Shutters bathroom window

Waterproof Bathroom Window Shutters | The Shutter Store USA

Bathrooms can seem to present a challenge when it comes to dressing the window. Curtains or drapes won’t stand up to the steamy atmosphere, and the fabric can get in the way of the basin or bath, or intrude into the floor space making a compact room even smaller, and this functional room harder to move freely around in.

Are bathroom blinds the right choice?

If curtains aren’t a sound option, what about bathroom blinds? Wooden bathroom blinds can be warped by humidity, which means they won’t last. Some blind styles, meanwhile, only offer the option of having sections of the window covered or uncovered. This means blocking light entirely or compromising privacy – neither of which is desirable. Blinds can also be hard to clean, which is far from ideal in a room where hygiene is key.

So what’s the answer? Plantation shutters are the best dressing for bathroom windows. They’re elegant, practical and durable in even the steamiest family bathroom, and they're easy to care for.

Why are plantation shutters best for bathrooms?

With window shutters both light and privacy control are guaranteed. Close them completely for total discretion and to shut out the night for a cocooning atmosphere when you’re having a long relaxing soak in the tub. You can tilt the slats open and let in just the amount of daylight you need plus control any glare from bright sunlight. Open the slats completely, and shutters boost daylight while keeping the interior of the room hidden from prying eyes.

There’s plenty of flexibility in shutter styles, too. Choose between full height shutters, which cover the entire window, or, if only the lower part of the window needs to be dressed, consider café style shutters. These half-height shutters cover the bottom portion of the window to maintain bathroom users’ privacy and let all the daylight there is in through the top of the window – a configuration bathroom blinds just can’t provide.

Our recommendation? In the bathroom, we love the larger slats to maximize the light coming into the room, and to make keeping them clean even speedier.

What makes bathroom shutters so durable and waterproof?

Coverings like bathroom blinds and drapes can warp or become mildewed and need replacement to keep the atmosphere of the room healthy and the window properly dressed. Unlike these, our shutters – which are made from 100% hardwoods – can cope with everything the humid atmosphere of a bathroom throws at them, and are made to last.

Window treatment likely to get wet regularly because it’s near the shower? Kids splash in the tub, and splash the window, too? Shutters can still solve your bathroom window dressing dilemma. For these situations we offer vinyl shutters. They look and feel like wood but are 100% waterproof. Opt for them and you won’t have to worry about warping or shrinking of the window treatment however humid the room.

How easy is it to keep bathroom window shutters clean?

A bathroom that’s clean is essential, but no one wants to spend unnecessary time on keeping it that way, so ease of care is key. The choice of window dressing can mean the difference between speedy, effective cleaning and a time-consuming effort with poor results.

Plantation shutters are a breeze to look after. Because our shutters are made from 100% hardwoods, and our 100% waterproof shutters from vinyl, they won’t attract dirt in the first place, making life easier. Meanwhile, to keep them pristine, all they require is a wipe. It’s quick to do, and means you can rest assured that the window treatment in your bathroom is as clean as the rest of the fittings.

Is it easy to control light with shutters?

Shutters for bathrooms also give you total control of the light. Close them completely for full privacy, open them fully for maximum light, or go for something in between. When you want a relaxing bath, just tilt the slats to let in a small amount of light and enjoy the spa-like ambience.

When it comes to slat sizes, we recommend you go for a larger slat size in your bathroom. Although it’s tempting to go for something smaller, larger slats give you the full shutter effect, and let in more light.

What are vinyl bathroom shutters?

Our 100% hardwood shutters can cope with a lot, but if your window gets a daily shower, or your bathroom is very humid, our waterproof shutters might be the best option.

These vinyl shutters look and feel like wood, but are designed to be 100% waterproof. Which means, if you’re partial to a long soak, you don’t ever have to worry about warping or shrinking your shutters.

Common questions answered

Are waterproof shutters essential in bathrooms?

Our painted wooden shutters are hardwearing, which means they’ll work in most bathrooms. However, if you have a wetroom, or your shower is close to the window, our vinyl shutters are a good option.

Why are plantation shutters good for a bathroom?

Traditional bathroom window coverings like venetian blinds or bathroom shades can get damp and mildewed in a humid room. Shutters however are hardwearing, easy to clean and offer a level of privacy without blocking out the light.

Bathroom shutters - what to consider

With so many custom options for shutter materials such as colors, styles, and slat sizes, you can be sure of designing the perfect shutters for each room in your house. To narrow down your choices for bathroom window shutters, here are a few things to consider.

If you can dream it, we can design it!

Waterproof Bathroom Shutters

The main consideration when choosing bathroom shutters is whether the shutters will be exposed to moisture or not.

