With the changing seasons and low light situation, a kitchen with the wrong aspect can start to feel like a dark, dreary space. While in summer, kitchens might feel light and joyful, they can turn dark and moody in the winter, leaving the space feeling cold and unwelcoming. But fear not, there are "clever" design tricks at hand that you can work with to brighten the space and embrace natural light.
Eugene Colberg, principal at Colberg Architecture said: "Clever lighting is one clear way to help brighten the space, but everything influences how bright the space is, from the furniture to the colour scheme.
"When it comes to creating a brighter space, there are two light types to pay attention to make it feel brighter: one is adding more ceiling lights, and the other is via under-cabinet lighting.
"Recessed and track lighting in the ceiling can make the room brighter overall, however, when one uses these in the modern kitchen, you’re typically facing the countertop, prepping, and cooking.
"When the light is behind you, what you have in front of you is a shadow." This means, even if your lights are perfect, we have to consider other ways to keep our kitchens bright.
1. Encourage natural light with frameless windows
As kitchens typically face the rear of the house and onto a garden, there is ample potential to maximise natural light and allow it to flood a dark kitchen. Lior Brosh of Brosh Architects, said: "Think about creating a large opening to the rear or using cleverly designed skylights to manipulate the natural light flow into darker spaces.”

Let the light shine in through a larger floor-to-ceiling window and create a reading nook or window seat to encourage you to stop, take a moment, and look outside.
2. Don’t just rely on white
While the temptation may be to paint a dark room bright white to try make the most of the light it does get, this can sometimes just leave your space looking grey and washed out - after all, white won't look the same as it does in a south-facing room, and you might find its a colour to avoid in a north-facing one.
According to Lior, you can have a bright kitchen regardless of the colour. He pointed out: "Even black, dark kitchens can be bright – you just need to work with the natural lighting at hand.”
3. Mix and match light sources
Kitchens can be bright and beautiful with an array of lighting sources. Eugene said: "The next best thing is to increase brightness in the kitchen using lighting."
Charlie Bowles, director of Original BTC, shared that, if possible, consider the lighting scheme at the planning stage to maximise opportunities. He noted: "You need two types of illumination. Shadow-free task lighting for cooking and prep, and ambient lighting for when you simply want to unwind or entertain.

Your lighting will come together if you can control your lights fully and create different moods at the flick of a switch. Asking your electrician to install several circuits means you’ll be able to introduce texture and depth.
4. Use mirrors in a clever way
Homeowners can also easily create a bright and light kitchen by using the latest mirror trends to their advantage, such as using mirrored glass as splashbacks.
Jane Powell of Roundhouse explained: "Mirrored glass used as a splashback most definitely creates a feeling of space and light in any kitchen.

"Silver mirror adds brightness, whereas bronze or copper will add warmth and a more luxurious feel. It’s also easy to pair with any number of other finishes and colours within the kitchen space."
For those going for a simple wall mirror, they might want to think about a convex-style mirror which tricks the eye even more to really stretch the space.
Natasha Reid of Reid and Wright London said: "A well-placed mirror is particularly useful for illuminating dark corners. Hand slumped convex glass mirrors have a divergent reflection, which amplifies the light, creating the illusion of space and adding drama to darker rooms. "
5. Be careful with cabinetry
For those who have a small kitchen, the space is prone to feeling cramped and therefore dark, so it's about how you make the space feel bigger that will go far to brighten the room.
The best way to add light to a small kitchen is by not filling the room full of cupboards (Image: GETTY)
Helen Parker of deVOL said: "If your aim is to make your kitchen look bigger, then the best way to achieve this is by not filling the room full of cupboards and leaving plenty of light and space around windows, so avoid wall cupboards."
Instead, opt for shelves that will avoid this tunnelling, cramped look taken over by imposing cabinets. Alternatively, Irene Gunter, founder of Gunter & Co also suggests removing cupboard doors.
She said: "When all the cupboards in a kitchen have solid fronts, it can sometimes feel a little imposing. To break up the monotony – as well as lighten the overall look of the kitchen – we design wall cupboards with a variety of glass fronts.
"To maximise the flow of natural light, I suggest keeping it simple with transparent glass. If clients prefer not to have the contents of their cupboards on display, I recommend smoked glass."

