Our top pick is the Shark Navigator Upright Vacuum, which is one of the best vacuums for allergies and a surprisingly affordable option. It boasts a number of features that will help remove allergens from your home, including a HEPA filter and anti-allergy seal. The filter successfully traps 99.99 percent of dust and allergens, and the anti-allergen seal ensures the sucked-up particles don’t escape the hoses or dirt canister. This bagless, upright vacuum also has swivel steering for better control, and it comes with an upholstery tool and pet brush to help you get hair and dirt off your furniture, making it a great option for allergy sufferers who share a home with the family dog or cat.

Although this vacuum does have a lift-away option, it's still not the most effective option for cleaning under narrow spaces, but luckily its attachments can help you reach under furniture. A multi-surface workhorse, you can use the Shark Navigator upright vacuum on carpets, rugs, and hard floors throughout your home. It even has a button that allows you to lift off the canister for increased portability and easy cleaning of hard-to-reach places. LED lights allow you to easily see the vacuum's cleaning path, so you don't miss any dust bunnies or stray pet hair. All in all, this vacuum is a great option for anyone who suffers from allergies, has pets, or just wants to ensure their space is as free from particulates as possible.

Dyson Ball Animal 2, the Ultimate Pet Hair Removal Machine

What We Like

What We Don't Like

This model is a runner-up just by a hair. If price point and weight (this vacuum is five pounds heavier than our overall pick) aren’t deterrents for you, the Dyson boasts many of the same features as the Shark. It has a HEPA-filtration system, as well as radial root cyclone technology, which makes it superior for capturing microscopic particles that could trigger your allergy symptoms.

This bagless vacuum has a self-adjusting cleaning head that automatically optimizes suction depending on what type of surface you’re cleaning. Its ball technology makes it easy to steer, and it has an impressive 13.4-inch cleaning path so you can make quick work of even the largest rooms. Plus, you’ll get a stair tool, motorized brush, combination accessory tool, extension wand, flexible hose, and tangle-free turbine attachment, which has a counter-rotating, clog-preventing design made specifically with pet hair in mind. With these attachments at your disposal, you’ll be able to remove allergens from every nook and cranny of your home.

This bagless model from Hoover proves that you can clear your home of allergens at any price point. It deftly sucks up dust, pollen, and pet dander thanks to its HEPA filter, and its suction system is specifically designed to dredge up and remove dirt, even if it’s embedded deep into carpet fibers. The WindTunnel 2 adjusts to accommodate and clean different floor surfaces, with a brush roll that can be raised while cleaning hardwood floors to prevent debris from scattering.

The accompanying tools and attachments make sure your whole house gets the same thorough cleaning as your floors: The Hoover’s crevice tool tackles corners and nooks while its Pet Turbo Tool applies additional suction to extract tangled pet hair from carpets and upholstery. And the 16-foot hose reaches inaccessible dust hotspots, like the tops of cabinets, doorways, and shelves.

With a robot vacuum, you can work less and relax more. The iRobot Roomba E5 Robot Vacuum is one of the few robotic vacuums with a high-efficiency filter, and its ability to pick up dirt, dust, and other particles makes it a great tool for ridding your home of allergens.

This Wi-Fi connected robot vacuum can be controlled from your smartphone—you can create a custom cleaning schedule, start the tool remotely, and view cleaning maps. The three-stage cleaning system provides five times more suction than other robot vacuums, and the high-efficiency filter captures 99 percent of allergens, dust, and pollen.

Additionally, the Roomba E5 boasts an edge-sweeping brush, automatic height adjustment for carpets and floors, and rubber brushes to capture more debris. While its compact design is a definite plus for cleaning smaller homes and areas that upright vacuums can’t reach, the Roomba’s container tends to fill up quickly, which could become tiresome in a household with multiple shedding pets. It should also be noted that emptying a Roomba requires coming into closer contact with all the dirt and allergens it sucks up than you would with an upright vacuum.

