Need to know

With its hefty price tag of more than $2000, adding a Thermomix to your kitchen collection is a significant investment. Now that there are plenty of competitor all-in-one machines also available at a range of prices, it's important to weigh up all your options before you buy.

Is a genuine Thermomix really worth splashing the cash on? Are you going to use it every day and really get your money's worth, or is it another of those appliances that is going to sit neglected at the back of your cupboard gathering dust?

IMPORTANT UPDATE: 31 August 2022 Thermomix manufacturer Vorwerk has issued a safety notice about the TM5 and TM6 machines, due to the TM6 cup potentially allowing dangerously hot food to spill under certain circumstances.

The TM5 Thermomix has now been superseded by the latest model, the TM6.

What is an all-in-one kitchen machine?

All-in-one machines, such as Thermomix, combine multiple features such as slow-cooking, food processing, steaming and mixing, letting you make thousands of different recipes from homemade bread and curries to pasta sauces, stock pastes, yoghurt, ice cream and nut butters.

"All-in-one appliances combine several appliances into one, which can free up precious cupboard and bench space," says CHOICE home economist Fiona Mair.

In fact, the latest Thermomix model has a compact design that takes up only slightly more surface area than an A4-sized sheet.

"This style of appliance is great for people who are just starting out setting up their kitchen or for keen cooks who want to get rid of multiple appliances in favour of just one," says Fiona.

Our CHOICE home experts have tested the latest Thermomix model, the TM6, in the CHOICE kitchen labs as part of our review of all-in-one machines.

The machines we tested range from budget brands such as the Kogan all-in-one machine priced at $350, through to the mid-range KitchenAid Cook Processor at $799, and up to the higher end of the price scale, with models such as the Kenwood kCook Multi Smart at $1699 and the Thermomix TM6 at $2269.

What can a Thermomix do?

The Thermomix TM6 does the job of more than 20 appliances, allowing you to chop, beat, blend, whip, weigh, mill, knead, mince and more. You can use it to whip up everything from banana bread and scones to butter chicken, pumpkin soup, pizza dough or mashed potato – the recipe possibilities run into the many thousands.

The TM6's Wi-Fi connectivity gives you access to 50,000-plus recipes from the touchscreen.

Here are just some features of the Thermomix TM6:

The Thermomix is designed to help you whip up a dizzying array of dishes, including soups and stews.

CHOICE experts review the latest Thermomix

CHOICE kitchen expert Fiona Mair notes that the standout features for her that differentiate the Thermomix from other cheaper models is its general performance, and its pre-programmed recipes and Wi-Fi connectivity that gives you access to a huge database of step-by-step cooking guides and recipes.

"When it comes to all-in-one appliances, you get what you pay for," she says. "Cheaper all-in-one appliance brands such as Aldi's Mistral and Kogan have limited instructions and recipe guides as compared with the more expensive brands, which can be an issue if you've never used an all-in-one appliance before.

"Using one of these appliances is a different way of cooking and preparing foods, so initially you'll need guidance and specific recipes. These are features that the more expensive brands are better at delivering.

"If you're considering buying an all-in-one machine to replace most of your kitchen appliances, my advice would be to choose a brand that has excellent instructions with basic recipes, plus continued support and updates."

CHOICE tip: In our full review of the Thermomix TM6 we compare it with other machines, including the TM5 Thermomix, to give it a detailed score on performance, how easy it is to use and safety.

Our kitchen experts used the TM6 Thermomix to make honeycomb, following a recipe in the Cookidoo recipe database.

Reasons to buy a Thermomix

Reasons to avoid a Thermomix

Is the Thermomix safe to use?

Thermomix in Australia was fined $4.6 million in April 2018 for misleading customers about the burn risks of their TM31 model. At the time, CHOICE testing had found the TM5 Thermomix to be an excellent all-in-one kitchen machine but we suspended our recommendation due to substandard customer care.

As a result of the fine, Thermomix offered to upgrade any customers who had bought the TM31 model between July 2014 and 23 September 2014 to the newest model at the time – the TM5. The ACCC allegations about the potential safety risk in 2014 did not relate to the Thermomix TM5 or TM6.

