“After working with Butler's Pantry, we would immediately recommend them to anyone looking to hire a caterer for their wedding. From the outset, they were professional, courteous, accommodating, and helpful. They guided us through every step of the planning process and did an amazing job on the day of our wedding. The services they provide are extremely comprehensive and that truly helps to alleviate a lot of the stress that comes along with planning a wedding. We received a TON of compliments on the food and many of our guests said it was the best wedding food they'd ever had.”

Modern pantry in the kitchen
A pantry is a room where drinks, food, and sometimes utensils, household cleaning products, linens or groceries. Pantries with food and drinks serve as auxiliary kitchens. The word "pantry" comes from the same source as the Old French term panel ; this is from pain , the french form of latin panis , "bread". [1]

History in Europe and the USA
Late Middle Ages
In the late medieval hall, there were separate rooms for various service functions and food storage. The pantry was where the bread was stored and the cooking associated with it was done. The head of the office responsible for this room was referred to as pants . There were similar rooms for storing bacon and other meats (pantry), alcoholic beverages (oily) (known for the "butts" of barrels stored there) and food preparation (kitchen). [ citation needed ]

Colonial era
In the United States, pantries developed from the early Colonial American "butterflies" built in the cold north corner colonial home (more commonly referred to and spelled as "buttrey"), to various storerooms on self-sustaining homesteads. Butler pantries or porcelain pantries were built between the dining room and kitchen in an English or American middle-class home, especially in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Grand estates such as the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina or Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio had large labyrinths of pantries and other home "offices" echoing their Great House British counterparts. [ citation needed ]
Victorian
Via Victorian Large houses and estates in Britain used separate rooms, each dedicated to a different stage of cooking and cleaning. The kitchen was for cooking and food was stored in a pantry, pantry or cellar. Preparing the meat before cooking was done in the pantry (remember that often in these large houses the game came naked, the fish without fillets and the meat in half or quarter carcasses), and the cleaning and preparation of vegetables was done indoors. dishwasher. Washing of dishes was done in the buffet or butler's pantry, "depending on the type of dishes and the degree of soiling". [2] Since the dishwasher was a room with running water, it had a sink, and it was here that the most messy cooking, such as cleaning fish and butchering raw meat, took place. The pantry was where crockery was stored, such as china, glassware, and silverware. If the pantry had a sink for washing dishes, it was a wooden sink lined with lead to prevent chipping of china and glassware during washing. In some middle-class homes, pantry, pantry, and pantry may simply be large wooden cabinets, each with its own exclusive purpose. [3]
Types
Asian pantry
Main article: Tansu
Traditionally, cuisines in Asia have been more open format than those in the West. The function of the pantry was performed mainly by wooden carpentry. For example, in Japan, a kitchen cabinet is called "Mizuya Tansu". A significant tradition of woodworking and cabinetry in general developed in Japan, especially throughout the Tokugawa period. A huge number of designs for Tansu (chests or cabinets) have been made, each one adapted to one purpose or another.
The idea is very similar to that of the Hoosier wardrobe, with a wide range of functions served by specific design innovations.
Butler's Pantry
Little White House Pantry
A Butler's Pantry or Serving Pantry is a utility room in a large house, mainly used to store servings, not food. Traditionally, the butler's pantry was used for cleaning, counting, and storing silver; European butlers often slept in the pantry, as their job was to keep the silver under lock and key. The merchant's account books and a wine journal may also have been kept there. The room will be used by the butler and other household staff; it is often referred to as the butler's pantry, even in homes where there is no butler. [ citation needed ]
In modern homes, butler pantries are usually located in the transitional spaces between the kitchen and dining room and are used as staging areas for serving meals. They usually contain countertops as well as storage space for candles, serving utensils, table linens, crockery, wine, and other dining items. More sophisticated versions may include dishwashers, refrigerators, or sinks. [ need quote ]
Butler pantries have become popular in recent times. [4]
Cold pantry

External cold pantry vents
Some foods such as butter, eggs, milk, etc. need to be kept cool. Before the advent of modern refrigeration, refrigerators were popular. However, the problem with the freezer was that the cabinet it was in was large, but the actual refrigerated space was quite small, so a clever and innovative solution was invented - the "cold pantry", sometimes referred to as the "California refrigerator". [5] The cold pantry was usually a cupboard or cupboard with slatted shelves (for air circulation). An opening near the top that opens outward, either through the roof or high up in the wall. The second opening at the bottom also opened out, but low to the ground and usually on the north side of the house, where the air was cooler. As the air in the pantry warmed up, it rose up, escaping through the top opening. This, in turn, drew in cooler air from the lower vent, allowing cooler air to circulate at all times. In summer, the temperature in a cold pantry will usually be several degrees below the ambient temperature in the house, and in winter, the temperature in a cold pantry will be much lower than in a house.

The cold pantry was the perfect place to store food that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Bread, butter, syrniki, eggs, pastries, and pies were common foodstuffs kept in a cold pantry. Vegetables could be brought from the root cellar in smaller quantities and stored in a cold pantry until used. There was plenty of room in the fridge, so the cold pantry was a great place to store fresh berries and fruits.
Hoosier cabinet
Main article: Hoosier cabinet
First developed in the early 1900s by the Hoosier manufacturing company in Newcastle, Indiana and popular in the 1930s, the Hoosier cabinet and its many imitators soon became a fixture in American kitchens . Often referred to as a "pantry and kitchen in one," Hoosier brought the ease and readiness of a pantry to the kitchen with its many storage spaces and work counter. It was sold in catalogs and through a unique sales program targeted at farm wives. Today, the Hoosier cabinet is a very popular and widely reproduced home icon. [ citation needed ]
Books
The chapters of earlier books, especially those written in the era of domestic science and domestic economy in the second half of the 19th century, told how to equip, maintain and clean the pantry. Catherine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, in their seminal Home of the American Woman (1869), [6] , advocated the elimination of the pantry by installing shelves and cabinets in the kitchen. The idea didn't catch on in American homes until a century later, when the pantry became a floor-to-ceiling closet in the post-war era. [ which one? ] kitchen. During the Victorian era and until World War II When housing changed dramatically, pantries were commonplace in virtually all American homes. This was because kitchens were small and strictly utilitarian, rather than the domestic, often well-equipped center of the home that was enjoyed today or during colonial times. [ citation needed ] So pantries were important workspaces with built-in shelving, cabinets and countertops.
In the final chapter of Those Happy Golden Years , Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote a descriptive account of the pantry that Almanzo Wilder built for her at their first home in DeSmet, South Dakota. It describes in great detail the working pantry on the farm, which she sees for the first time since her marriage to Wilder and subsequent journey to their new home. [ citation needed ]
Pantry raids were often a common occurrence in early 20th century children's literature and advertising. Perhaps the most famous pantry incident in literature occurred when Mark Twain and Tom Sawyer had to repent for getting into Aunt Polly's jam in her pantry: as punishment, he had to whitewash her fence. 9 Twain, Mark (1876). The Adventures of Tom Sawyer .
