Grey carpet for bedroom

Grey Carpets: Top 7 Grey Carpets for Your Bedroom, Living Room & More

Neutral carpets are a popular feature of modern houses. Colours like white, beige, brown and grey are extremely popular because of their versatility; any of these neutral colours are sure to tone with whichever colour scheme you choose for your home – and this will hold true for every repainting and restyling in the future.

Of all the neutral colour carpet options, grey is clearly one of the standouts. There are so many different hues, shades, and tones of grey that give you a true avenue for creativity while styling your home.

Carpets also come in a variety of textures that can help bring extra visual layers into the décor of your room; consider things like softness, pattern and durability while ruminating on which type of grey carpet would best suit your home.

Part of why grey is so popular in particular is because it is a dark neutral, which is fairly uncommon. Though brown is dark, it does not quite have the same cool neutrality as grey, because it is a warm colour at heart.

Likewise, shades of white and beige are beautiful and cool, but their pale colour makes them vulnerable to wear and staining over time. Grey carpets are a perfect middle ground, because they have the opacity that makes stains and the effect of foot traffic less noticeable over time but will not steal the spotlight from the rest of your décor.

How to choose the right carpet for your home

When you are considering purchasing grey carpet for your home, there are a few things you will want to consider. As stated above, texture is always a good place to start.

There are many different textures of carpet, such as plush (soft, fluffy and luxurious), shag (a vintage look that many will remember from their childhoods), patterns (can be textured differently within the carpet as well) and natural fiber (for that natural, minimalistic-woven look).

Something else to keep in mind is the lighting of your room and the already established interior design styles within your home. If you haven’t begun decorating your home yet, this is where you will nominate a design style to help begin the process of furniture and accent selection.

You want to find a carpet that will blend well with the rest of the room, but not steal attention. This means searching for something in a similar style and material to the other furniture pieces such as a couch or a bed frame.

Once you have a solid idea of the form and style that you want for your carpet, you can begin seeking samples from possible manufacturers.

Samples are usually free and you should try to examine them at home where the carpet is going to be installed to get a sense of how this particular shade will look under the specific lighting conditions of the room.

If you think a grey bedroom carpet sounds boring, think again - our grey bedroom carpet ideas will show you just how versatile this choice of flooring can be, and why it can be the perfect match for your bedroom furniture and decor, whatever their current style.

Grey bedroom ideas are forever increasing in popularity, largely because they help create a soft, relaxed atmosphere, while leaving space to add colour and experiment with various decorative finishes. From soft pale hues to deeper rich tones, a grey carpet ties the whole room together, and works with a vast variety of colour schemes.

'Carpets are synonymous with comfort which is why they are the most popular choice for flooring in the bedroom', says Jon Flannigan, Product Manager at carpet sepcialists Kersaint Cobb. 'People want to feel relaxed before they go to sleep or unwind, and the soft, neutral tones of grey are perfect for this because of its harmonious, calming qualities.'

'Far from being boring, a grey bedroom carpet creates the ideal palette to personalise a space', agrees Julian Downes, Managing Director of Fibre.

Grey bedroom carpet ideas

Whether you want to completely transform your bedroom's aesthetic or simply switch up the flooring to match your carefully chosen decor and furniture, a grey carpet can drastically improve the look of your space. Once you're happy with the results, why not expand the grey theme into grey carpet living room ideas?

1. Choose a chunky wool carpet for extra cosiness

A grey wool carpet is a wonderfully soft and luxurious option for the bedroom, and a sure way to make the space as cosy as possible.

'Wool is an excellent heat insulator which means it will help to keep your bedroom warm and cosy without using surplus energy', says Jon Flannigan from Kersaint Cobb. 'It is also very effective at absorbing noise which will allow you to keep your bedroom peaceful and quiet away from the rest of the house.'

Get clued up on how to care for wool carpets before you invest, but a chunky grey carpet could be a nice way to cosy up the bedroom in time for autumn.

2. A pastel grey carpet will create a serene setting

Opt for lighter shades of grey to create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom via the carpet.

'Warm muted greys, stone based colours and natural hues are perfect for creating a comforting environment in spaces where we want to relax', says Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director of Little Greene . 'The use of warm neutrals and earthier tones, recreates the soothing properties of our natural surroundings.'

