One of the most important decisions to make when you first start working on a new design is what the background will look like. Monochromatic, neutral, with trendy details like geometric shapes, gradients, textures? A cool backdrop can take a project to a whole new level.

When you're designing backgrounds, it's important to keep the latest trends in mind. A fashionable background shows that users have a modern site with relevant content. In addition, it becomes clear that you think about their needs and make the most of the tools that make the interaction experience more convenient and enjoyable.

So how do you create a cool background? We present you with a list of trends and styles where you will definitely find something suitable for your next project.

1. Subtle shapes

Delicate geometric shapes behind other interface elements can be a great addition to your design. Thin lines and desaturated colors look original and do not distract attention from other more important elements of the site.

You can make this solution even more effective if you use geometric shapes in the same way on all pages. Most importantly, make sure that the form and style match the content.

Feel free to experiment, such as flipping objects, testing different shades, and adding simple animation effects. Your task is to make the design feel the right way for the audience, and additional elements in the background will only make it more interesting.

A good example

The Simple Line Handdrawn Patterns are composed of thin lines that fit perfectly with this design trend. Play with sizes and placements to make them work for you.

2. Layered background images

We ourselves didn't expect to see this trend in our list - a photo background layer behind other objects, including text, images or video.

As a rule, we are talking about large-format, easy-to-read images, on top of which the content of the site is placed. They work best when they provide users with additional information to help them understand what the site is about. The problem is that if such a background is not well thought out, the design can be overloaded.

Look for images that are easy to darken or fade, and content that is easy to understand at a glance. As a rule, photos that match the overall color palette of the site, and include a lot of free space that transitions from one part of the background to another, are best suited here.

A good example

‍Beautiful Seascape is an example of a spectacular photo backdrop that will be an excellent basis for content. If necessary, the colors can be muted.

3. 3D space

Users are drawn to 3D backgrounds because they look and feel real. Users can practically immerse themselves in the design and become part of what they see on screen, and that has its own charm.

Modern 3D backgrounds are more than just shadows and shapes that create depth. They also include animations and textures to make them look more realistic.

In order for a 3D background to be really cool, it must either be believable, that is, reproduce reality, or completely implausible, that is, look like something imaginary. There is a fine line here, so it takes practice to get it right.

Good example

‍Abstract 3D Background combines depth and movement to create a stunning effect. You can also make your 3D background dynamic, but you have to be careful not to make the result dizzy.

4. Overlapping elements on top of each other

Now it is not necessary to place the background and foreground elements at a distance from each other. Their fusion creates amazing depth, a 3D effect (as shown above) and helps users feel like they are part of the design.

This trend continues the general trend we saw in 2020 and 2021 of merging illustrations and real-life images. These compositions now tend to use geometric shapes and bright colors combined with image fragments to create a less cartoony visual.

Vibrant colors, extra details, as well as shadows and other ways of creating depth help make these designs even more interesting.

5. "Liquid" backgrounds

"Liquid" backgrounds look very impressive, which is why their popularity is constantly growing.

Both look attractive, and even a static background creates a sense of movement. As far as animation is concerned, having liquid flowing smoothly across the screen often has a calming effect.

6. Photo with overlay

The key to creating an effective overlay background is to use enough color so that the foreground elements remain clearly visible, without obscuring the background too much.

7. Saturated translucent layer

Unlike the previous trend, this trend is to use a saturated color translucent layer over an image or video. Although this effect creates a lot of contrast with the elements in the foreground, it makes the background image almost illegible.

This is exactly what the designer is trying to achieve with his help. This approach works best when the background image doesn't play much of a role and serves primarily to provide additional texture so that the background isn't a solid block of color.

Be careful when choosing images or videos. They should blend into the background and not be so interesting that people try to see and understand them.

8. Watercolor

Watercolor backgrounds — a new look at illustrations in website design. This trend includes all images that have such a texture, as if drawn by hand.

What's great about watercolor—and perhaps that's what makes it so popular—is that the style has a certain softness that some of the rougher backgrounds lack. In addition, the watercolor looks authentic, which makes the content that the user is about to explore feel unique.

Finally, the watercolor looks unusual. Namely, many modern designers are increasingly striving to give their projects this note.

9. Full screen video

You may never have thought of text as a background element, but it can be.

Large inscriptions in expressive type are usually surrounded by images or even occupy the entire space.

This is probably one of the more difficult ways to design a background, as you need to find a balance between font, images, and responsiveness while maintaining readability.

Boxer is a whimsical slab typeface that, thanks to its thick lines, is perfect for backgrounds.

11. Unobtrusive textures

There are many different textures, but it seems that the most popular are specks (most often white) on a plain background.

These textures make the background look rough and make the design look a little less than perfect. The best part is that this trend goes with almost everything, and you can even combine it with the rest of the trends on the list. (In the example above, both video and texture are used).

Who says background images have to be static?

A clever hover animation adds the right movement to the background. This method works with photographs, illustrations, and even patterns or textures.

The trick is to surprise and impress the user unexpectedly. Until the hover animation appears, users are not even aware of its existence.