If your shutters will be near a sink, tub, or shower, you’ll want to choose a waterproof vinyl shutter. Our Affordable Fauxwood and American Polyvinyl are both waterproof solid polyvinyl with an aluminum core.

Painted hinges will be more resistant to rust than nickel or brass hinges. It’s always a good idea to wipe the hinges dry after exposure to water to prevent rusting.

A pro tip from our shutter experts is to choose a hidden tilt rod if the shutters are going in a wet area. The central tilt rod is connected to the slats with metal staples. The hidden rod eliminates more metal hardware and makes the shutters easier to clean.

Choose vinyl shutters for bathroom windows near running water.

Some bathroom windows are not near any sinks, tubs, or showers, and will not be exposed to moisture. In these cases, it is okay to use wooden shutters in a bathroom. If there is occasional humidity or condensation on the shutters, just be sure to dry them off with a towel to prevent water from being absorbed and potentially warping the wood.

For special shaped windows in a bathroom, like arched or triangular windows, these will need to be made in solid hardwood. No need to worry, as long as the shutters are not directly exposed to water on a regular basis.

You can opt for vinyl shutters near the sink and still have your special shaped windows covered with wooden shutters.

Full height or café style?

Your privacy is important, so depending on the location of your bathroom window, full height shutters may be best for full coverage. You can choose a mid-rail which will separate the upper and lower slats if you wish to keep the bottom slats closed for privacy and open the upper slats to let in some light.

Full height shutters with a mid-rail allow you full control over the amount of light-entry and privacy.

For 2nd floor windows, or windows that do not allow visibility into the home, café style shutters are a popular choice. These keep the lower portion of your windows covered, and still allow plenty of natural sunlight to come shining in from above.

Choosing a color

The most common choice for bathroom windows is white shutters. White shutters look clean and bright and will not make an already small room look any smaller. Bright colors make a room look more open than darker colors.

Window in the bathroom: photo of design in a private house and apartment

Bathrooms

We tell you about the features of bathrooms with a window and show how designers decorate such spaces.

The advantages of a bathroom window are obvious: in addition to letting in natural light and providing ventilation to the room, a bathroom window visually turns the bathroom into a full-fledged room. Finding a suitable city apartment, and even with such a nice addition, is a great success, it is easier to build a private house where the layout and design of the bathroom will meet all your ideas. However, further questions may arise: from the household “How to avoid problems with condensation?” (spoiler: a hood or climate valve will save you from this) to “How to style a bathroom with a window?” and “How to maintain privacy in such a space?”. Let's analyze the last two points in more detail.

Design features of a bathroom with a window

A window in a bathroom is an effective element that most often sets the layout of a space. Often, designers prefer to place the bath right next to the window: this way, taking a bath will turn from an ordinary relaxing procedure into a real meditation. But this solution has its own nuances: such a bath, especially if it is freestanding, should not be hidden behind curtains. From this it follows that in addition to an elegant bathroom with a window, it is also useful to have a practical shower.

Another feature concerns finishing materials. Since we have already agreed that a bathroom with a window is not for morning rushes and quick preparations, but for a relaxing holiday, water splashes are minimized. Therefore, the usual tiling can be safely replaced with expensive wallpaper or stucco decoration.

But in no case should aesthetics be at odds with functionality and comfort. Even when installing windows from trusted companies, make sure that there are no drafts and cold in the bathroom: calculate what kind of convectors or batteries of what power will suit your bathroom area, and do not neglect the size (or even number) of the heated towel rail - it will also make the bathroom warmer, and the photo above proves that the room does not lack elegance.

Window design

Window design in the bathroom depends on the overall style of the space and the shape of the window itself. The most practical option for a place with high humidity is blinds.

Curtains, shutters or blinds: 9 options for window decoration

In the Copper & Tin bathroom, they not only hide from prying eyes, but also maintain the overall rhythm of the room – notice how the horizontal blinds intersect with the relief lines on the walls.

A similar solution is shutters. The architect Oleg Klodt decided to make his own bathroom as similar as possible to a living room, so he covered the walls with wallpaper, and decorated the windows with folding shutters, as in the whole apartment.

A softer option - a combination of blinds and translucent curtains. Designer Helen Kucherova did not place the bath in front of floor-to-ceiling windows so as not to block the light coming from them, but, on the contrary, increased the amount of light with the help of a mirror panel, which actually added a couple more window openings to the bathroom.

And Natalya Maslova used only traditional curtains in her bathroom, just like in any other room of the house. They soften the partial wall tiling. Complements the space with a chandelier with details in the form of candles.

