Perched atop a historic Neo-Georgian mansion just steps from Central Park, Anne Hathaway's house is a picturesque two-bedroom penthouse and its coveted south-facing terrace recently underwent a meticulous renovation.

The Hollywood actress and her partner Adam Schulman bought the two-bedroom Upper West Side property four years ago for $2.5 million and have now put it on the market with Sotheby’s International Realty for $3.4 million.

Inside, the home is a study of understated elegance, just as you would expect from the Academy Award-winning actress, who is known for her roles in Les Miserables, for which she won Best Supporting Actress, The Devil Wears Prada and Alice in Wonderland. Why not take the tour?

Exterior

Anne Hathaway's house was painstakingly redesigned by Gramercy Design to utilize every square inch, replicate original and period moldings, and seamlessly integrate modern conveniences. All of the windows are new in-swing French casements, and the white oak floors are in a classic herringbone pattern.

The Les Misérables star and her actor-producer husband recently renovated the coveted south-facing terrace, while original period features inside have been restored or replicated to create character.

Living room

One enters the penthouse via a private key-locked elevator, which opens to an elegant gallery leading to the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. Light floods into the living area in particular, which overlooks the beautiful terrace.

A perfect space for entertaining, the light-filled living room features an ethanol fireplace and opens to the terrace: an outdoor oasis offering indoor-outdoor living, dining space for up to eight, a kitchen, areas for lounging, integrated lighting, audio, and irrigation, and views of the area’s landmarks, including the Dakota and the San Remo.

Kitchen

The state-of-the-art kitchen boasts 18-foot ceilings with a skylight, which makes it as bright and airy as the living room. The actress has furnished it tastefully with Lumix quartzite countertops, cleverly concealed cabinetry, appliances from Miele and a 30-inch electric range.

Open shelving is kept neat and attractive with a selection of favorite ceramics on show. The white handleless cabinetry is a classic choice that won't date – instead it creates a streamlined effect that makes the room feel still larger.

In the home’s private wing, the sunlit master suite features a skylight with electric shades, a walk-in closet, and bath with a freestanding tub and stylish hardware from Waterworks and Barber Wilsons.

The well-proportioned second bedroom is accompanied by a full bath clad in Aurora Blue marble.

The terrace was landscaped by Jeffrey Erb Landscape Design, with the intention to feel like an extension of the living room.

Jeffrey's unique attention to detail for outdoor spaces in an urban environment combined with his installation and horticulture experience allow him to create some of the most luxurious private residential gardens in New York City.

Large containers are planted with Japanese acer and box hedging, while shading on the pergola provides some relief from hot New York summers – and adds to the feeling of privacy.

Anne Hathaway House: $6,400 a month apartment at DUMBO for a more cautious actress

Anne Hathaway looked like she was about to go through a phase of celebrity life without forcing any of the tabloid parties and downfalls of her co-stars from the young actress. Her "Old Hollywood" beauty, comic timing, and well-crafted performances were enough to keep her in the headlines, and her uber-romantic relationship with Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri seemed fine. It was then revealed that her boyfriend is a money launderer, among other creepy scammers, and she was forced to leave the posh apartment they shared, endure numerous tabloid headlines, and mostly hide under the public scrutiny. In other words, she has become much more like her fellow actresses. Understandably, she's been more careful since then, both with what she does in public and who she chooses to spend her time with. Any recent headlines associated with her have been related to her upcoming film projects such as The Dark Knight Rises and Les Miserables, for which she recently chopped off all her hair. She is currently involved with actor Adam Shulman, and the two recently rented a relatively modest apartment in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass - for the uninitiated) section of Brooklyn. nine0007

The 1,414 square foot apartment is priced at $6,400 per month and has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. They offer great views of the surrounding area. The apartment, which is in a restored pre-war building known as "The Clocktower," features 12-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, an open-plan kitchen, dressing rooms, an office, and a laundry room. The Clocktower building features a 24-hour concierge, a gym and a rooftop rooftop. The whole building looks like the perfect place for a bunch of stockbrokers, unlike an Oscar-nominated artist, but it feels like Ms. Hathaway is doing her best to stay more pragmatic in all aspects of her life. nine0007