A pale grey carpet will naturally complement any other pastel tones you want to bring in via furnishings and accessories. Plus, a lighter carpet will be safe in the bedroom, where it's less likely to pick up dirt from shoes.

3. Treat your feet to a textured carpet

Carpets come in all variety of textures, and a neutral colour like grey can benefit from materials that create eye-catching designs like loop pile or coir.

Choose a grey carpet that has a subtle ribbed or stripey effect, and this will work well at capturing any natural light in the room. Any carpets with a slightly raised effect will add a soft luxurious touch to the bedroom.

4. Add a hero rug with contrasting trim

A large rug can sit perfectly on top of a soft grey carpet to create a naturally eye-catching contrast.

Select a rug with a warm shade of grey and place it centrally to create a simple but elegant focal point in a bedroom. 'If you are choosing a rug in a pale tone of grey, you can add a contrasting darker trim to truly zone an area while elevating the tones and textures of the wool', says carpet expert Julian Downes.

Working multiple shades of grey into the flooring will give the bedroom a classy look, while the rug will add texture and contribute to a cosier feel.

5. Choose a patterned carpet for a stylish twist

A patterned carpet can bring a fun element into the bedroom, and choosing one with neutral grey tones will maintain a classy aesthetic.

Patterned carpet ideas look great in rooms with simple decor and minimal furniture, so choose one if you currently have a lot of free floor space in your bedroom. Bolder prints can look fabulous, but softer patterns are ideal for maintaining the bedroom's calm aesthetic.

6. Group your carpet with natural materials

Keep things light and airy by pairing a soft grey carpet with natural materials. Wooden furniture and linen decor pieces will sit beautifully on top of a pale grey carpet and help create a tranquil atmosphere in the room.

'A greige carpet should be grouped with natural materials like linens and woods to complete a serene and welcoming ambience', advises a decorating expert from Neatsmith . This simple, rustic look borrows from the relaxed coastal grandma aesthetic, which is perfect for the bedroom.

7. Add a touch of glamour with a charcoal grey carpet

If you prefer moodier hues, a lush charcoal coloured carpet would be an ideal addition to any bedroom ideas.

A gorgeous dark grey carpet would still complement neutral, simple tones, and actually would be the perfect balance to lighter pieces of decor and furniture. An off-white bed or dressing table would look beautiful grounded on top of a charcoal or slate grey carpet, and you could even bring in a pop of colour to highlight the floor's rich tones.

8. Use plants to embrace the natural feel of grey

Sitting a tall freestanding plant on top of a grey carpet can complete the floor's natural aesthetic, and bring in a complementary pop of botanical green.

'Plants are a simple but effective way to style a grey bedroom carpet', says the Fibre's Managing Director. 'They bring a fresh touch of green and look great with earthy toned accessories such as terracotta vases and pots. Incorporate enough to draw the eye but not enough to overpower an otherwise calming space.'

9. Layer your carpet with a brightly coloured rug

One of the best things about a grey carpet is its ability to pair so well with other colours and textures. A fluffy rug is a great accompaniment to a grey floor because it will add an element of visual interest, as well as more texture for cosiness.

Julian says that 'a great way to add a focal point in the bedroom is to opt for a fitted carpet in a neutral grey and then layer a brightly coloured rug on top. These rugs can also be easily moved around to create a fresh look as and when it’s time for a room refresh.' Match your chosen colour of rug to other pieces of decor to create a nice accented theme in the room.

10. Try grey on top of grey

There aren't many colours with which you could double up on the floor, but thanks to the wonderous versatility of grey, you could match a stylish grey rug with a fitted grey carpet underneath.

Just have some sort of contrast between the two layers. A geometric pattern rug for example would look great on top of a pale grey floor, and create a natural focal point in the room. Place the rug in an area of free floor space, or underneath a dressing table or wardobe to naturally draw the eye.

Continue the grey going upwards with the best grey paint for walls and match with the bedding. The possibilities of grey are endless!

What colours go well with grey carpet?

The beauty of a grey bedroom carpet is that it offers the freedom to incorporate almost any other colour of your choosing into the space.

