Concrete is quite simply a blend of aggregates – sand and gravel or crushed stone – bonded together in a dense, stone-like mass by hardened cement. 

This material has made possible incredible structures and surfaces. It is the cement that gives concrete its dull-gray appearance, and so the secret with in-situ garden paving is to remove the cement from the surface before it sets.

Paving slabs are one of the most common garden materials for landscaping around a pool. Paving or pavers are readily available as individual blocks, in a wide range of shapes, colors and sizes that can be laid in several pattern configurations. You can also buy specialist kits, such as circles, for patios. 

Mostly made from pre-cast concrete or reconstituted stone, pavers can also be used for garden paths, terraces, steps and patios. They are also ideal for adding a large expanse in the same color/material. A matching path and patio area can be used to lead the eye through the garden or to an adjacent pool house. 

What's more, pavers are mostly affordable, readily available and fairly straightforward to lay. Small pavers can be teased into curves, tight corners and organic shapes, and there are a good selection of edgings and borders available to complete the look. 

Be aware that large pavers will need cutting. Tailor your design to limit the number of cuts at planning stage, and hire a slab and walling block splitter to ensure a neat job.

This Mumbai-based house makes an ambiguous impression. On the one hand, architectural confusion makes it difficult to perceive the house as an integral structure and, frankly, it causes bewilderment. On the other hand, it turns out that numerous corners, tunnels and transitions are due to the deconstructivist concept of the project authors. And as you know, even the most defiant creative whim has a reasonable explanation - if the theoretical base is chosen correctly. But in this case, we are not talking about architectural experiments, but about how the narrow ribbon of the pool, encircling the facade, is organically woven into a strange structure and, like a medium, builds the “broken” architecture into the serene surrounding landscape.

Water is the first thing that comes to mind when looking at this eco-house in Bangladesh. An ardent love of nature has awakened in homeowners a desire to blur the boundaries between home and environment. However, solid concrete walls cannot be easily washed away, and then water came to the rescue. Placed in a conditional pool-channel, it washes the house from two sides, creating an optical illusion of a small bewitching flood. From a practical point of view, the presence of the water element greatly facilitates the life of the inhabitants of the subtropical climate.

This example shows how easily and naturally water matter can flow from the interior to the exterior and merge almost flush with the surrounding panorama of the lake Furnas. Through simple manipulations with lifting doors, the dining area turns into a covered veranda with a swimming pool, which, in turn, decorates the lower level - the relaxation area - with a narrow window into the water depths.

Usually, a variety of furniture or decorative solutions are used for this, but in this minimalist house in the vicinity of Milan, the "separator" of the space has become - no less - a glass cube leading to an underground pool. The cube, dramatically illuminated from different sides by point sources, is painted in the blue colors of water and casts a shimmering and slightly otherworldly glow on the laconic walls of the interior.
