Aqua blue and orange outdoor cushions colour the concrete sofas of this elegant Thailand villa.

The cabana and concrete built-in bench are cool, but it’s the explosion of purple climbers and potted plants that really brings this one to life.

This time purple climbers play second fiddle to a set of grand architectural arches and decorative stone corbels. Olive trees grow from the pebbled patio.

You can develop your own concept, look at design options on the Internet, or contact specialists to help resolve the issue. But you will need to rely on the standard requirements of the technology, the configuration of the main pool bowl, its dimensions and general technical characteristics.

First of all, you need to find out what kind of coverage around the pool will be comfortable and safe. Slippery and cold tiles with a glossy surface are not the best option. You should focus on a combination of safety, durability and decorativeness, not forgetting about your own comfort!

Porcelain stoneware around the pool

A good option that excels in surface strength and overall durability. With proper operation of the coating, as well as proper care, it is possible to extend the service life up to 15-20 years, taking into account the influence of the atmospheric environment.

Porcelain stoneware can be selected in accordance with all modern requirements for finishing the area around the pool. In the assortment of the market there are non-slip matte porcelain tiles, special with a rough surface, of any color and texture, of the right size!

Watch video:

What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles? What features to look for when choosing.

Clinker tiles

Heavy-duty material with a waterproof surface, which is used for exterior facade cladding, wall and architectural elements of buildings, laying garden paths and pedestrian alleys. The main advantages of clinker are the combination of naturalness and safety, as well as practicality of use. Any part of the finish can be restored by replacing just a few elements. The total service life is at least 25-30 years in conditions of constant moisture and temperature changes. Average price range. A special concrete or sand base is required for laying the material!

Concrete tiles

A classic pool perimeter that is practical in any interpretation:

Mosaic

Another original classic version, however, quite expensive due to the price of the material itself and the need for careful preparation of the surface for laying!

Mosaic around the pool - a beautiful decoration. You can choose from several standard options, as well as consider special design collections designed for swimming pools. It will be a small and durable mosaic in several colors, with a rough surface for safety.

It is more profitable to work with mosaics in the case of pools of irregular shape, if necessary, laying out a figured board and steps. Small-piece material copes with tasks that large-format tiles cannot do!

More often the mosaic is placed inside the pool bowl. In fact, this solution is more justified

Concrete casting near the pool

The solution is interesting because of the extended possibilities. The concrete mass will take the form given by the formwork, so you can work with almost any pool bowl, taking into account the requirements of landscape design around.

Concrete is durable, does not gain temperature, it can be qualitatively protected from moisture. If a change in appearance and a complete redesign is needed, the concrete surface will become the best basis for laying mosaics or porcelain tiles after the simplest preliminary preparation. Therefore, this option can be considered one of the most practical!

By the way, pay attention to modern concrete mixtures for landscape design. They can have decorative fillers in their composition, thanks to which slipping on the surface is excluded, aesthetics are significantly increased.

Large-format natural stone

Elite and expensive material that can be called almost eternal:

Depending on the stylization and your own preferences, you can work with decorative, ennobled samples, or choose wild stone to decorate the perimeter of the pool!

Crushed stone and pebbles

An original and inexpensive solution recommended for pools with canopies or partial tree cover. One of the reasons for this requirement is the rapid heating of small natural stones by the hot sun.

Such a coating is not slippery, it performs a massage effect on the feet, which is positive for blood circulation and just pleasant.

There is also a drainage function, thanks to which water does not stagnate near the pool bowl, but slowly drains through the cover layer.

Laying is quick, simple and does not require expensive preparatory work. A fairly flat surface and a compacted sand cushion in the shape of the future site. Application of geotextile or geogrid between layers is recommended!

Terrace board

Composite material or special wood with heat treatment. The main purpose is the design of open areas. The material is not afraid of exposure to moisture and direct contact with water, temperature changes and ultraviolet radiation. Today, this option is popular all over the world due to practicality and durability.

Terrace board prevents slipping, even if the surface is damp, completely wet. Contribute to this special notches and "velveteen" cellular structure. The board is tactilely pleasant, creates a massage effect and does not heat up in the sun. This is an option from the middle and higher price categories. Preparation of the base is required for the possibility of laying the decking around the perimeter of the pool!

Natural board around the pool

One of the most applicable options is natural board decking around the pool. The root cause is the availability of materials and their range on the market: various types of wood and degrees of preparation and processing of the material. Also, the shape and dimensions of the board, readiness for laying or raw material for independent work from scratch!

