The kitchen is the heart of the house: traditionally, this is where the whole family gathers at a common table and receives guests. But in typical apartments, the kitchen footage is small, and to make it visually more spacious, you can use light colors in the design.

In the article we will talk about the pros and cons of such a design, the rules for combining light shades with other colors, the features of light facades, walls, ceilings, floors, apron, countertops. And about what interior styles light shades will look advantageous. nine0003

Features of the light range

Where there is not enough natural light, light shades are not a whim, but a necessity. The bright kitchen looks neat, creates a feeling of cleanliness, it is pleasant to cook on it, the main thing is not to overdo it and not make it cold, sterile white. And for this you can use delicate or, conversely, “loud” color accents.

Light shades make the space lighter, add air. Heavenly inspiration project, designer Tatyana Krygina nine0002 Brightness can be added using textiles, dishes, paintings, mirrors, trim elements, furniture fittings, any decor. The thoughtful geometry of contrasting lines will help to make monochrome interiors more diverse.

White

The dominance of white in the kitchen is a bold decision for lovers of freedom. This color not only expands the space. White is the perfect backdrop for experimentation.

White in this kitchen is the background color, contrasting and bright details are perfectly combined with it. The combination of black and white is a win-win gamma for a modern-style kitchen. Interior in black and white "Law of Refraction", designed by Helen and Michael Miroshkin nine0016

White is whimsical, such a kitchen is the most difficult to maintain in perfect order. If it is not intended as a “museum”, and it is planned to cook and eat in this room, you should choose matte facades and muted shades - they are not as demanding in care as glossy ones.

Beige

Natural color that goes well with natural shades - gray, olive, light and dark wood. Bright details in a beige kitchen - in decor, textiles and furniture - are also acceptable. nine0003 A harmonious combination of natural soothing shades - creamy beige and creamy white. The pale blue upholstery of the chairs looks expressive against such a background. Apartment project in Mitino, designer Natalia Preobrazhenskaya

Grey

Another base color that is easy to "make friends" with almost any other. Everyone knows that gray has at least 50 shades - choosing your own is not a big deal.

Light yellow nine0013

Depending on the chosen style, yellow goes well with white, gray and gold. The most neutral and versatile option, perhaps, is the shade of ivory. It is often chosen for classical style projects. But the palette of yellow is actually much richer - you can choose a brighter, sunny shade.

Yellow is a bright color that can be risky. It is imperative to test the selected shade under different lighting options, otherwise you can achieve the opposite effect, and the kitchen will be gloomy. A yellow kitchen is an experiment that not everyone can do on their own, you should consult a designer. nine0003

light green

If white and gray seem boring, green is a great fresh option. There are many shades: from mint to light olive. An interesting effect can be achieved by combining light kitchen sets and accent decor.

Finishes and materials

The general principle of choosing materials, regardless of color, is resistance to moisture, temperature extremes and various types of pollution. nine0003

facades

They play a major role in the color design of the interior. The main materials are chipboard and MDF, covered with a special film or painted with durable paints in the desired color. It is not necessary to choose one shade for all surfaces: if the wall cabinets are light, the floor cabinets can be dark, this will not affect the overall perception.

Facades made of natural wood are beautiful and environmentally friendly, but they are expensive. An alternative is veneer, a thin layer of natural wood. Such facades look good, practical and affordable. nine0003

Apron

Ceramic tiles, glass, special polymer panels or a more status option - marble - as an apron look great in interiors of different styles and are highly durable. You can not make a special apron, but simply paint the wall with special paint for kitchens. If the furniture is light, it is better to choose a bright apron, and vice versa - the contrast will help avoid the feeling that the room is “overloaded” with furniture.

The color of the apron can be any - close in tone to the furniture, contrasting or bright accent. With white furniture, sea-green coatings are perfectly combined. Eco-minimalist apartment with city view, designed by Dreams Come True Studio nine0012 table top

When choosing a material, you need to pay attention to durability and practicality, because countertops in the kitchen get the biggest load. In addition to the popular stone and wood options, an interesting solution is steel. A light countertop should be of high quality - cheap porous materials absorb dirt, it is not so easy to remove wine and fruit stains from them.