Although the TM6 performs well in our tests, we would like to see a safety cut-off for speed when heating above 60°C before we recommend this product

CHOICE kitchen expert, Fiona Mair

Our kitchen experts agree that the TM6 model includes improved safety features, but there are still some concerns in case users choose to operate the machine manually.

Fiona says: "The new safety feature in the latest TM6 model is that it will deactivate the temperature if the user exceeds speed 6 when using the heat setting manually. This is still an issue if the contents have been heated to 100°C, as it's still able to blend the very hot contents at high speed, which presents safety concerns.

"Although this product performs well in our tests, we would like to see a safety cut-off for speed when heating above 60°C before we recommend this product."

Thermomix issues safety notice in August 2022

Thermomix manufacturer Vorwerk issued a safety notice about the TM5 and TM6 in August 2022, saying it had observed a "few cases" where, under certain circumstances, the use of the TM6 cup in the machine could cause uncontrolled spillages and potential burns. They advised owners of both the Thermomix TM5 and TM6 models that they should use the simmering basket instead of the TM6 measuring cup when cooking at temperatures of 95°C and above to avoid any dangerous issues.

CHOICE believes that although the Thermomix manufacturer has been proactive in dealing with the safety issue, the solution they have offered is imperfect and consumers may be entitled to a refund under Australian Consumer Law.

What do Thermomix owners say?

CHOICE staff member Clarissa has owned a Thermomix for seven years and says she uses it at least once every day.

"I use it for loads of things – smoothies, baking, cooking sauces and dips and things like dukkah," she says. "Today I will be making pizza dough and pizza sauce for homemade pizza. I also frequently do all-in-one meals (bangers and mash all at the same time is a favourite in our household)."

Of the expense, Clarissa says: "It is expensive, however, if I were to break it down and weigh it up against how often I use it, I would say it is probably worth it. I would be curious to try a cheaper competitor as well, though."

Another staff member and owner Kate says: "I bought a Thermomix when my youngest was a baby and I used it quite a bit because I was home all the time. I really like the built-in recipes as it makes it super easy to use, although we don't use it that much for cooking full meals.

"Despite not using it every day, I do think the expense is worth it. Whenever I do use it, I marvel at its simplicity and functionality. Not needing to get out a bunch of chopping boards, scales, multiple bowls, pots and pans etc. is amazing."

I use it for everything: cooking main meals, grinding, making smoothies, mixing dough and more. It is also great for kids to use with minimal supervision

Thermomix owner Karen

Thermomix fan Karen is onto her second machine – her first she owned for 13 years before upgrading recently to the newest model.

"I use it for everything," she says. "Cooking main meals, grinding, making smoothies, mixing dough and more. It is also great for kids to use with minimal supervision.

"If you broke the expense down to a cost per year, my Thermomix would cost me $140 per year so far, so I think it's worth the investment, as opposed to buying a cheaper machine that you have to replace every couple of years.

"This type of cooking is not for everyone, but you really need to see it in action before you dismiss it."

Where can you buy a Thermomix?

You can't buy a Thermomix from a standard retailer. They're sold by independent consultants, who hold 'Cooking Experiences' in home and workplaces to show the features of the machine.

Once you've bought one, your consultant will deliver your Thermomix for an introduction, and the consultant is supposed to be available for advice, ideas and assistance with your machine.

If you don't want to buy one through a consultant, you're now able to buy one online through the Thermomix website.

We care about accuracy. See something that's not quite right in this article? Let us know or read more about fact-checking at CHOICE.

I absolutely love my TM6 and sugggest to my son-in-law he get my daughter one. She has honestly had the worst experience ever, hers died after one use and rather than send a new one she’s had to package it up and send it back. A week later she’s heard nothing. We have the most amazing thermomix consultant and she’s doing her best. My daughter is very sick and this stress is not what she needed. More a hinderance than a help sadly.

