The half bath may be humble, but it offers the perfect opportunity to have fun and take a décor risk. Sometimes called a powder room, this tiny space is simply a bathroom without the “bath” part — it typically only has a toilet and a sink.

While a half bathroom may not add a lot of square footage, it makes a great addition to the main level of your home, serving as a restroom option for guests, and a quick stop in for family members hanging out in the kitchen and living room.

Because the half bathroom is often a space that’s tucked away, it’s ideal for getting creative and trying out fun half bathroom ideas like wild designs you’ve always dreamed of playing with. Maybe it’s paint, wallpaper, or funky decor; regardless, there are tons of half bathroom ideas to consider.

So below, 27 of the most gorgeous half bath ideas we’ve ever seen.

1. Try a funky wallpaper.

Kick things up a notch like @lalasaks did, with a whimsical and colorful wallpaper in your half bathroom. Why not, right? We can’t think of a reason. If you’re obsessed with birds, which many people are, you’ll love this powder blue wallpaper adorned with sweet tweets.

2. Mix patterns.

Instagram user @april_mcghee_ expertly combined two very different but color coordinated wallpaper patterns for a cool, funky look. This is one of our favorite half bathroom ideas, since it allows you to experiment with different colors and patterns without commiting to a large space.

3.

Go dark.

For years, we were told not to use dark colors in small spaces. But times, they are a’changin’, and this incredibly chic half bathroom by @hd.customcreations proves it. Not ready to jump off the deep end when it comes to bold or dark colors? Try painting an accent wall first.

4. Add a sauna-like vibe.

Is there anything more zen than a cedar-lined sauna? Nope. Channel the vibes by transforming your half bathroom into a faux sauna, like the one shown here from @cabinporchparadise.

5. Mix dark and light colors.

Mixing color tones doesn’t always have to come across as funky. Check out this sleek navy and white half bathroom idea from @jennifermichaeldesign. She expertly incorporates a bold patterned wallpaper with an elegant navy vanity complete with gold accents for a stunning finished product.

6 .

Wallpaper half the wall.

We are beyond obsessed with the botanical wallpaper by William Morris combined with brass accents in this powder room. A navy blue vanity pairs perfectly.

8. Go for a unique color.

We’re digging the unique green hue of the vanity in this bathroom, paired with an array of matching houseplants. The witty art with a double meaning doesn’t hurt either.

9. Get wild with wallpaper.

This interior designer’s ambitious DIY remodel has fun wallpaper design in a few different rooms, but the half bath’s hot pink oversized flamingo wallpaper steals the show. You can immediately see how a fun, energetic wallpaper pattern in a small space—like a powder room—can be a great way to inject personality into a small space.

10. Upgrade the mirror.

Since powder rooms are pretty limited in the amount of elements in the space—there’s likely a toilet, a sink, and maybe a mirror and hand towel rack—any changes you make to any of those elements will offer a huge visual impact. Even small updates, like choosing an elegant, oversized round mirror as seen in this classic-rock inspired home, can completely change the look of your half bath.

11. Add one pop of color in a surprising spot.

Remember, a half bath is a small space, so you don’t need a ton of decor elements to make a big impact. If you want to create a bold look with color, consider adding just one delightful hue in a surprising spot. The power room in Leslie Sumner’s St. Louis house has a bright green mirror, for example.

12. Go for gold (or some other pricier finish).

If you crave upgrading the finishes of the fixtures in your half bath, update them to your dream finish! Chances are it’ll be in your budget because you won’t have to replace the finishes in a large room. And because the powder room is really a space apart from the rest of your home, you don’t have to try to “match” the finishes in say, your kitchen. The finishes in this remodeled Charleston home’s half bath all feature a sleek gold vibe.

13. Corner the market on your half bath’s decor.

Don’t be discouraged if the amount of square footage you have available in your half bath is on the diminutive side. Limitations breed creativity, and you can get adventurous with your fixture layouts in order to make it all work. In the powder room above, the sink and medicine cabinet are placed in the corner, creating not only a functional space but a unique one, too!