Finishing the floor with porcelain stoneware, and the countertops and tables with marbled artificial stone is spectacular and practical. The interior of the apartment in a modern style, designer Nadezhda Lashku nine0002 Finishing with porcelain stoneware, ceramic tiles or mosaics provides more opportunities for experimenting with color and ornaments. A traditional and rather simple solution, but keep in mind that light-colored tile joints are not so easy to keep in perfect condition. It is better to choose a grout with antibacterial additives.

Walls

The non-working area can be pasted over with washable wallpaper, this will facilitate cleaning. Another option is water-repellent paint, which can be tinted to match the color of the facades. A light wall covering will expand the space, add air, and you can choose any furniture. nine0003 The blue wall borders the kitchen area and beautifully emphasizes the snow-white facades. Project of an apartment with teenage children, design studio PROTENA

Ceiling

Most often in new buildings there is either a stretch ceiling or a complete lack of decoration. The first option is valued for the speed of installation, the ability to choose colors and relatively easy maintenance. Designers love the "naked" concrete ceiling - it has its own brutal truth. But concrete in any case will need to be coated with a protective varnish or other impregnation. nine0003

A universal solution is a white ceiling. However, in a kitchen where there is occasional smoke and where grease and other contaminants accumulate on surfaces, the paint will darken rather quickly and the ceiling will need to be renewed periodically.

In order for the “bare” ceiling to look aesthetically pleasing, communications must be perceived as part of the decor and laid neatly. Apartment project "Mazanka Apartment", designer Sergey Makhno

Floor

During cooking, something inevitably falls on the floor and spills. And the dishes have an unpleasant property to beat. The floor covering must withstand these tests with confidence, and the consequences must be easily eliminated. Light-colored flooring in the kitchen is beautiful, but it is important to pay attention to the performance of the material. It should not absorb dirt and accumulate dust. nine0003

The best option in terms of practicality and price is linoleum. Laminate and quartz vinyl successfully imitate wood and are easy to use. Traditional, beautiful and reliable flooring for the kitchen - ceramic tiles. It must be remembered: on a too light plain floor, any debris will be immediately noticeable. A more practical solution is a patterned coating. Read more about all types of flooring in our review.

Optimum shades for the floor: light wood, neutral light gray or patchwork tiles. Interior of the Tulskaya apartment, designer Evgeny Zhdanov nine0006 Light furniture

Kitchen set

The white headset looks impressive, but to make everything shine and sparkle, you will have to spend a lot of effort. With frequent use, it is better to choose creamy, milky and other white options - the dazzling effect will remain, and you will have less to worry about every spilled drop. Less whimsical coffee, beige, light gray surfaces.

The pale gray color of the facades is a good choice for a bright kitchen. It didn’t get darker, but practicality and ease of care were added. Project "Modern interior in a classic frame", designer Elena Mizotina nine0016

It is better to choose a semi-matt coating for a white kitchen set: a slight sheen gives neatness.

Dining group

Against a light background, dining tables of all shapes, colors and materials look great.

Chairs for a bright kitchen can be chosen to match the main color or a related shade. Also, the best option would be a light tree - a universal solution for almost all styles. nine0003

Experiments are allowed. If the dining group is in rich dark colors, it can be advantageously emphasized by a white, beige or gray background. Bright upholstery for chairs will enliven the interior. A daring way for the brave is to choose chairs of different styles.

