Unique Pool Landscaping Ideas – Forbes Home

There is nothing wrong with keeping your pool landscaping simple. But if you want a true oasis, turn to pool landscaping ideas that will help take your backyard to the next level. For truly gorgeous pool landscaping, dream bigger than a concrete walkway around the water. Instead imagine aromatic flowers, upgraded pavers, inviting seating areas and great lighting that will allow you to enjoy this close-to-home escape well into the night.

After all, “landscaping” doesn’t just describe greenery and rocks. For complete pool landscaping, aim to blend a combination of hardscaping and softscaping elements. By incorporating natural components, your pool will feel more like a true paradise than a concrete water pit.

1. Surround One Side of the Pool With Jungle-Inspired Plants

Getty

By incorporating lush plants around the perimeter of your pool, you’ll create a space that has you questioning if you’re in your backyard or on a tropical vacation. Finding the best varieties to plant will depend on your actual climate, but even pool owners in areas of the country that require hardier plants can get the same aesthetic with ferns, hostas and hibiscus. Some palms can even tolerate sub-zero temperatures.

2. Build a Rock Wall Along a Portion of the Pool

Getty

You can really enhance your pool’s landscaping by adding some elevated boulders around its edge. For the most custom look, rock can be incorporated directly into the design of the pool during construction. But even if you are retrofitting your landscaping to an existing pool, you can tap into this idea with both real or artificial boulders—including some that offer built-in speakers.

3. Add Built-In Planters for a Resort-Like Effect

Getty

Give you softscaping a focal point with eye-catching planters that are built directly into your landscaping. Great for showcasing blooming flowers, shrubs or even trees, built-in planters add an instant wow factor to your pool landscaping.

4. Create a Shaded Lounging Space

Getty

You’ll have it made in the shade with a poolside cabana space. The easiest and most inexpensive option is to add a sail shade and some lounging chairs. Or build a complete open-air pool house for an experience that tops many 5-star resorts.

5. Expand the Pool Decking Space with Xeriscaping

Getty

With pool landscaping, one of the biggest expenses is also one of the most essential expenses: Building or renovating a pool deck using stamped pavers costs an average of $7,000. By adding xeriscaping elements around a more narrow pool deck, you may be able to minimize costs while maximizing the Palm Springs-like vibe.

6. Space Out Concrete Pavers With Grass in Between

Getty

Sink your toes into some lush grass while adding some visual intrigue around your pool by adding a few inches of turf between concrete pavers around your pool. A look that is simultaneously modern and classic, this is a great pool landscaping idea to consider if you are redoing your pool decking.

7. Add a Raised Wooden Deck

Getty

Mixing materials for the pool decking space is a perfect way to add some interesting design elements to your pool landscaping. Adding a slightly elevated floating wood deck next to the pool is a good way to give the illusion of additional space. Add a patio table for the perfect poolside dining space.

8. Build a Waterfall Feature for a Tropical Escape

Getty

Adding a waterfall feature is a guaranteed way to make your pool landscaping feel more glamorous—and the project may not be as expensive as you would assume. On average, homeowners around the country can expect to pay $1,500 for a 12-foot, professionally installed rock waterfall.

9. Plant Flowers with Your Senses in Mind

Getty

Spending some time around the pool can be a complete sensory experience if you add aromatic blooms to the pool landscape design. With a microclimate of its own, you’ll want to do some research before planting new flowers or shrubs around your pool. However, some relatively safe bets for most climates include lavender and geraniums. Or grow your favorite flowers in pots to help extend the season.

10. Lounge into the Evening with a Built-In Firepit

If the pool is the go-to social gathering space for your house, create a more inviting evening hangout with a built-in firepit added to the poolside landscaping. It costs an average of $300 to $1,400 to have a propane-burning fire pit professionally installed, but can create some priceless entertaining experiences.

11.  Mix Up Some Drinks at a Poolside Bar

Getty

If you are building a pool, a swim-up bar can be included in the design. Or, if you are adding to your existing pool landscaping, consider building a freestanding combo bar and grilling space for the best dinner parties. And once you have the bar installed, all you need to find is someone willing to make the drinks.

