How to decorate a house for Halloween

The history of the Hallowen holiday has evolved over hundreds of years, weaving together pagan rituals and Christian traditions, hopes for a rich harvest and fear of otherworldly forces, mystical rituals and banal commerce. Someone perceives this day as an important cultural tradition, someone frankly frowns, considering it alien to our country, and someone sees it as another reason to have fun. Be that as it may, the "holiday of evil spirits" is an interesting and original phenomenon enough to learn more about it. Or maybe even circle it in red on your calendar.

First of all, whose holiday is Halloween? Tradition - or, if you turn to a credible scientific source, the Oxford Dictionary of Folklore - associates it with Samhain or Samhain (Samhain), an ancient Celtic holiday that once lived in the British Isles, and more specifically, England, Ireland, Scotland and northern France .

The Celts divided the year into two seasons: a hearty, warm summer, which was replaced somewhere at the junction of modern October-November by a cold and hungry winter (by the way, in Ireland, November is still called Samhain). It was necessary to prepare for it with all diligence: to celebrate the end of the harvest, to cleanse the houses of dark forces so that they would not harm on the sly in an already difficult time, to pay tribute to the dead, and to take a proper walk with noisy games and a rich feast.

With the advent of Christianity, Samhain did not disappear into oblivion - as before, peasants continued to celebrate it secretly, firmly holding on to the old customs. And as often happened, the clergy made a compromise, deciding not to ban the objectionable phenomenon, but to give it a new, more decent meaning. So in the VIII century, thanks to the decree of Pope Gregory III, November 1 became All Saints Day, and October 31 - its eve, literally All Hallows Even, later turned into Hallowen.

Gradually, the essence of the Halloween holiday as a day of harvest and the arrival of winter was forgotten, but the idea of a door to the other world that opens slightly at this time, through which malevolent forces and friendly spirits of ancestors are able to slip, received a new development. The former had to be frightened and driven away, for which scary costumes, terrible decor and lights in pumpkins were used, the latter should be welcomed and appeased with a generous treat.

Of course, today few people take all this seriously, although in many parts of Europe the tradition has been preserved on October 31st to perform cleansing rites for the home and guess at the future. But for the most part, people just try to have a good time and get a harmless dose of adrenaline, inventing frightening outfits for themselves and surprising guests with dishes that would otherwise give goosebumps.

Do they celebrate Halloween in Russia? Officially, no, in our country it has not received the scope inherent in All Saints' Day in Europe and the USA. But many people liked the original parties in the spirit of their favorite "horror films", so if you have a desire:

- you can do it. And get an overwhelming amount of positive emotions!

Halloween Traditions

Many Halloween customs that seem to us today to be just fun traditions grew out of rituals that were once of great importance. It is worth blowing away the age-old dust from them, and interesting things are revealed!

Jack's pumpkin - the main symbol of the holiday

Scientists believe that the famous Halloween decoration, a vegetable with a hollowed out core, was originally used to bring coal from the sacred fire of Samhain to the hearth. Who and when came up with the idea of carving funny faces on its walls is unknown, but with the advent of Christianity, this custom received a new explanation.

It turns out that the drunkard Jack is to blame for everything, who was lucky one day to deceive the Devil himself, persuading him to climb a tree for juicy fruit! While the unclean one was balancing on the branches, Jack carved a cross on the trunk, thus cutting off his path down. True, it ended badly for the guy: when the time came to die, sins were not allowed into the paradise of a lover of strong drinks, and the Devil resentfully slammed the doors of hell in front of him. Since then, the poor fellow has been wandering around the earth in anticipation of the Last Judgment and illuminates his path with a lantern made of turnips.

Yes, at first the turnips served as a receptacle for the sacred fire for the Celts and their descendants, and only with the arrival of the first settlers from the Old World to America did pumpkins, elegant, beautiful and large, come to the fore. A little later, at the beginning of the 19th century, charcoal was replaced by wax and paraffin candles, and now more and more often preference is given to safe electric ones.

Masquerade costumes

Halloween entertainment, beloved by children and young people, did not immediately take on its usual form. The ancient Celts walked around on the night of Samhain, dressed in animal skins and with faces smeared with coal, according to one version, scaring away the dark forces, according to another, hiding from them.

Over time, the costumes have lost their role and have become another way to give the atmosphere of the evening a mystical, mysterious flavor and to have fun hiding behind masks.

