How to Choose the Right Area Rug for Under Your Bed

Cold bedroom floors are challenging in the morning. Make it easier to get out of bed on those oh-so-early mornings by putting down an area rug that's large enough to give your feet a soft landing. Even if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, layer up your bedroom rugs by adding a cozy area rug under your bed to muffle sound and add color, texture, and pattern to your space. Another benefit to an area rug is that it can make a small space look bigger. To make sure your area rug is well-proportioned for your size bed, consider the following guidelines.

The 9 Best Area Rugs of 2022

What Should Sit on the Area Rug?

Determining a good size bedroom area rug seems like a simple question but it requires some thought. A square or rectangular area rug works best under any size bed. But in addition to a bed, you might have two nightstands and a bench by the foot of your bed. You'll need to make a few small choices about what goes on top of your area rug which means you don't want an area rug that is too small for the room. There are four options when it comes to placing an area rug under your bed:

You don't want to end up with half of your table legs on the area rug. It'll make for a precarious situation when you go to put your glass of water on a wobbly nightstand. The same problem may happen at the foot of your bed. Half of your bench sitting on an area rug can cause you to feel slightly lopsided and unbalanced when you sit down.

Area Rug Sizes for a Small Bedroom

If your bedroom is small, you could always get a small bedroom area rug for the side of your bed, Instead, think big when it comes to bedroom rug ideas. In a smaller room, select a rug that's large enough to nearly fill up the entire space and it will visually enlarge the room. Be sure to leave between 2 inches and 5 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls.

If you have a twin-size or full-size bed in a small room, use these general guidelines for the size area rug you'll need. Note that twin-size beds typically measure about 39 inches wide by 75 inches long (a twin XL, designed for taller people, measures 80 inches long). A full-size bed, or double bed, measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.

Area Rug Sizes for a Large Bedroom

Choosing a rug that's too small for a large bedroom will throw the space off balance. If you do choose a large rug that fills up most of the room, leave at least 8 inches of space between the edges of the rug and the walls.

In a larger room, you may have a queen-size or king-size bed. Use these rough guidelines to choose an area rug that will look good in a big bedroom. Take into consideration the measurements of larger beds. A queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A king-size bed measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. A California king-size bed measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long.

Area Rugs Under Dressers

Regardless of the size of your bedroom or bed, an area rug should not push up against the edge or legs of a dresser or other large piece of furniture. Choose a rug that's large enough to fully slip underneath the entire dresser. Or, pick an area rug small enough so that you can leave at least 2 inches or 3 inches of floor showing between the edge of the rug and the piece of furniture.

Choosing Style and Material

Area rugs come in all styles, textures, materials, and pile heights. The best bedroom rugs are typically plush and high-pile, and the most comfortable types of area rugs for bedrooms are soft cottons, smooth silk blends, sumptuous polyesters, and fun faux furs. A wool area rug may be strong, warm, and beautiful in a more formal or traditional-style bedroom. Decide if you want your area rug to be calming and grounding or a splash of drama in your bedroom so you can choose an appropriate color and pattern.

Rug Pads and Maintenance

Even when your area rug is under the bed, the edges can still bunch up to cause a tripping hazard. Double-sided carpet tape is one of the best solutions. Alternatively, a nonslip rug mat placed under the entire area rug will keep the edges down.

Place a rug pad underneath your rug. A rug pad has numerous benefits, such as adding another layer of soft cushioning underfoot, it reduces noise in the room, and it insulates the space from a cold subfloor. A felt rug pad is cushiony while a rubber rug pad will help the rug better stay in place on a bare floor.

Keep your area rug looking new with the right maintenance. An area rug under the weight of a bed will become indented. Take care to turn your area rug every so often so you can remove the indentations with an ice cube treatment. Let a small ice cube melt on the indentation, then fluff up the fibers with your fingers. Just be sure you thoroughly dry the spots you've iced so you don't accidentally step into a puddle of cold water in the morning.

Bedrooms are highly personal spaces, so it’s no surprise when people dedicate a lot of time and effort into making sure the decor is perfect for their needs. I moved into a new apartment last month and have spent the past few weeks tweaking my styling, trying out different layouts, and rearranging just about everything.

