The decorating aesthetic known in the English-speaking world as French country style is an homage to the charms of the French countryside. While it may be hard to replicate the beauty of the surrounding landscape or the aged patina of a Provençal farmhouse, a rustic thatched cottage in Normandy, or a provincial chateau, architects, interior designers, and home decorators around the world have long sought to transport a bit of the charm and elegance of the French countryside to their own backyards.

The resulting mashup known as French country decor emphasizes an easy take on rustic but refined aesthetics and natural materials, and an embrace of timeless everyday objects. Much of what we think of as traditional or farmhouse style interiors that are so ubiquitous today have roots in French country aesthetics, which can add character to a modern interior, easily translating to any room in the house from the living room to the bedroom or bathroom.

Adding some French country-inspired decor to your own kitchen can help you to add a sense of history, timelessness, and simple beauty to your home, no matter where you live. Check out these interiors that demonstrate how to borrow a bit of French style to make your own kitchen design into the warm, charming, effortlessly chic gathering space it was meant to be.

Kitchen design features

Here are just a few examples of not the most successful ideas that look great in a modern kitchen project, but just infuriate in life.

Now for a simple test.

1. Would you like to cook pasta alla carbonara to the lively Italian song Viva la pappa col pomodoro?

2. Do you think it's easier to cook spaghetti to the tune of Makarevich's "I Love Pasta" sung in the Russian way?

3. Or, in blissful silence and in three clicks, are you already ordering ready-made pasta from a delivery service?

Where you answered “yes” depends on the interior of the kitchen: stuffed with culinary gadgets, sharpened for receiving guests, or completely compact, adapted for an office.

Kitchen without a kitchen

Don't like or want to cook - turn your modern kitchen into an island with a slow cooker and microwave. Give the rest of the space to the working area, a soft sofa for relaxing, folding tables for snacks and a disco ball under the ceiling. It's good that designing an apartment for yourself and without focusing on public opinion and traditions is now fashionable.

There is a place to cook (put a comma yourself)

If you have a lot of kids with whom it’s great to bake cookies and have a dumpling party on Fridays, and on weekends your grandmother comes and cooks pancakes, consider an ergonomic kitchen with modern appliances and a “working triangle” sink-stove-refrigerator. Keep track of the fitness tracker: you will walk more than one thousand steps along this route.

Kitchen for culinary experiments - a spacious room where everything is subordinated to cooking. There is a double sink for dishes and vegetables, several cutting boards built into the countertop, a collection of knives on magnetic tape, and perhaps even a trash hole in the countertop to immediately get rid of leaves, packages and small debris. Pay special attention to storage: drawers in the work area, wall cabinets, a dry box for clean towels. Or maybe a separate cabinet up to the ceiling, on the shelves of which there is a place for snifters and a vacuum unit. If the kitchen is narrow, small-sized, non-standard in shape, use all options as work surfaces: stretch the countertop along the window (replacing the window sill) and bring it to the middle of the kitchen as a dining area.

The most inconspicuous kitchen

A small kitchen is a problem with a ready solution. Functionally, it can consist of a module with a sink, a section with a narrow dishwasher and a two-burner stove. Another module will take a compact refrigerator. Place a multi-cooker or coffee machine on the countertop, place a microwave with an oven option in a wall cabinet, and arrange dishes and your favorite spices next door. Such a kitchen will take less than two meters in length, and closed storage systems will make it look like a closet - an ideal solution for those who only mix cocktails and serve purchased dishes.

A few more nuances. Party goers need to make room for a built-in music system and assorted chairs for guests. Workaholics can adapt part of the wall under the moodboard for notes.

Popular interior styles

Whether fresh scandi or austere classic, the style of the kitchen should respond to the mood and demands. For a small kitchen, it is better to choose minimalistic solutions, and fill large spaces with large furniture or unusual loft designs.

Scandinavian style kitchen

Ideal design solution for a small kitchen. Light and uncomplicated facades made of solid wood visually expand the space, a laconic apron made of "boar" tiles is easy to clean, a functional dining area is suitable for leisurely breakfasts and a festive feast. Open shelves as an alternative to upper cabinets, baskets and jute storage boxes, laconic decor and maximum open windows, without thick curtains and blinds. Main - to stay on course for environmental friendliness and apparent simplicity.

