In emerald, olive, or a host of other appealing shades, it’s a great choice, but what about green couch living room ideas to make the space harmonious?

In fact there are a whole variety of ways to complement this beautiful seating choice within a living room scheme whether you want a room with contemporary credentials or a more traditional appeal.

Realize your living room ideas whichever tone of green you selected for your couch with this guide, and take advice from the experts, too.

Green couch living room ideas

A green couch will always make an impact no matter whether it’s part of small living room ideas or selected for a larger space. Be inspired to create the perfect setting with these suggestions.

1. Team an emerald green couch with softer tones

'The emerald green couch creates a striking focal point in this airy living room which we softened by incorporating a variety of natural materials including warm wooden furniture with smooth lines, a long pile wool rug and quieter accents such as the textured cushions and the plants to bring the space together,' says Katie Lion, senior interior designer at Kitesgrove .

2. Opt for millwork in paler greens

If your living room sofa ideas have led you to a green couch in a deep shade of the color, it can be combined with millwork in paler tones for a living room that’s harmonious and impactful.

'Fresh, optimistic and soothing, green is having a moment in interior design,' says Suzy McMahon, buying director at Sofology . ‘Green is a particularly popular choice, providing a soft, restful color that can be built upon.

‘Combine with neutral furniture and simple accessories to create a modern minimalist look or introduce metallics and intricate details, such as fluting, for an opulent feel.’

3. Create contrast with blush pink walls

Looking for green couch living room ideas that will create a sophisticated but relaxing room? 'You can't beat blush pink and a vibrant green – they're a soothing combination when used together and you can play with the ratios to create an elegant living room,’ says Lucy Searle, global editor in chief, Homes & Gardens.

‘This contemporary green couch is the focal point of the living room design, but is well supported by the shades of rose and blush teamed with the textures from the rug and wooden floor.’

4. Use lemon yellow as a bright accent

'When it comes to living room layout ideas, you can really add a fresh feel and bring the outdoors in by using the color green,’ says Emma Deterding, founder and creative director at Kelling Designs . ‘The rich green of this velvet couch adds a pop of color that helps bring the outdoors in, and like foliage in the garden, can be paired with any color easily.

‘We've used accents in yellows, neutrals and other green shades to add depth and warmth to the space, whilst richer patterns help add interest.’

5. Use a fabric as a color starting point

(Image credit: Kim Armstrong Interior Design/Nathan Shroder)

Rather than starting from there, green couch living room ideas might begin from another element of the room, including the pattern that’s key to a cozy living room design.

'Many of my designs begin from fabric inspiration,' says Kim Armstrong, principal designer and owner of Kim Armstrong Interior Design . ‘This one is no different. The room design came from the Cowtan & Tout fabric that we selected and used on the pair of upholstered chairs, and on the drapes. This fabric has a reddish background mixed with gold, green, salmon, and beige. Once we had this as the main pattern in the room, I wanted to make sure the couch selection was visually balanced.

‘I wanted to balance a cooler color tone with the red Cowtan & Tout, which naturally led to green. Green and red are complementary colors, and I like the way the energy is distributed when you pair them together. To make sure the room didn’t come off looking like “Christmas” I made sure the green was earthy, yet still vibrant. I wanted colors that still felt fresh, but were also sophisticated.

‘For the couch fabric I was looking for just the right balance of an earthy-fresh green color that also had a great hand to it.  I found the perfect velvet that had all the elements I was looking for with this Brunschwig & Fils velvet – it had the perfect color, and softness.’

6. Team a green floral print with a plain couch

Consider a patterned version among your green couch living room ideas. 'If you’re looking to bring both color and pattern into your living room, but don’t want to turn to wallpaper or curtains to do so, a couch in a timeless floral motif, like our Olivia in Emma Sage fabric, can work wonders,' says George Miller, home designer at Neptune .

‘By settling on a pattern featuring just one color, such as green, you can use additional seating upholstered in the same (or similar) shade to enhance the pattern and create a coherent overall look. Natural materials, such as wood and wicker accessories, will make the whole space sing.’

7. Add a contemporary edge with an accent of black

Settled for a green couch in sage? 'Sage green is the on-trend shade this year and this light-filled living room shows how well you can use it with other colors,' says Jennifer Ebert, digital editor, Homes & Gardens.  ‘It blends really well with blush, stone and sunshine yellow accessories, but what sets it off is the jet black window frames and floor, which gives the room a modern edge.’

8. Accessorize with earthy tones and organic shapes

‘When it comes to choosing a couch, I think people can sometimes shy away from green because they feel it’s quite a bold choice, but actually it can be surprisingly calming if you accessorise it properly,' says Sue Jones, co-founder and creative director at OKA .

‘A jewel-toned green, such as OKA’s Persian Green in our new “clever velvet”, paired with a soft palette of charcoal and beige, can bring a really relaxing feel to your living room.’

9. Use more than one shade of green

'The formal, Chinoiserie inspired wallpaper in this sunny sitting room sets a vibrant tone but a low couch in relaxed olive green linens tempers the strength and adds an easy going casual air to the room. I always say that green is nature’s neutral and a soft olive always looks great with more vibrant shades,' says Tricia Guild, OBE, founder and creative director at Designers Guild .

