“The main benefits of a single-serve coffee maker are its speed and ease of use compared to brewing a whole pot,” says Maryna Gray, director of coffee at Bean Box. “With single-serve, you'll always have a fresh, hot cup of coffee without having to reheat or drink coffee that's been sitting on a warmer for hours. Plus, it's a waste of coffee beans to make an entire pot of coffee if you're the only one drinking it.”

When it comes to choosing a single-serve coffee makers, there are a few different styles available these days. Most people are familiar with Keurig or pod coffee makers, which use pre-packaged pods to brew single cups of coffee. However, you can also find drip-style coffee makers that can brew one cup at a time, as well as pour-over coffee makers that work without electricity. There’s also been a rise in high-tech “super espresso” machines that can brew single servings of coffee, espresso and even make milk-based drinks. Whether you want to keep it basic and budget-friendly or go all-out on your new coffee machine, these are the best single-serve coffee makers worth considering in 2023.

What To Look For In A Single-Serve Coffee Maker

Considering adding a single-serve coffee maker to your home kitchen? While considering the various models out there, keep these factors in mind to ensure you pick the right one for your household.

Style

There are several types of single-serve coffee makers available today, all of which have their own benefits. If you want an electric model, there are traditional drip models, as well as units that use coffee pods. Drip models allow you to use your own coffee grounds, while pods are quick and convenient to use, as there’s no measuring or filters needed. For those who like espresso-based drinks, there are also high-end machines that can make single servings of coffee, lattes and more.

However, there are also a few styles of manual single-serve coffee makers. Pour-overs are a popular option for making just one cup of coffee, as they’re simple to use and often give you the ability to adjust brew strength and steep time to meet your tastes. Coffee presses are another option that allow you to make one cup at a time, and they’re usually small, lightweight and portable.

Coffee Options

The quality of your coffee beans or grounds has a direct impact on the quality of your brew, so you’ll want to consider what type of coffee you can use with your new machine. Some high-end machines have built-in grinders, allowing you to use whole beans, while others use filters and ground coffee or pre-packaged coffee pods.

In particular, coffee pods are the most limiting option—even though they’re convenient. “If you want a pod machine, look for one that can work with reusable pod cups, so you can brew your own specialty beans,” recommends Gray. “It is hard to find good quality coffee in pod format, and these tend to be more expensive, too.”

Features

Manual coffee makers generally have a very basic design with little to no extra features, but if you splurge on a high-end electric model, it may come with the ability to customize your brew. Some single-serve coffee makers allow you to adjust the brew strength and water temperature, and certain machines even have an option to brew iced coffee.

If you’re looking at extremely high-end models, you’ll find that some single-serve coffee makers have the ability to make espresso and other drinks: “A push-button espresso machine for the home isn't cheap, but that coffee will taste better than most single-serve drip brews,” says Gray. Some espresso machines even have built-in milk frothers for beverages like lattes and cappuccinos.

Is It Worth Buying A Coffee Pod Machine?

Coffee pod machines can be quite polarizing—some people love them while others don’t like them at all. The main benefits of coffee pods is that they’re quick and easy to use. You simply select the pod you want, pop it into the machine and start brewing. Just like that, you’ll have a fresh cup of coffee in a matter of minutes. Plus, there are a wide range of coffee pods available today, including options from many of the top coffee brands, like Starbucks and Dunkin.

However, if you’re discerning about your coffee, a pod machine may not live up to your expectations. Because they brew so quickly, coffee pods typically result in a less flavorful drink.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Single-Serving Coffee Pods?

One of the main criticisms of single-serve coffee pods is the waste created. The plastic pods are designed to be thrown away after a single use, which results in a lot of non-recyclable trash if you’re drinking one or more cups a day. “Pod-based coffee has its own waste built-in, but there are reusable pod baskets available on market,” explains Gray.

Further, coffee pods simply don’t deliver the same flavor that drip coffee machines do. “The main downside to single-serve is that the taste and quality of the coffee is generally lower,” says Gray. “Many pod and single-serve brewers brew at a lower temp so the end cup is at a safer temperature, which can mean the coffee is going to be a little under-extracted.”

