plan for dual-use boxes when revising shoes. If you store shoes in opaque boxes, take care of the “navigation”: put stickers on them with the following content: “summer - brown shoes, winter - white ballet flats, blue moccasins”. As a result, the same shoe box will work all year round, and you will not have to remember where and what is stored.

When your shoes are at an angle, you can see them clearly. Storing shoes vertically makes choosing easier, but it will require more careful shoe care. Especially if we are talking about an open section in the dressing room - dust will settle on the shoes.

Shoe storage: ideas and life hacks

“Don't throw your shoes in a big family!” Otherwise, there will be nowhere to go. But even for those who live alone, shoes often clutter up the hallway. Let's figure out with an expert how to avoid it

How to prepare shoes for storage

By following the basic storage rules, you will not only extend the life of your shoe collection, but also quickly find the right pair before leaving the house (Photo: Loc Dang/Pexels)

No matter how many pairs of shoes an owner has, they need to be sorted out periodically. By following the basic storage rules, you can not only extend the life of shoes, but also simplify the choice of the right pair before leaving the house.

Dismantling

Try to get in the habit of sorting your shoes regardless of the season (Photo: Shutterstock)

It makes sense to get into the habit of sorting your shoes, no matter the season. For three summer months, shoes and sneakers that are no longer worn often accumulate in the hallway. Some were worn or tired, others, especially for children, became small, others did not live up to expectations in the sock, so they lie idle. It is important to sort the shoes of each family member separately. So it is most obvious what has become superfluous, and what is missing. Then you can already plan what to buy next time you go to the store. Shoes that are not worn can be tidied up, sold or given away.

What to do with accumulated unwanted shoes

Sorting

Winter boots are obviously not needed on the rug by the door in the hot season, and sandals in the snow. With the change of season, it makes sense, without delay, to wash and remove excess vapors. In order not to litter the shoe rack and closet in a small hallway, seasonal shoes are put away in the dressing room or on the mezzanine. You can also store it in a garage or warehouse.

Maintenance

New couples should be protected before going out and groomed regularly (Photo: Shutterstock)

In order for shoes to last longer, seasonal wear must be taken into account. New couples should be protected before going out and groomed regularly. It is worth choosing the appropriate materials and conditions for the means: sponges, creams and protective sprays. It is recommended to dry shoes not on a battery, but at room temperature and with the help of special devices. It is important to regularly wipe the surface with a sponge or damp cloth; some types of shoes, such as sneakers, can be washed in the machine on the appropriate cycle.

How to care for shoes: the most important thing

How to choose a place to store shoes

Shoe closet (Photo: pinterest.com)

Most of the shoes are stored in the corridor, unclaimed seasonal shoes are in the closets of other rooms. Here are the working options:

In the dressing room

When creating a closet, you need to take into account the filling: shelves and baskets for shoes can be placed in the main compartments or allocate space for them in the upper tier.

  1. Drawers. Narrow shoe compartments with a low height allow you to store a large number of shoes in several rows on top of each other. You can choose drawers with a transparent front insert; so you can see what's inside. A great idea for dry summer shoes that are changed several times a day is to put them in baskets not in pairs, but all together. This option is suitable for a large number of children's shoes, a variety of sandals and sneakers, which are often found in the hallway. Each box or basket can be signed with the name of the owner, and then put away under the bench and taken out as needed. This will save a lot of space in the corridor, while all the necessary shoes will be at hand.
  2. Shelves. Some shelves fold like an accordion to accommodate the maximum number of pairs of shoes. It can also be stored on open shelves, but then frequent maintenance will be required due to the constant accumulation of dust.
  3. Module. Inserts allow you to pair boots and shoes so you can quickly find the right ones. Manufacturers also offer hanging modules with storage pockets. They can be hung on the door or the inner back wall of the cabinet. Competently organize the space will help attention to the habits of residents. Storage rules are very individual: some people need only shoes to go to work, others need sneakers for morning runs, several pairs of shoes for going out and boots for walking the dog. It is necessary to provide places for storing spare shoes or roller skates with protective accessories. The ideal solution would be to distribute sections in the closet and shoe rack for each family member so that couples do not get lost, or, for example, hide shelves under a banquette if one of the residents prefers to change shoes while sitting.