14.

Go to the dark side.

You may have heard some folks say you should avoid dark colors in small spaces, but that’s just not true in all cases. In this teeny powder room in this UK home, a dark paint color on the walls and the door—as well as in the floor tiles—creates a cozy little hug of a room.

15. Splurge on a modern or high-design faucet.

If you’ve ever had your eyes on a really uniquely designed modern faucet, here’s your chance to incorporate one. Even if it is a stretch on your budget, the bold visual statement of one could be the only decor you really need in your half bath to make an impressive room. Let the sleek modern room in this ocean-inspired Maine home be your inspiration.

16. Go graphic.

Patterns that might be too busy in larger rooms can fit in just perfectly in a small half bath, like the black and white graphic wallpaper in this Atlanta house. But you don’t have to just get graphic on the walls; consider contrasting patterns on hand towels, art, the counters, and more.

17. Hang art wall-to-wall.

Half baths are one of the most fun places to play around with gallery wall ideas because you can create an impressive wall-to-wall look with fewer art pieces than you might imagine. Remember, this is a small room and a small amount of wall space that you have to fill—so play around with different art layout ideas to create a maximalist powder room.

18. Try DIY.

Have you had a DIY idea kicking around in your head but you have been too afraid to try? A small half bath is the perfect place to just go for it! Whether it’s a hand-painted wall mural, an art idea, or something as simple as a polka dot wall pattern like in this charming, eclectic farmhouse, use this small room as your canvas.

19.

Try tiles or marble.

Just like the earlier suggestion of fancy finishes, you should consider splurging on materials that are normally out of budget. Love marble but could never afford marble countertops in your kitchen? See if you can swing it in your power room. Love the look of floor-to-ceiling tiled walls but can’t see yourself plunking down that kind of money for your master bathroom? Try it in the half bath! The powder room in this super organized NYC home can be inspiration.

20. Go wild for wall molding.

In case it’s not clear already, the smaller the room, the less work you have to do to incorporate your wild design ideas. So why not add some wall molding to the room? Why not add really interesting wall molding to the room?

21. Buy double-duty furnishings.

Many of the suggestions in this post have so far been of the aesthetic variety. But you can focus on function in these tiny spaces, too. I love when you can find furniture pieces that can pull double duty and perform two different functions at once, like the mirror shelf combo in the above half bath. You’ll save space with this smart and stylish idea.

22. Embrace vintage.

When the amount of space that you’re working with in your half bath is small, it means the details of the elements can get more attention. This can be particularly charming in rooms with charming Creole cottage displays a great example.

23. Upgrade existing furniture pieces.

You don’t have to buy all new things when you’re updating your half bath. In fact, many of the elements like the vanity, mirror, and other furniture pieces can all be painted to add a lot of personality to a small space. In the above before and after, you can see how a tired vanity got a new lease on life.

24.

Don’t forget about lighting.

In a room as small as a half bath, choosing a dramatic light piece can be one of the only things you need to add pizzaz. The hanging pendant light in this New Orleans house has strong Art Deco vibes, setting the tone for the rest of the space. But you don’t have to focus on just hanging pendant lights, consider wall sconces or a vanity light upgrade above the mirror.

25. Get a little quirky with a theme.

While I often suggest that you try to embrace a similar design style in most of your rooms to bring a sense of cohesiveness to your home, rules go right out of the window when it comes to a half bath. So conceive of a quirky theme (like say, vintage tennis racquets as seen in the Australia house above) and really go for it.

26. Don’t be afraid of going oversized.

While it makes sense to put small sized things in a small room, you don’t always have to stick to that rule. From oversized patterns in wallpaper to oversized fixtures, like the larger-than-it-needs-to-be sink in the renovated New Orleans house above, going intentionally large with a decor element can be a way to add drama to a small room.

