Living Room Wallpaper - 31 Living Room Wallpaper Ideas

One of the simplest ways to change up your living room is with wallpaper, whether you want a calming vibe using soft neutrals or a real hit of colour and pattern, and there are so many designs to choose from.

When it comes to living room wallpaper, murals are so popular right now and really express your personality – you can even design your own. Wallpaper can also be used to highlight a particular architectural feature such as a chimney breast or alcoves – and think about the fifth wall aka the ceiling, to really make an impact.

'When choosing wallpaper, consider the size of a room. Smaller scale patterns work well in big rooms, but can overwhelm smaller spaces,' explains David Harris, Design Director at Andrew Martin. 'Larger scale patterns work well in most rooms but think about lighting, as this can affect the look of wallpaper and make a colour appear lighter or darker.'

To make larger living rooms appear more intimate, opt for darker, more dramatic tones such as purple or navy, or for a compact lounge, lighter hues such as grey will create the illusion of space.

Importantly, think about the style of your home too, as this will affect your living room wallpaper design. 'Traditional patterns often suit period homes better, whilst kitsch patterns can add a sense of fun,' explains David Harris. 'Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns. Mix classic designs such as stripes or florals with exotic styles such as ikats and kilims. Avoid making the space look too busy by choosing patterns in colours that complement each other.'

So on that note, get some inspiration for the main room in your home with these living room wallpaper ideas.

Wallpaper for the hall (50 photos), which wallpaper to choose for the living room - Interior ideas

Wallpaper is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to update your living room interior. Thanks to a wide variety of shades, patterns and textures, they can be used to transform a room, visually expand it, as well as make it cozy and stylish. In order not to get lost among the huge assortment presented in hardware stores, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the types of wallpaper, find out the pros and cons of each material, read the recommendations and see photos of the best examples of living room design using them. nine0005

Types of wallpaper for the hall, their advantages and disadvantages

Paper wallpaper

This is the most affordable type of wallpaper. Due to their low cost, they can be used for finishing rented apartments, dormitories, or simply replaced every two to three years with new ones. Depending on the type of paper used, there are matte and glossy products.

Thin one-layer wallpapers are also called simplex, and two-layer wallpapers, consisting of a dense substrate and a decorative front side, are called duplex. The latter are more resistant to getting wet, so they do not tear during gluing and better hide the unevenness of the walls. nine0005

The advantages of paper wallpapers are low price, environmental friendliness (they pass air and microparticles of water vapor well), a large selection of patterns and colors. Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting fragility, susceptibility to mechanical damage, fading in the sun, and also the fact that, while collecting dust, they are not amenable to wet cleaning.

Walls must be perfectly level for wallpapering.

Vinyl wallpaper

Such wallpapers are made by applying artificial material - polyvinyl chloride - to a paper or fabric base. It can be smooth, hard, foamed or embossed (silkscreen). The resistance of PVC to moisture makes this material an optimal base for painting, and its low weight and mechanical strength make it easy to attach it to walls. The high price is justified by a long service life - from 10 to 20 years, and in addition - the ability to repaint (up to 5 times). nine0005

Vinyl wallcoverings are resistant to moisture, sufficiently elastic and durable, able to hide minor wall irregularities. Volumetric drawings and beautiful texture make them a very aesthetic type of finish. The disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper include the unpleasant smell of plastic (which should disappear over time) and the fact that they do not let air and steam through the walls, do not allow them to "breathe".

Textile wallpaper

The use of fabrics for wall decoration in the hall is not cheap, but their delightful appearance is worth it. Linen, satin, silk, velvet, with an amazing patterned weave - they make the interior truly luxurious. nine0005

Fabric wallpapers require very careful care - they should be covered from UV radiation and moisture, carefully cleaned. The environmental friendliness of such a finish depends on the material chosen, but in general, textiles pass air well.

Glass fiber

They are produced by weaving from the finest glass threads. The result is a very durable translucent canvas with a relief pattern. Such wallpapers are firmly fixed with starch paste on top of the plaster and can be re-painted. nine0005

The advantages of glass wallcoverings include environmental friendliness (they contain only natural materials such as quartz sand, limestone, soda, clay), fire safety (glass fiber melting point +600°C), durability (up to 30 years of operation).

The disadvantages are - a relatively large weight and poor choice of textures.

Liquid wallpaper

They can also be attributed to decorative plasters, because liquid wallpaper is, in fact, an acrylic solution with the addition of natural fibers (cellulose, sawdust, cotton, silk) and pigment. nine0005

This type of finish allows you to hide the original irregularities, create an interesting texture, paint the walls with a color gradient. Liquid wallpaper is easy to apply and remove, has a beautiful relief, evens out the surface of the walls. Glitter, small pebbles can be added to the composition of the mixture.