A big pot of freshly-made drip coffee is a morning staple for families, workplaces, and roommates, but there are plenty of times when a one-and-done brew is more practical and efficient. Single-serve coffeemakers are popular in large part due to how easy it is to operate them.

"Getting the coffee you enjoy, exactly right, every single time is a huge plus for most casual coffee drinkers," said Matt and Katie Woodburn-Simmons, veteran baristas and current owners/operators of Home Coffee Expert. Founder of Invita Cafe in California, Sara De Luca, also attests to the time-saving powers of the single-serve machine: "Not everyone has the time to calibrate and measure out their freshly ground [coffee and] espresso shots every morning."

This convenience means that there's a wide range of models on the market. However, if you're like me and refuse to compromise on flavor, body, and overall quality, then it's worth being particular before committing to a purchase. After testing nine different single-serve coffeemakers to evaluate their ease of use, the brew speed, and the taste of the finished product, I found the best single-serve coffee makers out there. Once you pick one, consider adding to your set-up with one of the best coffee mugs or milk frothers.

The best single-serve coffee makers

Best single-serve coffee maker overall: AeroPress Original Coffee & Espresso Maker
The AeroPress delivers on just about every possible coffeemaking front: it's fast, easy to use, inexpensive, travel-friendly, and makes flavorful coffee.

Best single-serve pod coffee maker: Keurig K-Supreme Smart Single Serve Coffee Maker
The K-Supreme Smart Single Serve Coffee Maker uses Bluetooth technology and a user-friendly app to customize your potent and fast-brewing morning cup.

Best single-serve espresso maker: Nespresso VertuoPlus
The ultimate machine for quality espresso at lightning speed, the Nespresso VertuoPlus simplifies the espresso-brewing process without compromising on flavor.

Best budget single-serve coffee maker: Black and Decker Single Serve Coffee Machine
Straightforward and satisfying, the Black and Decker Single Serve Coffee Machine is a great no-frills coffeemaker at a budget-friendly price point.

Best portable/travel single-serve coffee maker: Nguyen Coffee Supply Phin Filter
The Nguyen Coffee Supply Phin Filter is an exquisitely-designed pour-over coffee maker that's easy to use, easy to clean, and ideally packaged for travel.

What else we tested

More single-serve coffee makers we recommend:

Nespresso Essenza Mini: Attention, small-apartment dwellers: this is the Nespresso machine for you. The Essenza Mini brews espresso with the same ease as the VertuoPlus (although it uses Nespresso Original pods rather than Vertuo pods), but it takes up a fraction of the space. The VertuoPlus may become my "special occasion" Nespresso machine, but the Essenza Mini is my workhorse model for daily use and has a permanent place in my kitchen.

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Single-Serve Plus Coffee Maker: This machine is compatible with both ground coffee and with K-Cups, gives you multiple size options for your brew, and allows you to choose between "Regular" brew strength (which has a medium body) and "Bold" (which is more intense). It's easy to set up and to clean (the reusable filter for ground coffee and the K-Cup holder are both dishwasher-safe) and sells for under $80.

Cuisinart Single-Serve 40-Ounce Coffeemaker: Sleek and simple, the Cuisinart Single-Serve bears many similarities to a classic Keurig. It's compatible with K-Cups (you can also purchase a separate refillable Cuisinart K-Cup) and it makes serviceable pod coffee. The finished brew won't rock your world, but the machine will save you time and look very pretty on your countertop.

Kalita Wave Dripper 185: The Kalita Wave is about as straightforward as a pour-over gets: you insert a filter (you need to purchase specialty ones for the Kalita), add ground coffee, and pour hot water over the grounds in a circular pattern until enough coffee drips through the bottom to fill a cup. That said, the simplicity of the method means that there's a lot of room for variation and a lot of room for error. It takes time and effort to figure out the formula, so it's best for people with pour-over experience.