For more content like this follow

The only constant? The plush, geometric rug that sits under my bed. It was actually the first thing I purchased for my new room, and I absolutely love having something soft underfoot when I get out of bed in the morning. But when I started browsing for the perfect rug, I kind of had no idea what size would look right under my bed. The nuLOOM rug I fell in love with comes in six different sizes, and even though I measured everything out before deciding on the 5′ x 8′ option, it wasn’t until I placed the physical rug under my bed that I really understood what it would look like.

So to make it a little easier on all of us, we came up with these handy visual guides so you can see what three of the most common area rug sizes will look like under the four standard bed sizes: twin, full, queen, and king.

Twin beds measure 38 inches wide and 75 inches long, making them by far the smallest of the common bed sizes. So pairing a single twin bed with a 5′ by 8′ rug is always a safe bet. But if the room is on the bigger side, an 8′ by 10′ rug can work too, especially if the rest of the furniture is on the sizable side. Going with a 9′ by 12′ option might be a little bit of a stretch, unless the rug extends to all four walls, almost mimicking the look of carpet.

Similar to twin beds, fulls are 75 inches long, but have a much more substantial 54 inches in width. If your bedroom is on the smaller side (like mine, thanks NYC) a 5′ by 8′ rug will work just fine, but if you’ve got the space, going for one of the larger sizes will make a bigger visual impact.

On the larger side of the spectrum, queen beds measure in at 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. This means a smaller rug, like the 5′ by 8′ option is almost visually lost. The 8′ by 10′ option or even going all the way up to 9′ by 12′ gives the rug more breathing room.

If you’re lucky enough to come home to a 76 inch by 80 inch king bed, 1. I am incredibly jealous, but 2. There’s no real need to even consider a 5′ by 8′ rug, as it will barely peek out from under your bedding. Bigger is better in this case, and we love the look of a substantial 9′ by 12′ rug paired with a king, but an 8′ by 10′ option works as well.

So next time you’re in the market for a bedroom area rug and not sure what size to go for, just look back at these illustrations instead of relying on your imagination.

The bedroom is an ideal room for carpet placement, because it is often walked barefoot, and the likelihood of planting a hard-to-remove stain is minimized. As a result, on the one hand, there is unlimited scope for imagination, on the other hand, confusion if you do not know how to choose and where to lay the carpet in the bedroom. We will talk about the choice and proper placement in this article.

The need for a carpet in the bedroom often causes controversy, but if its wall placement in a modern interior is not always appropriate, then the comfort of using bedside rugs is usually beyond doubt.

And if we talk about the functions of the floor carpet, then in the bedroom it provides:

An interesting fact: carpets are not only beautiful and functional, but also healthy.

Woolen carpets help maintain a stable microclimate in the room, and medium and long pile rugs, regardless of the pile material, also provide a massage effect for the feet when walking on them barefoot. In general, additional properties depend on the composition of the carpet.

All carpets are made from natural or synthetic materials, and the composition is monocomponent and mixed. Suitable options for the bedroom, we will consider further.

Natural - wool, cotton, fur, silk

Wool is the most popular natural material, although it is quite expensive. Woolen carpets are durable, retain heat best of all and have an elastic fluffy pile. They are appropriate in the bedroom due to the restrained palette of colors, which is due to the peculiarity of the woolen thread - it is difficult to dye in very bright colors. These carpets are valued for their ability to accumulate moisture when it is in excess in the air and give it away when it is deficient. Disadvantages of wool: demanding care and the likelihood of allergies in people prone to it. Manufacturers compensate for the first drawback by adding synthetics to the composition, the second - by impregnating the pile.

Cotton is an environmentally friendly material, hygroscopic and pleasant to the touch. Usually cotton carpets are used in children's rooms, but you can find interesting options for bedrooms. One has only to keep in mind that cotton carpets are not very durable, shrink after washing and quickly fade in direct sunlight.

Fur carpets are usually made from sheepskin, less often from goat and alpaca skins. Not technically woven rugs, these rugs are loved by fans of the exotic for their unusual designs and natural textures. But they also have a significant drawback - demanding care, otherwise they will quickly lose their attractiveness.

Silk is the most expensive natural material. Handmade carpets woven from it adorn the interior with an exquisite design. But due to the price and mediocre thermal insulation properties, silk rugs are rarely found in bedrooms.

Viscose is called artificial silk and is more often used in the bedroom, but it also provides poor heat and sound insulation. But the viscose carpet is similar to natural silk and is suitable for underfloor heating.

