A tumble dryer temperature guide is essential to keep clothes and bed and bath linens in best condition when you dry these items in the appliance.

While some things are best dried at a high heat others can be damaged by setting the temperature too high. In other words, to avoid having to replace garments and linens prematurely being temperature savvy is a must.

Laundry room ideas will provide you with a practical and stylish space in which to care for your items and our tumble dryer temperature guide contains all the details you need to make drying a stress-free process.

Tumble dryer temperature guide

The laundry symbols on the tags of clothes and bed and bath linens will indicate whether an item can be tumble dried. If it can, this may be with no heat at all, or at low, medium or high heat. Be mindful that tumble dryers may have additional heat settings, and you should consult your manual (online if you haven’t kept it) for recommended uses.

‘Picking the right setting on your dryer is important if you care for what you have in it,’ says Tim David, owner of Airlucent . ‘It’s easy to just load and use the normal setting but you may be doing damage to your fabrics.’

But what are the rules on tumble dryer temperatures when it comes to different items and fabrics? Here are the details.

High heat tumble dryer setting

The high heat setting on a tumble dryer should be used for items such as towels and sturdy cotton items.

The temperature will vary between appliances, but as an example Samsung ’s high heat setting is around 140 to 145ºF (60 to 63ºC).

Medium heat tumble dryer setting

Use the medium heating setting on a tumble dryer for lightweight cottons, such as T-shirts. The permanent press setting works with a medium heat.

Medium is around 130 to 133°F (55 to 56ºC) on a Samsung appliance, for example.

Low heat tumble dryer setting

There are a variety of materials that should be dried with the low heat tumble dryer setting to avoid harm.

‘Many fabrics, such as acrylics, cashmere, wool, and linen, need low heat cycles when you tumble dry them,’ says Justin Soleimani, co-founder of Tumble .

Set the tumble dryer to low heat for clothes made from stretchy fabrics, too – that’s workout wear, and so on.

Low heat is often used with the delicate setting on a tumble dryer, but check the item’s label as it may require no heat, or may be suitable for medium heat.

The low heat setting can be used after washing a down comforter or to tumble dry a duvet (but do check the tags on the items to make sure this doesn’t conflict with the manufacturers’ recommendations).

Low is around 120 to 122°F (49 to 50ºC) on Samsung tumble dryers, as an example.

No heat tumble dryer setting

The no heat tumble dryer setting uses air at room temperature and there’s no heat. It’s for fluffing garments rather than drying them, and can help remove dust or lint, according to Whirlpool .

What can affect dryer temperature?

The internal temperature of a dryer is affected by a number of variables, points out GE Appliances . These are the size of the load and how damp it is. ‘The combination of these two factors determines the amount of heat sink,’ explains GE. ‘Heat sink is the cooling action taking place when the clothes give up their moisture to the hot air stream that is flowing through the dryer drum.’

The actual temperature of the room also has an influence because a dryer pulls air in and then heats it up, say the GE experts.

Finally, air flow also counts. A build up of lint can restrict air flow and make heat rise, they say. Make sure to clean out the filter regularly to avoid this.

Pay attention to the dryer type

Be aware that whether your tumble dryer is a gas or electric version affects how quickly it reaches the temperature selected. ‘Gas dryers heat up more quickly than electric dryers; they cut drying time short, but if you're looking for a quick fluff for more delicate fabric, don’t leave it in the gas dryer for too long,’ recommends Justin Soleimani.

What is the temperature of a dryer on high?

Typically, modern tumble dryers have a high heat around 150ºF (66ºC), but the actual temperature will depend on the model. Be aware that a higher temperature than this does not mean quicker and better results. Too hot a temperature can cause damage to fabrics.

What setting should my tumble dryer be on?

To determine the setting a tumble dryer should be on, always check the label on clothes and linens. This will indicate both the temperature and the cycle which should be used to keep items in good condition for longer.

As a rule high heat can be used for heavy cotton items, medium heat suits clothes like T-shirts, and delicates and sportswear needs low heat.

Cotton Garments

Natural fibers like cotton scrunch together during rapid drying. That’s why it’s important to know how fast your dryer dries. Gas dryers usually heat up faster and dry clothes more quickly than electric dryers. Permanent press typically works best on cotton tees and dresses. Heavier cotton items like towels and jeans can be dried on high heat. To prevent static buildup, add a Bounce® dryer sheet atop laundry in the dryer machine.

Activewear and Stretchy Items

Moms wear activewear all the time (even when we’re not being particularly active). Ensure those yoga pants will last you several seasons with proper care. Stretchy fabrics need special care because these fibers can deteriorate under prolonged exposure to heat. That means these items fair better when they dry flat. However, if your activewear is super sweaty after a good workout, remember to wash the clothes in hot water if indicated to do so by the care label. If you do use the dryer, keep the setting on low heat.

Polyester Blends

Most of us have blended fabrics in our closets. Polyester fibers are different from natural fibers because they don’t absorb moisture. Ever noticed that your poly-blend blouses or tops don’t feel especially damp coming out of the washing machine? That’s the reason. This also means polyester dries quickly. Use the permanent press setting for its medium heat or hang dry. Polyester is subject to static cling, as it rubs against other clothes in the dryer, so using a Bounce® dryer sheet is a good idea. Avoid overheating because that causes polyester fibers to ripple and can damage the clothes over time.