'Grey pairs with so many colours as it offers a vast array of tones from deep charcoal to soft pale grey', says interior expert Julian Downes. 'Popular pairings in our experience are yellow, blues or pinks for a soft, warm scheme, but we also see combinations of deep and pale greys or grey with black and white for a timeless monochromatic scheme.'

'Bedrooms are an incredibly personal space', says Ruth from Little Greene. 'They are the perfect room for creating a sanctuary, a calming retreat for relaxation at the end of the day.' You can pick any colour you like and a neutral grey carpet will balance any brighter shades and warmer hues, so your bedroom can maintain an overall sense of calm.

How do you style a room with a grey carpet?

'A way to work out how to style a grey carpet is to think of the carpet as your 5th wall', says Jon Flannigan, carpet expert at Kersaint Cobb.

'Carpets and walls are the largest visual areas in any room, so consider your floor as your 5th wall and opt for colours in related shades for a harmonious look.' In the bedroom, grouping a grey carpet with other neutral shades will create soothing hues and a calm, relaxed atmosphere. Stick to this softer colour palette with larger pieces of furniture, as well as floor-length curtains and trailing blankets.

Alternatively, you can style your grey carpet with brighter colours to bring some visual variety into the bedroom. 'Tones of grey can sit alongside contrasting patterns or pops of colour', says Julian from Fibre. 'These can add depth and a richness of tone while maintaining a calm space.' Add a splash of colour with a shaggy rug and matching bedding to bring a fun twist into the room.

The bedroom is an ideal room for carpet placement, because it is often walked barefoot, and the likelihood of planting a hard-to-remove stain is minimized. As a result, on the one hand, there is unlimited scope for imagination, on the other hand, confusion if you do not know how to choose and where to lay the carpet in the bedroom. We will talk about the choice and proper placement in this article.

The need for a carpet in the bedroom often causes controversy, but if its wall placement in a modern interior is not always appropriate, then the comfort of using bedside rugs is usually beyond doubt.

And if we talk about the functions of the floor carpet, then in the bedroom it provides:

An interesting fact: carpets are not only beautiful and functional, but also healthy.

Woolen carpets help maintain a stable microclimate in the room, and medium and long pile rugs, regardless of the pile material, also provide a massage effect for the feet when walking on them barefoot. In general, additional properties depend on the composition of the carpet.

All carpets are made from natural or synthetic materials, and the composition is monocomponent and mixed. Suitable options for the bedroom, we will consider further.

Natural - wool, cotton, fur, silk

Wool is the most popular natural material, although it is quite expensive. Woolen carpets are durable, retain heat best of all and have an elastic fluffy pile. They are appropriate in the bedroom due to the restrained palette of colors, which is due to the peculiarity of the woolen thread - it is difficult to dye in very bright colors. These carpets are valued for their ability to accumulate moisture when it is in excess in the air and give it away when it is deficient. Disadvantages of wool: demanding care and the likelihood of allergies in people prone to it. Manufacturers compensate for the first drawback by adding synthetics to the composition, the second - by impregnating the pile.

Cotton is an environmentally friendly material, hygroscopic and pleasant to the touch. Usually cotton carpets are used in children's rooms, but you can find interesting options for bedrooms. One has only to keep in mind that cotton carpets are not very durable, shrink after washing and quickly fade in direct sunlight.

Fur carpets are usually made from sheepskin, less often from goat and alpaca skins. Not technically woven rugs, these rugs are loved by fans of the exotic for their unusual designs and natural textures. But they also have a significant drawback - demanding care, otherwise they will quickly lose their attractiveness.

Silk is the most expensive natural material. Handmade carpets woven from it adorn the interior with an exquisite design. But due to the price and mediocre thermal insulation properties, silk rugs are rarely found in bedrooms.

Viscose is called artificial silk and is more often used in the bedroom, but it also provides poor heat and sound insulation. But the viscose carpet is similar to natural silk and is suitable for underfloor heating.

Synthetic materials - polypropylene, acrylic, nylon, polyester

Polypropylene carpets are popular due to their practicality, variety of colors and price range. And if hard rugs made of BCF polypropylene are not the best choice for a bedroom, then products with a hit-set or frieze pile will please not only with their design and cost, but also with the pleasant texture of an elastic pile.

Acrylic is visually and tactilely similar to natural wool and costs less than it, but at the same time it is more expensive than other types of synthetics. But if you want to decorate the bedroom with a beautiful and warm hypoallergenic rug, then you will like the option with acrylic pile.