Love my Thermi

published

My TM5 was passed down to me and at first I was very overwhelmed by it, but now I use it multiple times a day from cooking meals, to baking, to even dog treats. It has opened up a whole new world of food for me and I love being able to make so many things from scratch instead of constantly eating processed foods.

Costs a bomb but definitely worth it

published

I was very skeptic all about the thermomix initially - it seemed like a cult driven overpriced blender. But, I’m happy to be proven wrong. I bought one to help a friend out who has become a consultant but I have found I am relying on it more and more. Unlike most people I use it predominantly for making cocktails but have since started utilising some more of the functions like making sourdough, oat milk and dips. It really has found itself into my daily routine and I’m grateful for it. It’s expensive yes but you use it often and it appears to be built very well so I expect it to last for a long time. It is probably louder than I expected so be prepared.

Terrible customer service

I do enjoy having my thermomix however I find it is an overpriced appliance as I rarely cook meals, I chop, weigh steam but cooking isn't the same then on stove top or oven, risotto's come out ok. ..But the most frustrating and disappointing thing of late is the customer service. If there is a fault, for example the scales don't' work they expect you to pack your 2.5K appliance and send through Australia post, even if you reside close to their Braeside facility they will not accept drop offs or your own personal courier. I find this appalling and disgraceful. Why should you be expected to pack your overpriced delicate appliance and post through Australia Post. Lift up your game Thermomix...

Bad Design for Australian conditions.

published

I have had this appliance for quite sometime and until recently it has worked well enough but, as it was an extremely expensive purchase ($2000) and as it was only useful for a relatively narrow range of tasks I would only use it once or twice a week, I did not expect it to stop working and only be able to be repaired at a cost of $500 plus. It cost $135 non refundable to find out what the repair cost would be. I was told that cockroaches and possibly other insects had gotten in and eaten the circuit board and had also affected the jug's abili...

Read morety to gauge temperature. I also noticed that an insect had become lodged under the plastic screen window. They told me I didn't keep it clean enough! This is an appliance which is supposed to be kept on the kitchen bench (which it was) and I cleaned it after every use. I agree the design and weight make the body of the machine not particularly easy to keep clean. If insects can get into the circuitry, that is a design fault and the appliance is unsuitable to be sold in Australia where, at least on the east coast, cockroaches are endemic. I would not have confidence that the newer machines are any better sealed. I have owned an ordinary food processor which had a much longer life than this machine for a fraction of the cost. I have now purchased a cheap look alike which operates just as well for $145. Let's see how long it lasts.

Thermomix TM31

I have had ongoing problems with my T31 - so much so that I am thinking of tossing it out. This model had the issue with hot liquids spraying out of the lid and so a new lid seal was provided. HOWEVER ever since this seal has been in place the machine has frequently not worked :"OPE.n" is displayed. The machine has been posted down to Melbourne to be fixed twice and still does not work consistently. I have been told to 'carefully' open and close (!) which I do ... very carefully but some force is required to push the lid into position because the new ring seal is too stiff.

Has anyone else had this issue?

My path to a professional blender

So it's been probably a month since I started drinking green smoothies. I promised. that I will share my impressions about taste preferences and blenders. Maybe my personal experience will be useful to someone.

I made all cocktails with the same initial data - apples with peel, cut into pieces, greens only have leaves, sprouts.

The first unit that I tried to make a cocktail was the Bamix immersion blender.

The result is negative, i.e. even remotely, a homogeneous structure did not turn out, only eat with a spoon.

Next I bought a small (0.8l) PRINCESS 217400 stationary blender.

Princess stationary blender 217400
Stationary blender for making purees, fitness drinks, milkshakes, sauces, drinking vegetables and fruits for additional baby food
for preparing drinks to go (drink-to-go)
Powerful motor (350W) with low vibration
0.8 liter glass bowl
Lid with window for adding ingredients
Quick release blender base with stainless steel blade
2 speeds and pulse
bowl
Sturdy base with rubber feet.

The main advantage of this blender is its small size. That is why I took it with me on a fishing trip to Astrakhan. I downloaded 2 times a day (for myself and my husband).