Synthetic materials - polypropylene, acrylic, nylon, polyester

Polypropylene carpets are popular due to their practicality, variety of colors and price range. And if hard rugs made of BCF polypropylene are not the best choice for a bedroom, then products with a hit-set or frieze pile will please not only with their design and cost, but also with the pleasant texture of an elastic pile.

Acrylic is visually and tactilely similar to natural wool and costs less than it, but at the same time it is more expensive than other types of synthetics. But if you want to decorate the bedroom with a beautiful and warm hypoallergenic rug, then you will like the option with acrylic pile.

Nylon is commonly woven into low-pile carpets, notable for their durability and pleasant velvety texture. And this is a universal choice in a situation if you prefer to walk around the room in slippers and barefoot.

Abrasion resistant and polyester. Unpretentious in everyday life and diverse in design, polyester rugs have a good price-life ratio, so long pile designs are often used to decorate bedrooms.

Shape and size are important characteristics of a rug, along with material and color, and together they affect the perception of a rug in a bedroom space.

Size selection

By size, all carpets are divided into three groups - small (up to 3 m²), medium (3-6 m²) and large (from 6 m²). The appropriate size of carpet depends on where you plan to install it.

Small rugs often draw attention to a separate area and create a contrast or addition to one of the colors of the interior. The most common location is on either side of the bed, or in any area but over a larger rug.

Medium carpets are most convenient to use when highlighting a specific area - for sleeping or relaxing, changing clothes, and so on. Accordingly, they are placed next to a bed or a corner sofa, in front of a dressing table, wardrobe or chest of drawers.

A large carpet, depending on the size of the room, can cover the entire floor or be a zoning tool. Oversized carpet in the bedroom is always a background element of the interior, so you should choose a design with calm colors and an unobtrusive pattern.

An easy way to determine the right size is to outline the outline of the future carpet on the floor with masking tape. This trick will help you figure out how appropriate a carpet product of various dimensions looks in a selected area.

Shape selection

In the bedroom, rectangular, square and oval carpets are commonly used.

Rectangle and square are a classic solution for any part of the room and the way the carpet is placed. An oval carpet draws attention with rounded edges, so it is best used to emphasize the elegance and flowing outlines of the foot of the bed, dressing table or mirror, pouffe, armchair or sofa.

Non-standard forms of carpet products or skins look stylish and unusual, but require some care in placement, because there is only one step from originality to bad taste.

In the interior of the bedroom, the carpet can serve as an accent or background element, and the appropriate color will depend on the role. It is worth considering an important nuance: a light-colored carpet product looks better on a dark floor covering, and vice versa.

When creating a harmonious backdrop, it is best to use a medium to large-sized carpet in pastel colors and with an unobtrusive pattern. Its color can be matched to match other textile elements of the interior. A good example: cream curtains and a milky white bedspread look good with a beige or chocolate-colored carpet - depending on whether it will be bedded on a dark floor or on a light one.

A simple and elegant solution is to choose one or two non-contrasting colors as the main ones for decorating the bedroom and complement them with a similar shade of carpet.

The bed can match the carpet in color, but differ in shade - otherwise you risk getting an inexpressive color spot instead of the central element of the bedroom. In this case, a contrast would be a better option: the tone of the carpet is chosen in accordance with the colors of the textiles, but differs in color from the furniture.

If the carpet is assigned the role of an accent element of the interior, then choosing a color to match the walls can be a good solution. So, in a bedroom with furniture and textiles in natural beige-brown tones, the walls and the carpet in white, pearl gray, pink, blue or green look harmonious.

A good example of a contrasting combination is a rich raspberry, purple or light green carpet in a black and white interior. However, the choice of color in should be treated with caution - too bright and invigorating shades in the bedroom can interfere with relaxation. When creating contrast, choose either deep and clean tones, or an expressive pattern with a companion in the surrounding interior.

The traditional location of the carpet is near the bed, in the so-called barefoot area. In this case, the choice of the size of the carpet directly depends on the dimensions and methods of furniture placement relative to the carpet. Three of these methods can be distinguished:

  1. The bed and bedside tables are on the carpet. The carpet product can match the length of the bed or go beyond it by 0.5-0.7 m, not only on the sides, but also at the foot.
  2. The bed stands with two legs on the carpet, which covers almost the entire floor under it. With this arrangement, the edge of the carpet adjoins the bedside tables, but their legs are on the floor. The carpet goes beyond the boundaries of the bed by 0. 5-0.7 m on two or three sides.
  3. The carpet is laid across and covers half or a third of the space under the bed, going beyond it for any distance. A convenient solution for simultaneously covering the bare area and the entrance of the bedroom with a carpet product.