The appearance of the first full-fledged carnival costumes in the form that we are used to seeing them today was recorded only at the beginning of the 20th century, when the religious background of the holiday finally faded into the shadows and people began to think more about how to have a great Halloween, and not cheat evil spirits. At first, preference was given to the images of scarier folklore characters - witches, werewolves, vampires - and then they began to turn to literature and cinema. With the development of the media, primarily television, the fashion has come to portray media personalities, and today any ideas that can come to mind are in use. And although most of the celebrants continue to look for inspiration on the "dark side of the Force," on the night of November 1st, the Superhero and the Good Fairy are now as likely as the Dead Bride or Frankenstein.

Sweet or nasty?

Parents in Western countries rarely have to wonder "what to think of for children on Halloween?" Toddlers and teens know exactly what they will be doing on the evening of October 31st! Every year, as dusk approaches, flocks of kids dressed up in fancy dress roam the area and knock on doors with the phrase "trick or treat" - conventionally, "sweet or nasty." In part, this is reminiscent of our Russian carols.

The first mention of this custom appears in the Scottish manuscripts of 1895, where it is said that young people wearing fabric masks walk around the village on the evening of the holiday, depicting the souls of dead relatives or promising to pray for them, begging for refreshments and jokingly threatening to make them too tight-fisted some crap to the owners. Later documents testify that this custom, with minor changes, spread throughout almost all countries of Western Europe, and in our century has become purely child's play. Naturally, it is not customary to do nasty things even to those who do not give sweets, although sometimes the greedy door in the morning can be smeared with toothpaste, and the porch is painted with crayons.

Decoration of the yard and house

However, the little ones rarely go without sweets, as many adults willingly support the game and think over the decoration of the house more effectively for Halloween, giving a sign to the kids that they are expected here, and at the same time creating the appropriate atmosphere. The Americans are especially trying. Oh, here they approach this matter with soul and scope, sometimes arranging serious competitions with neighbors, whose decor will turn out scarier and more magnificent!

How are houses decorated for Halloween? There are a lot of options: toothy pumpkins are placed on the lawn, whole families of rubber zombies or skeletons are settled under the windows, cobwebs with giant spiders are hung over the porch, and witches on broomsticks are on the trees, fake blood and gloomy fiery lighting are generously used. Adults, like big children, try their best, sincerely enjoying the process.

Horrible holiday table

A hamburger with garlic fangs, a bunch of gelatin worms frozen in cocktail tubes, a sausage in dough swaddled in the shape of a mummy can easily make you smile at the table set for the evening meal on Halloween.

What can you cook for Halloween?

One of the "delicious" Halloween activities at home is sharing barmbrack, sweet yeast bread with small items baked inside. If you get a bean - you will be poor, a coin - rich, a ring - for a quick marriage ...

How to decorate your house for Halloween

How to decorate your apartment for Halloween - in the classic "spooky" way, with fun decor in the spirit of black humor, or, for example, in a frilly and sophisticated Victorian style, so in harmony with the theme of the holiday - everyone decides for himself. Most importantly, do not miss the opportunity to dream up and get the most out of creativity.

Pumpkin Jack

How to prepare for Halloween? Get a beautiful pumpkin! This is the main accessory of the holiday, without which it will simply not work to create the desired entourage! It is not difficult to make it - just cut off the top of the fruit with a sharp knife, carefully remove the seeds and pulp, cut out the contours of the eyes and mouth on the side, and then insert the candle inside and cover it with a lid. Even the most primitive pumpkin will look interesting, and if you have more or less confident carving skills or artistic taste to paint a vegetable with black gouache, it will turn out absolutely wonderful.

Idea: involve all family members in the solution of the question "how to decorate the house for Halloween", give everyone a pumpkin and arrange a real parade of toothy Jacks made in different techniques.

Candles

A fluctuating flame and a mysterious twilight with shadows dancing on the walls - what is required for the eve of All Saints' Day! And if at the same time pay a little attention to the decor of candles, the effect will be completely amazing. You can give preference to a gloomy duet of black and red, choose a candle with a thematic pattern or in the form of one of the heroes of the holiday.

Another great idea is an illuminated house that looks like a catholic church or a medieval castle.

Photo and panels

Black and white photos in artificially aged frames will help to decorate a Halloween room like an old abandoned mansion, in which a couple of ghosts probably live. These can be frightening portraits downloaded from the Internet or real shots with black masks pasted on people's faces and other catchy details.