Many modern vacuum cleaners are bagless, but if you prefer a bagged vacuum, which actually keeps dust and allergens trapped even when you empty it, one of your best options is the Kenmore Elite Pet & Allergy Friendly Upright Vacuum. This model is actually certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, so you know it’s a good choice for allergy season.

This upright vacuum’s 3D Inducer motor system has more power than the average upright, and the vacuum has five height adjustments so you can efficiently clean both hard floors and thick carpets. It features a HEPA filter to capture all those microscopic particles, as well as an infrared dirt sensor that detects dust and dirt you might not be able to see. The Kenmore Elite comes with three attachments and a telescoping wand. However, this model is on the heavier side, weighing in at 20 pounds.

This top-rated stick vacuum delivers an impressive amount of power for a battery model, and it even has a whole-machine HEPA filtration system that captures the allergens that are making you stuffy.

This cordless vacuum delivers up to 40 minutes of run time with a regular attachment and 25 minutes with the motorized floor tool. There’s even a max mode for when you need more suction. This lightweight stick vacuum comes with a variety of attachments, including a soft roller cleaner for hard floors, and it easily converts into a more compact handheld model.

If you need to tackle larger messes or clean your garage or workshop, you might want a wet/dry vac, which can suck up liquids in addition to the usual dirt and dust. The Vacmaster 8-Gallon HEPA Vac is by far the superior choice in this case, as it has a certified HEPA system, including a microfiber pre-filter, high-efficiency fine dust filter bag, and exhaust filter.

This industrial-style vacuum has an 8-gallon, crush-proof tank, as well as a two-stage motor that’s surprisingly quiet, given the Vacmaster’s size. The hose is crush-proof as well, and there’s a foam filter sleeve for when you need to clean up wet materials.

Final Verdict

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away ADV Upright Vacuum is our overall pick for vacuums that thwart allergies for its HEPA filter and anti-allergy seal. It effectively traps allergens and comes at a relatively affordable price. The Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum is also highly recommended, though it comes with a heftier price tag. In return, you get a powerhouse of a vacuum that can capture allergens on a microscopic scale, thanks to its radial root cyclone technology.

Filter Technology

When in doubt, check to see if your vacuum of choice comes equipped with a HEPA bag or filter. This means that it can remove at least 99.97 percent of allergens found in your home, including mold, dander, and dust. If it comes with a certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, all the better. Some models don't feature HEPA filters exactly, but nonetheless have sophisticated filtration systems that are designed for a similar degree of efficiency.

Bagged vs. Bagless

Bagless vacuums are generally the less expensive option over time, because they don't require new replacement bags on a regular basis. Though they come with this additional expense, bagged vacuums may offer a level of security for allergy sufferers that bagless models cannot. "Bagged vacuums are extremely hygienic and securely trap dirt and debris," Melissa Witulski, brand standards manager at Merry Maids, explains. All that dust and dander stays safely sealed away, even when the time comes to throw away and replace the bag. If you're concerned about cleaning out your new vacuum and potentially re-releasing allergens into your home, a bagged vacuum will give you some much-needed peace of mind.

Surface

Dirt and dust tend to get embedded into furniture fibers and carpets, to the point that you need a powerful vacuum with the right attachments and features to extract them properly. If your home is carpeted or you have area rugs in many rooms, look for a vacuum with adjustable height settings to accommodate varying piles. Witulski adds that you should use a vacuum without a beater bar when cleaning carpeting made of natural or looped fibers. Carpet owners should also look for a model that comes with an upholstery brush. If your home primarily has hard or bare floors, look instead for a vacuum with a gentle cleaning head that will prevent debris scatter.

A vacuum that can contain the spread of dust and debris can be invaluable if you suffer from allergies. A HEPA filter is a good starting point, as it can help trap allergens as you clean. A dirtbag can also be a handy addition since it reduces the chances of having dust escape when emptying the appliance. Overall cleaning performance is important, especially when trying to pick up debris like pet hair or dust. While those aren't the only criteria for this list, they are the most important in determining whether or not a vacuum will be effective in reducing the spread of allergens.