Baby Clothes

The biggest takeaway about baby clothes is that they’re tiny. In addition to being so cute that they might just make you want to have another baby, their diminutive size means they dry very fast. As such, permanent press or the delicate cycle work best for baby clothes. It’s also another reason not to mix baby clothes with heavier laundry that would dry at a different rate. In our home, I needed our baby clothes to be static free but unscented. That’s why I used hypoallergenic dryer sheets when doing my little one’s laundry.

Favorite Jeans

Good jeans are hard to find and when you do find that magic pair, you want to keep them forever. Jeans that are 100 percent cotton can go through the dry cycle on the high heat setting since they’re heavier and take longer to dry. However, time the dry cycle so you pull them just as they get close to finishing drying to prevent over-drying and shrinkage. Jeans that have stretch are subject to the same concerns of stretchy clothes in general. Pull them from the dryer while damp so they can finish air-drying or air-dry them straight out of the wash.

Knits

Your favorite thick sweaters will hold their shape better if you allow them to dry flat. Never hang-dry heavy knits they because they’ll warp. Light knits can be dried in the dryer but you should dry them using the permanent press setting.

Intimates

Lingerie, lace, and bras are all delicate and should dry flat. This helps bras retain their shape and prevents things from getting snagged in the dryer. Everyday intimates like cotton underwear or briefs can withstand drying just fine, though the permanent press setting is optimal since high heat will deteriorate elastic over time.

In a perfect world, we’d line-dry our laundry in a flower field while the sun shone on our perfect hair and our perfectly behaved kids, but that’s not real life and frankly, no one has time for that. Use this guide to the job done effectively so you can get back to what matters to you while always looking your best.

2 GENERAL INFORMATION

2.1 The essence of the drying method

This method of drying products is based on the use of the properties of infrared radiation, harmless to the environment and humans. Infrared radiation is actively absorbed by the water contained in the product and is not absorbed by the fabric of the product. Therefore, moisture removal is possible at a low temperature, which makes it possible to almost completely preserve vitamins and biologically active substances. The high density of infrared radiation actively destroys the harmful microflora of the product, so that it can be stored for a long time without compromising quality.

2.2 Advantages of this method of drying

With short soaking, the product restores its properties: natural aroma, taste and can be subjected to various types of cooking.

The product after drying decreases in volume by 3-4 times, and in mass by 4-8 times (depending on its type).

Infra-red dried dry foods allow you to cook high-quality food without prolonged heat treatment and without excess liquid consumption. This contributes to better and faster digestibility of food.

- connect the dryer to temporary and faulty electrical networks;

- connect the dryer to the mains with a damaged power cord;

- install and store the dryer in the same room with flammable, poisonous, explosive substances;

- use a defective dryer.

6 DRYER DESIGN

The dryer is shown in Figure 1.

The dryer consists of a metal body 1, a removable cover 2. Through rectangular holes in the front panel, trays 3 are inserted along the guides. The trays are designed to place products (vegetables, fruits, berries, mushrooms, herbs, herbs, etc.). On the side panel there are: an illuminated power switch 4 and a fuse 5.

Inside the body of the dryer on the back wall, in accordance with Figure 2, a lamp 6 is installed, which is a source of

infrared radiation and a fan 5, which contributes to a faster removal of moisture from the product .

7 WORKING PRINCIPLE

Two trays with prepared raw materials for drying are installed in the dryer. When the dryer is turned on, the KGT lamp heats by means of infrared radiation. When the temperature reaches (65+10) °C, the thermal switch turns off the lamp and the heating stops. Air exchange is ensured by the inflow of fresh air through the holes on the rear panel and the exhaust of the exhaust air through the ventilation holes on the side panels of the dryer. The fan circulates the air inside the dryer.

If the thermal switch at (65+10) °C does not work, the dryer will turn off when the temperature reaches

(90±5) °С by the emergency thermal switch. In this case, you need to call a specialist to fix the problem.

The electrical circuit diagram is shown in Figure 3.

During drying, it is recommended to agitate the product to be dried 2-3 times without turning off the dryer. Leave the resulting product in the air at a temperature not lower than 20 ° C for 5-7 hours, this helps to equalize the humidity.

8 PREPARING THE DRYER FOR OPERATION

ATTENTION! When storing the dryer at sub-zero temperatures, it is necessary to keep the dryer

at room temperature without packaging for at least two hours before connecting it to the network.

Unpack the dryer.

Unpack the KGT lamp. For what, take out the top tray, remove the lid from the dryer, unpack the lamp, put the lid back in place.

ATTENTION! Do not touch the KGT lamp with your hands. All work with the lamp should be done with gloves.

9 HOW TO USE

Preparing food

Wash all food to be dried and cut into strips, cubes or circles. Dry the stems and leaves of the herbs separately. The thicker the layer of raw materials on the tray, the longer the drying time.

Arrange the food to be dried evenly in a single layer without overlapping on the trays. Install the trays in the dryer. Connect the product to the mains, turn the illuminated switch to the working position.