Another popular way to decorate bathroom windows is with Roman blinds. They (however, like blinds) can be attached to the wall, to the ceiling or to the window opening. A more elegant option is Austrian curtains. In Natalia Popova's project, frills support the interior in the style of Napoleon III, but they appear only when the curtains are pulled together.

If the windows and especially the views from them are too spectacular, then you can do without any curtains at all. Daria Mayer worked on the interior of the apartment on the second, "lordly" floor of a historic house on the corner of Nevsky and Malaya Konyushennaya and tried to preserve the light and air of the space as much as possible. And the YoDezeen team sought to connect everything with the “outside world”: when the space is located on the last two floors of a high-rise building, and the view from the panoramic windows opens onto Moscow City, it is impossible to do otherwise. Shy people can look at windows with “smart glass”, the light transmission of which can be adjusted depending on the situation.

Another case is the roof window. Its main property is to serve as a light opening, which is very useful in rooms with a low sloping ceiling. However, it can also be distinguished: Olga Maleva did it with the help of wooden frames, and Maria Makhonina and Alexandra Kazakovtseva from the MK-Interio architectural bureau finished the chamber bathrooms with wooden panels.

Windows with shutters. Photos of the best examples for you

Perhaps not everyone will believe that in addition to the usual curtains, there are many other window decorations.

Today we will prove to the readers of the Design Museum website that there are no less interesting, original and stylish ways of design.

We are talking about window shutters. Once they were used with a clear practical purpose, now they are used as a fashionable interior detail. We present to your attention twenty of the freshest and most interesting ideas.

1. Clean bathroom design

Snow-white gamma and natural wood - what could be simpler and more beautiful at the same time? The blazing white shutters let in the first rays of the sun into the room, as if a glazed crust is breaking.

2. Cafe style

If you do not want bulky curtains and tulle, then these blinds will suit your taste. They do not take up much space, giving the interior decoration charm and playful mood.

3. Get ready for adventure

Shutters in children's rooms complete the overall atmosphere of joy, play and fun. In the early morning they open the whole world outside the window for young explorers. A juicy red color "sounds" life-affirming and positive.

4. Country style

Window decoration does not have to be rich and pretentious. Sometimes the ingenuous wooden shutters on the windows, which can be found in old estates and estates, cause admiration. The effect of charm is achieved due to the contrast of simplicity, a certain roughness of untreated wood and exquisite armchairs.

5. Visual expansion of space

The fact that the shutters take up a lot of space is an erroneous opinion. With the right approach, they, on the contrary, can visually enlarge the window space. In the photo, the impression is created due to the almost complete match in tone with the walls.

6. Black and white contrast

Neat shutters that do not fit the windows, but only half close them, stand out due to the color contrast.

7. Like in a barn

At first glance, this does not sound at all, and hardly anyone wants to have barn-like windows in their house. However, looking at the photo, we can say with confidence that they are “in place”, and their stylistic affiliation is emphasized by the bathroom in the spirit of the 18-19th century.

8. Country Charm

Plain wooden doors made of hinged planks. The style is emphasized by plants in flowerpots that stand on the windowsill.

9. Cozy corner

Soft window sill, large window and small shutters - the perfect place for privacy. Perhaps everyone dreams of this.

10. Interesting shape

Who said that only two shutters are required for one window opening? Let them be four, but small. As if in a dollhouse, they neatly fold to the sides. The real charm of the houses of the European aristocracy.

11. Vintage

Old noble houses and estates carefully keep the memory of the past. Is it worth intervening in a cozy atmosphere? Therefore, many prefer retrostyle in the reconstruction of buildings.

12. Are you ready for a fairy tale?

The mysterious design of the shutters in the photo must have reminded many people of fairy tales, when all the action began with just such windows, opening up a magical world to the viewer.

13. Large and tall

This interior design is a prime example of how window sashes can visually enlarge your space, filling it with light and sunlight.

14. Rainbow mood

Shutters in cheerful colors are the perfect solution for a child's room. They are in harmony with the red and white gamut of the environment.

15. With a touch of nautical theme

It turns out that the shape does not always have to be traditional - rectangular or square - oval or round varieties are allowed. Observing such a design move, the first thing we remember is the portholes. The rich design of the bathroom is emphasized by a simple white frame and an original window.

16. Traditional

This variant reflects the most familiar concept. Wooden shutters in a neutral shade complement the classic design of the room in the best way.

17. Stylish elements

If the windows above the bed were closed, then at first glance it would not be clear where the shutters are. The original design idea balanced the romantic and feminine atmosphere of the room.

18. Bahama Breeze

The energy of the sea and the sun could not but affect the interior. Original shutters will decorate not only the bungalow, but also the children's room or living room in your home.