12. Build Seating into the Hardscaping

Getty

Give people a seat at your next pool party with built-in benches around the pool decking or in the backyard area. An easy addition to any space where you need a retaining wall, the seating can make the whole pool landscaping feel more inviting, especially if you add some outdoor pillows or cushions.

13. Light It Up With Professionally Installed Lighting

Getty

A worthy upgrade to string lights or tiki torches, professionally installed lighting around your pool space will add some functional luxury to the landscaping. Whether you are building any poolside structures or simply need to add lighting, custom lighting can set your landscaping apart.

14. Go Minimalist for a Modern Aesthetic

Getty

With clean lines, a narrow pool deck and manicured turf, your pool landscaping can shine—without feeling fussy. This keeps the focus on the pool and lounging without requiring too much additional landscaping maintenance.

15. Upgrade the Pool Fencing

Getty

Even though pool fencing is first and foremost a matter of safety, that doesn’t mean it can’t also look great. Consider your overall landscaping style while selecting the best fencing for your pool space so that you can add to the aesthetic rather than distract from it.

Pool landscaping ideas: The best materials to use in and around a backyard pool

Good pool landscaping ideas need careful thought, planning and preparation.

But worry not. We break down all you need to know about the different types of pool landscaping, from pool landscaping with rocks to pool ideas for privacy and shade.

The materials used – from paving, aggregates and decking, to decorative edging and the hard materials employed for in-ground pools – add texture and character to a backyard pool garden, marking out the structure and leading the eye through to the swimming pool and beyond.

The best time to undertake a pool landscape redesign is in winter, when the backyard is dormant. But the summer months are the time to analyze the ways in which you use the space and to understand what you need from your future design.

These backyard ideas will help you find the best ways to landscape around a pool and explain what you need to consider before you begin.

Pool landscaping ideas

From putting greens to privacy, these landscaping ideas add major value (and fun) to your pool area.

1. Plant on an island

(Image credit: Brittany Farinas, House of One / Lifestyle Production Group)

Your pool landscaping ideas don't have to be relegated to the sides of the pool. For an original idea that evokes a tropical resort, bring the vegetation into the pool by stationing it on an island structure right in the middle of water, like at this Florida home by Brittany Farinas of House of One Interiors . Want to go full paradise vibes? Use palms.

2. Use lighting to enhance the landscape

(Image credit: Designer: The Fox Group Photographer: Lindsay Salazar)

Lighting is the perfect complement to pool landscaping. It can emphasize certain features (try uplighting shrubs and trees) and enhance the overall ambience of a newly landscaped space.

String lights are a pool lighting idea that's more about form than function, but the ambience a set of bistro lights will add to your pool area is second to none.

If you're lucky enough to have a pool house, use it as an anchor point for your string lights, and stretch them above the length of the pool, like The Fox Group did, above. No pool house? Try filling the bottom of whisky barrel planters with cement, then inserting a wooden post to create a semi-permanent anchor point for lights. Don't forget to finish off the planters with soil and your favorite annuals.

3. Use planters to add personal style

(Image credit: Thomas Guy Interiors / Haylei Smith)

Both your planters and the plants you put in them are a chance to add your personal style to your pool patio ideas.

'We like to include banana leaf trees and orchids to add a touch of nature, and high-design planters can be a creative way to show off one’s own personal style,' says Lance Thomas of Louisiana-based Thomas Guy Interiors . Above, Thomas chose organic planters and unstructured ferns to complement the contemporary, minimalist pool design.

4. Include a putting green

Your pool landscaping ideas can offer more than just beauty and a bit of shade. Add recreation to the list by installing a putting green adjacent to your pool patio, like interior designer Breegan Jane did at her client's Southern California home, where the goal of the outdoor space was to 'surprise and delight. '

5.  Use landscaping for privacy

(Image credit: Brittany Farinas, House of One Interiors / Lifestyle Production Group)

Looking for a pool fence idea that adds privacy and beauty? Your landscaping can do the job if you plant high trees or bushy shrubs around the perimeter of your pool or property, a la this Florida property.

Another idea we love from this photo? The cabana. When you're brainstorming your landscaping and pool area ideas, don't forget to include a shady spot to retreat to when you're tired of sunbathing.

