Stevie Nicks Abandoned Her Multimillion-Dollar Home Because She Didn’t Have a Family

Stevie Nicks has had a number of meaningful relationships and a fulfilling career. She chose to prioritize her career over starting a family. While she’s content with this decision, she once bought a house because of the family who lived there. When she moved in alone, she realized that it was the family, not the home, that she fell in love with.

Stevie Nicks appreciates nice home decor

Nicks has access to many luxuries, but her favorite extravagance comes in the form of home decor.

“I’m obsessed with lighting,” she told Vanity Fair. “I’m constantly shopping for different lightbulbs. I love rainbow lightbulbs. And, also, one should not live without dimmers. Life is all about lighting.”

She uses different forms of lighting for ambiance when she’s at home.

“I keep a fireplace burning – even when it’s 99 degrees,” she told Rolling Stone. “I just turn the air-conditioning down. My mother goes crazy. She says, ‘Do you know how much money you spend to keep this house cool, and then you burn fires in every single room? You’re so weird, Stevie.’ A fire creates ambiance. I need that fire. So back off, Mom.”

She rarely uses one of her homes

In 2005, Nicks bought a six-bedroom home in the hills of Los Angeles that boasted impressive views of the ocean and the canyon. She reportedly bought the house for $9 million. Nearly immediately after she moved in, she realized she’d made a mistake.

“There was this big family living there that obviously loved this house,” she said, per the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis. “So there was a vibe. And something in me thought, Maybe I can have that. I was not there three days before I thought, What the hell do I do here?

Nicks realized that she loved the family’s dynamic more than the home. The place didn’t hold as much charm for a single person living there.

“I was too shallow and stupid to realize that it wasn’t the house I had fallen in love with, but the mom and the dad and the four kids, and the smells of the cooking,” she explained. “So it was a mistake from day one.”

Nicks moved back into her oceanfront condo, keeping the house for guests and special occasions, like recording albums. She prefers life this way, as she can hear the ocean from her glass-walled apartment.

Stevie Nicks is happy with her dogs and godchildren

Though Nicks fell in love with the family who lived in her house before her, she’s content living without a husband or children. She has many godchildren she dotes on, and she maintains a close network of friends.

“I live a single woman’s life and yes, I spend a lot of time by myself,” she told The New York Times. “I have a few very close friends, most of them I’ve known forever, and I kind of like it.”

She is open to a new relationship but doesn’t feel that it’s a necessary part of a fulfilled life.

“If it were to happen to me I’d be thrilled,” she explained. “But when I’m 90 years old and sitting in a gloriously beautiful beach house somewhere on this planet with five or six Chinese Crested Yorkies, surrounded by all my goddaughters who will at that point be middle-aged, I’ll be just as happy.”

Inside Stevie Nicks' 'Commune' Living Situation in Arizona

Stevie Nicks is unmarried and has no children, but that doesn’t mean she lives alone. Nicks has had multiple roommates, ranging from friends to godchildren to family members. In the early 2000s, Nicks owned a home in Arizona that she shared with her brother and his family. Here’s a look inside the glamorous home, which Nicks described as a sort of commune.

Stevie Nicks has always loved Arizona, where she was born

Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona. While her family frequently moved, residing in New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and California, she feels a strong connection to Arizona. In a concert in the state, she spoke about her love for it before dedicating the show to her younger brother, Christopher.

“More than Oakland or San Jose, this actually is my home,” she said, per AZ Central. “I was born here in 1948. So I lived here and I loved it and I had a house here for a long, long time and my parents, and I wrote a lot of songs here … So I would like to dedicate this song to someone who no matter what our problems are or how much we fight or what comes between us, he always has my back, my brother, Christopher Nicks.”

She added that she was sorry she no longer lived in Phoenix.

“A lot of our songs were written here. It’s good to be home,” she said. “Phoenix, I’m so sorry I don’t live here anymore.”

Stevie Nicks had a very communal living arrangement

Nicks liked Arizona so much that she bought a house there in the 1980s. She shared the five-bedroom home with Christopher, his wife Lori, and their daughter Jessi. They split the house into two wings, one for her and one for her brother’s family.

“I kind of live in a commune,” she told In Style in 2002, per The Nicks Fix. “Several other people live here off and on. It’s always been that way — I have my own party wherever I go.”

The home, which she sold in 2007, had a spacious entryway with a stained glass window that lit the space in color.

“The moment I saw this room, I said, ‘Oh, I want this house,'” she explained.

The rest of the home fit Nicks’ tastes. A crimson-walled living room held a grand piano covered in roses, and a white piano was draped in shawls in a separate room. Her bedroom featured lace, velvet, and silk fabrics. She also had black drapes for when she wanted to darken the home and rely on the many candles and jewel-toned lamps for lighting.

“I have to live in dramatic places,” she said. “For me, atmosphere is everything.”

The Fleetwood Mac singer did not like her brother when she was growing up

Though she shared a home with him later in life, Nicks and her brother did not get along when they were young. She described herself as a “little diva” who resented no longer being the only child.

“I hated Chris,” she said, per the book Stevie Nicks: Visions, Dreams, and Rumours by Zoë Howe. “I would pull his hair and kick him … I’ll be apologizing to him for the rest of my life.”

Eventually, they grew close. Nicks’ brother worked for her and even married her backup singer.

Fleetwood Mac open new tour dates

Fleetwood Mac is back on the road. Stevie Nicks will return to the stage with the newly announced line-up of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Mike Campbell and Neil Finn as they embark on a 50+ city North American tour. nine0003

Beginning of October. 3 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the tour will take you through the Midwest, East and West Coast, and Canada before concluding on April 5 in Philadelphia.

The inclusion of Campbell and Finn comes after the band parted ways with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

“We were supposed to go to a rehearsal in June and he wanted to put it off until November [2019]. It's been a long time," NYX explained to Rolling Stone in the band's first interview since the split. “I just did 70 shows [on a solo tour]. As soon as I finish one thing, I dive back into another. Why should we stop? We don't want to stop playing music. We have nothing else to do. That's what we're doing.” nine0003

"Words like 'fired' are ugly references to my knowledge," Fleetwood said. “Not to fence, but we reached a dead end, hitting a brick wall. For us, this was not a happy situation in terms of the logistics of a functioning group. To that end, we have made the decision that we cannot continue with it. Most of the rules are in terms of what we need to do as a group and move forward.”

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday, May 4 at 10 am local time, except for three shows in Kentucky, New York and New Jersey. American Express card members will be able to secure their seats early in multiple markets from Monday, April 30th at 10am and Thursday, May 3rd at 10pm. LaneOne VIP packages, which include perks such as transportation and preferential entry, will also be available in limited capacity. nine0003

The band also revealed that the tour will feature songs that cover the entire history of Fleetwood Mac.

“We've never been able to do this since 1975 because some people in the group weren't interested in doing it,” explained NYX. “Now we can open a set with more; a raucous version of [1969] ‘Rattlesnake Shake’ or something like that. I would also like to do [1970s] 'Station Man', which has always been one of May's favorites. We definitely do [1970s] 'oh, good.'”

SiriusXM will simultaneously launch the Fleetwood Mac channel on satellite radio channel 30 and through the SiriusXM app and website. The station will include music, interviews and hosted shows featuring current and former Fleetwood Mac members.
