Shelf lighting ideas
Ideas and products for Shelf & Joinery Lighting
Here we help you understand how to use shelf and joinery lights within your project and take a look different application ideas and how to position the lights. A great architectural lighting tool, shelf lighting can add an indirect softness and at the same time create a feature in the room. Think of shelves as a window in the room or even like a wall light.
-
1.Front lighting
The simplest option is to front light your shelves with a Contour LED strip. This requires a simple down stand on the shelf. Sometimes you can use bare LED tape on a heat sink however using a visible or reflective metal extrusion is usually the best solution. The choice depends on the detail and finishing of the shelf. This solution provides a very even light suitable for most objects. The Vorsa Dot track mounted flood and spotlight is also an effective solution for front lighting in shelves and joinery. With multiple different optics, it allows lighting to be tailored according to the display.
-
2.Back lighting
A different concept for your shelf lighting would be to back light the shelf by using a Contour LED strip. You would conceal this with either a gap at the back of the shelf or a small upstand. This effect adds depth and is particularly successful when there are a combination of objects, particularly glass and books as the light shines through. This is very dramatic when lighting objects but works less well with a full library of books.
-
3.Individual shelf lighting
Miniature spotlights can be used to create focused pools of light onto specific objects as part of your shelf lighting scheme. This works to good effect when the shelves are divided into small sections with a single feature in each. Here the miniature Lucca 30 downlight lights each individual vase making them sparkle. The Minim is also a fantastic solution for discreet downlighting within shelving and can be used for recessed task and display lighting.
-
4. Positioning
The positioning depends on various factors such as; the reflective nature of the surfaces being lit, the colour of the surfaces, the object of the illumination. The lighting should be positioned so that it is always concealed from view and does not cause any unwanted shadows. Here with have used the low glare Etta Eyelid which not only provides task light on the work surface below but also illuminates the objects.
-
5.Get the look
Contour HD24 or HD27 can be used for most shelf lighting applications. It works best when used in conjunction with an aluminium profile. For focused spots, a miniature Lucca 30 downlight can be used which requires minimal recess depth or for a larger spread of light choose the Etta Eyelid. The Way We Play
1. Natural light
By placing the dining table in front of the windows, you solve the problem of lighting at least during daylight hours. Not everyone, however, can boast of an abundance of natural light: in this Stockholm apartment, large windows are left over from the garment factory that was previously located here.

3. Uniform illumination

4. Skylights
The absence or lack of conventional windows can be compensated for by skylights. In addition, they let in up to two times more light than conventional vertical windows in the wall.
Town House Interiors
5. Light over
The main rule when choosing a roof window or windows is that the area of glazing should be at least 10% of the area of the illuminated room. That is, if the window area is 0.9 sq.m, then it will be enough to illuminate a room of 9 sq.m. Philippe Starck for Kartell

6. Multiply light
To double the lighting in the dining area, place a mirror in front of the lamp, as in this house in Germany.

Wardrobe Lighting Options: Lighting Ideas Inside and Above
Wardrobes cannot always be placed in the most lit place, often you have to find the right things by touch, constantly rearranging them. To cope with such a problem is quite simple - if you organize the backlight. In Europe, furniture without additional lighting is almost never produced, many domestic manufacturers also add this function as an additional one to storage systems.
Photo: pinterest.com
What is the backlight for?
Wardrobe auxiliary lighting has a function not only practical but also aesthetic. Therefore, such furniture has many significant advantages:
- cabinet filling light saves time by helping you find everything you need faster;
- device helps to maintain a constant order in the closet;
- if you organize overhead lighting near the mirror, it will be even more convenient to use the closet;
- decorative elements improve the design, make the interior more original.
Lighting can be mounted in any wardrobe: classic, compartment, kitchen, shoe cabinet.
Photo: pinterest.com
The choice of lighting
The furniture market offers several lighting options that are completed with storage systems. Buyers have plenty to choose from.
Halogen cabinet lighting
One of the most common types of lighting is halogen. The design is made of halogen lamps. This incandescent lamp is filled with fumes that release bromine or iodine. Gas prolongs its service life, increasing heating up to 500 degrees. Such lamps are very bright, but this can not always be considered an advantage. A hot lamp can affect the material of the cabinet (deteriorate the appearance, increase the evaporation of formaldehyde resins and other harmful substances that may be present in the composition). For this reason, it is impractical to embed such lamps. If you take the design in hand, indelible spots remain on the lamp. Even slight drops in the network affect the sensitivity of the device. If you decide on a halogen backlight, mount it on the visor in the form of overhead lights.
Photo: pinterest.com
LED cabinet lighting
This type of lighting has more advantages: high quality, safety, economical energy consumption, durability. The system is a semiconductor device with electron-hole junctions that generate light by passing electricity through them. This type will appeal to environmentally responsible consumers. Products are produced in two types: a set of several light bulbs or in the form of a lamp with a linear arrangement of diodes. Unlike alternative lighting options, LEDs practically do not heat up, they can be safely used inside a wardrobe made from any wood analogs (not excluding chipboard). Neither overheating nor formaldehyde should be feared.
Photo: pinterest.com
Fluorescent backlight
This type of backlight is rarely used today. Usually it is mounted to illuminate a place in front of a mirror or on a hanger bar. Discharge illumination is a light source that generates ultraviolet light waves by discharging current through mercury vapor. They are transformed into a luminous flux with the help of a phosphor. The main problem of such lamps is safety, because the presence of mercury in case of damage to the device can seriously affect health. Mercury and its compounds are classified as substances of the first hazard class, so the disposal of used lamps is carried out by special companies involved in demercurization.