Nylon is commonly woven into low-pile carpets, notable for their durability and pleasant velvety texture. And this is a universal choice in a situation if you prefer to walk around the room in slippers and barefoot.

Abrasion resistant and polyester. Unpretentious in everyday life and diverse in design, polyester rugs have a good price-life ratio, so long pile designs are often used to decorate bedrooms.

Shape and size are important characteristics of a rug, along with material and color, and together they affect the perception of a rug in a bedroom space.

Size selection

By size, all carpets are divided into three groups - small (up to 3 m²), medium (3-6 m²) and large (from 6 m²). The appropriate size of carpet depends on where you plan to install it.

Small rugs often draw attention to a separate area and create a contrast or addition to one of the colors of the interior. The most common location is on either side of the bed, or in any area but over a larger rug.

Medium carpets are most convenient to use when highlighting a specific area - for sleeping or relaxing, changing clothes, and so on. Accordingly, they are placed next to a bed or a corner sofa, in front of a dressing table, wardrobe or chest of drawers.

A large carpet, depending on the size of the room, can cover the entire floor or be a zoning tool. Oversized carpet in the bedroom is always a background element of the interior, so you should choose a design with calm colors and an unobtrusive pattern.

An easy way to determine the right size is to outline the outline of the future carpet on the floor with masking tape. This trick will help you figure out how appropriate a carpet product of various dimensions looks in a selected area.

Shape selection

In the bedroom, rectangular, square and oval carpets are commonly used.

Rectangle and square are a classic solution for any part of the room and the way the carpet is placed. An oval rug draws attention with rounded edges, so it is best used to emphasize the elegance and flowing outlines of the foot of the bed, dressing table or mirror, pouffe, armchair or sofa.

Non-standard forms of carpet products or skins look stylish and unusual, but require some care in placement, because there is only one step from originality to bad taste.

In the interior of the bedroom, the carpet can serve as an accent or background element, and the appropriate color will depend on the role. It is worth considering an important nuance: a light-colored carpet product looks better on a dark floor covering, and vice versa.

When creating a harmonious backdrop, it is best to use a medium to large-sized carpet in pastel colors and with an unobtrusive pattern. Its color can be matched to match other textile elements of the interior. A good example: cream curtains and a milky white bedspread look good with a beige or chocolate-colored carpet - depending on whether it will be bedded on a dark floor or on a light one.

A simple and elegant solution is to choose one or two non-contrasting colors as the main ones for decorating the bedroom and complement them with a similar shade of carpet.

The bed can match the carpet in color, but differ in shade - otherwise you risk getting an inexpressive color spot instead of the central element of the bedroom. In this case, a contrast would be a better option: the tone of the carpet is chosen in accordance with the colors of the textiles, but differs in color from the furniture.

If the carpet is assigned the role of an accent element of the interior, then choosing a color to match the walls can be a good solution. So, in a bedroom with furniture and textiles in natural beige-brown tones, the walls and the carpet in white, pearl gray, pink, blue or green look harmonious.

A good example of a contrasting combination is a rich raspberry, purple or light green carpet in a black and white interior. However, the choice of color in should be treated with caution - too bright and invigorating shades in the bedroom can interfere with rest. When creating contrast, choose either deep and clean tones, or an expressive pattern with a companion in the surrounding interior.

The traditional location of the carpet is near the bed, in the so-called barefoot area. In this case, the choice of the size of the carpet directly depends on the dimensions and methods of furniture placement relative to the carpet. Three of these methods can be distinguished:

  1. The bed and bedside tables are on the carpet. The carpet product can match the length of the bed or go beyond it by 0.5-0.7 m, not only on the sides, but also at the foot.
  2. The bed has two legs on the carpet, which covers almost the entire floor under it. With this arrangement, the edge of the carpet adjoins the bedside tables, but their legs are on the floor. The carpet goes beyond the boundaries of the bed by 0. 5-0.7 m on two or three sides.
  3. The carpet is laid across and covers half or a third of the space under the bed, going beyond it for any distance. A convenient solution for simultaneously covering the bare area and the entrance of the bedroom with a carpet product.