3-click lighting selection
A pendant lamp is a good choice for a kitchen environment. In an apartment with a small kitchen, such a lighting item suspended from the ceiling visually enlarges the space. In a large room, you can hang the device on a long suspension above the dining table. For additional illumination of the working area, use point light sources.
Lighting technology can be adjusted in height. There are three options:
- Hanger with the possibility of changing the length (the process takes some time).
- Pendant chandelier with a counterweight that quickly adjusts the position of the shade.
- Compact luminaires for the kitchen with a retractable mechanism in the form of an accordion. As with the previous version, the height of the ceiling can be changed easily.
Styles and materials
- Classic - natural materials and unobtrusive decor.
- Loft - rough forms, an abundance of dark metal and glass.
- Art Nouveau - wood and metal, glass and plastic, acrylic and unusual shapes.
- Art Deco is a flashy, kitsch item.
- Tiffany-style 'mosaic' pendant lights have been on trend for more than a generation. Manufacturers produce chandeliers with "kitchen" patterns.

40 photos of kitchen lighting ideas, chandeliers and fixtures
The principle of a modern lighting system is multi-level. Any combination of ceiling lights, if it provides sufficient lighting and zoning, is recognized as successful. Moreover, the style of the room does not really matter: the choice of lighting fixtures is endless.
Initial selection principles
Kitchen lighting depends not so much on the area of the room, ceiling height and operating conditions, but on the type of ceiling.
- A painted or whitewashed ceiling, alas, reduces the choice to a minimum: here you can install only traditional pendant chandeliers, lighting panels and side lights. This option simply does not have the technological space to use more modern models.
- Plasterboard ceiling is fixed at a certain, albeit minimal distance from the base ceiling. Accordingly, it becomes possible to mount overhead or mortise LED lamps.
- The stretch fabric perfectly tolerates the neighborhood with any LED devices. But incandescent or fluorescent lamps "tolerate" only if the latter are placed on hanging chandeliers.
- Slatted ceiling allows you to use absolutely any lighting options and with the help of any devices.
Both the style of the room and the material of the ceiling finish must be taken into account. A plasterboard ceiling, for example, can be decorated with LED strips, a number of spotlights, and a lighting panel. But kitchens with a wooden ceiling are much more demanding: wrought iron pendant chandeliers or “hidden lighting” with recessed spotlights are most suitable.
Types of lighting fixtures used
There are many types of lighting systems, and any option can be used for home and kitchen. The main considerations are functionality and relevance to tasks.
- The chandelier is a classic model with several light bulbs working together to create sufficient light. Chandeliers can be of various shapes and types: flat ceiling, for a kitchen with a low ceiling, voluminous, descending almost to the table, with different directions of light flux - to the sides, up to the ceiling, down to the table, and so on.
As a rule, the chandelier is installed alone, but can be supplemented with spotlights or lighting.
- Ceiling rail luminaires are small lighting fixtures, usually simulating the body of a lantern or spotlight, mounted on a rail built into the ceiling. In some cases, they can move along the bus, which allows you to place lamps and adjust lighting as needed.
- Railing luminaires - small lighting fixtures mounted on a light decorative frame. The option is similar to models with a ceiling rail, but more original and allows you to effectively decorate the kitchen. Do-it-yourself installation is extremely simple.
- Spotlights - this is the name of lighting fixtures of different sizes and power that provide local lighting. The combination of several allows you to illuminate the entire kitchen. The layout of point devices is selected based on the configuration of the room.
To illuminate the ceiling in the kitchen, several options are used:
- recessed - the luminaire is recessed into the ceiling surface, its body is hidden, and only the lighting panel remains visible. The decorativeness of the model is minimal, but such hidden lighting looks very modern;
- overlays - the case remains visible, so attention is paid to its design. Overheads are easier to install, they can be mounted with your own hands and on a regular ceiling, unlike mortise ones, which need a technological niche;
- hanging - rare. The luminaires are fixed on a rail and hang down on a common suspension. Such models are popular in loft, techno, fusion style kitchens.
- Spot is a cross between a spotlight and a panel. The device has a small size, as a rule, a round shape, and most importantly, a movable base. A very convenient option for lighting the work area, as it allows you to arbitrarily direct the light flux. The kitchen decorated in this way looks very modern.
Spots can be embedded or overhead. Both incandescent, fluorescent and diode lamps are used as a light source. You can install spots directly on the ceiling with your own hands.
