DAY 1 - LONDON
Our tour of England’s green and pleasant land will begin in the country’s iconic capital. After meeting the group at our London hotel, we’ll get to know one another better over a delicious welcome meal. Accommodation: The Wellington by Blue Orchid (or similar) (D)
DAY 2 LONDON – IGHTHAM MOTE – SCOTNEY CASTLE – TUNBRIDGE WELLS Our tour of England’s green and pleasant land will begin at one of the most unique manor houses in Kent: Ightham Mote. This medieval house dates back over 700 years, and can only be reached via an ancient stone bridge that stretches over its very own moat. This afternoon we'll visit the charming Scotney Castle Garden and Estate. Scotney is not one but two houses. At the top of the hill is the new house, designed in Elizabethan style. At the bottom of the valley are the romantic ruins of a medieval castle and moat. The moated 14th century medieval castle and landscape of Scotney together make this one of England's most romantic places. The view from the Bastion, just below the formal terraces of the "new" Scotney Castle, takes in the glorious colors of Ghent azaleas in late spring. This is the focal point of the celebrated gardens featuring spectacular displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and kalmia in September/June. Brilliant displays of calico bush (Kalmia latifolia),enhance wonderful walks through 770 acre estate. Tonight, there’s a welcome dinner on the agenda. (D) Accommodation: The Spa Hotel (or similar)
DAY 3 TUNBRIDGE WELLS – SISSINGHURST CASTLE – GREAT DIXTER – TUNBRIDGE WELLS
At Sissinghurst, a National Trust property, you see the most beautiful garden in England, created by Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicholson. Next is the aromatic garden around a slender brick-built castle tower - Sissinghurst is surely the best known and most copied garden in the world. Sissinghurst is more than a garden. It is a garden in the ruin of an Elizabethan house, set in the middle of its own woods, streams and farmland and with long views on all sides across the fields and meadows of the Kentish landscape. When Harold Nicolson, the writer and diplomat, and Vita Sackville-West, poet, novelist and gardener, first came here in 1930, Sissinghurst was dripping in its own inheritance; it had been a medieval manor house and was visited by Queen Elizabeth in the 16th century before falling into ruins and being mistreated for nearly 300 years. Then: we’ll swap sculpted layouts for a naturalistic approach to planting at Great Dixter. Here, we’ll tour the old timber-framed house that was home to famous British gardener Christopher Lloyd – and explore the gardens that were his pride and joy. (B) Accommodation: The Spa Hotel (or similar)
DAY 4 TUNBRIDGE WELLS – HEVER CASTLE – RHS GARDEN WISLEY – WINDSOR
After breakfast in Tunbridge Wells, we’ll make tracks to the award-winning gardens of Hever Castle – the childhood home of Henry VIII’s second queen, Anne Boleyn. This afternoon will see us wandering tranquil RHS Garden Wisley, taking in the sounds of the water flowing through the rock garden and relaxing in the Alpine Meadow. The RHS Bicentenary Glasshouse, a huge cathedral-like glass structure covers an area equal in size to 10 tennis courts and rise to 12m (40ft) in height. It will have three climatic zones, recreating tropical, moist-temperate and dry-temperate habitats. Wisley Garden offers wooded slopes with masses of rhododendrons and azaleas, wild daffodils and an alpine meadow - British gardening at its best in all aspects. This is the 'Mecca' to many gardeners. The garden delights and inspires in any season of the year. It is full of ideas and information. There is always part of the garden at its best. The shop offers as large a collection of books on gardening as anywhere in the world. Here is a wonderful chance to buy gifts to take home.Rich in history and royal tradition, Windsor will be our final stop of the day. (B,D)
DAY 5 WINDSOR – THE SAVILL GARDEN – WINDSOR
What better way to spend the day than discovering Windsor’s regal highlights? First, we’ll visit the Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park. As we walk through the themed gardens, be sure to keep an eye out for an array of rare plants from around the world! After some free time, an afternoon tea cruise awaits us back in Windsor. (B)

This afternoon, we’ll return to London – where we’ll look forward to the excitement of the days to come. (B)

It September be the last day of the tour, but there’s still time to enjoy some more English treasures before we say goodbye. This morning we’ll take a stroll around the splendid Kew Gardens. The palm house, a jaw-dropping example of Victorian engineering, is sure to add a final flourish to that holiday photo album.