6. Invest in LED lighting around a pool

(Image credit: Future / Mark Bolton )

When considering pool landscaping, smart pool lighting ideas certainly have their part to play. A well-planned lighting scheme can do wonders for your backyard pool and shouldn't be an afterthought.

'For small cascades and fountains, direct underwater spotlights onto the plinth of flowing water, or run a color-changing LED strip along the rill from which the water emerges,' suggests Sally Storey, lighting director at John Cullen.

An impressive backyard pool is hugely enhanced when illuminated at night. Underwater lights can be halogen, LED or fiber optic, but they must be encased in waterproof, IP-rated fixtures.

Alternatively, solar garden lighting ideas, such as bulbs hidden in between evergreens or in containers create a soft glow.

7. Pick the perfect pool deck landscaping

(Image credit: Future / Mark Bolton Photography)

Poolside deck ideas provide versatile and cost-effective ways to extend your living area into the outdoors. What's more, decking creates the perfect focal point for a low-maintenance yard, and is cheaper and easier to use than paving.

At its best, a sturdy, water-resistant timber deck is a handsome, hard-wearing pool area idea that complements most backyard pool settings.

But decks don’t only look good: other advantages include being relatively lightweight in comparison to stone, quick and easy to install and forgiving. Plus, timber can be cut to size to fit perfectly round awkward corners – perfect if you don't have a rectangular pool.

8. Add shade and privacy with ivy

(Image credit: Future / Armelle Habib)

In an ideal world our pool areas would be private sanctuaries where we could swim, entertain and relax away from prying eyes.

Yet, for many pool owners, the reality is quite different. Spending time outdoors can be like living in a goldfish bowl because there is nothing to screen their backyard pool from neighboring windows.

Smart garden shade ideas are great if you want to shield your pool area from the neighborhood and create shady coverage at the same time. A good place to start is with your pool fence or property boundary.

If you have an existing fence or trellis, plant ivy near the base to create a living privacy wall. No fence? Plant a deciduous hedge, or trail ivy up a wall using a trellis.

9. Landscape with rocks, trees and overgrown grasses

(Image credit: Future / © Roy Westwood)

If you are not one for a traditional pool area, then consider a more natural landscape for your outdoor swim.

Today’s natural pools – or swimming ponds as they are often known – are welcomed into the border garden, whether in a formal setting of lawns, surrounded by flowers and grasses, or even made to look like a natural garden pond.

For a rugged appearance, take inspiration from creative rock garden ideas and lay down plenty of misshapen rocks, pebbles and limestone. The main highlight of a rock garden is the quiet, zen-like aesthetic they add to your backyard.

10. Highlight a rectangular pool with flower beds and borders

(Image credit: Future / Alistair Nicholls)

Whether you like raised garden bed ideas or you prefer planting straight into the ground, flower beds can make exceptional dividers for a garden path around a backyard pool.

This is especially the case when you bring tall, architectural plants into the mix. This smart garden path idea is a beautiful way to establish the boundary of a walkway and to zone off your pool area from the rest of the garden.

What's more, it will continue to offer color and structure throughout the seasons, even when the pool is not in use.

11. Set up a seating area around the pool

(Image credit: Future / Mark Bolton)

When considering pool patio ideas and other hard landscaping materials for a pool, your first priority will be to establish the functional spaces, from terraces and patios, to paths and borders around the swimming pool.

The expanse of an area and its use will dictate which materials are most suitable.

For instance, a hard standing for a table and chairs needs to be flat and stable, and you might want to keep granular aggregates, such as gravel or bark, away from the pool so they are not carried into the water.

12. Install a non-slip surface

(Image credit: Future / Polly Eltes)

While a pebble-dashed floor isn't entirely non-slip, it is certainly a less slippery option in comparison to stone slabs, pavers and decking.

Opt for an entirely smooth surface to avoid any nasty cuts on the feet and if your pool is indoors, be sure to include a professional drainage system.

Proper drainage will ensure that the water in your in-ground pool remains clean and protects your surrounding yard, deck, patio, landscaping, and home from possible water damage, erosion, and debris.