Which coffee machine to choose in 2023 - an overview of the most popular models

Contents

  1. Choosing an automatic coffee machine in 2023
  2. Choosing a bean coffee machine for your home in 2023

Which coffee machine to choose in 2023 for home or coffee shop? Now there are a large number of offers on the market, so it’s not at all easy to navigate. Among the manufacturers there are both specialized companies and well-known brands of household appliances. The range ranges from simple compact models to multifunctional equipment with a whole range of customizable options. This allows you to find an option that suits you in terms of cost and meets all requests.

The most important characteristics of any coffee machine are:

  1. Appliance type: automatic, capsule, carob, etc.
  2. Control method: rotary controls, buttons, touch screen.
  3. Power.
  4. Water tank and bean container capacity.
  5. Built-in coffee grinder and cappuccinatore.
  6. Available settings.

Many modern models have a number of additional functions that are also worth paying attention to: a timer, a stand for warming cups, a mode for simultaneously preparing two portions. These options are not particularly necessary, but they can make the use of technology easier and more comfortable.

Choosing an automatic coffee machine in 2023

The main task for all coffee machines is the same: to brew a rich aromatic drink. However, for different devices, the degree of user involvement in this process may be different. The most advantageous in terms of saving time and effort are automatic models. It is enough to fill in the grains, pour water and press the start button - the equipment will do the rest on its own. The whole procedure takes less than a minute. Thoughtful design and a variety of technologies provide optimal parameters for creating the perfect coffee. In addition, usually such units have built-in maintenance programs that greatly facilitate the maintenance of the device.

Choice of grain coffee machine for home in 2023

A grain coffee machine is a useful and convenient device that can prepare the same delicious and rich drink at home as a barista in a coffee shop. The built-in coffee grinder strictly measures the amount of beans required for a given number of servings each time, so only freshly ground coffee is always used. The fineness of grinding is usually adjustable, which allows you to choose the best option for your taste. You can use beans of any degree of roasting and different varieties, from exclusive to the most common, and the technique will extract all the best from them.

Our TOP-5:

The best cappuccinatore coffee machines for the home in 2023: which one to choose?

Agree, when you spend money on a coffee machine, I would like it to be able to make not only classic espresso. Many, for example, love coffee with milk, and preferably cappuccino. Making such coffee is not difficult if the coffee machine has a cappuccinatore. In this review, we consider the best, in our opinion, coffee machines with a cappuccinatore from different price segments: there will be both inexpensive and more expensive - premium. The cappuccinatore can be manual, semi-automatic and automatic.

De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM 21.117

A great automatic coffee machine from De'Longhi.

It has an excellent appearance, a large volume of the water tank (1.8 liters), allows you to adjust the coffee temperature, portion size, water hardness. The built-in grinder allows De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM 21. 117 to use coffee beans.

But you will have to whip the milk for cappuccino yourself - a manual cappuccino maker is used.

At the time of writing, it is available in two colors: black or silver.

Cons

Saeco Lirika

A Saeco classic. Time-tested coffee machine, which, among other things, can be used in the office.

Pay attention to the compartments for water and coffee: if the volume of the first is an impressive 2. 5 liters, then the second is 500 g. This is more than enough for the office, let alone home use. However, many people use the Saeco Lirika in their home or apartment, simply because the machine makes great coffee.

The operation is very simple with buttons, there is a small display, a manual milk frother. Ground coffee is not supported, but this is never a minus.

If you want great coffee, a reliable coffee machine, and all this at a relatively low cost, Saeco Lirika is a great choice. By the way, for it you will find a lot of spare parts on the market, which we also attribute to advantages.

Cons

Melitta Caffeo Solo

Very stylish coffee machine from Melitta. Did you notice one curious detail? There is no cappuccinatore in principle! If this is a problem for you, scroll down the page, but we advise you not to.

The fact is that Melitta Caffeo Solo makes one of the most delicious coffees, if we talk about inexpensive coffee machines. It uses a very cool brewing unit, which is also known for its good reliability. If you drink cappuccino or latte only occasionally, you can simply purchase an electric cappuccino maker separately - this is very convenient.