An alternative to a dining table can be a bar counter made of white stone. At the same time, bar stools can become an addition to the usual ones, or they can completely replace them. nine0003 The kitchen island is used here as a bar counter. This solution saves space and adds light. Casual style apartment, designed by Dreams Come True Studio

Lighting

The more lighting scenarios, the more expensive and spectacular any interior looks. And in the kitchen, moreover, the more light, the more convenient it is to cook. It is worth considering the possibility of lighting all work areas: above the sink, the cooking area and the hob. Actually, with the help of lamps, the room can be divided into zones - a progressive and practical solution. nine0003 Illumination of the working area is a convenient and practical solution even during the day. You can add LEDs above the kitchen unit and under the floor cabinets - and experiment by lighting different lamps. And with such lighting, the kitchen will seem to “soar in the air”. pinterest If cabinets with glass doors are used, lighting will also be appropriate inside. Project of an apartment in Tatyanin Park Residential Complex, designer Ekaterina Stepanova

Light textile nine0007

Properly selected fabrics help to make the kitchen cozier: first of all, curtains and tablecloths. If mostly neutral tones are used in the room, you can stop at textiles that are close in tone. Light walls and white curtains are beautiful, but bright spots should also be provided in the interior, for example, colored upholstery of upholstered furniture or wall decor.

Textiles soften the austere interior and do not block the beautiful floor-to-ceiling window too much. Art Dynamics project, designed by Helen and Michael Miroshkin nine0002 Heavy, thick curtains in the kitchen are not needed, because the sunlight does not need to be blocked. It is better to choose light fabrics - mesh, tulle, organza. Curtains to the floor look beautiful, but such a solution, of course, is not very practical - light fabric will quickly get dirty. Short curtains look organically in the interior of the kitchen - Roman or "cafe".

Light walls and bright printed curtains are a beautiful, energetic combination. Family meals in a room where this combination of shades is used will be especially warm and joyful. nine0003

Decor and bright accents

A bright kitchen is a territory of complete design freedom. Bright decor will create the character of the room, help to express the tastes of the owner and his aesthetic preferences.

Bright oriental accents in a white kitchen: decorative plates, vases, curtains, tiles in similar shades and a beautiful contrasting tablecloth. Turquoise reigns supreme in this kitchen, but it has become the main one because it is “laid” on white. Project of an apartment on Zoological Street, designer Margarita Mustafina nine0002 Interesting furniture fittings will also help to add individuality to the interior - for example, an ordinary white wardrobe can be transformed simply by picking up original handles in a classic or ultra-modern style. The fittings can match the color of the facades or be contrasting, emphatically catchy.

Original household appliances significantly affect the style - they are not only functional, but can also become an element of decor.

Adding color to a bright interior is easy - for example, using a colored refrigerator. You can do even more boldly - choose all household appliances in cheerful shades. pinterest nine0006 Design styles

Classical

The classic style palette is soft shades of beige, light yellow, milky. Patterned moldings in the design of facades, walls and ceilings will help to make the interior more interesting. You can use gold - gold fittings and decor will emphasize the "solemnity" characteristic of the classics.

Minimalism

Minimalism is characterized by functionality, lack of unnecessary decor, monochrome color solutions. Bright and complex color combinations in such interiors are rare. Shades of natural stone, different types of wood are preferred. Color contrasts like black or chrome details are organic when it comes to dishes, household appliances, faucets, sinks, lamps. nine0003 The less visual noise the better. Apartment project "Reincarnation", designer MARI GRI

Modern

The main color can be anything, but light shades have a significant plus: neutral colors such as beige, gray and white will be the perfect backdrop for experimenting with decor. Bright accents should not be abused, just one noticeable “spot” is enough - for example, a refrigerator, a rack or chairs.
Another plus: a modern kitchen should be functional, and light shades are more practical than dark ones. nine0129

Clean lines, cutting-edge materials and futuristic furnishings. Black appliances and a black window frame are the perfect companions for light colors. Korostovo Family project, designer MARI GRI

Provence and country

Such interiors should remind you of a relaxed life in a country house. Calm white and beige, delicate shades of blue and green are most preferred. You can use gray, but the lightest shade. Patterns on textiles - floral arrangements, polka dots, a medium-sized cage - everything should be soft and discreet. It is advisable to complement the overall picture with household appliances in retro style in bronze and copper. An abundance of small details, natural textures, aged or vintage furniture is welcome, it is also better in light colors. nine0003 The main thing in Provence is the emphasized retro mood and the relaxed atmosphere of a country house. Scandinavian

