A child's room is his or her special place, so if you're thinking of giving it a facelift, use your imagination to create an inspiring and fun environment for them. While putting a new coat of paint on the walls can work wonders, don't forget about the furniture in the room. Whether it is a table and chair set, rocking chair, bed, desk or dresser, painting your child's furniture is a simple and creative way to give the room a makeover.
Step 1: Think About Color
Start by thinking about the room's color scheme. If you're painting the room's walls, plan how the room colors and furniture colors will complement each other. If you're leaving the walls as is, you can still add zing with cool, colorful furniture. Just be sure the colors complement or contrast in the right way. Choose colors by knowing how they affect moods and perceptions:
- Green. The color of nature, green is said to reinforce self-esteem and suggest hope, restfulness and calmness.
- Blue. Shades of blue, like the ocean and the sky, evoke feelings of calm, tranquility and spirituality, so they're good choices for a restful bedroom.
- Red. Used as an accent to neutral colors, red can add life to a kid's room.
- Yellow. Cheerful and dynamic, yellow is a great choice to brighten and warm any room. It's also said to be the color of intellectuals.
- White. White represents peace, faith, joy, cleanliness and purity. It reflects light, so it can make a room appear bright, cool and spacious. But it's also the hardest room color to keep clean with little ones around.
- Purple. Various shades of purple evoke different feelings. Children typically respond to the energy of bright purple.
Step 2: Find an Appropriate Workspace
If possible, remove the furniture from the room and work in another space, such as a garage, workshop or similar area. Work in a well-ventilated area since fumes from paint and paint thinner, etc., are toxic and can be very potent in an enclosed area. Working in an open garage or outside offers the best ventilation.
Never paint near extreme heat or an open flame. Paints, stripping chemicals and stains are highly flammable and can ignite.
Step 3: Prepare the Surface
If you need to do minor repairs to the furniture, do so before you start anything else on the project. All it takes is a little extra attention and elbow grease. Even if you're not very handy, you should be able to repair a dresser or crib with a hammer, a screwdriver, some nails or screws and some wood glue.
Once repairs have been made, it's time to refinish. Make sure your refinishing area is dry and dust-free — water and dirt can ruin fresh coats of primer and paint. Use masking tape to secure newspaper or a large drop cloth or tarp to the floor or ground to protect it from spills or splashes. Remove drawers, doors and any hardware from the furniture before you start.
Step 4: Remove Old Finish
Remove the old finish by sanding with a medium-low grit sandpaper. Be sure to sand along the grain of the wood — any swirl marks caused by sanding will stand out when you stain.
Remove all of the finish and smooth out any imperfections in the wood. Sand carefully by hand around decorative details and curved areas.
To remove finishes quickly from a large item, you may want to use a belt sander — but be careful not to damage the item by sanding too deeply. Finish by smoothing the entire piece down with medium-grit sandpaper.
Step 5: Prime It
Prime the furniture with True Value EasyCare Ultra Premium Interior Primer/Sealer tinted the same color as the paint you're going to use. This will make it easier because you can use fewer coats of paint. Priming is especially important if the furniture has never been painted or if the piece was poorly finished before you started. Apply the primer with a medium-sized brush or small roller. Let it dry completely.
Step 6: Start Painting
Using another medium-sized brush or small roller, apply True Value EasyCare Ultra Premium Interior Paint onto the furniture using even strokes. Cover the entire surface. Do not apply the paint too thickly or it will run. If you apply too much, wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. It is always better to do several light coats instead of one thick one. Let the paint dry in between coats.
It's best not to use the furniture for at least a week. The paint will appear dry but can be easily smudged or scratched. Also, don't replace the hardware until after the paint has completely dried.
If you're painting your furniture, now's the time to be as creative as you want. Because you're creating a nursery, you may want to use bright, fun colors. Or create a calm and comforting space for your little one. It's up to you.
When painting children's furniture, it's important to choose a low-VOC paint like True Value EasyCare Ultra Premium Interior Paint.
These high-quality paint products have reduced amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Compared to traditional latex paints, these products release fewer fumes. Low-VOC primers and paints are applied the same way as conventional paints and primers and cost about the same as most manufacturers' top-of-the-line paints. They can be cleaned and disposed of easily without the use of strong solvents.
You're done! Take a step back and admire your work.