In addition to the great taste of coffee Melitta Caffeo Solo can offer a stylish design, two colors, convenient and simple electronic control, a lot of settings, there is even a cup warmer.

Just be aware that the Melitta Caffeo Solo is not the best choice for the office because of the small compartments for water and coffee.

Cons

De'Longhi Autentica ETAM 29.660 SB

De'Longhi's chic coffee machine. Yes, it is not the cheapest in our review, but it uses an automatic cappuccino: just pour milk into the compartment, press the button and get a fragrant cappuccino.

This model makes excellent coffee with a slight sourness. It supports the use of both ground and grain coffee, and the volume of the water compartment reaches 1. 4 liters. The volume of the compartment for grain coffee is 150 g: you yourself understand that this option is not suitable for the office, but just right for a house or apartment.

There are a lot of settings and support for drinks such as cappuccino, latte, latte macchiato, americano, flat white, etc. In general, for every taste.

Cons

Saeco Lirika One Touch Cappuccino

You can see the peculiarity of this coffee machine right in its name: one touch cappuccino. For many users, this is very convenient, because in this case, cappuccino is prepared by pressing just one button.

In fact, we have before us the well-known Saeco Lirika model, which has expanded functionality. So, there was support for additional types of coffee drinks, including latte. If in the younger version there is no choice of the strength of the drink, then here it appeared.

With all this, the Saeco Lirika One Touch Cappuccino is great for office work due to its spacious compartments. It's also good in terms of reliability.

Cons

Nivona CafeRomatica NICR 520

How can you do without Nivona, a very famous company that makes coffee machines?

Nivona CafeRomatica NICR 520 is one of the junior models in the line. Although it is relatively inexpensive and quite simple, the NICR 520 can make coffee that tastes great. And all why? Because it uses the same platform as Melitta Caffeo. But there are nuances. So, there is a much larger compartment for water (2.2 l), as well as for coffee beans (250 g). Moreover, NICR 520 has got a ground coffee shaft.

The machine supports a wide variety of coffee drinks, including latte, cappuccino, espresso, lungo, etc. There are a lot of settings.

Cons

Bosch VeroCup 300 TIS30321RW

The Bosch VeroCup 300 TIS30321RW coffee machine turned out to be interesting, and it's not just the appearance of this coffee machine.

This is an unusual cappuccinatore: it seems to be both automatic and manual at the same time. To prepare the same cappuccino, you must manually lower the cappuccinator nozzle into a cup of milk, where it will froth the milk. Quite convenient, although the solution is unusual.

The coffee machine makes delicious coffee. The volume of the water tank is 1.4 liters, for grain coffee - 250 g. This is clearly not an office option. Note the convenient electronic control.

Cons

Nivona CafeRomatica NICR 550

The appearance of the Nivona CafeRomatica NICR 550 coffee machine very much resembles the NICR 520 model, in fact there are significant differences, which affected, among other things, the cost of the device.

There is still a large compartment for water (2.2 l) and coffee beans (250 g). It is possible to use ground coffee. The NICR 550 has a much cooler display with a lot of settings and even statistics. There is a separate menu item for washing the cappuccinatore, which tells you how to properly rinse the device. And from the unusual one can note the increased temperature of coffee drinks.

By the way, the brewing unit is the same as that of the NICR 520, while the coffee is even tastier - including by raising the temperature.

Cons

De'Longhi Dinamica ECAM 370.95 T

Great device from De'Longhi. This is a fully automatic coffee machine that can prepare a lot of coffee drinks.

A separate milk jug is used to create milk foam. The tank is 1.8 liters, the grain tank is 300 g, and in front you will see a large color display with convenient control keys. A burr coffee grinder with 13 degrees of grinding, a pump with a pressure of 19 bar, a waste container for 14 servings are installed.