Cabinet lighting with LED strip
The strip looks like a flexible board with small diodes mounted on its contacts. For decorative purposes, this is one of the best types of finishes. The tape is sold in skeins of 5 m, you can buy any quantity, the main thing is to know exactly your needs. There are several options for the LED strip:
- self-adhesive tape can be easily attached to any substrate;
- waterproof version - the best solution for a bathroom cabinet;
- a multi-variant RGB tape is used for decorative design, it is convenient to alternate the color of the bulbs with the controller.
There is an option to suit every taste and need.
Photo: pinterest.com
Places for mounting the cabinet lighting
The part of the cabinet where the lamp should be mounted should be determined first. The option of installing the backlight depends on the purpose of the installation.
External lighting

Interior lighting

Switching methods
When choosing your lighting option, pay attention to the switch on and switch off options. The remote control, for example, can control the types of colors, the degree of brightness and other lighting characteristics. There is also a special controller for this purpose.
Motion sensor
Automatic control with motion sensors means that the light will turn on when you approach the wardrobe, and also if you try to open the door. After leaving, it turns off.
Switch
The light is turned on with a button. You can’t imagine a simpler way, but it’s inconvenient to constantly turn it on with your hands, especially if the wardrobe is often used.

Power options
Choose from two power options:
- Household power supply is a reliable source, but not always acceptable: you have to think about where to put the cable. In the absence of electricity, the backlight does not work.
- Autonomous power supply - a way when the lamps are charged from a battery or several batteries. The latter method is budgetary, the first is durable and reliable. Several LEDs can be charged with three batteries for at least six months.
- Cover for hinges. A latch with a pair of LEDs is put directly on the door hinge. It is powered by three GPA76 batteries. During the day, such a source may not be enough, but in the early morning you can see the contents of the closet. You can mount the overlay in a minute by putting it on the door hinge. Inside there is a vibration sensor that turns on the light when you touch the door handle.

Ways to install lighting devices
The backlight installation procedure requires concentration, so it is better to think over the installation scheme in advance. From the mains, you can run the cable in an open way, fixing it on the walls, or closed, using a cable channel.
After choosing the installation method, decide on the type of illumination. The mortise is inserted into the holes prepared in the visor and selected sections. For decoration, the tape is mounted on the facade of the cabinet. Overhead lighting is placed in the place where it is needed. It can be mounted in the form of a circle, square, oval, rectangle, triangle. If the lighting needs to be bright, use more powerful overhead lights. Mortise analogues can also be used as decor, but it is more difficult to embed them.

Installation process step by step - if you decide to do it yourself
If you have thought out the installation scheme with a mark of batteries, switches, lamps and stocked up with the necessary materials and tools, you can get down to business. Of the tools you may need:
- drill with attachments,
- screwdriver,
- stationery knife,
- furniture stapler,
- soldering iron,
- scissors,
- pliers,
- cutting pliers.
Before installation, it is worth checking how the cabinet with lighting will look like - a bad choice of place can ruin the whole furniture design.
- Measure a suitable piece of tape and cut it according to the markings on it. It is not recommended to make wiring with a solid tape - the consumption of electricity increases, the service life decreases.
- Transfer the diagram to the cabinet frame, marking the locations for the switch, power supply, etc.