The result is a homogeneous structure, interspersed with apple peel and greens (you can see it in the photo). The seedlings are crushed badly.

After. when you drink a cocktail, you must rinse your mouth, because these individual particles get clogged wherever possible. And you can chew them before dinner.)

This has one more drawback - a small size. Those. if you decide to seriously "get hooked" on green cocktails, then the norm for 1 person is 1l / day, and if there are two of you, then, respectively - 2l. Therefore, in order not to bother with dual loading, the volume of the blender is 2 liters.

By the way, I bought two eco-bottles from tupperware. They are 0.75 liters (not a liter, but close). I make cocktails in the morning, immediately pour into two bottles. Husband takes it with him to the car. I drink at about 12 o'clock.

The next experiment in the Thermomix

The result is the same. as in the previous blender. The only thing is that the sprouts beat a little better, but not by much. Of the minuses - at maximum load it jumps on the table, splashes liquid through the lid, smears it on the walls and lid, leaves unground pieces. dried fruits, for example.

In principle, this could have been stopped; you can drink. But I did not like these pieces on my teeth, especially since a hole was somehow strangely sealed in one of my teeth. that remained super-sensitivity. And it is very unpleasant when such "muck" gets there. Plus to this. Still, I am hopeful. what the child will drink. I gave him a taste, he drank. He said that it was delicious, but he also refuses because of the skins.

For a very long time I read reviews on blenders. The best option is Vitamix Vita-Prep 3.

Why should you choose JTC's OmniBlend V TM-800 Powerful Professional Blender? Because this model is a popular representative of the JTC OmniBlend line, which successfully competes with brands such as Blendtec and Vitamix, and has some design features:

• Powerful industrial motor for cutting tool speeds up to 650 revolutions per second.
• Motor power 950 watts.
• Built-in relays successfully protect the motor from overloads and overheating, which means that the motor will last longer.
• Special drive design reduces noise levels.
• The sharpest 3D knife, blades of which are oriented in pairs up, down and in a horizontal plane, is made of hardened stainless steel using innovative technologies.
• The special shape of the knife allows you to successfully process solid products (coffee beans, ice), grind, mix, crumble soft products, whip and mix creams, purees, smoothies, cocktails. In this case, the entire contents of the blender bowl is processed evenly.
• The blender's timer allows you to automatically select the most optimal processing time - 90, 60 or 35 seconds.
• For controlled chopping of food, you can use the impulse rotation of the knives.
• The most important part of a blender is the bowl. It is made in the form of a monolithic casting of heavy-duty polycarbonate, withstands high temperatures, is resistant to external damage, does not contain toxic impurities and is absolutely safe.
• The OmniBlend V TM-800 has a large 2 liter bowl and a narrow base that allows you to successfully cook both one serving and large quantities of food.

And most importantly, unlike its older American brother, it has protection against overheating.

The first thing I made was ice cream made from frozen strawberries, cream and sugar. It turned out great. Grinded strawberry pits!

Then I made a cocktail of celery greens (with stalks), apples, only I removed the core and cut into quarters, wheat germ. The result is great. The seedlings are completely ground, the greens do not creak on the teeth.

After that I made juice from pomegranate seeds. The result is 5 minus. Those. completely ground, but after settling a certain amount of seeds settled in the sediment. I took a picture with an old camera, but now I can’t find a cord to connect it to my computer. In general, I apologize for the quality. More precisely th lack of photographs. I take pictures on my phone. because My Canon worker broke. There was only a DSLR left, but I'm too lazy to pull it and twist the lenses. I hope that I can still find the lace.

In general, I do not pretend to be the ultimate truth, but my conclusion is - if you are not afraid of individual parts of the skins and herbs in a cocktail, then an ordinary stationary blender of the appropriate size and power is enough. The result for everyone will be about the same. If you want a perfect smooth texture - only a professional blender.

Ufff..tired myself..)))