These options allow you to effectively highlight the bare area and are optimal for low and medium pile carpets. Carpet products with a long pile can also be laid in this way, but it is worth bearing in mind the additional difficulties in care, and it is desirable to have a bed with thin legs in order to reduce the deformation area.

Alternatively, you can lay not one large carpet, but two or three smaller ones. It is more convenient, practical and often cheaper. You can also stock up on several sets of different rugs, changing and combining them according to your mood.

A more complex option for placing the carpet is asymmetric. To do this, they buy a non-standard-shaped carpet product or place an ordinary rectangular or oval rug at an angle relative to the bed. But such an approach requires an artistic eye, because creating a balanced geometric fragmentation is not an easy task.

Carpet is also often covered on the floor at the foot of the bed and the area between it and the closet or dressing table.

For the correct choice of design and size, it is enough to answer three questions.

Where do you plan to lay the carpet and why?

To create an accent within one zone, you can choose a bright rug with an original pattern. In this case, you can consider options for an unusual shape - in the form of a skin, a flower or a leaf of a plant. For zoning a spacious room, it is convenient to use several medium-sized carpets - the main thing is to choose them so that the designs combine and complement each other.

If you need to set the tone for the whole room with a rug, a large or medium rug will work, depending on the size of the bedroom.

Do you like long hair?

If you like a long pile and you are ready to take care of it properly, then a shaggy carpet by the bed will be an ideal option. But it should be borne in mind that although it is possible to put furniture on it, it is undesirable, and often, instead of one large carpet product, it is advisable to purchase two or three smaller rugs. If the bedroom space allows, you can lay one medium rug to the side, creating a separate seating area on the floor.

Well, if you are not ready to properly care for a long pile, you can choose an equally interesting and warm medium pile carpet. The most practical, of course, are low-pile carpet products, and among them you can easily find original options with embossed ornaments.

Do you know about the peculiarities of color perception?

The color of the carpet affects the perception of the space around it. This should be borne in mind when choosing, because:

Knowing these features and choosing the right carpet, you can easily create the right atmosphere in the bedroom.

And although the article presents many successful examples, we present you a selection of photos with interesting carpets in bedrooms of different styles.

How to make a bedside rug for the bedroom with your own hands

In the morning it's nice to get up with bare feet on a soft stylish bedside rug for the bedroom. Then awakening will not happen as abruptly as if you were getting up on a cold floor.

You can make a bedside rug for the bedroom with your own hands and for this you do not need to know how to sew. You can make it from different materials: old T-shirts, soft yarn or pebbles. Then you will always be pleased to wake up and put your feet on the bedside rug for the bedroom.

Bedside rug for child's bedroom

When the child grows up and gets out of bed on his own, he will need a baby floor mat. It can be made from unnecessary scraps:

  1. Prepare thick fabric, synthetic winterizer, shreds.
  2. Cut out two rectangles from the main fabric according to the size of your future product.
  3. Cut out 15x15 cm squares from the scraps.
  4. Stuff them with padding polyester and sew the edges together to form pads.
  5. Sew these pads to the base. You can lay out a pattern of multi-colored pads, arrange them like a rainbow or randomly.
  6. Close the back side with another rectangle. Finish the edges with tape.

    Varieties

Carpet in front of the bed with buttons

Bedroom bedside rug with buttons will help prevent flat feet, in addition to its main function. You can take it to daycare so your child can put it beside their bed for naps. How to sew:

  1. Prepare cotton, flannel, buttons and thread.
  2. From cotton, cut out two rectangles according to the size of the product. From flannel - one of the same rectangle.
  3. Put all the pieces together and sew them with a sewing machine or by hand.
  4. Finish the edges with edging.
  5. Carefully sew on the buttons. You can arrange them randomly, in a checkerboard pattern, or assemble a pattern from buttons of the same color.

