Today, we’re chatting about an area that can be difficult to decorate… the space above your bed! Why is it so hard to choose something for this little area?

For me, personally, I often struggle with scale and I am never sure about the appropriate size for something to go above a headboard. Leaving it empty doesn’t always feel right, (although my minimalist heart loves this too) but doing something large and over-scaled doesn’t really fit my style.

With that in mind, I tend to look to my favorite interior designers for inspiration. How are they styling the space above a bed with wall decor? Can I mimic that look on a more affordable and personal scale?

Any kind of art can go above a bed, as long as it’s something you love! Play around with your favorite styles, textures and groupings.

Is it ok to hang a mirror above your bed?

Absolutely – mirrors can bring so much light into a room! Anything goes. Just be sure to attach it securely.

How big should artwork above bed be?

Art can be any size, and there really aren’t any rules when it comes to art over your bed. You can see so many examples of this right here in this post!

However, there are guidelines you can consider to help you make a choice you’ll love! When purchasing art to hang over a bed or sofa, a good guideline is to have it be 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the furniture. This can be more than one piece hung together, of course.

Again, this is just a guide. Small, more intimately scaled art can be beautiful and unexpected too!

The Best Ideas for Wall Art Above a Bed

Many of these ideas are classics. Some are less expected, but no less beautiful. Whatever you choose to hang over your bed, I hope it’s something that adds a calm, peaceful feeling to your bedroom. We all deserve that!

Add a Mirror

This is a classic look and one that is so easy to accomplish! However, it’s easy to go a little too crazy with mirrors in a bedroom, so be sure that a mirror over the bed is a focal point you’re not repeating.

In fact, this is a great place for a small mirror with a big frame. Consider a sunburst or something with a chunky molding so it’s more about the texture and less about the actual reflection.

Hang a Framed Art Print

This is such a classic, timeless look! Choose a framed art print that is incredibly inexpensive (start in my Amazon Storefront) or you can even choose free art that is available in the public domain!

This isn’t just for the holidays! Add an everyday wreath or a spring wreath, and change it out for the season for a fun switch.

One of my favorite tricks is to remove our year round wall art and add a wreath on that same nail for the holidays. It’s such a fun switch and one that is so easy to do!

Similarly, this year we added a sweet wintry print to hang over our bed all winter. I love the way it turned out, especially with the garland draped over our linen headboard.

As I said, the bedroom is the very room in the house where we relax , a place where we want to find peace and comfort. When choosing an interior for the bedroom, think about the paintings that you want to hang there.

They should carry peace and tranquility, but at the same time, match the spirit of your room, emphasize its style and features of the owner of the apartment.

To find out where it is better to hang a picture in the bedroom, how to do it according to Feng Shui and what are the basic rules, read this article to the end, look at the photos and get inspired to create a special atmosphere in your bedroom.

What pictures to hang on the wall in the bedroom

Bedroom interior paintings can be completely different: classic oil painting, watercolor sketches, acrylic interior paintings, as well as various photo posters, posters, modular paintings. Such a modular composition, consisting of several parts, can be either printed on photographic paper or painted on canvas. But keep in mind that voluminous modular paintings will draw all the attention to themselves and can become the main focus in the bedroom.

Pictures in the bedroom can simply be hung on the wall, or attached to the wall at the head of the bed. There are also some rules that it is not recommended to hang certain paintings in the bedroom, or vice versa, they will suit you:

  1. Do not place paintings in the bedroom if they do not match your character.
  2. Pay attention to the combination of the picture with the overall interior design of the room.
  3. Do not choose portraits of a third person if you share a bedroom with another person, and even more so, do not put pictures and photographs of deceased relatives.
  4. If you choose paintings for the bedroom of a man and a woman, then give preference to passionate subjects, or symbols of love, such as scarlet roses.
  5. A perfectly matched picture for the bedroom is a picture matched by color.
  6. Do not hang gloomy and sad pictures.
  7. Do not mix styles. If the room is decorated in Provence style, it is unlikely that avant-garde art nouveau painting will look beautiful there.

As you can see, there are a lot of options, so I propose to consider each one separately using examples.

Classic style bedroom paintings

Classic style interiors are ideal for oil paintings in a golden wood frame. By itself, the classical style embodies luxury, nobility, even some sophistication. Therefore, the choice of picture must be approached properly.

Reproductions of famous artists, such as the Impressionists, will look very nice. Designing such an interior, of course, will be a bit of a costly task, because the classic style is famous for the nobility of its materials, conciseness and the absence of unnecessary details in the interior.

The color palette of such a bedroom is also usually calmer. Therefore, it is worth giving preference to paintings painted in pastel colors. When choosing paintings for a classic interior, you need to be very attentive not only to the general style, but also to other decorative details: figurines, carpets, curtains, ottomans, pillows.

There is no room for asymmetry in a classic interior, everything should have strict geometry. Therefore, when prophesying a picture over some object, or a bed, make sure that it hangs strictly in the center.