Panels with black cats, mirrors in unusual frames, crimson feather boas, strands of black plastic beads, balloons of the same color or - a budget way - silhouettes of witches, crows and bats cut out of dark paper and attached to scotch.

Cobwebs

When they decorate the house with cobwebs hanging here and there from the ceiling and braiding the corners, it looks incredibly impressive. This is a definite must have! Pieces of gauze, picturesquely hung on the walls and backs of chairs, or black yarn, imitating a familiar elegant pattern, will perfectly cope with the role of a spider web.

Garlands

Luminous ghosts and pumpkins with toothy smiles hovering in the air will not take your eyes off! But be sure to think about how you can decorate the room for Halloween with a garland so that candles, nightlights and small LED lights do not compete with each other - let everyone have their own area of \u200b\u200bresponsibility.

In an ordinary city apartment, you can depict the "veil of hell" with a red LED curtain, spread out on the window, in the doorway or directly on the wallpaper.

Halloween Figures

There's so much to choose from! Giant spiders, phosphorescent skeletons, witches in black robes, skulls, beetles... Everything that fantasy tells.

Halloween entertainment

In addition to decor and treats, you should think about what to do with your guests so that the holiday really brings pleasure. Traditional Halloween party entertainment includes watching horror movies, telling scary stories in a room with the lights off, scary costume contests, and themed games.

For example:

When Halloween first appeared in Russia, few people understood how to celebrate it. However, over time, many people fell in love with a cheerful holiday of evil spirits, thanks to which you have many options for decorating it, depending on whether you are planning a noisy party for friends, a romantic evening for your soul mate, or an original holiday for your family. The main thing is the desire to spend the eve of November 1 in an unusual and fun way, so put in the effort and it will definitely pay off.

Preparing for Halloween is an exciting activity that will appeal to all family members

A little imagination and your house is ready for Halloween!

Even though Halloween is a Catholic holiday, it has long been informal and even entertaining: people arrange costume parties, decorate their homes and yards with mystical decor, and prepare special treats. Interior designer Elena Talskaya told Metro how to decorate the space of the house for the meeting of All Saints Day without much effort and with taste.

"Before you start decorating, you should think over the main theme of the holiday so that everything works out harmoniously. Possible themes for decoration: the Mexican holiday "Day of the Dead", a scary carnival with terrifying clowns, a vampire ball, or you can use a generalized symbolism of the holiday with pumpkins, ghosts, bats, etc. The main thing in Halloween is to create a mystical atmosphere. Do not create too scary mood, let the decorations be ironic, with a touch of black humor, "the expert advised.

The traditional colors of the holiday are orange, black and white. But imagination is not limited to them. The expert suggests pairing the color scheme with the same Halloween-classic purple, green, and yellow hues to create a colorful party: "If you complement the classic orange-black range with gold, the decor will become stylish and sophisticated. This design is suitable for a chamber dinner."

Complement the traditional orange and black color scheme with gold details for a special sophisticated dining experience.

When it comes to decorating your home for Halloween, pumpkins are one of the most popular decorations.

"According to tradition, a candle lantern is cut out of it, the so-called Jack's head. Silhouettes and "facial expressions" can be completely different - that's enough for your imagination. Of course, it is not necessary to actually carve a lantern, the idea can be repeated by drawing a "Jack's face" on the pumpkin itself or, for example, on balloons," said Elena Talskaya.

It is not necessary to carve a lantern out of a pumpkin - "Jack's face" can simply be drawn on it.

The interior designer also noted that color-matched balloons are the quickest and easiest way to decorate. You can use both letters and ready-made balloons with corresponding images or without them at all.

Balloons are the easiest way to decorate a space.

Another budget and atmospheric element is the use of compositions with dry branches placed in vases. You can supplement them with LED garlands (for example, New Year's, if it is white or yellow) and silhouettes of bats cut out of black paper.

Bats can be cut out of black paper and glued on with double-sided tape.

Decorative cobwebs and light paper garlands with holiday attributes can be stretched along the walls or near the ceiling. You can make them yourself or buy ready-made solutions, of which there are a lot now. Both drawings drawn with chalk markers and Halloween-themed silhouettes cut out of black paper look spectacular on the windows.

You can make a paper garland with your own hands, and take a luminous garland from New Year's stocks.

The expert suggests using seasonal flowers and vegetables in table decoration for the holiday: “Now there is a large selection of pumpkins in stores, including small decorative ones.
