Staircase landings often represent somewhat of a tricky spot when it comes to interior design. They are often small enough to very easily clutter up with even the smallest pieces of furniture, but can also come in sizes big enough to feel empty if you don’t do anything with them.

Fortunately, there are no shortage of ideas for what to do with your landing, all you need is a little inspiration, which is exactly what I aim to provide here. So let’s get to it!

What is a Staircase Landing?

Before I get into what to do with your landing, let’s take a moment to clarify what a landing is. A staircase landing is an area of floor that can be at the bottom, top, or part way up a flight of stairs. In the case of a landing that is part way up the stairs, it may be to enable a smooth change of direction, such as 90 degrees to the side, or 180 degrees back on itself.

In the case of top landings, they will usually be the place from which many or all of the upstairs rooms are accessed, and there can often be quite a lot of void space there.

Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are perhaps one of the most common ideas for a landing, not to mention the rest of the staircase. On top of making the walls look less sparse, personal photos bring an undeniable element of yourself into the space. As far as the interior design goes, a gallery wall is very inexpensive to achieve.

You can repurpose old photo frames if needed, or even get creative and make your own. Of course, you don’t have to use family photos. Your favorite posters or artwork will look just as good up there.

One of the great things about reading is that it is an activity that takes very little space. Your mind may be off in fantastic and exotic places, but your body needs little more than a comfortable chair. If you have enough space on your staircase landing for a small bookcase and the aforementioned comfy chair, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not turning it into a cozy little reading nook. If you can position your chair (or small sofa, for that matter) so that it gets plenty of sunlight, even better!

I’m getting into big landing territory here, but if you have space for a bit of furniture on your landing, you might consider having a luxurious fireplace fitted, giving you a nice space to relax in.

You may not be able to (or want to) turn your landing into a space that you actively use, but that doesn’t mean that space has to go to waste. An armoire will allow you to turn some of that space into useful storage, and look great while it does so.

There is no shortage of creative designs you can incorporate into your landing and you may have noticed that many of the ideas I shared here today can be mixed and matched. In other words, it is possible to create something truly your own, that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Always remember to think about what you actually want from the space. There is no sense wasting your landing on a reading nook if you hardly ever read books! Most of all, be practical. If you have a small landing, don’t make it almost unusable by stuffing a huge desk in there.

Dressing up the stairway landing | Thrifty Decor Chick

Fall is here and I'm back working on a bunch of projects! Feels good to be tackling stuff again. This one is simple and inexpensive fix that may be helpful for a lot of you. 

We have a window at our stair landing that I've wanted to address for awhile: 

I love love love our stairs! The landing just felt a bit bare with the plain window: 

Obviously it didn't bother me too badly as it was -- I've left it like this for three years now. But I've wanted to add some drapes and a little something to dress it up.  

Problem is, the window is WAY up there! I needed super long curtains to make this work. 

Thankfully I already had what I needed. Remember years back when I needed really long drapes for our family room? I found super inexpensive drapes and hardware that worked perfectly:

I ended up switching out those gray drapes for lighter ones, knowing I'd eventually use the gray ones later: 

I went back to IKEA for the drapery hardware I used last time -- I needed a really long rod, which is typically more expensive. IKEA's curtain hardware saved the day! I only paid $10 for the long rod and all of the hardware. I've never found rods and hardware for that cheap anywhere. 

I got up on an eight foot ladder to hang them and thought I was going to die. I was sweating so badly I couldn't even use my tools at times. 😂 I am NOT a fan of heights. One hundred percent do not recommend. 

But it was worth it! Our son suggested we add a bench here, which I loved! He's so smart. :) I need to steam the drapes since they've been folded up for years, but otherwise it looks great!:

Our landing isn't huge, but we still have plenty of room. Our upstairs is small with just a few rooms, so not many people go up there:

This is the time of year that I welcome a bit more stuff into our home -- it feels cozy and warm. In the new year I may want a little less...we'll see!

Of course, when it comes to more serious arrangements, it is impossible to do without the help of adults. Unfortunately, some of the Russian entrances are in such a state that they can be repaired only by serious measures: by painting the walls, insulating the windows.

Handy Access Devices

To make life easier, you can use several convenient access devices:

  1. Hooks designed for heavy bags. You can buy them at any hardware store, and for mere pennies. Such a device is very convenient, because such hooks will allow you to free your hands and allow you to calmly find the keys to the apartment and open the door.
  2. Newspaper rack or any other wall-mounted metal holder that can be used to store books or newspapers. Such a device will be very convenient for those people who like to combine smoking with reading a book. In addition, the magazine rack is very convenient for exchanging books between neighbors, they can share among themselves the literature that they have already studied before;
  3. Ashtray. The presence of this device ensures that a cigarette butt not extinguished by one of the neighbors will fly to the floor or into the garbage chute, which can cause a fire. If the house does not have a door with a combination lock, you can raise money and purchase one for your entrance. Such a door will allow you to avoid uninvited guests, which, of course, will not guarantee the preservation of cleanliness in the entrance, but will allow you to keep the room in a new form for much longer.