To make the most of this trend, create a subtle movement. In the example above, the image bounces a bit on hover.

13. Layered, narrative illustrations

Another trend that is constantly changing and developing is illustrations. While designers have been using them to create backgrounds for a long time, images are now more complex, layered and even animated.

Some illustrations are eye-catching and memorable. The tricky part is that these backgrounds can be filled with details, so you have to carefully plan the placement and decoration of other elements.

The illustration in the example above is almost perfect. Thanks to the location, as well as unpretentious animation effects, it complements the text and the rest of the design well.

14. Color blocking

“Color-blocking” (literally translated as “creating color blocks”) is a trend that goes beyond one discipline. You will find it in fashion, home decor, website design.

This approach works great for backgrounds, as it allows you to get bright and, thanks to the layering, visually interesting solutions. You can use different color combinations (which is great for brands), and creating a similar background is not at all difficult.

Add a bright or light background layer and then a second "background" of a different color. You can see this in the portfolio site example above, with a white background and individual elements in blue boxes.

15. Colors from flat design

One aspect of flat design that has never lost popularity is color. Now they are back as backgrounds.

It's not just about choosing bolder shades, it's also about using them flat. No gradients, no transitions, just a plain background.

These backgrounds often feature realistic images. Sometimes they have a border or another background behind to create depth. (You can see this effect in the example above: a white border around a beige background with an image in the foreground).

16. Geometric shapes

Circles, polygons and other geometric shapes are an important part of background design.

They can be reminiscent of childhood or just be a fun alternative to all the flat solid color backdrops that have been in vogue before. To keep the geometry looking modern, stick to a solid color palette and use contrasting elements to make the most of the background.

These backgrounds can be quite flashy, as in the example above, or have a muted color palette with subtle undertones.

17. Line patterns

With so many options, you're sure to find one that works with your color palette and layout.

19. Bubbles and blobs

Although bubbles and blobs (organic forms - spots, drops) may resemble geometric shapes, they differ in that they are often in motion, and the forms themselves are rather imperfect.

20. Wood texture

To make the most of this background, try to match the color of the wood and the width of the boards to match the elements of the foreground. Do not place elements in the "gaps" between the boards.

I just love writing, translating and letting people read interesting content. And even though I'm not always perfect - there is something to strive for !!!

One of the most important design decisions to make early on is what kind of background your future project will have. Should it be solid, colorless, trendy elements such as geometric shapes, gradients or woodgrain patterns? Or will a solid background design help the project really shine?

It is equally important to keep up with trends when it comes to background design style. A trendy background choice shows that the website design is modern and the content is new. A modern visual framework can even signal to the user that you are thinking about their needs and making the most of the tools that will make their experience better.

Now let's explore the top 15 background design trends for 2020 that you can try on your next project.

1. Full screen video

Video has been a staple of background design for a few years, but it's getting a bit of a reinvention with this trend: full-screen background video.

Responsive forms allow designers to scale videos to fit the screen. Like the example above, this trend focuses on video with minimal effects and elements surrounding it.

An almost cinematic experience attracts users and can be very interesting with the right video clip. To make the most of this background design trend, find a video that has a lot of movement and action.

2. Text in background

You don't have to think of text as a background element, but it's possible.

This can be one of the toughest background trends as you need to maintain a balance between lettering, images and responsiveness while still maintaining readability.

3. Fine textures

Subtle background textures can add depth and dimension to a project.

There are all sorts of textures to try, but the dominant trend is specks (most often white) over a solid color.

This texture style provides a rough background element and adds a sense that the design is not overly polished. The best part about this trend might be that it works with just about anything, and you can even pair it with other background trends. The example above uses video and a texture.

4. Hover Animation

Who said that background images have to be static?

Another background trend that is rapidly developing is the use of illustrations. While designers have been using illustrations in the background for quite some time, these illustrations are more complex with layered scenes and even a bit of animation.

An illustration can be attractive and memorable. The difficulty with illustration is that these backgrounds can be quite stressful and you will have to carefully plan the placement and style of the other elements.

Color blocking has been a design trend that transcends disciplines. You will find it in fashion, home decor and website design.

What's great about this background design style is that it can be bright and layered, visually interesting. This style works with multiple color palettes - which can be very good for brands - and doesn't create an overly complex or hard-to-find background.

Use a color-blocked layer with a bright or light background, and then add a second "background" of a different color. You can see this in the website example above with a white background and then individual elements in blue boxes.

As a "foreground" background element, such as the example above. Bubbles and blobs are often moving shapes that pop up in a design to create a more layered effect, but are "background elements" because they serve no other functional role than to grab the user's attention.

13. Abstract shapes

There are many shapes and designs that make for a beautiful background but don't fit into any one category. All of these elements can be classified as a universal "abstract" category.

Abstract background elements exist purely for visual interest. They can create a focus point next to an element that users need to see, develop a sense of space and depth, or simply provide a layer for other elements.

While abstract backgrounds are a "no-nonsense" design, it's good to have some organization and a sense of pattern when working with them so that the design doesn't leave users feeling chaotic.

14. Wood