27. Keep it simple and chic.

Lest you think you HAVE to go wild with wallpaper, color, or bold elements in your small powder room, this lovely little half bath in a cute New England house shows that you can create just as beautiful of a guest bathroom experience by keeping it simple with color, pattern, and decor.

40 Half Bathroom Decor Ideas

There are so many great things about a half bath — or sometimes referred to as a powder room. At first, it may seem an annoyance that these bathrooms are often smaller and tighter spaces, but when you think about it, with less square footage, you can quickly renovate these spaces without spending a ton of money.

This humble space gives homeowners the opportunity to take risks with their decor and get creative. The half bathroom — a room without the “bath” typically contains a sink and toilet and a few feet of room to dress up and decorate.

We have compiled 40 half bath spaces that we hope will inspire you to take the plunge and do something bold and beautiful with your half bath.

Statement-Making Wallpapers

The half bath is a place where you can take risks and experiment with bold decor ideas. Statement-making wallpaper is a great start. You don’t have to do the whole bathroom, though. Try adding wallpaper on the wall just behind the mirror or just a small part of the wall.

A popular look is to complete the bottom half of the wall with board and batten or shiplap and then carry the rest of the wall with a patterned wallpaper.

Pedestal Sinks

A half bath is an excellent spot for a pedestal sink. In most half baths, you are already short on room, so don’t take up a lot of space with clunky vanities; instead, opt for a decorative pedestal sink.

Given that half baths are used mostly for guests and main level use of the washroom, you don’t need a lot of storage in a vanity. Use this is an opportunity to showcase a vintage style with a custom pedestal sink.

As an added bonus, pedestal sinks are easy to keep clean, too!

Bold Tile Work

Play around with bright and bold tile in the half bath. Since it’s a smaller space, it won’t cost you as much for tiles as a regular size bathroom. You can go for those more expensive, decorative pretty tiles without worrying about your wallet.

Tiling the bottom half of your wall is an excellent look in a powder room, but you could also go the opposite and do the top half behind your mirror.

If it’s in the budget, you can choose two different types of tile and do the whole wall. You will notice that blue is a popular color for the bathroom. It’s serene and calming, so you can’t go wrong with a blue tile.

Wall Sconces

An important design element to put thoughtful care and consideration into is choosing lighting fixtures. A half bath is an excellent place for wall sconces. Since the half bath is not your primary bathroom and most people do not use it to get ready and do things like makeup and hair, you can worry more about the style of the lighting fixture and less about whether it provides sufficient light.

Open Bottom Vanities

Bright and Daring Colors

Go big and bright in the half bath. Below are some bold color choices, and while these are not for everyone, you can’t deny that these bright and cheery bathrooms would impress any guest.

If you’re afraid of how to achieve a nice look with bright colors, try just adding in some pieces of decor without adding in elements that are permanent fixtures. This will give you a small taste of color, and you can see how you feel about it without fully committing.

Stunning Mirror Choices

Go bold and different with your mirror choice in your half bathroom. Since a half bathroom is not usually where you spend time getting ready, it’s an excellent opportunity to have a little fun with your mirror choice. Since practicality is not at the forefront, you can choose a mirror that is more about style and decor than about function.

Often, wall-mounted sinks are smaller than traditional sinks in overall size and can be ordered in lots of different colors, or you can even paint them yourself.

Tips for Decorating a Very Small Half Bath

If your half bath is on the extra small side, here are some quick tips to keep in mind to make the most of decorating this space:

Tips for Refreshing and Decorating a Half Bathroom

Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ

What is the purpose of a half bathroom?

A half bathroom is a small bathroom that contains only a toilet and a sink. They are sometimes called guest bathrooms or powder rooms. There is no shower or tub in a half bathroom; in most homes, it is located on the first floor.