Test: Redmi 10

A little over a year after the release of Redmi 9, Xiaomi is sending its successor, the Redmi 10, into the race. In addition to many updates, we are waiting for a fresh design. This is where we start the test.

Redmi 10: design, workmanship and delivery

Redmi 9 design has been accepted. Instead, Redmi 10 has the same design as its older brother - Redmi Notes 10 (Pro) - copied.

The first glance falls directly on the chamber hill, which separates the main chamber from the other chambers with a silver border. Next to the main camera there is an inscription "Camera 50 MP". And also under the camera mound, the inscription "AI-CAM PHOTOGRAPHY SYSTEM" indicates that the Redmi 10 camera is of great value. But more on that later.

Incidentally, the camera protrusion protrudes from the rear by as much as 2.5 mm, which means that the smartphone inevitably leans on the camera when it is in the supine position, and sways when working.

The frame and back of Redmi 10 are made of plastic. The matte finish of my test unit in Carbon Gray shimmers stylishly in the light. Here, too, fingerprints cannot be avoided, which will slightly fade the appearance. The smartphone is available in other colors: Pebble White and Sea Blue.

The 161.95-inch display sits on the front of the smartphone, measuring 75.53 x 8.92 x 181mm and weighing 6.5g. The 8MP front camera was placed in the top center in the best possible way. Above is a narrow and barely noticeable earpiece. There is no notification LED, despite the lack of a always-on feature.

To the left of the bezel is the SIM tray, which accepts two nano-SIMs and a microSD card. On the opposite side are the volume rocker and the power button, which also houses the fingerprint scanner.

Redmi 10 features a stereo speaker, which is not usually found in this price range. In terms of connections, we will have a USB-C connector at the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top. Last but not least, we will have an infrared transmitter to control TVs and two microphones for telephony.

Nothing negative to say about the build quality of the Redmi 10. Nothing creaks, creaks or gives up after a two week testing phase. Only the plastic back can be slightly scratched depending on how it is used.

In addition to the smartphone, the package includes a silicone protective case, a 22.5 W fast charger, a USB-C cable, a SIM card needle and a quick start guide.

Redmi 10: Display

The display is a 6.5-inch dot-scan display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. Of course, I would have liked an AMOLED display more, but that was not to be expected at this price. At least Xiaomi offers us a refresh rate of 90Hz, which makes the display smoother.

On my test device, I had to change the refresh rate to 90Hz in the settings. The default value is 60 Hz. There is no Adaptive Sync mode in the settings, that is, automatic frame rate adjustment. Although Xiaomi advertises Redmi 10 with this feature.

The color reproduction of the display is good, although moderate and far from the crisp AMOLED colors. In the settings, the color temperature and color mode (vivid, saturated and standard) can be adjusted later. The display contrast is weak. The decrease in contrast is especially noticeable when viewing the display at an angle. The content is still readable. It is possible that Xiaomi did not install an IPS panel here, but a regular LCD. After all, the type of display in the specifications is not indicated.

The maximum brightness of the display is sufficient for the display to remain legible in the sun. However, the Redmi 10's display reaches its limits in direct light. Auto brightness adjustment is fast.

The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a protective glass that is scratch resistant and shatterproof. The touch screen responds quickly and accurately recognizes input.

Redmi 10 performance and user interface

The core of Redmi 10 is the MediaTek Helio G88 system-on-a-chip, which consists of an octa-core processor (2x Cortex A75 @ 2.05 GHz and 6x Cortex A55 @ 1.8 GHz), Mali GPU G52 MC2 and Cat7. LTE modem.

3DMark
Geekbench
AnTuTu

Helio G88 is the successor of Helio G85. The only differences are support for a 90Hz display and compatibility with 64MP camera sensors. In terms of storage, you can choose from 4+64GB, 4+128GB, or 6+128GB. The RAM is LPDDR4x type, the internal data memory is eMMC type. The data memory can be expanded using a microSD card.

That's all about the technical side of things. Much more important is how you should evaluate the performance of the Redmi 10. Although the SoC is not one of the strongest, the smartphone can run smoothly for the most part. Redmi 12.5 does a good job of fast scrolling and swiping through the MIUI 11 (Android 10) UI. Only in a web browser on resource-intensive websites can some clumsiness occur when scrolling quickly. However, this is high-level grumbling.