Paint for children's wooden furniture
Repairs in an apartment or a country house require a serious approach. Each room is special, it has its own tasks that cannot be ignored. The bathroom should be protected from moisture, the kitchen should be comfortable and easy to clean, the living room should be spacious and comfortable.
Children's room is both a bedroom and a living room, and a place for games and studies: the functions of the room change after the little owner or hostess.
Child safe paint
Children are growing rapidly. Just yesterday, the baby could only sleep, eat and scream, and now he learns the world himself, shows character, grows up, then goes to school and continues to grow. A child's room is a place where he wants to return, his own corner in a vast world. Therefore, it must meet his needs and help development.
Completely renovating the interior and acquiring new furniture every season is very costly and not very wise. It is much more profitable and convenient to change the appearance of an already lived-in space: from an ordinary rearrangement of furniture, to decor and complete repainting. Renovating a nursery with an older child is a sure way to have fun and interesting time with the whole family. nine0003
In this article we will tell you how to choose the right materials, what and how best to paint and where to buy paint for children's wood furniture.
Basic requirements for children's paint
In order for joint work to bring only joy and a pleasing to the eye result, the choice of paints and varnishes should be approached with particular care.
High-quality and safe paint for children's furniture meets the following requirements:
- Non-toxic and does not emit volatile organic substances into the atmosphere. nine0022
- Odorless, non-allergenic
- Water based
- Provides a durable, washable finish
- Long lasting color
- Enables future repainting
- Easy to use
What are volatile organic compounds (VOC or VOC)?
These are substances which evaporate at ambient temperature. The high content of volatile compounds makes materials toxic and flammable. Harmful substances pollute the atmosphere and destroy the ozone layer. They accumulate in the human body and cause allergies, headaches and diseases of the internal organs. nine0003
Range overview: what to choose and what not to
Materials based on solvent, varnish or drying oil (alkyd enamels and oil paints) release hazardous substances into the air. They are harmful to health and the environment, causing headaches and allergies. Therefore, such paint for furniture for children is completely unsuitable.
For interior decoration of living spaces, especially children's rooms, we recommend paints and varnishes that use water as a thinner. nine0003
Water-dispersion and water-based emulsions
The main advantages of water-based emulsions are that they are vapor-permeable, non-toxic and almost odorless. You should not consider them for painting children's furniture, they are more suitable for ceilings or other similar surfaces. Because water-dispersion ones exist only in white, and water-based ones are washed off with water and are completely not resistant to washing.
Colored Acrylics
This is one of the most popular water-based children's furniture paints. A rich palette of colors, minimal toxicity, durable coating and availability are significant advantages of such materials. However, they have several significant drawbacks that play an important role in repainting. Firstly, they do not fit on some types of paints, as well as on glossy, varnished and polished surfaces. This is the property of all water-based emulsions and dispersions. Secondly, for high-quality painting, a primer and special processing of furniture and other wooden products are required. nine0003
Water-based latex and acrylate
Polymer paints similar in properties to acrylic, but more flexible and durable.
To choose and buy safe water-based paint for children, carefully look at the symbols on the label and certificates of conformity.
Tikkurila and several other major manufacturers are launching sustainable interior paint lines. The packaging indicates that they have undergone special testing, comply with accepted standards for the content of volatile substances and are suitable for people with hypersensitivity. nine0003
Eco-friendly paints
All materials in our store are made from natural ingredients, so they do not emit volatile organic compounds at all. Mirabella paints are made from a mineral mixture, Annie Sloan is chalky, and Vernenskaya Manufactory is based on milk casein. Such paints are safe for health and the environment, dry quickly and do not smell. Therefore, they can be used by both pregnant women and children of any age.
The special formula of these materials makes it possible to paint complex surfaces: wood and wood derivatives (fibreboard, chipboard, chipboard), concrete and ceramics, plastic and glass. nine0003
In most cases no special surface preparation is required. No need to prime or remove an old layer of varnish or paint if it does not come off on its own.
The paint is suitable for painting children's furniture when it combines environmental friendliness, ease of use, a diverse palette of colors and a durable, wash-resistant finish.
You can choose and buy safe colored paint for wood in our catalog.
Features and capabilities
The possibilities of materials are limited only by your imagination. Quickly repaint the furniture or work together with the child? For such cases, the Mirabella paint and the Perfect Vernon line were specially created: a primer, a rich opaque paint and a durable coating in one can. It does not require any preliminary or finishing treatment and lays down on any surface. It is intuitive how to use it, so it is suitable for children and beginner decorators.
Turning a child's room into an old castle or aging the furniture artistically? Annie Sloan chalk paints and the Shabby product line allow you to use different styles and coloring techniques, create multi-layered textures. nine0003
Preserve the structure of wooden furniture but protect it? Natural varnishes and waxes, transparent and colored, are created just for this.
Refurbish? Chips and defects, lost elements are restored with the help of mastic.
Glitter and mother-of-pearl, slate, white or colored paints for children's furniture - in our catalog you will find what you need.
New ideas
We regularly hold workshops where you can learn unusual coloring techniques and try new materials. nine0003
Ornament
You can revitalize and update the nursery interior with bright color accents or ornaments.
You will need:
- Masking tape
- Stencil
- Paints, assorted colors
- Brushes or roller
Easy to make patterns: checkered, striped, rhombus or zigzag are done with masking tape. More complex patterns - using stencils, which you can purchase or make yourself. nine0003
Operation is extremely simple:
- The surface of the product must be dry, clean and free of grease
- Apply first base coat, let dry
- Apply tape or attach stencil
- Cover the selected area with another color
- Remove tape or stencil
Ombre
Gradient or ombre is a smooth transition from one color to another, from light to dark, without sharp boundaries between shades and tones. This coloring looks impressive both on the wall and on furniture with drawers. nine0003
In blue-green shades, you can draw a sea on the cabinet doors, and with white-pink colors you can turn a bedside table into a marshmallow cake. Colored water-based paint for a child will become an assistant in arranging his own room and embodying creative ideas.
Provence, shabby chic and artistic aging
Room for little princes and princesses with Provencal or Victorian furniture: calm pastel colors, floral motifs, artistic casualness and plenty of light and space. nine0003
There are many ways to age furniture appropriately. Here are some of them:
- Paint with light paint, cover with dark wax and sandpaper to create visible abrasions.
- Similarly, contrasting colors can be painted and vice versa: the base layer will be darker, and the next layer will be lighter. In order for the first layer to casually peek out from under the second, creating the illusion of many years of use, you need to remove part of the coating with a sponge or sandpaper. Scuffs naturally look where they appear from time to time: around handles, on the corners and bends of furniture. nine0022
- Use wax or lacquer as a top coat to protect the surface.
Decoupage elements
Diversify the interior of the nursery with the help of decoupage technique: the image is transferred from paper to the surface of wood, and then varnished for durability. Usually, special multilayer decoupage napkins are used for this, but you can also use old postcards or pictures with your child's favorite characters.
New staining techniques and safe materials make renovation a fun game to share with children. nine0003