Plus, no one wants to be constantly mopping up water.

13. Landscape around a pool with grass

(Image credit: Kimberley Harrison / Kathryn MacDonald)

Your lawn serves as a huge source of air conditioning for your garden and also releases oxygen and simultaneously captures dust, keeping you and your family healthy, so it's a perfect option for near a pool area.

To reap the many benefits to the full, keep your lawn as healthy as possible and your lawn pays you back for all the work you put into it.

What’s more, your lawn needs plenty of water to encourage the roots to grow deep into the ground, and the best way to achieve this is to water deep. Try to water heavily, on an infrequent basis.

Plus, you’ll want to make sure the chlorine from the pool doesn’t sit on top for too long.

14. Use concrete as a modern alternative to stone slabs

(Image credit: Future / Matthew Williams)

Lusting after a modern industrial landscape? Durable, easy to clean and heat-retaining, there’s a lot to love about concrete flooring in a modern backyard.

Perfect for nailing the urban trend, it works best in contemporary spaces, but can also be mixed with plenty of greenery and colored foliage for a striking contrast.

While the use of concrete has become commonplace, it was once seen as an inferior material in comparison to stone. But if we can forget about it as a cheap substitute we discover that it has its own intrinsic qualities, as interesting as natural materials and very much more versatile.

Concrete is quite simply a blend of aggregates – sand and gravel or crushed stone – bonded together in a dense, stone-like mass by hardened cement.

This material has made possible incredible structures and surfaces. It is the cement that gives concrete its dull-gray appearance, and so the secret with in-situ garden paving is to remove the cement from the surface before it sets.

15. Mix materials around a pool

Large patio pavers have been gaining popularity in California in recent years, and it is easy to see why.

If you're wondering how to make your garden feel more modern without embarking on an overly expensive redesign, then you should seriously consider employing oversized patio pavers for the landscaping around your pool.

As far as backyard landscaping ideas go, large pavers are the opposite of discreet and that's exactly why we're seeing more of them in outdoor paving designs.

Bold and immediately noticeable, oversized paving slabs create an instant indoor-outdoor effect, because they emit the luxury look of indoor tiles – just outdoors.

What is best to put around a pool?

(Image credit: Future / Jody Stewart)

Paving slabs are one of the most common garden materials for landscaping around a pool. Paving or pavers are readily available as individual blocks, in a wide range of shapes, colors and sizes that can be laid in several pattern configurations. You can also buy specialist kits, such as circles, for patios.

Mostly made from pre-cast concrete or reconstituted stone, pavers can also be used for garden paths, terraces, steps and patios. They are also ideal for adding a large expanse in the same color/material. A matching path and patio area can be used to lead the eye through the garden or to an adjacent pool house.

What's more, pavers are mostly affordable, readily available and fairly straightforward to lay. Small pavers can be teased into curves, tight corners and organic shapes, and there are a good selection of edgings and borders available to complete the look.

Be aware that large pavers will need cutting. Tailor your design to limit the number of cuts at planning stage, and hire a slab and walling block splitter to ensure a neat job.

90,000 pool on the suburban house

Content

9000

Parks were acquired in suburban sites, therefore no one is surprised now. He is even at the dachas. But before installing the pool on the site, it is worth considering its location and design in advance so that this object looks organic. Only a well-made pool will perform on the site, in addition to a relaxing function, also decorative. In this article, we will consider design options for plots with a pool. nine0003

Types of swimming pools

At the moment it is possible to install a swimming pool on any plot of land. To do this, there are many options, among which stand out:

If summer residents mainly choose inflatable or prefabricated models that are easy to store in winter, then the owners of suburban areas decorate their possessions with stationary models. Such pools are more functional, but require a lot of additional equipment for normal functioning. nine0003

The stationary version of the pool can be made in any convenient place and have an unusual or classic shape. Such reservoirs serve for bathing for a long time, which is usually at least 10 years.

Production of a stationary pool at the site is carried out in two ways. This can be the installation of a polypropylene bowl in a prepared pit and the installation of thermal insulation or the concreting of the surface of the bottom and walls of the bowl and covering them with tiles.