The disadvantages of finishing with liquid wallpaper include low moisture resistance.

It's all about style!

A huge number of varieties of wallpaper allows you to find the perfect solution for any style of interior. Read on for tips on some of them! nine0005

Contemporary living room wallpaper

Art Nouveau suggests a discreet design in monochrome colors. For a living room in this style, plain or wallpaper with a soft graphic pattern (diamonds, circles, lines, abstractions), imitation of polished marble, metal are suitable. An interesting addition that creates a visual perspective can be photo wallpapers.

Classic living room wallpaper

Light wallpapers with golden or silver floral ornaments, repeating the texture of expensive fabrics (satin, brocade, velvet), natural sandstone, mahogany, soft leather, will harmoniously look in the classic interior of the hall. nine0005

Wallpaper for the living room in Provence style

For a living room design in the Provence style, it is better to choose matte pastel wallpaper with a small floral print. You can not glue them with a solid canvas, but frame them with plain inserts that repeat the color of the patterns.

Nordic living room wallpaper

The main motif of the Scandinavian style - snow-covered rocks and transparent blue fjords - should be reflected in the decoration of the walls. Wallpaper can be white, light blue, gray, with abstract patterns. nine0005

Photo wallpapers depicting a winter mountain landscape or a waterfall will also help visually expand the living room.

Country living room wallpaper

This style is characterized primarily by natural materials. Imitation of masonry, wooden boards or logs, hay, straw are the basic options for country music.

Wallpaper with floral patterns, plaid, pets, birds, butterflies, pastoral scenes will help create a relaxed rustic atmosphere. Photo inserts should also remind you of life outside the city: a lot of sun, sky, green trees, endless fields and horses. nine0005

Colors

White wallpaper

White wallpaper in the hall is an elegant, unobtrusive backdrop for brighter decor and furniture. They are always appropriate, visually expand the space and give it a soft glow.

Gray wallpaper

A neutral palette ranging from silver to graphite, perfect for both monochromatic designs and toned down bright accents. Living room in gray will always look modern and sophisticated.

nine0008 Wallpaper in pastel colors

Soft, sun-bleached, bleached colors create a very soothing atmosphere. Light blue, lilac, sand, beige, pink, greenish - they all blend perfectly with each other.

Living room with such wallpaper will visually appear more spacious.

Brown wallpaper

Shades of brown are ideal for a cozy home environment. The color of coffee and chocolate is in perfect harmony with the soft glow of yellow, the festive purity of white, the spring vivacity of green, and the heavenly elevation of turquoise. nine0005

Yellow wallpaper

In yellow tones, it makes sense to decorate the walls of the hall, the windows of which face the northwest side. Banana, lemon, orange wallpapers will fill the living room with warmth and light, and give the inhabitants a good mood.

Living room wallpaper combination

So that the living room does not get bored with monotony, it is worth using different elements for wall decoration. A successful combination of plain and patterned wallpapers will help to beautifully zone the space, increase the height of the ceilings, expand or narrow certain areas, highlight dark corners. nine0005

Using this technique, you should be guided by the shade combination table. The most harmonious look is a uniform base and patterns repeating in color on a lighter background. Glitter prints reflect light and grab attention; lines visually stretch the room; large elements fill the void of too large halls.

The wallpaper in the hall can also be combined with paint, decorative plaster, ceramic tiles, brick or stone masonry, wood veneer, cork and plastic panels. Carved wooden frames, stucco molding (or its imitation from polyurethane), plasterboard niches will help to highlight the most interesting areas. nine0005

Wallpaper for a small living room / hall in Khrushchev

The main task of designing a small living room in Khrushchev is to make the room seem more spacious. To do this, the wallpaper should be light, plain, with a small, neat pattern and vertical accents. You can add depth with the help of photo inserts and optical 3D effects.

If the wallpaper contains reflective elements (sequins, silk patterns, fluorescent coatings), it is necessary to provide good lighting - and they will give the room an extra shine. nine0005

It is better to refuse large images, three-dimensional relief and bright contrasts on the walls in a small room.

In our photo selection you can see how different wallpaper for the hall looks in the interior. Visual examples of the best design solutions will help you quickly make a choice and equip even the smallest living room with exquisite taste.

Video: Wallpaper in the interior of the living room

60 photos in the interior, combination, color and types of wallpaper

When choosing wallpaper for the living room, you must first consider what kind of room you plan to decorate. Lighting conditions, the size and shape of the room play a decisive role, because the color, saturation of tone and the pattern of the wall covering can significantly change the perception of the interior.