Where to store clothes, shoes and a bicycle: 7 unusual ways

In the corridor

Storing shoes in baskets (Photo: pinterest. com)

A place to store shoes should be considered even when repairing and creating a design project. In addition to family members, count on possible guests so that everyone who comes does not have to jump over shoe barricades. Take a look at the following options:

  1. Shoe rack. This furniture comes in different sizes: from very miniature for four or six pairs to entire compartments or one large cabinet for several dozen. Its convenience lies in the ability to hide shoes from view behind doors or flaps with a guide mechanism. If you can’t pick up cabinets from those offered in stores, and it’s expensive to make them to order, you can make a rack with your own hands. This will require a minimum of tools and materials. The easiest option is furniture made from pallets, which will perfectly fit into a modern interior. The shoe rack can be painted any color or left unfinished. In addition to design, you can vary the number of shelves - from two or three to the ceiling itself.
  2. Storage systems. It is not necessary to clutter up the space with closed cabinets, sometimes it is better to choose a rack. On open shelves it is convenient to store home and casual shoes. It is better to put guest slippers in a separate section of the closet or hanging trunk - they are not needed so often. Much depends on the number of people living in the apartment. Standard racks and shoe racks for 8-12 pairs are rarely suitable for large families, so you should take a closer look at the original options. For example, modern furniture manufacturers offer open shoe cabinets with sections up to the ceiling. Both children's and adult shoes will fit in the depth of each cell. But at the same time, high over the knee boots will have to be folded, so decide in advance how you will store such shoes. Shoes, sneakers and sandals can be hung directly on the wall if you pick up the original hooks. But these pairs must be clean.
  3. Accessories. Rubber door mat (available with rims) suitable for outdoor shoes, especially on rainy days. It would not be superfluous to provide a box for shoe care products: brushes, sponges, fabrics, sprays and creams. In most cases, it is customary to remove clean pairs, leaving the ones you walk in on the rug by the front door. But with a large number of people in the apartment, a mess forms in the hallway, especially during the demi-season periods, when rubber boots are needed in the morning, sneakers in the afternoon, and ankle boots in the evening. A good option is a pull-out shelf with a pallet. The bottom can be lined with a soft cloth that absorbs moisture. It is important not to forget to dry your shoes and wipe the shelf every few days.

What to store shoes in

Drawer for shoes (Photo: pinterest.com)

In order not to clutter up the space with the same type of boxes and bags that are difficult to navigate, you can purchase several storage accessories:

  1. Cases and eco-bags. Fabric accessories allow you to neatly store the right pair of shoes. You can classify them by colors for different family members or by seasonal criteria.
  2. Containers. Transparent boxes are especially popular. They protect shoes, help you stack pairs compactly on top of each other and at the same time easily find the right boots.
  3. Organizers. Available as multi-compartment boxes or tote boxes. It is important not only to carefully remove shoes that are out of season, but also to navigate among the boxes. Alternatively, you can buy completely transparent trunks or boxes with windows in which you can see the contents. If the replacement of boxes is not included in the plans, stickers with a description will help (for example, “autumn, black low shoes, N”). So the owners do not have to remember what is stored where, after six months. Boots need special holders; leather shoes are best cleaned with pads or stuffed with paper. Shoes made of any material must be ventilated and protected from moisture.

- In terms of functionality, shoes can be divided into several types:

Pallet shoe rack (Photo: pinterest. com)

Everything is simple with beautiful shoes: a narrow and tall cabinet with a glass door is suitable for storage. It's good when beautiful shoes are hidden from dust and do not interfere with getting something else.

For everyday shoes, it's good to have a small bench with a shelf or a shoe rack - it's a simple and beautiful solution. I do not recommend furniture with metal bars, heels and laces get stuck in them all the time. Chipboard shelves look aesthetically pleasing, but many are afraid to put something on them because of dirt and moisture. In this case, I suggest using special rubber trays and mats. Sockets can be provided near or inside the shelf for connecting a shoe dryer.

Shoe cabinets are shallow, but high and, for example, with mirrors. The internal system can be uncomfortable, it does not always fit men's shoes in large sizes. If you make dressers to order, instead of boxes it is better to use metal baskets. Life hack: these dressers can be ordered from companies that produce kitchens.

For seasonal shoes, use plastic baskets with lids of the same size and color that can be signed (Photo: Pixabay)

For seasonal shoes, use plastic baskets with lids of the same size and color that can be signed. If the wardrobe system is open, they will fit nicely into it. The main thing is to provide shelves.

Sports and hobby shoes are best stored in the same place as all other equipment. This will help not to lose or spoil it if stored improperly. So, pointe shoes should not be stored together with dirty children's rubber boots. It is better to put shoes for hobbies in cases, so it will be more convenient to take them out and immediately take them with you. It is advisable not to store the shoes of all family members in one place. Let everyone have their own shelf or part of a shelf and a rubber mat. It looks aesthetically pleasing and is also very comfortable - the shoes are immediately distributed by size.