How and with what to paint a baby crib: choosing a safe paint + painting instructions
One of the main tips for customizing a newly purchased crib or updating an old one is to paint it. But, when it comes to things for a child, parents often ask themselves: how to paint a crib? After all, the coating should be safe and environmentally friendly, and preferably without a strong smell. In the article we will talk about paints and varnishes that correspond to all these points. nine0003

There are several points that you should pay attention to when choosing paints and varnishes.
- Security. This means that the composition should not contain any compounds and substances that, when evaporated, can cause allergic reactions and irritations.
- The packaging must indicate that the material complies with international standards for use in children's toys and furniture. In particular, it is the European certificate EN 71.
- Crib safe paint must be based on water. And this is very important. Not drying oil and not a solvent, because when dried, they still contain impurities of not very useful substances. In addition, they have a sharp strong smell that lasts for a long time.
- Strength and elasticity is another selection criterion. The product must withstand not only numerous attempts to bite or lick the components of the structure, but also washing and numerous rubbing with a rag. nine0022

Several types of paints and varnishes meet the above criteria. Let's consider each type in detail.
Acrylic-polyurethane varnish
This is a water-dispersion composition intended for painting furniture and objects made of wood, MDF, chipboard and even plastic. It is easy to apply and dries quickly. It also has good elasticity and wear resistance. nine0003
Available in both tinted and clear finishes, in case you want to highlight the wood grain. The same applies to the degree of gloss: there are matte, semi-matte, semi-gloss and glossy materials.
Acrylic enamel
Not all acrylic enamels are suitable for children's furniture and toys, so please check the certificates of conformity.
Compounds that are recommended for such work are characterized by increased elasticity, water repellency, and UV resistance. They also come in varying degrees of sheen, from glossy to matte finishes. And easily tinted in the selected shade. nine0003
Acrylic Lacquer
This is an option if you don't want to tint the wood, but only emphasize its natural color.
Be careful: water-dispersion acrylic lacquer is also not always suitable for children's furniture.
Certified formulations dry quickly to a thin, clear film with a good glossy finish.
Acrylic paint
Acrylic paint is made on the basis of water-based compositions. Among its advantages: environmental friendliness, no smell, good hiding power, which means low consumption, good elasticity and a variety of colors. nine0003
Manufacturers usually offer a white base. To get the desired shade, you need to add color pigment to it. This can be done at home too. Among the disadvantages of acrylic coatings: high cost relative to similar materials.
Latex paint
Another emulsion based on latex polymers. It is stronger than acrylic, and also more elastic and wear-resistant. Accordingly, the price is higher.