There are practically no strict rules for choosing a color scheme, but the main advantage is calm natural base shades and natural textures. At the same time, the walls and ceiling should be painted only in white, but for the floor, you can choose darker shades and colorful patterns. Black furniture fittings, black lamps and kitchen accessories serve as a reminder of the style's harsh northern origins. The Nordic character can become more cheerful if you add accent elements of any saturated color - red, bright yellow, for example, in dishes and decor. Geometric patterns on tiles, wall panels and textiles are a characteristic detail of Scandi. We wrote in detail about the Scandinavian style in the interior here. nine0129

Loft

Light shades are not particularly characteristic of this style, but they can help create unexpected visual effects. It is worth paying attention to white, beige and gray. Calm neutral colors will advantageously emphasize the rough textures of the main finish. Contrasting solutions will add visual variety without overloading the overall picture with unnecessary details.

A white kitchen can be brutal when placed against a brick wall and accentuated with black elements. Apartment project "Soft Loft", designer Dmitry Petrov nine0002 On the cover: an apartment project in Tatyanin Park Residential Complex, Ekaterina Stepanova

Interior design ideas and tips

Kitchen furniture in light shades has long become a classic, white is especially popular. This is not surprising, because it is white cabinets, racks and shelves that look organic in almost any kitchen, they are easily combined with other decor elements and, which is also important, visually make the room more spacious. However, sometimes adding a portion of bright colors to the bright interior of the kitchen means literally breathing new life into it. And here are just a few examples. nine0003

And here are just a few examples. nine0003

Big things start with little things! If you're renting an apartment or are just hesitant to make a radical change yet, start with small details. You can, for example, replace the handles on all kitchen cabinets. In the home improvement store you will find a huge variety of different pens in all sorts of colors. Feel free to experiment with bright colors, because it will not be difficult to change the parts you don’t like or bother with new ones. nine0003

In order to add a fresh mood to the interior of the kitchen, it is not at all necessary to repaint the kitchen set itself. You can set color accents with other pieces of furniture, such as a cutting table, a shelving unit or a lamp. Give preference to the most contrasting colors in relation to white, let the shades be as saturated as possible. Take a look at how stylish the kitchen looks, in which juicy red and deep blue are revealed against the white background. nine0003

In the event that you still dare to independently repaint pieces of furniture, carefully study the issue in advance, so you are guaranteed to get the result you expect. Before painting, the selected piece of furniture must be removed all fittings. Make sure the area you'll be painting in is well ventilated, if not, you'll need to move the object.

Prepare brushes and rollers in advance, when choosing tools, professionals do not advise saving money, because they can make the staining process comfortable and fast. nine0003

Another important factor that will affect the quality of the final result is the use of a soil layer. This is a very important step that must be done before painting, the primer will help hide minor surface defects, level it. In addition, any material that is pre-primed will hold the paint better, and the color will be more accurate and brighter.

A great idea for updating kitchen cabinets with glass doors. Decorate the cabinet walls from the inside, you can choose one bright color or printed wallpaper for this. In any case, it will look interesting and stylish, and the dishes against the background of bright colors even look somewhat solemn. If the cabinet doors are opaque, this technique will help create an equally interesting and very unexpected effect every time you open it. nine0003

This technique can also be used to decorate open hanging shelves and racks. Painting them yourself is not difficult even for a beginner in matters of design and repair. This is a great way to change up your kitchen décor as often as you like.

Take a look at how bright canary yellow became an accent color in a kitchen that was originally designed in light colors.

Open hanging shelves will also sparkle with new colors if you give them a bright color that complements the main palette. nine0003

If you are ready for the most daring experiments in kitchen interior design, consider painting entire furniture groups. This is already a more voluminous work, but the result will be a visually completely updated room.

A bright color against a white background is also a great decor option for small kitchens, the accents in this case will divert attention to themselves.

In addition to rich shades with white, soft, watercolor tones also work great.