Classical style - classical works. It will be just fine if you find reproductions of paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet and other famous artists. Choose picturesque landscapes, and if you have a talent for drawing, then create the work yourself - this will be very symbolic.

Choose a frame for such a picture from natural wood, and if you want to hang several pictures, decorate them in the same style. So your bedroom will become even cozier and more ideal.

Bedroom paintings for couples

Family bedroom is the unity of two people. Double paintings and various diptychs, images of paired animals and so on will look very good.

In principle, here, in the same way, you must first of all proceed from the style of your room, its color and other interior items. Having decided on the style, you can choose a picture in several directions:

  1. Love theme - ideal for a couple.
  2. A poster featuring love couples from classic movies.
  3. Photos of you and your significant other, capturing a moment where you are together and happy.

Feng Shui paintings for the bedroom

Many people believe that Feng Shui paintings should be hung in the bedroom. This method will help you bring harmony to your bedroom and make the atmosphere more conducive. When choosing paintings according to this principle, several rules should also be distinguished:

  1. Don't hang a painting in a bedroom that shows one person.
  2. To strengthen family relationships, hang a picture of a beautiful house.
  3. Peonies, orchids, poppies are perfect for a couple's bedroom.
  4. If you are buying a hand-painted painting, try to find out why it is being sold. You do not need bad energy in the house.
  5. Hang up posters and photos with children if you want to have offspring soon.
  6. Do not hang pictures with the water element.
  7. Always frame your pictures beautifully.

According to Feng Shui, it is necessary to divide the total space of the room into separate small zones, therefore, be guided by this when you select a picture in each of them. Place pictures on only one wall and don't get too carried away with the number of pictures. The plot of all paintings should be united by one theme, but try to avoid additional decorations - figurines, caskets and other things.

Bedroom paintings by color

Pay attention to the style and proceed from its features.

A painting in harmony with the color of the bedroom will help create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, especially if you match it with bed linen, curtains, decorative pillows.

If you choose contrasting paintings, do not overdo it with color, otherwise it will be difficult for you to relax your eyes and relax in such an environment.

Bedroom paintings by shape and size

Choose medium to large size paintings for your bedroom that will make your room look bigger and more spacious.

Several paintings of different sizes should be aligned along the bottom edge and hung at eye level so as not to visually distort the space.

In terms of shape, give preference to square and rectangular paintings, but if round and oval objects, such as a mirror, are already hanging in the bedroom, then you can safely choose a less traditional version of the form.

Paintings for the bedroom according to the plot

The plot is also a very important criterion for choosing a painting for the bedroom. It should be beautiful and you should like it.

Pictures of horses, for example, symbolize energy and determination. Wild animals and birds exude aggressive energy, so it is not advisable to use them in the bedroom.

Beautiful landscapes in soothing colors carry favorable energy and charge you with good emotions. As, however, and still lifes, especially with juicy fruits - symbols of summer and warmth.

Pictures of angels symbolize peace and order, such pictures should be hung if you want to find some inner harmony and peace.

Water for the bedroom is a negative and undesirable plot, although if you really want to, you can hang a picture, but only with a calm and transparent water element.

Where to hang pictures in the bedroom according to Feng Shui

Place pictures in the bedroom above the bed. This will visually highlight the center of your room, unless your headboard is too high.

If you want to place a picture on the wall opposite your bed, be guided by the goal you want to achieve with the picture - to relax or cheer up when looking at the picture.

If you have bedside tables on both sides of the bed, you can also hang pictures above them. But then they should be in the same style and, of course, on both sides.

You can also place paintings from the side wall, but in the same way, hang it symmetrically, and if there are several, then exactly along one bottom line.

What to avoid

From panels with dried flowers, images of insects, abstract paintings, symbols and signs, the meaning of which you do not know, for example, hieroglyphs.

What picture to hang in the bedroom at the head of the bed

Traditionally, the most favorable pictures for the head of the bed are pictures depicting flowers, as well as what the owners of the room would like to achieve or desire.

Pictures depicting the water element, misfortunes and dead people, as well as wild animals will bring bad energy.

There are also restrictions on color. According to Feng Shui, paintings in natural and soothing colors and shades are suitable for the bedroom: yellow, blue, brown.

In general, this ancient teaching involves a long and conscious choice of paintings for your home. Therefore, do not rush and immediately buy the first picture you like. It is better to look at different options and think about how this or that thing will look in your home. By the way, one of the main principles of Feng Shui is that you like the picture, and, looking at it, you experience only positive emotions.

Pictures in the bedroom by location

As I wrote above, according to Feng Shui, pictures in the bedroom are best placed on one wall. If you place them on the sides of the bed, then these should be paired paintings. At the head, if it is not high - strictly in the center.

If you place near the adjacent walls, you can hang a few paintings, as long as they are all symmetrical to other objects in the room.

It is also better to hang a picture in front of the bed symmetrically to it and at eye level when you are sitting in bed.