Application and game loading times are average. But this moment is also not unpleasant and corresponds to the price range. Mobile games like PUBG were acceptable in the test with HD graphics and high refresh rates. Usually jerks occur when reloading textures. Casual players definitely pay off. However, if you expect high performance in mobile gaming, then you should look into the higher price range.

Redmi 10: Camera

The back is adorned with quad cameras with a 50 MP main camera (f / 1.8), an 8 MP ultra wide-angle camera (f / 2. 2 FOV 120 °), a 2 MP macro camera (f / 2.4) and 2 -megapixel camera. MP Depth Sensor (f/2.4). On the front, we finally have an 8 MP front camera for selfies.

Redmi 10 is the first smartphone to use Samsung's new 50MP S5KJN1 image sensor.

Main chamber

In daylight, useful recordings can be made using the main camera. Image clarity, colors and level of detail are in line with the price range. The noise component also remains low.

By means of so-called pixel binning, ie grouping of blocks of pixels, a higher light sensitivity is achieved and at the same time the signal-to-noise ratio is improved. That's why photos are only saved at 50MP despite the 12MP sensor. A separate 50MP recording mode is also available, but it's much more convenient than it offers a lot of added value.

Redmi 10 is especially difficult for high contrast scenes. Here the dynamic range quickly reaches its limits. However, the HDR auto mode offers a good balance. You should definitely activate it!

Night mode enabled
Night mode off

In poor lighting conditions, especially at night, the recording quality deteriorates noticeably. Details are increasingly lost and colors look washed out. Night mode helps only to a limited extent, slightly increasing image dynamics and level of detail.

Ultra Wide Angle

An ultra wide angle camera that delivers surprisingly good images for this price range was a pleasant surprise. Vibrant colors, good image sharpness and subtle distortion at the edges characterize the quality of the recording.

wide angle
No wide angle

Other sensors

The macro camera and depth sensor - as is often the case - offer no functional advantage. At best, you will try the macro function 1-2 times. Bokeh shots are taken in good light with clean blur. The 8 MP front camera is enough for selfies or video calls.

video recording

Unlike the photo, the video function was disappointing. On the one hand, the video is recorded at a resolution of no more than 1080p at 30 frames per second, on the other hand, there is no useful electronic image stabilization. When you're shaky like me, you just can't record usable videos. You can get an idea of the video quality here:

Redmi 10: connectivity

mobile

Redmi 10 is especially good in terms of connectivity. The smartphone supports all 2G, 3G and 4G mobile radio frequencies or bands commonly used in Europe. Cell phone reception is good, and voice quality through both the handset and the speakerphone is excellent. The second microphone suppresses disturbing noise very well without affecting the quality. Both VoLTE and VoWiFi are supported.

WiFi and Bluetooth

Again, there is nothing wrong with that. In WLAN, the Redmi 10 impresses with good range and decent bandwidth. Bluetooth is available in version 5.1.

GPS and sensors

Redmi 10 can move without deviations and falls. The smartphone determines the exact position in a few seconds. The smartphone uses GPS and Galileo, GLONASS and Beidou satellite navigation systems to determine its location.

Sensor system includes acceleration sensor, electronic compass, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, virtual gyroscope and electronic compass. So far it's pretty standard.

IR Transmitter (Infrared Transmitter) is a feature. Combined with the pre-installed “Mi remote control” app, you can control various electrical devices such as TVs, audio systems or DVD players with your smartphone. However, it must be a device with an infrared receiver. The application is already configured with a wide list of manufacturers and devices.

The presence of NFC, which is especially important for mobile payments, is very important. Here you should pay attention to which version of Redmi 10 you want to get. The global version does not have NFC. The EU version, on the other hand, supports NFC and thus also allows mobile payments (Google Pay).

Fingerprint Readers

The fingerprint reader is integrated into the power button on the side.