T-shirt bed rugs

Don't throw away your old T-shirts because you can make a bedroom rug out of them. Stages of work:

  1. Prepare 5-10 T-shirts, scissors, thread, needle. You can sew them by hand or on a sewing machine.
  2. It is necessary to cut the T-shirts so that they turn into one long thread. To do this, spread them out and make cuts on both sides, not reaching the edge. There are videos online showing how to do this.
  3. From the resulting threads, start weaving a pigtail. The beginning can be fixed on a sewing machine or tie a knot.
  4. Spiral the pigtail to make a round rug. Fold tightly so that there are no empty areas.
  5. Zigzag all layers with a sewing machine or by hand.
  6. If it is not tight enough, sew on a backing made of a dense material such as felt.

Rugs next to the bed with pom-poms

  1. T-shirts cut into strips 1-2 cm wide. The length does not matter.
  2. Cut out circles from thick cardboard. The outer diameter depends on the desired pom pom size. The inner circle should be a few centimeters smaller, it also needs to be cut out. As a result, the blanks must have holes through which the fabric will be wound.
  3. Put one strip between two circles, this will be the fixing thread.
  4. Wrap the circles with ribbons. The tighter you wrap them, the fuller the pom-pom will be.
  5. Cut them along the outside diameter of the circle between two cardboard boxes.
  6. Tie the warp thread into a knot.
  7. Trim protruding bands if necessary. Fluff up the pom-pom.
  8. Make several blanks in this way and sew them together to make a rug.

Soft rug next to the bed

Pompoms can be cut from yarn, then the rug will be softer and more pleasant to the feet than from T-shirts. How to make:

  1. Use different colors of yarn and a special fork. If you do not have such a device, you can make a cardboard blank, as in the previous example.
  2. Make 120-200 pom poms depending on the size of your rug.
  3. Sew them onto a special mesh backing or heavy fabric.

    Feet

You can make an animal figure for the rug in front of the baby bed. How to make a pompom bear:

  1. Make 60 white body pom-poms, 8 cm in diameter.
  2. Make additional 3 pink pompoms for the nose and ears, 5 cm in diameter.
  3. Crochet white yarn for a round head and outstretched paws. Use brown yarn to make ears and a mouth. With pink yarn, knit small circles for the paw pads.
  4. Sew all crochet details for the wall rug above the bed, as well as pompoms, to the main fabric. Embroider eyes with black thread.

    Scheme

Bed mat - the beach at home

It's so nice to walk on warm pebbles that keep your feet warm. It is not necessary to go to the beach for this, you can make a stylish pebble rug right in the bedroom. And if you place it near the window, then the morning sun will heat the stones before you wake up, and the morning will become even more pleasant. Stages of work:

  1. Collect river or sea pebbles. It is advisable to take flat ones so that it is convenient to stick and walk on them.
  2. As a base, you can take fabric, rubber, mosaic mesh, cork.
  3. Glue the stones to the base with Moment glue or a glue gun.
  4. If you want to lay out a pattern of stones of different colors, then do this before gluing.
  5. Try to lay out the stones so that there is no free space between them.

This coating will perform an orthopedic function, protecting you from flat feet. In addition, some believe that stones have energy and you can “recharge” from them. You can test it out for yourself by making this bedside rug for your bedroom.

Pom pom making process

Wall decoration

In the children's room, rugs are often hung on the wall above the baby's bed. The panels serve as an interior decoration, and also attract the baby with bright colors.

If you know how to sew, you can make a children's rug on the wall by the bed with appliqué by yourself:

  1. Gather the materials you will need to make your own DIY wall rug: white, blue, green, orange, brown, and gray felt, soft fabric for the base, and ribbon for finishing the edges.
  2. From the base fabric, cut out two rectangles 50x70 cm. You can take another size for your room.
  3. Draw forest animals on felt: a fox, a hedgehog, a deer, an owl. Cut out their pieces and sew.
  4. Cut birch trunks from white felt and make characteristic black stripes on them.
  5. Lay out the blue sky, green grass, birches and animals on the base. Try to choose their sizes in such a way as to create a perspective: the animals and trees closest to the viewer should be larger.
  6. Sew all parts to the base by machine or by hand.
  7. Close the back of the rug above the bed with another base rectangle. Sew around the edges with a piping.
  8. Sew eyelets on the back to make it convenient to hang the mat on the wall next to the bed.

This is only a part of the options for making a do-it-yourself rug over the bed. They can be placed near the bed or sofa in the living room, then your feet will be warm and soft. And some of them will also perform a massage function.