But a stationary pool, as in the photo, has some drawbacks that can stop the owner of a country house. These are, for example, the duration and complexity of the installation work and the high cost of the entire structure, as well as the need for maintenance. nine0003

As an alternative, a prefabricated pool can be installed on the site, which is installed on the ground or dug into the pit. According to landscape designers, the second option is preferable, since in this case the appearance of the site does not deteriorate.

The shape of this tank can be round, rectangular, oval or square. In terms of operating time, such models are not inferior to stationary ones.

Location features

If the owner has a free area, then it's a sin not to arrange a modern swimming pool on it. If you create the landscape design of the site correctly, then the design will be able to convey the excellent taste of the owner.

Usually, the owners of a site with a sauna plan to place a pool next to it so that after the steam room they can refresh themselves, but this approach is not always correct. There are some rules when placing such an object on the site.

First of all, it should be noted that the pool is best located in the open space of the site, without shrubs, trees and other lush vegetation. From the side of decorativeness, of course, it would be good to place a pond surrounded by plants, but from the point of view of functionality and practicality, this is a gross mistake. In any case, leaves or needles will fly around from the trees, which will fall into the pool, and this greatly pollutes the water. As a result, the reservoir will have to be cleaned more often, which will increase maintenance costs. Also, in a shaded area of the site, the water will not be able to heat up to the optimum temperature. If you want to ennoble the pool a little, then you can plant low shrubs near it in a small amount. nine0003

The area for the pool must be flat, without relief. It is best to arrange it on a small hill so that you can admire the view of the surrounding landscape. If the surface has a slight slope, then this will be beneficial in organizing the drainage of water.

It is important to take into account the level of groundwater on the site, since stationary pools with a bowl are installed only where groundwater is deep, as they will not spoil the bowl. nine0003

Important! The size of the pool is selected in accordance with the area of the site.

Be sure to take into account the climatic features of the area where the site is located. Where there is a short summer and rainy autumn, an open structure will be useless, since it will not be possible to use such a pool for most of the year. In this case, either make a heated indoor structure or use inflatable models in the summer.

Now there are products that improve water filtration, so it is not necessary to install a complete system. In this case, the shape and location of the pool can be any. nine0003

Experts advise making ponds on a plot of regular shape. If the depth is large, then you can not do without a ladder. And the last point is the need to connect communications, and this is most convenient to do in the immediate vicinity of the house.

If there is not enough space on the site for the location of a rectangular pool, then a structure of arbitrary shape can be made, depending on the characteristics of the allocated area.

Sometimes extravagant versions of pools are made, which occupy almost the entire site. This option is shown in the photo below. In the middle of the water there are pavilions, to which bizarre bridges lead. Such designs are quite expensive during installation and maintenance, but they look amazing on a summer cottage or a suburban area.

In cases where the house is located on a hill, it is possible to create an infinity pool in the landscape. Such a design, in addition to a stunning opening view, also has practical significance - natural water filtration. nine0003

Creating a pool on the site

Before creating this water feature on the site, it is necessary to determine whether it will be decorative or swimming. For decorative ones, as a rule, the depth is small, and for swimming ones, it ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 meters.

Tip! In the presence of small children, the pool is divided into 2 zones with different depths.

After determining the location and dimensions, proceed to the preparation of the pit on the site. Its depth is made greater than that which will be by the pool. This is necessary so that you can equip a sand-gravel pillow. It is carried out at the bottom with a thickness of 20 cm and compacted. nine0003

After that, a metal mesh is laid out on the bottom and poured with concrete. After the solution has completely dried, geotextiles and polystyrene foam plates are laid out on the slab. From above waterproofing is made with a polyethylene film.

Sewerage, plumbing, filter and water heater are connected to the prepared excavation. If the project provides for lighting, then electricity is additionally provided.

Using a crane, a bowl is installed in the pit and connected to all communications. The space remaining between the walls of the pit and the bowl is filled with concrete. nine0003

Important! Concrete must be poured gradually and simultaneously with water into the pool so that the bowl does not deform in the future.

After the top layer of concrete has dried, all joints are sealed with sand.

The last stage is the decoration of the pool, which we will dwell on in more detail.