We've tested more than 125 vacuum cleaners, and below are our recommendations for the best vacuum cleaners for allergies. These recommendations are based not only on their cleaning performance on different types of surfaces and the inclusion of a HEPA filter but also on their design and price. For more buying recommendations, look at our lists of the best HEPA vacuums, the best cordless vacuums for pet hair, and the best robot vacuums for pet hair.

The SEBO Airbelt D4 is the best vacuum for allergies we've tested. This high-end canister vacuum delivers superb performance on most surfaces and features an S-Class filtration system made up of a three-layer dirtbag, a pre-motor filter, and a micro-fiber exhaust filter that's remarkably effective in trapping allergens like dust or pollen. Its sealed canister body feels very well-built and is remarkably easy to maintain. Recurring costs are very low for a bagged model because it uses dirtbags with a large capacity and long-lasting filters. Performance is very strong across a range of surfaces, even with a simple straight suction floorhead, though you still might want to purchase SEBO's ET-1 or ET-2 powerhead for cleaning carpets.

That said, this vacuum has a somewhat stiff hose and is a little on the heavier side, making it a little more of a hassle to maneuver around in very tight areas compared to alternatives like the Miele Complete C3. The Miele is also an excellent choice if you suffer from allergies, as it has an allergen-sealed construction, uses the manufacturer's proprietary AirClean 3D dirtbags, and can be bundled with a HEPA filter, all of which contribute to its ability to filter out 99. 9% of common allergens. That said, it has a shorter range than the SEBO, uses much smaller dirtbags, and its filters don't last as long, resulting in higher recurring costs.

The best upper mid-range vacuum for allergies that we've tested is the Roborock H7. It doesn't have the same level of deep-cleaning performance as the SEBO Airbelt D4 and isn't quite on par in terms of allergen-sealing, but its cordless design makes it a lot easier to deploy for the occasional clean up. Unlike many other cordless stick vacuums, it comes with an adapter that allows you to fit a miniature dirtbag within its dirt compartment, helping to improve air filtration performance when combined with its onboard HEPA filter. It delivers impressive performance on bare floors and does a decent job on carpets.

It can run for more than 90 minutes in its most energy-efficient mode, which gives you plenty of time to deal with lightweight debris. While its runtime drops to a little over 10 minutes in its high-power 'MAX' mode, that's normal for a vacuum of this type. However, it doesn't come with a second battery that can extend its overall runtime, so it isn't as well-suited for quick clean-ups.

If you're shopping at a mid-range price point, the best HEPA vacuum for allergies we've tested is the Airsign HEPA Vacuum. It doesn't have the grab-and-go convenience of the Roborock H7, but it is cheaper and better-suited for longer clean-ups due to its corded design. It has an onboard HEPA filter with charcoal filtration, helping to seal in fine allergens and minimize odor, and uses biodegradable dirtbags with a built-in seal cover. It's partially made from recycled materials, which is great if you're looking for a more environmentally-conscious vacuum. It feels decently well-built for the most part and has a simple design that's easy to maintain. The canister body is pretty compact, enabling you to store it in small closets without too much effort.

Performance on most surfaces is good, even with a basic straight suction floorhead. However, if you plan on cleaning dense carpeting, consider an upper-range variant of the Miele Classic C1, which can come with a turbo or electrobrush floorhead. That said, the entry-level C1 Pure Suction model, which is priced similarly to the Airsign, also only comes with a straight-suction floorhead and doesn't come bundled with a HEPA filter.