The warm texture of wood will make the Scandinavian kitchen cozy and warm, textiles with national ornaments will add color, and dry and fresh flowers will fill the space with natural freshness and memories of summer.

Decorate your Scandinavian-style kitchen with unusual details. For example, make all the handles from strips of leather, order felt covers for chair legs, spread a linen tablecloth. Scandi interiors combine two 2023 trends at once: the reuse of raw materials and the rethinking of old things. So, thick glasses from the grandmother's crystal collection become candlesticks, and a wicker rug will be appropriate on the floor.

The Scandinavian-style kitchen is a great platform for handmade experiments. You can make a rack from a wooden ladder, build storage shelves from vegetable boxes. If the kitchen has a niche, turn it into a full-fledged closet by closing it with a curtain or an old door with stained glass.

Idea: we are planting a garden on the kitchen window sill. Fragrant basil, parsley, lettuce...even cherry tomatoes will fit!

Modern style kitchen

The main principle of modern style in kitchen design is to create a functional and concise space that transforms to suit any mood and needs of the hostess. Imagine that you are assembling a layout from cubes: several sections with household appliances and work areas, as much as possible neutral facades of discreet color and texture (wood, chipboard or MDF, maybe even modern plastic or flexible stone). A modern kitchen can be light and dark, but not colorful, because the dining area comes to the fore, and work cabinets turn into a backdrop for a feast, party or Zoom meeting.

The main decor of the kitchen in modern style is lighting. Soft background light around the entire perimeter is created using hidden LED strips. To do this, order the facades just above the headset itself, put the kitchen on its legs (a couple of centimeters will be enough) and “outline” the kitchen with light from the inside. Choose a warm shade - cold light will make the interior depressing and depressing. It is better to highlight the working area with separate spots cut into the upper cabinets or mounted into the wall, and the dining area will be well decorated with an unusual chandelier or two massive and high floor lamps.

Wall decorations should also be functional: arrange a wine bar near the table or create a phytowall.

Idea: take a closer look at the casspool kitchen. Everything that is possible is built into the lower cabinets: a dishwasher, an oven, a compact refrigerator, cutting boards, a pull-out table, a couple of drawers for dishes. In the assembled version, such a kitchen frees up a lot of space for work, friendly gatherings or yoga classes.

Kitchen in a classic style

The classic features of such an interior: a corner or straight kitchen made of solid wood, expensive appliances in black or steel color, a minimum of decor, a maximum of functionality. The straight lines of the facades are softened by decorative moldings or intricate bevels with monograms. If you make a kitchen to order, then you can come up with a drawing yourself and even create a family coat of arms, why not.

If the kitchen area allows, then you can complement the classic line with a functional island, to which all communications are connected. So the triangle between the stove, sink and refrigerator will become more efficient.

It is better to decorate a classic kitchen with gilded or silver details, elegant curtains on tiebacks, bouquets of flowers and lamps. Simple pendant lamps with plastic lampshades are not at all suitable here. The sophistication of the interior will be emphasized by a crystal chandelier, faceted lighting spots in the work area, and a brass candlestick with real candles or light bulbs as a decor on the table.

Idea: A classic design can be quickly updated with small but noticeable details. Replace handles with brass ones with high-quality enamel inserts, crystal lampshades with stained glass or colored glass, and part of blank kitchen facades with honeycombs. It would not be superfluous to update textiles: curtains, chair covers. The icing on the cake will be an exhibition of china, items for which you will bring from European travels (yes, yes, someday these trips will happen, we believe).

Loft style kitchen

This style is great for large kitchen designs. Rough furniture and brickwork can make a space feel dark and narrow, so applying the factory painter style is best in studios and open-plan spaces with high ceilings and wide windows.