Using the display and control keys, you can, for example, reprogram a recipe, ie change, say, the size of the coffee portion. And also De'Longhi Dinamica ECAM 370.95 T received the possibility of remote control through an application that can be installed on both iOS and Android.

Cons

Melitta Caffeo Solo&milk

The Melitta Caffeo Solo&milk coffee machine stands out, first of all, for its very stylish design, as well as its small width - only 20 cm. By the way, the model is available in both black and silver colors. Both options look great, but keep in mind that the black version picks up fingerprints decently and is generally quite easily soiled.

However, given the taste of coffee prepared by Melitta Caffeo Solo&milk, all this fades into the background. It uses the same platform as the Caffeo Solo model. Accordingly, the volume of compartments for water and coffee is just as small - 1.2 liters and 125 g, respectively. This is quite enough for home use, but frankly not enough for the office (it is important to consider that part of the water goes to flush the system).

The Solo&milk version differs from the Caffeo Solo in that it has a mechanical milk frother.

Cons

MAUNFELD MF-A7021GR

The MAUNFELD MF-A7021GR coffee machine is able to impress with its appearance alone: stylish, concise, nothing more.

This is a rather compact and narrow coffee machine (just over 18 cm wide). Touch control keys are located on the top of the case. On the front of it we see a coffee supply unit, as well as a manual cappuccinatore. Used pump pressure 19bar. The volume of the tanks is small: 1.1 liters for water and 160 g for coffee. This is more than enough for a house or apartment.

The easy cleaning system of the brewing unit is used. It supports adjusting the degree of grinding in the coffee compartment, adjusting the strength of the coffee and adjusting the cup size.

Cons

Jura E6 (EB)

Jura coffee machines have a lot of fans around the world, which, in general, is not surprising, given the incredible delicious coffee.

The Jura E6 (EB) is no exception: it produces one of the most delicious coffees in a coffee machine for home use. Here, of course, there is an automatic cappuccinatore, support for a huge number of coffee drinks, a lot of adjustments, and there is a large display.

The coffee machine has a good volume of compartments: 1.9 liters for water and 280 g for coffee beans. There is no support for ground coffee, it is simply not needed here, believe me.

Cons

Polaris PACM 2040S

Polaris PACM 2040S is one of the most inexpensive coffee machines, it does not even have a cappuccinatore. Nevertheless, we will tell about it, because in general this is an interesting solution.

The coffee machine is based on the well-known Colet platform. It has its own characteristics, we will highlight the positive ones, and these are: excellent taste of coffee drinks, fine grinding of coffee, quiet operation of the coffee machine during coffee preparation (quiet, of course, relatively). And the company also provides a 3-year warranty, which, you see, is very important when buying far from the cheapest electronic device.

If you want to make cappuccino or latte, you will have to use an electric cappuccinatore. And if you like espresso or americano, you can not buy anything extra at all.

Cons

Philips EP2231 Series 2200 LatteGo

This Philips coffee machine is a stylish addition to any kitchen. This automatic coffee machine is endowed with an automatic cappuccinatore, which itself will make milk foam.

Three types of coffee drinks are declared: coffee, espresso and cappuccino. On the front of the case, you can find a touch control panel with a large screen. There is a special Aroma Extract mode that maintains a balance between coffee brewing temperature and aroma intensity. The strength and volume of coffee is customizable. Coffee grinding levels - 12.

Philips also claims the easiest cappuccinatore cleaning in just 15 seconds.

Cons

Philips EP2021 Series 2200

Not the most expensive cappuccino machine in the Philips range. Please note that the cappuccinatore in this model is manual.

Two types of coffee are supported, bean and ground. On the front panel of the case - convenient touch control. There is the Aroma Extract system, which itself chooses the optimal balance between the temperature and the intensity of the coffee aroma. Specifies the hermetic design of the container, which keeps the coffee fresher longer. The shelf life of the millstones is at least 20,000 cups of coffee.

Some parts of the Philips EP2021 Series 2200 are dishwasher safe.

Cons

De'Longhi Autentica ETAM 29.510