- Lighting panels - product dimensions vary quite widely. Several small lamps are fixed in a certain pattern in order to provide good lighting. A large panel - 60x60, perfectly replaces the central lighting fixture, but does not take up space.
- Ceiling light - lamps are located on the base surface. Below them, a translucent stretch fabric is fixed. Thus, the entire ceiling performs the role of a lighting device.
- Illumination - not suitable as the main lighting, as it is of low power. But LED strips allow you to shade the figures of the second and third levels on a multi-level ceiling, highlight the image, create additional lighting or color. The decorating effect in the latter case is especially interesting.
Room zoning: dining room
It is believed that for a small kitchen you can choose a central lighting fixture, install it yourself and thus solve the lighting problem. In fact, this is not enough even for the smallest room.
In the interior of the kitchen there are always 2 zones: working and dining. One single lamp is not enough to illuminate the dining table and all the work tables of the kitchen set, especially the corner one. So even the smallest kitchen needs combined lighting.
Dining area - here the light is not only functional, but also a decorative detail. Here it is very important to choose the design of the lamp so that it matches the home interior.
- Placed directly above the table, the chandelier immediately transforms the dining area into a centerpiece. However, this technique is only suitable for a large kitchen, where it is possible to install other lighting options on the ceiling. In a small room, a hanging chandelier will have to be placed in the center of the room, and the work area will be supplemented with a variety of LED lighting.
- Several lamps on long pendants are placed exactly above the table, regardless of the location of the dining area and its configuration. Ceiling lamps are selected in medium sizes: the more there are, the smaller their size. You can install 1 lighting panel that repeats the shape of the table. Thus, the zone is rigidly allocated.
- A row of spotlights on the ceiling also allows you to literally separate the dining area from the working area. The order in which fixtures are placed should be chosen according to style. The number of lamps should be such as to provide good lighting. Kitchens, photos of which you can see at the end of the article, are distinguished by a good lighting option.
Zoning the room: work area
The zone needs not only good lighting, but also the ability to adjust the direction of the light and localize it. Work area lighting is always a combination of small lighting fixtures, one central chandelier is useless in this case. However, for the correct location of spotlights and backlighting, you need to find out exactly where the lighting is most needed.
- The first level is the area directly above the desk and washbasin. Lamps, usually spotlights or spotlights, are placed either on the wall or on furniture. The last option is more convenient.
- The second level is the illumination of the contents of wall cabinets. To do this, you can place the lamps on the cornice of the kitchen set, use LED lighting, installing directly on the furniture, or take advantage of the railing system.
The latter can be used to illuminate the entire kitchen, just like rail lights. Fixtures can be rotated to change the direction of the light and illuminate the desired area.
- The third level is decorative. The selected lighting is placed, for example, at the very bottom of the base cabinets, which gives the kitchen set an unusual lightness. Glazed compartments of floor and wall cabinets illuminated from the inside look very nice. Sometimes LED lighting complements kitchen fittings.
Lighting combination
Modern interior solutions allow you to easily combine different lighting fixtures, meeting lighting requirements and maintaining the style of the room. At the same time, one should not forget that light is a powerful design tool that can both decorate a kitchen and visually change proportions.
- With low ceilings , you should opt for flat-shaped lamps: ceiling chandeliers, lighting panels, spotlights, spotlights.
- With high ceilings , volumetric chandeliers, pendant lamps, and railing systems of any complexity are used.
The different shape and type of the lamp allows you to structure the space no worse than the color or texture of the finish. So the best option for both large and small rooms is a combination of lighting fixtures of different sizes. The large kitchen combines flat and pendant lights.
- Multilevel ceiling , on the one hand, allows the use of any type of luminaires, on the other hand, it puts forward more stringent requirements for the choice. The general design principles are as follows:
- illumination is placed on the side surfaces of figures of the second or third level. It does not so much illuminate as it highlights an interesting solution;
- spotlights are placed along the perimeter, on the flat surface of the figure of the second level, in ceiling niches;
- pendant lamps are best placed above the dining area. They are mounted only on the first level of a multi-level ceiling;
- lighting panels are installed flush with the main ceiling or on the base surface.
Kitchen ceiling lights always offer the right solution for every kitchen size and configuration.