Industrial industrial gives a lot of options for finishing the apron. You can lay out the floor and wall with the same rough tiles (right up to the ceiling), use furniture panels coated with special water-based compounds, and even metal plates, for example, from stainless steel. Such an apron looks very stylish, but it is whimsical to care for, as it does not tolerate abrasive detergents and hard sponges. Well, the coolest thing about a loft is that all communications do not need to be sewn into boxes - rough pipes can become decorative elements. Don't think it's cheap and cheerful. For aesthetics, pipes and wiring should be painted or replaced with brass, aluminum or cast iron options.

Loft-style kitchen set - laconic, made of solid wood, maybe even on a metal frame. And very, very much light! Rough and dark surfaces eat up the light and in the twilight seem worn, unkempt, frankly unfinished, so plan more light spots and backlight lamps. Several ceiling lights on coarse brackets, light paths under the lower tier of cabinets, additional lighting around the hood.

The dining area will be a bar counter or a continuation of the countertop if the kitchen is corner. Massive tables and chairs on iron frames will ideally fit into the loft style. By the way, chairs can be just metal, of different shapes and colors. Such as if you discreetly took them one by one from open bars on the embankment.

Idea: slab tabletop (cut solid wood) — stylish, durable, very expensive. Choose immediately elm, cedar or mulberry, so that for centuries. With additional pouring with epoxy resin, the slab will turn into a familiar rectangle. Or leave the natural curves of the tree.

Provence style kitchen

French rustic chic in the interior of the kitchen is aged furniture, flowers, light curtains, enameled appliances in a design from the 70s and a lot of light. And on the table there is always a wooden bread box, where freshly baked buns and a jug of cream rest under a napkin. The proximity and freshness of the Alps and the French character make this interior relaxed, bright and cozy.

For a Provence kitchen design, it is better to choose a set made of recycled wood, on which scuffs and fibers are visible. Walls need to be plastered and whitewashed (add natural dyes to achieve natural and pale shades, such as turmeric, lavender or blue). The apron can be laid out with small mosaic tiles, and the floor can be made of stone, with heating. If the repair estimate allows, change the window to a wooden one. It is better if it can be opened wide — let the free wind walk in your kitchen, and the sun heat up the upholstery of the chairs. In winter, a warm atmosphere can be created with assorted lamps and floor lamps in fabric lampshades, bouquets of dried flowers in vases and earthenware. Functional gizmos will perfectly fit in as decor: a wooden rolling pin, a cast-iron pan for pancakes, a brass teapot or a marble mortar for spices.

Idea: make fabric curtains instead of massive facades. They require care (at least washing once every couple of weeks), but you can change the shades of the headset at least every month: lavender, azure blue, straw, herbal. With the slightest draft, the kitchen will breathe - perfect for photos on Instagram.

Kitchen interior colors

Depending on the area of the room, choose up to five colors in its design. In this case, the base color in the design of the kitchen should be one. The most trendy is gray, any, even the most catchy, colors are successfully combined with it. Fronts of dusty shades or deep colors also make beautiful combinations. Pistachio and olive kitchens soothe, beige and milky ones expand the space. Ocher, blue and lavender set the mood and call for warm, family holidays.

Use the color wheel - this scheme has never let anyone down. Juicy blue or dusty pink go equally well with a wood or white faux stone countertop. A cozy atmosphere will be supported by contrasting textiles, multi-colored chairs, and decorative elements. No "chess games" in the facades, the 90s are long gone. As much as possible, alternate closed shelves and open ones, glass doors and fabric ones.

Kitchen in light shades

Curiously, warm colors in the interior of the kitchen warm, uplift, improve digestion and stimulate appetite. Food in shades of orange, yellow, or red even looks better. Cold shades of the palette (blue, cyan, green) give a feeling of freshness, soothe, and you no longer want a third portion of dumplings so much.

Light and matte fronts are the perfect kitchen design for years to come. On light surfaces, drops of borscht or soy sauce are slightly more noticeable - therefore, paradoxically, they are easier to keep clean. Neutral facades are easy to decorate with stickers and garlands before the holidays, and a couple of times a year such a kitchen is easy to update by adding colorful decor and new textiles.