Living room: types of wallpaper

The history of this type of decoration began in China, around the third millennium BC - they began to stick rice paper on the walls. Modern wallpaper for the living room can be either traditional, based on paper, or washable, based on other materials. According to the base material, they are divided into:

  • Paper;
  • Vinyl;
  • Acrylic;
  • Glass fiber;
  • Metalized; nine0142
  • Liquid;
  • Natural (textile, bamboo, leather and others).

Each type of wallpaper has its own advantages and disadvantages. Let's consider them in more detail.

Paper

Classic living room wallpapers are made on paper. They are not moisture resistant - but in the living room, as a rule, this is not required. Caring for such a coating is simple - from time to time they need to be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. A variety of colors and patterns allows you to choose the right design for any interior, whether classic or modern style. Paper can have a different texture, color, be smooth, structural or embossed. nine0005

Vinyl

Polymer fibers create interesting designs. Non-woven vinyl coatings have a leveling effect and work as an additional heat and sound insulating layer. The design of wallpaper for the living room with silk-screen printing is suitable for classic styles. The silk-threaded vinyl used for the top layer allows for impressive modern wallpaper designs for living rooms.

Acrylic

Toboi have a paper base, on which a polymer is applied by a dot method. This gives them a certain advantage over vinyl, as it facilitates air exchange. However, they are less resistant to water and their service life is much shorter. The paper base is not able to mask the defects of the wall, and the design possibilities are very limited, so this type of coating is not widely used.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass wallpaper for the living room walls has its advantages: they are very durable and strong, breathe well, they can be washed. However, the disadvantages are also obvious: there is only one finishing option - painting, and you can repaint a limited number of times, since the paint gradually hides the relief, worsening the decorative properties. The high cost and complexity of dismantling also do not contribute to the popularity of this coating. nine0005

Metallized wallpaper

Able to highlight high-tech or techno designs. Some options are suitable for classic styles. The basis is interlining, on which aluminum foil is applied in a thin layer on top. An embossing or drawing is applied to the foil, usually under the metal: gold, silver, platinum, bronze. The foil has heat-insulating properties, is resistant to moisture, does not fade, does not wear out for a long time.

Liquid wallpaper

The composition of this finishing material includes cellulose as a base, silk fibers, dyes, decorative components (mica, mother-of-pearl, various minerals in crumbs, sparkles, gold and silver threads), as well as substances that protect against mold, decay and binders. In appearance, they resemble plaster, are supplied dry and are diluted with water before use.

Natural

Wallpaper can be made of fabric, bamboo or jute fibers, leather sheets. Natural fiber coatings applied to interlining are also called natural. Real dry plants can be woven into these coverings. The original interior design is not the only advantage of this coating. Natural wallpapers have heat-insulating properties, do not fade, and are environmentally friendly. nine0005

Wallpaper color for the living room

Using the color of wall coverings and its saturation, you can create various interior effects - for example, highlight functional areas, “raise” low ceilings, “push apart” walls, “brighten” the room, or, on the contrary, create an intimate atmosphere . In interior design, this technique is widely used.

Light wallpapers in the living room

They will give it splendor, add light, especially in cases where the windows face the north side. Gradual, gradient darkening from top to bottom will create the illusion of high ceilings. The traditional design of living rooms is the decoration of the lower part of the walls, which gets dirty faster, in dark, and the upper part in light tones. nine0005

Dark wallpaper in the living room

is more often used to highlight one or another part of the wall - for example, in the fireplace area. The color scheme is selected in accordance with the chosen style of the room and the personal tastes of the customer, while there are several general rules that must be followed to create a comfortable interior:

  • Too bright and “acidic” tones should be avoided, especially in large areas; nine0142
  • In rooms with a lack of natural light, do not paste over the walls with wallpaper in dark, saturated colors;
  • In small living rooms, it is better to use one tone for the walls, and it should be light.

Combination of wallpaper in the living room

The room reserved for the living room may have an irregular shape, or too low ceilings. A very large room is also not always good: a person will not feel very comfortable in it. These and some other shortcomings can be corrected by combining wall coverings of different colors, patterns and textures. nine0005

Geometry

By highlighting one of the walls with photo wallpaper or wallpaper of a contrasting tone, you can partially correct the geometry of the space. Using the combined wallpaper in the living room in the vertical direction, they visually “raise” the ceilings, in the horizontal direction they “expand” the walls.

Zoning

Various combinations of wallpaper colors in the living room are used to divide the space into functional areas - a fireplace area, a reading area, a TV viewing area and others. The same technique helps to highlight the living room in open layouts. nine0005

Decorative wallpaper

Both colors in the living room can be used to create an original wall decor with patterned or patterned wallpaper. For example, all walls are light, and several sections are dark with a pattern, they can be framed using a wooden, metal or plastic plank.