Decoration of the pool

You can decorate the pond in the landscape of the site as your fantasy requires. A common option is to create a flooring around the pool from a decking board. This area will be a great place to relax, where you can place garden furniture, sun loungers or arrange a gazebo. Moreover, such a flooring can be raised above the pool, and a wide wooden staircase can be led into the reservoir, on the steps of which it is convenient to relax. nine0003

Important! Wood to create a coating must be treated to be moisture resistant.

Concrete or tile is an alternative to wood landscaping. What exactly to choose depends on the overall landscape design of the summer cottage and the house, as well as on the desires and capabilities of the owners.

If natural stone is used in the decoration, this guarantees long-term operation, without constant repairs and problems with the possibility of mechanical damage. If the walls of the house are made in a light version, then you can play in contrast and arrange a terrace by the pool in dark shades, and put sunbeds on top to match the wall decoration. There is also an option to maintain the unity of the color design of the landscape and choose tiles of the same color as the house has. nine0003

If, in addition to the design of the flooring, you want to make a plant frame on the area around the pool, then you should choose plants for the implementation of such a plan. For an exact idea of where and what to place, you can use a special computer program or draw a sketch on paper.

The choice of plants for the area around the pool should be taken seriously. Of course, everyone would like to feel on their site, like on an exotic beach under a palm tree, but it will hardly be possible to grow it in the middle lane of our country. nine0003

Ornamental flowering shrubs are the perfect addition to the pool. They are able to attract birds and butterflies, which will set the right atmosphere. The very territory around in this case is planted with a lawn. On it you can lay out paved paths to the house or other buildings on the site, as in the photo.

It is convenient to grow not deciduous, but coniferous plants near the pool, which do not shed their leaves in autumn. They do not require special care and look great in the landscape at any time of the year. From such plants, you can create certain compositions that will undoubtedly decorate the site. nine0003

Landscape pools

Now the direction is gaining popularity, which makes the pool on the site not an artificial reservoir, but an object that is as close as possible to natural nature. Such pools are created with a combination of aesthetics and proportions. When creating it, a variety of decor is used, which helps to fit the reservoir into the landscape of the site.

If an ordinary pool is a body of water with a laid out area around it, then a landscape one resembles a natural one as much as possible. Pebbles are used for its decoration, and plants are planted along the banks. nine0003

Landscaping of a plot with a swimming pool is designed at the following levels:

  1. Availability of space for recreation and swimming. Here, tiles and lighting perform such functions as to appear natural.
  2. The presence of a decorative zone along the edges of the pool. To create the usual natural look of the lake, boulders are installed along the banks of the pool on the site of a country house, pebbles are poured, and plants are planted. This zone can be expanded by the presence of rockeries and flower beds on the site. It is not forbidden to perform artificial waterfalls. nine0164
  3. Regeneration zone, which can be excluded. But the naturalness of the design depends on its presence. It belongs to the pool and is done at a shallow depth. Pebbles are poured at the bottom and moisture-loving plants are planted directly into the water.
  4. The recreation area is mandatory and is an area with sun loungers, furniture or even a barbecue.

Thinking through the design of a site with a swimming pool, you should understand that the reservoir will become the center that will allow you to create the most comfortable and modern recreation area. nine0003

The design of the pool is carried out in accordance with the general features of the site. The most popular design trends are oriental, that is, Japanese or Chinese styles.

Particular attention is paid to the backlight. It can be minimal and consist of several lamps, or it can frame the entire composition, creating a certain mood throughout the site.

Tip! It is best to perform the backlight, which can be adjusted to your desires. nine0003

Conclusion

Creating a swimming pool on a country plot is a complex task. But, if you think over everything correctly and create a project, it is possible to make a unique design that will be the center of attention of all guests. The photos and tips given in the article will be very useful when designing a pool on the site.

Summer cottage landscape design with a pool: projects with photos

Water bodies in summer cottages have become so popular that a pool in landscape design is no longer something exclusive . If the pool is designed and decorated correctly, it can perform several functions at once. On the one hand, it serves as a place to relax, on the other, it decorates the site. nine0003

You can build a swimming pool in almost any area. This is not so difficult to do if you take the finished bowl as a basis.