Wooden podium, flooring, deck - an acceptable solution for any pool. The material fits perfectly into the landscape, is convenient and practical, environmentally friendly, maintainable. It is possible to update after several years of service, overhaul after 5-8 years, partial replacement to extend the life of the total mass of the finish!

Artificial turf

In the era of the development of synthetic materials production technologies and their high popularity, it is worth mentioning the various market offers that are also worthy of attention. They can be based on composite or natural materials, have up to 20 or more components. Therefore, you should pay attention to the chemical content and health certificates, because the coating will come into contact with people, as well as the water in which you spend time:

Lawn around the pool

To make the area around the bowl safe, neutral to temperatures and improve the drainage effect, lawn grass can be chosen. It will need to be looked after, cut and watered in time, and also combed out so that dry residues do not get inside the pool. But, despite such difficulties, the green grass around the pool is a good solution that is directly combined with the landscaping of the territory!

To make things easier, many pool owners use turf and artificial grass, the basic parameters of which today are close to natural material!

How to take care of your lawn. Including in the winter period

Almost all of the previously mentioned options can be combined with each other, if it is appropriate in your individual situation of territory design. Regardless of the choice, it is worth focusing on several important requirements, which will become the starting point for choosing materials. This is the placement and location of the pool, the estimated service life and material of the bowl, the seasonality of use and the availability of a cover for the pool. The main characteristics of the materials are reliability and durability, environmental safety and movement safety, resistance to moisture and chemicals, neutral perception of negative atmospheric factors, and no slipping!

Pool end cladding

If the bowl is installed above ground level, if it is a frame, composite, concrete or steel pool, it may be necessary to clad the end part that rises above the ground. Such a finish is mandatory, because the outer part of the bowl, which is mainly hidden in the recess, does not have the most attractive appearance!

Natural and terraced boards, sawn timber with heat treatment, ceramic tiles and mosaics, clinker, natural stone and coping stone are used for finishing - material for finishing corners, ends, joints. As you can see, you can use any convenient material that is resistant to moisture and the ability to decorate the structure with high quality!

Tip: The end piece that rises above the ground with this type of bowl setting is the most visible. Therefore, you can focus on budget materials, but also "put pressure" on organicity and combination in the overall composition with other finishes, stylization and decoration of the ennobled area around!

Additional design of the area around the pool

What else should be provided to make using your own beach near the house comfortable?

I would start with a general plan. It can be drawn up even before the selection and installation of the pool, but it is also possible after the equipment of the area for bathing and swimming. On the one hand, one might wonder about serious design and landscape design, but often a pencil and a piece of paper, as well as a few ideas that have long been stuck in the head, are enough!

Equipment for the pool

The first thing that is needed near the pool is the placement of equipment to ensure its vitality and performance. Skimmers, watering cans and lighting will not be touched. It's inside the bowl. But filtration systems, pumping and compressor equipment, water treatment systems - disinfection and temperature control, should be placed somewhere. Often, this is a large special unit with direct access, and it is installed in a special room of the indoor pool. But if the water facility is open, the best option would be to place it below deck, where the recreation area, sun loungers, slide, springboard, stairs are located. A side entrance is installed to turn on and off equipment, repair and preventive maintenance, and revision. The end part of the deck is often sheathed with a board or composite materials!

Leisure area equipment

This is a safe area with railings if elevated, and improved anti-slip surfaces. Chaise lounges are installed here, hammocks are hung, wicker furniture, a table with chairs are installed. Often, the recreation area is equipped with a barbecue, barbecue, hearth for evening relaxation in a warm atmosphere and a beautiful game of flames!

Nearby you can put rocking chairs, pergolas with shading, equip a playground and install an inflatable pool for kids!

Paths to the recreation area and decorative lighting are obligatory elements!

An outdoor shower should be placed nearby, because it is not recommended to go swimming in the pool immediately after a working day. An outdoor shower is also useful without a pool, because today it is an integral part of a suburban area. You can take a cool shower at any time, for example, after gardening or after a long time cooking delicious food on the grill.

The shower can be equipped with a stone or concrete platform, a plastic tray with water outlet to the drainage system or sewerage after filtration. It should be a semi-closed design that excludes the effects of drafts. Also, partial shading is desirable.

It is necessary to supply water, preferably hot and cold, or install a tank in which the water will warm up from the sun in summer. As internal equipment - a shower rack, a shower with a hose, a top watering can, a mixer, shelves for soap and shampoo, as well as hooks for clothes!

Shower finishes range from polyester roller blinds sliding over frame pipes to expensive wood or plastic sheathing. At your own discretion and in combination with the general program for the design of the recreation area, up to mosaics and natural stone!