These options allow you to effectively highlight the bare area and are optimal for low and medium pile carpets. Carpet products with a long pile can also be laid in this way, but it is worth bearing in mind the additional difficulties in care, and it is desirable to have a bed with thin legs in order to reduce the deformation area.

Alternatively, you can lay not one large carpet, but two or three smaller ones. It is more convenient, practical and often cheaper. You can also stock up on several sets of different rugs, changing and combining them according to your mood.

A more complex option for placing the carpet is asymmetric. To do this, they buy a non-standard-shaped carpet product or place an ordinary rectangular or oval rug at an angle relative to the bed. But such an approach requires an artistic eye, because creating a balanced geometric fragmentation is not an easy task.

Carpet is also often covered on the floor at the foot of the bed and the area between it and the closet or dressing table.

For the correct choice of design and size, it is enough to answer three questions.

Where do you plan to lay the carpet and why?

To create an accent within one zone, you can choose a bright rug with an original pattern. In this case, you can consider options for an unusual shape - in the form of a skin, a flower or a leaf of a plant. For zoning a spacious room, it is convenient to use several medium-sized carpets - the main thing is to choose them so that the designs combine and complement each other.

If you need to set the tone for the whole room with a rug, a large or medium rug will work, depending on the size of the bedroom.

Do you like long hair?

If you like a long pile and you are ready to take care of it properly, then a shaggy carpet by the bed will be an ideal option. But it should be borne in mind that although it is possible to put furniture on it, it is undesirable, and often, instead of one large carpet product, it is advisable to purchase two or three smaller rugs. If the bedroom space allows, you can lay one medium rug to the side, creating a separate seating area on the floor.

Well, if you are not ready to properly care for a long pile, you can choose an equally interesting and warm medium pile carpet. The most practical, of course, are low-pile carpet products, and among them you can easily find original options with embossed ornaments.

Do you know about the peculiarities of color perception?

The color of the carpet affects the perception of the space around it. This should be borne in mind when choosing, because:

Knowing these features and choosing the right carpet, you can easily create the right atmosphere in the bedroom.

And although the article presents many successful examples, we present you a selection of photos with interesting carpets in bedrooms of different styles.

which type and material to choose?

It is important to know how to choose a carpet in the bedroom, where you should feel the maximum peace and comfort. A bedroom in an apartment or house is a special room, its atmosphere should set you up for relaxation. Carpet in bedroom design can be a significant factor - a highlight of the interior.

Contents

Features and functions

Carpets were once a sign of luxury, but this is no longer the case. As a bright accent in the room, attracting attention, it sets the style, makes the room well-groomed, brings a feeling of home warmth to it.

Those who appreciate comfort and homeliness will never refuse carpet, especially in the room where they sleep. Before deciding which carpet to choose for the bedroom, you need to understand the main criteria that affect the choice: material, texture, shape and size, color.

Carpet on the floor, unlike wall models, is more practical. In addition to improving the look of the room, it also performs the following functions:

The choice of carpet flooring is very large. It can be handmade or mass machined, natural or synthetic, lint-free, long or short nap. A wide range of sizes allows you to choose a model for a room of any size, and colors - for the situation. A useful and stylish accessory that will decorate the room, will cheer you up. You can choose a carpet in the bedroom for any wallet.

Varieties of floor carpets

They differ in material, size, shape, texture, color. Let's take a closer look at these characteristics.

Materials

Wool. A wool product fits advantageously into any space. Most often they are made by hand, so the price for them is high. This is justified by their environmental safety, wear resistance, durability. They will serve you for decades. They have good heat and sound insulation characteristics. The disadvantages include their negative reaction to humidity and fairly rapid pollution.

Silk. Silk carpet is the most expensive in terms of cost, but the quality is also high. They came to us from China, now they are produced by manufacturers from Iran and Uzbekistan. They have a natural luster. Made to order silk products are popular. According to your desire, you can create any drawing or even a picture. They are almost never purchased in an ordinary apartment.

Products made of synthetic materials are affordable for almost any family. Common artificial materials for making carpets are as follows:

Jute rugs are gaining popularity. They are durable, easy to clean and inexpensive. They are afraid of water, when wet they “sit down”. There are also mats - dense, lint-free rugs. They are made from natural fibers of flax, cane, sisal, rice. They are more often used in the country, in country houses.

