Can you put paneling on the ceiling?

Many period properties come with existing, traditional paneled ceiling designs, often made out of solid wood.

Paneling designs can be put onto new, empty ceiling spaces to mirror this classic effect.

One thing to consider when putting new paneling on a ceiling is the weight of different panel types and if these will work with the structure of your home.

What kind of paneling can be used on ceilings?

There is a range of different paneling styles for your ceiling, from traditional wood designs to more cost effective options.

Wooden paneling can be installed onto a ceiling in an existing property, however not all panel designs and materials are suitable for the ceiling due to their weight and size.

Using options such as MDF, foam and vinyl are an easy way to add lightweight paneling designs to your ceiling space.

Ceiling panel - what it is, types and applications

Plain plain ceilings can look very beautiful, but many people strive to give the design of ceilings a certain personality by decorating this surface in different ways. One of them is a decorative panel mounted on the ceiling.

What is it

According to the basic definition, a panel is a picture or its fragment fixed on the surface rigidly, without the possibility of removal. If the panel is mounted on the ceiling, then most often it is a picture, bas-relief or other similar decoration that occupies part of the surface and is often framed or highlighted in other ways.

You can make such a decoration yourself, with a little imagination and effort. However, everything here will depend on the material of the ceiling structure. If your house has ordinary painted or plastered floors, then there are no restrictions on the choice of material and type of decoration, and in the case of suspended or tension structures, the choice of decor will be limited.

Moreover, it is possible to decorate a stretch fabric only at the stage of its production using photo printing or by combining different types of fabric in one design. Naturally, it will be impossible to do this on your own. It is easier with hanging compositions, but the weight of the decor will be of great importance.

Varieties of this decor

When making this decoration yourself, you can use the materials that are currently available to you. However, on sale you can find ready-made products that differ from home-made ones in higher quality. For example, a decorative panel for ceiling mounting from royal decor.

This decoration combines two functions at once: it serves as an excellent surface decoration and at the same time is a beautiful ceiling rosette for a chandelier. The choice of such decorative elements is very wide - you can pick up a round, square rectangular panel of different colors and heights.

However, these products are very expensive. There are more affordable options made from inexpensive foam or polyurethane. Such decorations are white decorative elements of various shapes, which, after installation, can be painted in any color yourself.

Another option is a PVC ceiling panel. This is a kind of composite picture printed using the photo printing method on several plastic panels. Putting them together during the installation process, we get the whole image. You can mount the panels on glue, as they are quite light.

However, there are several nuances - such plastic panels are not always suitable for installation on the ceiling. The fact is that the dimensions of the paintings along the length, in most cases, are equal to the size of the panels, and this is 2.7 meters, which does not always fit well into the overall design of the room. The second feature is the plot. In most cases, such products are intended for walls and appropriate image subjects are chosen - landscapes, images of cities, and so on. For overlays, floral themes or images of the sky with clouds are better suited.

Separately, one can single out such panels that are not sold ready-made, but, nevertheless, you have to pay for them - gypsum products created by the master directly on the spot. These are exclusive jewelry and their cost will be very rather big. However, such decor is guaranteed to be unique and best fit into the existing design of the room.

If you make something like this yourself, then only your imagination and the size of the budget will be the limitation. You can even make plaster moldings yourself, however, you will need the talent of an artist and sculptor. The same can be said about painting ceilings with paints - if you know how to draw, then you can decorate the ceiling with a picture with your own hands.

Examples

Some can afford to buy even the most expensive ready-made jewelry, and some lack ideas on how to make such decoration themselves. In any case, it never hurts to look at already completed examples of such finishes. A few photos below show what different types of panels look like, mounted on the ceiling or painted on it.