Oil wax
This is a novelty offered by European manufacturers. Maslovosk is created on the basis of natural linseed and soybean oils, as well as vegetable waxes. The oil impregnates the wood, fills its pores, and the wax protects the surface, it has water-repellent properties.
Don't forget: primer
Before applying the final coat on the product, it is recommended to prime the surface. For children's furniture, an acrylic-based water-dispersion primer is suitable. It will fill the pores of the material, improve the adhesion (adhesion) of the coating to the surface, and, importantly, reduce paint consumption. If there are small defects on the tree, the primer will even them out. The method of application depends on the manufacturer: some allow the work of a roller or brush, others recommend spraying. nine0003

Painting a new product
All you need is a sponge, roller and brush. A sponge and a brush are needed for staining small parts, a roller for large ones. nine0003
- The highest quality painting - in parts. Therefore, the first thing to do is to disassemble the crib into its components.
- Before painting, parts should be sanded with fine to medium grit sandpaper. This will ensure reliable adhesion of the coating to the surface.
- Remove dust, wipe all components with a damp cloth, allow to dry.
- If you plan to tint the product, you must first apply a primer. nine0021 If you plan to apply varnish, then pre-treatment is carried out with a stain. It will protect the tree from moisture and decay.
- Primer will usually pick up the fluff and fibers of the wood, so re-sand the surface if necessary.
- The paint can then be applied in 2 coats. Pay attention to the drying time, it is important not to rush, but not to delay the application of the next.
- Wait until completely dry and collect the elements. nine0121
- Disassemble the structure into its constituent elements.
- Remove the old coating. To do this, you can use a spatula, building hair dryer or chemical washes. But nail polish removers are toxic, you need to work with them very carefully. If possible, it is better to do it in a simple mechanical way. nine0021 If there are large chips and cracks, they must be primed. Suitable polymer putty on wood. It is odorless, eco-friendly and dries quickly.
- After the putty has dried, the product is ready for painting. The technology is the same: first you need to apply a layer of primer, and then two or three layers of paint.
Renewal of the old
Most likely, you have a product already covered with varnish or paint. In this case, the procedure is as follows:
The cot can be used from about the third day. But keep in mind that it will still smell a little, so it is advisable to calculate the work based on a longer drying time. The paint will completely harden within seven to ten days. nine0003

The most obvious decoration option is to choose white. It will perfectly fit into the interior in any color scheme. This is important for those who have not yet decided what color the nursery will be. In addition, chips and bite marks are not so noticeable on white if the child tries the railings and rods “by the tooth”.
Another popular option is to leave the natural texture of the wood. Such products are especially relevant for fans of the Scandinavian and modern style. Their advantages are the same as those of white models: chips are invisible, especially on light wood. Products made of dark wood or covered with dark stain are not suitable for every nursery, but they look very impressive in the photo. nine0003

A win-win option when you've already painted the walls or wallpapered your baby's room is to choose a flooring to match or close to them. For example, if the room is decorated in blue, then the bed can be dark blue, in lemon - bright yellow, and brown, green, red - any shade to your taste will suit beige interiors. Bright colors attract kids' attention. And, if it seems to you that this decision is too bold, we are in a hurry to dissuade: furniture in rich colors will surely interest the child. nine0003
The combination of different shades is also not an option for everyone. However, these beds look very interesting. A more relaxed design: white with a natural wood texture, but you should not be limited to this combination. If there are bright colors in the room, you can try more decisive combinations: white with pink, green, blue. Or pick up contrasting pairs: blue and lemon, blue and pink, and so on. Usually the base is painted in one color, and the rods in another.
If you are ready to experiment with technique, try to make an ombre effect on the railing: a color stretch. The choice of color here also depends only on your desire. But for such painting you will need a sprayer, we do not recommend using a brush or even a sponge, the result may not be very accurate. It is important that the tone on adjacent bars is evenly distributed.