Having the half bath on the first floor permits guests to use the facilities without feeling as though they have invaded your home. The half bath or powder room is usually very small, conveniently discovered, and seldom contains a window.

What should be in a half bathroom?

A half bathroom sometimes referred to as a powder room, typically consists of a toilet, sink, and mirror. Having an under-sink cabinet or another storage area for extra toilet paper, hand towels, and soap is optimal, but these things can be stored elsewhere if the space is tight.

What items should you keep in a guest half bath?

If you're having guests who will be using the half bath, you want to ensure that it is well stocked with toilet paper, hand soap, and hand towels. Make sure that extra toilet paper is accessible and easily seen. A lack of toilet paper is embarrassing when someone is visiting your home.

How do you make a half bath feel cozy?

To cozy up a half bath, add a bath mat or rug. Make sure that there are plenty of hand towels and cute decorative soap bottles, and you can even add personalized bathroom signs. To make the space extra cozy, make sure it smells nice. You can use plug-in diffusers or essential oils.

How do you make a half bath look fancy?

Consider using gold fixtures if you're after a fancy vibe for your half bath or powder room. Working in gold faucets, mirrors, and wall sconces will immediately level up to a more luxurious look and style.

Where did the term \"powder room\" come from?

The term powder room originated around the 18th Century. The powder room was considered a closet-sized room where people applied extra powder to their wigs. The Victorian times kept the term \"powder room\" to discreetly excuse oneself.

You may be familiar with the euphemism \"powdering your nose,\" — as some women still refer to the half bath as the powder room when they use this phrase.

There's no rule about how big half a bathroom should be, but it's usually 50 square feet (total room size, not just walkable floor space). Most often, it is large enough to walk from the toilet to the sink: about 16 square feet.

The full service bathroom has 4 services: toilet, sink and one or two bathing facilities (shower, bathtub, shower/tub combination or shower and bathtub). Thus, in a half bath, there are half as many such services. Some people call it the powder room or the guest bathroom, but as long as it doesn't have bathing services, it's half a bathroom.

Half the bathrooms are a blessing in disguise. Because there are no bathing facilities, your renovation work is cut in half: no showers, no baths, no expansive counters, and floor space the size of a postage stamp.

Contents

Renovating your half bath will not affect your life as much because you are not decommissioning any bath facilities. This gives you more freedom in time to finish the job; however, this also means guests will have to use your main bathroom while the half bath is being renovated.

Half of the bathrooms are small, but this allows you to hone your bathroom design skills before moving on to larger renovations such as the master bathroom.

Contents

Focus on functionality

The number one goal for your powder room is to make sure that any changes you make will make it more functional. Zero attention to determining the purpose of the room, including for family and guests. At a minimum, your washroom should have a toilet, sink, and mirror. Installing a vessel sink will give you extra countertop space, while a vanity provides more storage space. Also, use the space behind the door with items such as a bench, bookshelf, or storage cabinet. These are small adjustments to help you get the most out of the room.

Invest Time & Money

While I also love saving time and money, I also understand that there are benefits that come with investing. The kitchen and bathrooms should receive the most gentle, love and care in all homes. These are the most important spaces to increase resale value and attract the most pedestrians. Your half bath is one room to go the extra mile. Updates, upgrades and great content go a long way.

Free Up Your Floor Space

Don't overlook the value of freeing up your floor space. A floating vanity and a few hooks will do the trick. This is especially important if you have fancy floors to showcase or are working with a small area. Create more room to move and less chance of tripping.

Build Around Bad Designs

Maybe you've put off decorating your half bath because you don't like the shape or design. While this can be tricky, it shouldn't be an excuse for not making the most of the room. For example, in the image above, the neutral paint and textured wall do a great job of drawing your attention away from the falling ceiling.

Apply New Paint

I've said it before and I'll say it again, paint is always a surefire way to instantly transform a room. Old, peeling paint is unattractive and distracting. It's the catalyst for bigger and better things to happen in your bath. This is also your chance to set the tone, mood, and add a pop of color if you choose.