Plants around the pool

Here the process is somewhat more complicated, because from the practical part we return to reflection again. You need to decide on styles and preferences, as well as the climate for the possibility of planting certain plants. They can be standard or tropical, to match the classic flora of your region.

It is worth considering options with the main compositions in the landscape, study the requirements for planting annuals and perennials, prepare special containers for them and get to work. I will not list the possible types of large and undersized, sun-loving and shade-loving plants, flowers and shrubs, since it is quite difficult to make compositions from thousands of plant species without knowing your preferences and the general design style of the recreation area around the pool. Therefore, I propose to solve this issue yourself!

Additional home beach equipment

You can make a lot of adjustments that will be interesting in certain cases:

Tip: If you like the latter solution, consider building a cast iron, copper or steel vat heated by an open fire. Such a health-improving structure will become a majestic crown of a complete set of a private recreation area!

Depending on your own views on the design of the recreation area and financial capabilities, the amount of free time and the size of the private area, I suggest deciding how exactly you will design the area around. There are really many options, but it is important to start not only from the visual advantages of beautiful projects in electronic form, but also independently make preliminary calculations, based on the possibilities, safety requirements, comfort and practicality!

10 beautiful relaxation zones in country houses

Arrangement of a comfortable recreation area by the pool is not an easy task, but desired by many. We have collected interesting examples in the article.

Publication date: 05/24/2020

Material prepared: Olga Doroshchenkova

The swimming pool in the house will make swimming available all year round and diversify the scenarios of a country holiday. One of the latest design trends for this area is a free-standing home spa building. And what else is popular and embodied by designers - we will show in our selection.

1. Separate spa complex in a modern style

Project by Oleg Klodt and Anna Agapova - a separate home spa complex with an equipped swimming pool. Everything has been thought out in the interior so that the owners of the house and guests at any time of the year can enjoy the silence and solitude of country life surrounded by a pine forest: a sauna, a shower and a lounge area with access to the terrace.

2. Roman Thermae style space

This private house not only has a living room and bedrooms, but also a spa area with a hammam. The pool area is decorated with a stained-glass ceiling and columns, lamps and Art Nouveau textiles. Wicker chaise lounge chairs with striped fabric upholstery also refer to the Art Nouveau era.

3. Light and airy pool interior

Spa areas are often decorated in light colors so as not to visually overload the space with unnecessary details and color. Designers Katie Ryzhova, Elena Tokmacheva, Peteris Lauchka-Lovchko and Petr Pospelov went further in their new project. "Weightless" furniture and the lightest textiles make this relaxation zone very effective.

4. Indoor swimming pool with panoramic windows

Panoramic windows in this house with a swimming pool contribute to the fusion of interior and surrounding space. The building is made of wood, and this also supports the ecological orientation of the interior.

5. Classic style swimming pool

Country chalet in the village of Knyazhie ozero near St. Petersburg designed in a classic style. The pool area also corresponds to the same direction: dark blue columns trimmed with wood, light ceiling, comfortable sun loungers. Nothing distracts in such an interior from relaxing and focusing on yourself.

6. A place where you can get close to nature

“The design of the pool continues the theme of dark surfaces, declared in the interior of this house, and at the same time it is our attempt, the desire to get away from a certain stamp, the prevailing image of the pool with multi-colored mosaics and lambrequins on the windows,” says one of the authors about the project Philip Yushin. Glass doors with a metal frame are made according to the sketches of the architects.

7. Spa complex in the aesthetics of Japanese minimalism

In this project, the small height of the ceilings in the spa complex was visually hidden by changing its geometry. Broken lines, skillful edge lighting, unusual decor - the ceiling seems to go up, and the style decision is reminiscent of Japanese minimalism.

8. Another example of minimalism

The house in which this pool is located is minimalist. There are no unnecessary details and intricate decorations. The spa complex is the same: only the direct purpose, clear lines, the main idea. However, all the important areas and items are here: sun loungers, a sofa, a sauna.

9. Bright pool area in a villa in Italy

This historic villa is located in Italy, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The southern location determined that the pool would be open. Huge umbrellas help to hide from the sun, lying on comfortable sun loungers, and make the rest as comfortable as possible.

10. Beverly Hills mansion party space

Partying in Beverly Hills is the norm, and an outdoor pool with 360 days of sunshine a year is a must.

With such dimensions, the space needs zoning. And so it was done: in the center there is a relaxation area with sun loungers, on the left is a dining group, and on the right are sofas and a bar. Everything you need for a great party.