Kitchen in dark shades

For this kitchen design, they even came up with a separate style - moody, which means gloomy or gloomy in translation. The black color of the facades (as an option - deep blue, thick green or graphite) adds mystery to the kitchen, a charming and languid atmosphere of a constant winter evening. A minimum of glossy surfaces has long been considered bad form. The walls and backsplash can be black, steel, imitate brickwork, a matte finish, or even a marble pattern. Lighting plays a big role here - lamps with Edison lamps, warm, yellow garlands, spots and sconces. A piercing cold white color will kill all the charm and will highlight every speck.

Kitchen decoration materials

The most difficult question in kitchen design is how to decorate an apron. We immediately brush aside plastic panels, still lifes under glass, ordinary wallpaper or painted walls. Fashionable and functional coatings: classic tiles, marble veneer (these are sheets of durable material that imitates a stone pattern), glazed tiles. Among the extraordinary solutions are typesetting canvases made of specially processed wood, and, unexpectedly, aprons made of metal (for example, stainless steel or aluminum). Metallic coatings will be appropriate in loft style, minimalism and even scandi. They catch the sun and light reflections, expand the space and serve as a place to store the most necessary things, such as knives.

So far, nothing has been invented better than a stone countertop - natural granite or marble, artificial stone or quartz canvas. Even the most durable wood still gives up under the pressure of wet rags, knives, hot pots and inexperienced husbands. The color palette of artificial stone allows you to match the surface to match the facades or play with contrasts. Unexpected options include cast concrete countertops (any color, any additives, even fingerprints) and a tiled surface. They also have a minus: you will cut mozzarella without a cutting board or accidentally drop the pestle from the mortar - the consequences can be fatal.

The kitchen is considered one of the wettest and dirtiest areas of the apartment, so the floor must be especially durable and waterproof. Tiles, porcelain stoneware, class 33 laminate - today there are a lot of durable coatings on the market that can withstand a drop of a mug of hot tea, splashes of hot oil or wine. It is better to choose coatings without a three-dimensional pattern and textured surface - dust, food particles and sticky spots are very difficult to wash.

Kitchen lighting

Even the smallest kitchen is best divided into zones. The work area requires the brightest possible light: headset lighting around the perimeter, separate light blocks above the sink and cutting board, general overhead light and a couple of lamps above the bar or corner sofa. Hide the lighting tape in the joints of the facades, under the wall cabinets or make it a decorative element - the lamps can be mounted into the wall, additionally fixed to the hood.

The 2022 trend in lighting and kitchen design is floating cabinets. In such cases, the backlight is placed in a narrow gap between the floor and the lower facades.

Another trend in design is several lamps (like theatrical spotlights) on a bracket. This design is suspended from the ceiling, may be in the shape of the letter "L" and descend to the floor. The luminaires can be moved and fixed anywhere on the bracket, and can also be rotated 360 degrees. Unusual lamps fit into most styles (especially loft) and allow you to zone the room depending on the needs of the here and now.

An ambiguous trend that is difficult to fit into a beautiful design concept is LED water lighting in a tap.

How to choose furniture for the kitchen

Focus on your needs and design project, but don't forget about useful life hacks.

Modular kitchens of major brands are easier to repair - you just change the damaged segments if necessary.

If your height is above average and in a standard kitchen you feel uncomfortable and have to bend over, do not rush to overpay for increased facades. Make a podium for the kitchen set - cast or with built-in narrow drawers. Such secret storage areas can contain vegetables, heavy pans, or just little things that are rarely needed, like Easter uniforms.

Kitchen cabinets should be designed as efficiently as possible. It is better to do the lower ones with drawers, and reduce the depth of the upper cabinets. Well, or stock up on ladders to get far-standing cans. Magnetic lower shelves of wall cabinets can serve as a place to store spices. Pour the spices into jars with iron lids and simply hang them on the cabinet (as an option, we glue the lids of the jars or fasten them with screws). And on the cabinet doors themselves we make fasteners for storing covers.

If the kitchen area allows, set up a dining area. But, let's say right away, for a family of four, a bar counter is enough, which can also be used as a work surface.

Do not forget that the kitchen is a wet room, so the set and countertop (especially in the sink and stove area) must be moisture resistant and fireproof.