Create the Wow Factor

You know when you're at a party and someone walks into the room and you step back and catch yourself thinking, wow. This is also a technique that you can implement in your half bath. A whimsical back panel, bold lighting fixtures, or vibrant wallpaper are just a few ways to create the wow factor.

Include Glass & Mirrors

Glass sink, vanity, countertop and large mirrors trick the eye into thinking the room is larger than it actually is. These features are also an easy way to make your bathroom look sleek and sophisticated. I'm not sure there are women who would complain about having extra mirrors in the bathroom. If you need more storage space, installing a mirror with a cabinet will kill two birds with one stone.

Pay attention to the details

A crystal doorknob here and a bold faucet there are small details that will take your bathroom decor up a notch. Break down every little detail and think about how you can make each item better. A pretty powder room sign and inviting scents require smart thinking, but not much effort. Several small updates will be combined to create a beautiful big picture.

Get the right lighting

The right lighting is the key to any bathroom. Don't skimp on your half bath just because it's not your main bath. Offer yourself options to set the mood or paint more light depending on the time of day. Mix beautiful fixtures with recessed lighting on a dimmer switch. See our article on bathroom lighting, replacing, selecting and installing for more ideas.

Texture Blending

Decorating with textures is easier than you think. The inclusion of different surfaces and layers is fundamental to getting the right texture. It will make your home more attractive and interesting. Combining materials and objects such as brick, wood, stone, rugs, and textured walls are all ways to achieve this design trend.

Fall in love with designs and patterns

Another way to paint texture is to use different patterns, patterns and shapes. Don't be afraid to mix and match colors and styles. Your countertops, walls, floors and ceiling are all ideas on how to work with more patterns and designs.

Vertical stripes not only look amazing, but will also make your ceilings look taller. With walls like this one, you have nothing more to add. Paint or wallpaper will do the trick.

Decorate It

Bring a little life into your powder room with bright and bold colors and objects. A dazzling mirror, backsplash or unique artwork will create a bathroom that wakes you up in the morning. A fun, bright bathroom will set you up to seize the moment and get more done.

Expand Counter Space

Looking for extra counter space or a twist on a standard dressing table? Make your counters more useful by extending them over the toilet or by bending them around the room. Nobody ever said that all counters had to be square and square.

Keep it clean

When it comes to the bathroom, cleanliness matters more than ever. Keep your bathroom clean, organized and clutter free to get the most out of it. When everything is in its place, the room looks bigger, better and more inviting. Incorporate this room into your cleaning routine so you're always prepared for unexpected visitors.

Make it relaxing

Haven't you always wanted to have your own spa? Well, now you can right in your own home! Why not use the extra space in your half bath as a sanctuary filled with good vibes and healing foods? Adding plants, candles and scents will put you on the right path to creating a peaceful and soothing place to relax.

Get ready to welcome guests

If you have space for a few extra guests, you can guarantee that they will look for a bathroom to use. The half bath is a great place to indicate to them to brush their teeth, wash their faces, and use the restroom to freshen up. A welcome basket with extras and extra towels is a great way to make your guests feel comfortable.

It's all glamorous

Another attractive method for getting the most out of your half bath is to make it super glam. Gold, antiques, wrought iron and flashy window treatments will help you take it to the next level. There's nothing wrong with being chic and fabulous, including in your bathroom.

Add a Window

Adding a window may seem like a big task at first glance, but it's not necessary if you plan and budget accordingly. Natural light, fresh air and nature will transform your bathtub half from a dark hole into a bright and fresh, open sanctuary. The window doesn't have to be that big, it just needs to attract some light.

Swim and wall climb

The key here is to build and use the extra wall space. Floating shelves, hooks and installation cabinets are perfect for a half bath. You'll be shocked at how much more storage space you have when you use the back of your door and empty walls.