Shapes and dimensions

The most common form of products is geometric:

A classic rectangular or square rug will look better in the bedroom. They are combined with the situation, repeat the shape of the bed. So you can select a separate piece of furniture (corner sofa, table) or a sleeping area. A round or oval rug will look good with a similarly shaped bed. It will emphasize the area with a dressing table.

Non-standard models are also available for sale: asymmetric models, semi-circular with a figured edge, zigzag, triangular, flower-shaped, etc.

Important! According to the philosophy of Feng Shui, round and oval carpets bring peace, harmony and spirituality into the room.

By size, the produced carpet models are conditionally divided into three groups:

According to the texture, they differ in fluffy, long-haired, smooth models. A fluffy carpet looks like a fur product. It is made from natural materials or synthetics. It will be soft to walk on, creates a special comfort in the bedroom. It is pleasant to lower bare feet on the bedside fluffy rug in the morning.

Also in the bedroom you can choose a carpet with long pile or imitating animal skins. The length of the pile is from 3 to 10 cm. Imagine how softly your legs will sink into it. They are made from natural materials (wool, silk, cotton) and synthetic materials (acrylic, polyester, nylon). The main thing is that it is easy to clean, and it fits the situation. The higher the density of the pile and its elasticity, the longer it will last.

Coarse-grained lint-free products (mats) will give you a massage effect. Walking on them has a tonic effect on the body. Smooth shiny models with an interesting ornament are also suitable for the bedroom. Combined coatings look good, in which smooth areas alternate with areas with pile. They can form an original pattern.

Important! If there are a lot of decorative elements in the room, then an overly textured carpet will overload the decor.

Colors

Carpeting is not just for comfort and legroom. With the help of a carpet, you can create additional bright accents, add variety to the design of the bedroom, visually expand the space, zone the room.

Designers advise following the following recommendations regarding the color of the carpet in the bedroom:

For decoration, many designers use purple and its shades (lilac, lilac). Against the backdrop of a boring environment, it will become an original accent. It goes well with white, green, orange. If you are a creative person, looking at a lilac carpet before going to bed will wake you up with new ideas and fresh thoughts.

Choosing a carpet for a child's bedroom is much more difficult; a number of nuances should be taken into account. In the first place should be the quality of the material. Woolen products are wear-resistant, durable, retain heat well. For children, a model with a long pile is suitable. The shape and size depends on the needs of the child and your preferences. Small rugs can be placed not only near the bed, but also in the work area, in front of the shelf with toys. As for color, it's not necessarily pink for girls and blue for boys. Products can be with interesting drawings of different colors.

The location of the carpet in the bedroom

The location depends on the characteristics of the room and your preferences. In order not to spoil the overall impression of the situation, you need to put it correctly. Common bedroom carpet layouts are as follows:

Carpet can be laid under furniture. In this case, the length of the pile must be taken into account. If the pile is long, then furniture is placed on it with all legs to avoid distortions.

Carpet makes the room more comfortable, most often it is spread under the bed or next to it. This arrangement provides a pleasant feeling when you have to walk barefoot to a closet, dressing table or other piece of furniture.

The size and placement of the carpet depends on the area of the room, the arrangement of the furniture and your tastes. For large size carpets, the main advantage is the ability to highlight the sleeping area. Due to their weight, it is difficult to knock out and carry. Small rugs located on the side or in front of the back are more practical: they are easier to clean, move, and if anything, roll up and put away. They are visible on the floor as a whole, complementing the decor in a more successful way.

Important! You can add originality to the atmosphere if one rug is placed on top of another.

Carpet can be laid not necessarily on the floor, it can be hung on the wall. There are models that are real paintings. In a classic setting, a neutral-colored tapestry can be used as an addition. A room decorated in oriental style will be complemented by a bright and patterned tapestry.

Having decided to hang a carpet on the wall, you need to take into account that the focus will be on it, so you should not overdo it with other bright decorative elements.

Bedroom carpet: which one to choose

Wrong opinion that the carpet is the last century. Designers pay great attention to it. it gives the atmosphere a complete look, creates a cozy atmosphere, becomes a "highlight". It can visually expand the space, add sophistication and elegance. Therefore, the Classic Style Model is a universal solution. Classics is an exemplary style, correct.