If you don't mind exchanging the compact size and maneuverability of a canister vacuum like the Airsign HEPA Vacuum for a lower purchase price, the Kenmore Intuition Bagged is worth considering. It has an onboard HEPA filter and uses dirtbags made of HEPA-rated media, reducing the spread of fine particles while cleaning. It's also worth noting that its dirtbag can be quickly released from its housing with the press of a single latch, meaning there shouldn't be a large plume of dust released while disposing of it. Unfortunately, there's no way of adjusting its floorhead height, so you might have trouble climbing onto uneven surfaces, like shag carpeting.

This vacuum does a fantastic job of cleaning pet hair as well as small and bulky debris on surfaces like hardwood or linoleum. There's even a brushroll on/off switch for its floorhead, so it shouldn't send larger debris scattering everywhere when cleaning flat floors. It performs impressively well on low and high-pile carpet too. Its 'Lift-Up' design lets you pick up and carry its canister body separately from its upright portion, making it easier to clean tight spots.

The best vacuum for pet hair and allergies at a budget-friendly price point that we've tested is the BISSELL Zing Bagged Canister. While it doesn't come bundled with a HEPA filter, you can buy aftermarket HEPA-rated bags and a HEPA filter to improve its air filtration performance and trap most airborne particles like pet dander or pollen. That said, it doesn't have an allergen-sealed body, so you'll still want to step up to a pricier model like the Airsign HEPA Vacuum or Miele Classic C1 if you suffer from very serious allergies and need the extra layer of filtration. It's small enough to be stored in most closets and weighs very little, making it easy to drag around from room to room. Unusually for a vacuum in this price bracket, its power cord can be rewound with the press of a button, though be aware that it's short.

With its floorhead bristles retracted, this vacuum does a good job of cleaning up solid debris on low and high-pile carpeting, but it struggles with bulkier debris, which can clog its suction inlet. Pet hair also tends to get stuck in its floorhead when the bristles are extended. Consider the Eureka Mighty Mite if you're looking for a more budget-conscious vacuum that delivers a stronger overall performance. You can use aftermarket HEPA-rated bags and a HEPA filter with the Eureka, but be aware that some models have vents behind their rear wheels, bypassing any post-motor filtration and negating the benefit of using a HEPA filter.

            Notable Mentions

            • Samsung Jet 90 Complete: The Samsung Jet 90 Complete is a cordless stick vacuum that delivers superb performance on bare floors and features a five-stage filtration system. However, you can't use it as a bagged vacuum, unlike the Roborock H7. See our review
            • Samsung Bespoke Jet: The Samsung Bespoke Jet is a good alternative to the Roborock H7 if you don't mind paying a lot more. You can't use it as a bagged vacuum; however, it comes with a 'Clean Station' accessory that acts as both a charging station and a self-emptying dock that sucks debris from its dustbin into an external dirtbag without generating a plume of dust. See our review
            • Hoover WindTunnel Tempo Bagged : The Hoover WindTunnel Tempo Bagged is a basic, budget-friendly upright vacuum that can use HEPA-rated dustbags. However, it's trickier to maneuver than the Kenmore Intuition Bagged. See our review
            • NaceCare HVR 200 Henry: The NaceCare HVR 200 Henry is a great alternative to the Airsign HEPA Vacuum, thanks to its longer range and use of much larger dirtbags. That said, you'll need to spend a fair bit more on a variant with a HEPA filter. See our review
            • Dyson V15 Detect: The Dyson V15 Detect is a high-end cordless stick vacuum that performs exceptionally well on a wide range of surfaces. It has a dirt sensor that counts and measures the size of debris being sucked into the vacuum, which could be handy if you want to know about the presence of fine allergens in your home. However, unlike the Roborock H7, you can't use it as a bagged vacuum. See our review
            • Dyson Ball Animal 3: The Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is a bagless upright vacuum with a HEPA-rated five-stage filtration system that's effective in sealing in common allergens like pet dander and is a good alternative to the Airsign HEPA Vacuum if you don't feel like buying a replacement dirtbag now and then. However, emptying its dustbin can still release a large plume of dust. See our review