10. Set the scene with apple green

'This bold and beautiful apple green couch takes pride of place in this living room,' says Melanie Griffiths, editor, Period Living. ‘The vibrant shade can be seen in the trailing floral wallpaper which gives the whole a space a cohesive feel. Follow the shade through into the accessories: think vases, coffee table books and plants.’

11. Ditch the plain and opt for a checked couch

While a plain green couch can be the star of the show, don’t rule out a checked motif.

'Checks add a laid back, relaxed feeling and when the texture is a washed nubbly linen – even more so! Here our Brera Piazza green and ecru large scale checked couch has a timeless quality,' says Tricia Guild, OBE, founder and creative director at Designers Guild .

Is a green couch good for a living room?

A green couch is a versatile choice for a living room. ‘For a harmonious look, you can choose colors adjacent to green on the color wheel,’ says Lucy Searle, global editor in chief, Homes & Gardens. ‘Blue greens and yellow greens work beautifully with greens.

‘Or go for green’s complement using the mauve pinks from the opposite side of the wheel for a more vibrant effect.’

What pillow color goes with a green couch?

Pillow colors that go with a green couch need to take their cue from the shade. A deep rich green couch and graphic patterned pillows in black and white looks sophisticated, or opt for a rosy pink. Pillows in blue and white prints work well on olive-toned couches or opt for those in warm yellow. Tones of the couch’s green on plain or patterned pillows are always winners, too.

12 of the Best Green Couch Living Room Decorating Ideas • That Sweet Tea Life

I’m sure if you have clicked on this article, you are no stranger to the green couch trend swooping over Pinterest these days. And let me say, I am so here for it. Recently, greens and neutral colors have been making a big comeback in the decorating world as neutrals and more modern pieces have overtaken most home decor stores.

But how exactly do you decorate around a stunning new green couch? In this article, we are going to go over some of the best ways to transform your space into a masterpiece where relaxation and functionality are essential. Keep reading to see the trendiest green couch living room decorating ideas.

Everything About Decorating the Walls

Green is a cool-toned neutral color by nature that creates a relaxed atmosphere. Because there is so much green in nature, when it comes to green couch living room decorating ideas, I like to bring other colors found in nature to a space to blend with green accent pieces or furniture.

Paint

When changing up your current living room decor, picking a new paint color is one of the best things to start with, especially if you’re going with an all-over new look. With green couch living room decorating ideas as your inspiration, gravitate towards natural color schemes such as browns, tans, greys, beige, yellow, pink, or off-white.

Depending on your style, you can either go more warm-toned or cool for your green couch living room decorating ideas. Both work wonderfully well with a green couch. Stay away from reds as this tends to come across as more holiday-themed, but if you’re looking for a statement color, you can choose either purple or orange.

Wall Art

Just adding some statement art pieces can change the vibe of your whole living room. With the new green couch trend, you can add almost any art style and wood tone to the space while trying out green couch living room decorating ideas, and it will blend beautifully.

Modern art pieces seem to be in high demand. If you visit any home decor store, you may see these pieces lining the shelves of the art department. Bringing in simple art pieces makes a statement without causing too much distraction and can be made to match the other decor in your home.

Mirrors

Next on the list of green couch living room decorating ideas, let’s talk about mirrors! Adding mirrors to a living room adds some design aspects and brings in more natural light. They can make a room appear larger and are helpful when decorating a long living room.

When decorating with mirrors to compliment your green couch lean towards more modern mirrors, pick one with a unique shape or such as round or oval which is extremely trendy at this time.

Plant Hangers

Adding in some extra greenery such as plants, real or faux, breathes life into a living room. Macrame has been extra popular over the past few years, and it is not going out of style anytime soon, so it’s the perfect addition to our list of green couch living room decorating ideas. Add some dimension to a room by adding some plant hangers in different colors and textures.

You can also play around with the pots and containers that hold the plant, allowing you an opportunity to bring in some more texture and interest with your green couch living room decorating ideas.

All About the Floors

Whether you are thinking of refinishing, adding, taking away, or just adding a new area rug, your floors can add another exciting design aspect to your living room.

Dark stained wood floors, whether laminate or hardwood, add depth and drama to a space, whereas light-colored floors make intense colors pop. So depending on your design style, either would go great with a green couch.

Area Rugs

Adding area rugs brings more color, texture, and warmth to a space. If you have only hardwood or laminate flooring, adding a large area rug is always a nice touch to soften the room. When thinking about green couch living room decorating ideas, go for more natural colors with black accents or grey accents and choose an allover lighter or darker shade than the actual floor.

Area rugs are an excellent opportunity to play with colors as well. Add in some oranges, yellows, purples, and even pinks to brighten up your space and add in some design interest.

Ottomans and Coffee Tables

An ottoman or coffee table helps with storage or is a great place to put your feet up after a long day, but they also add a height differential to a room. When you have a space where all the furniture and accents are at the same height, it’s a bit flat and dull to the eye. You want some pieces of different sizes to add an all-over interest to a living room, large or small.

What’s great is that any color, style, or vibe can go well with a green couch. If you’re looking for more modern, you can add in golds and blacks, and maybe you are more on the bohemian side with natural materials and light wood tones. Either way, you can design a space using your green couch as inspiration.

Let’s Talk Furniture

When thinking of green couch living room decorating ideas, the type of furniture you choose depends on your personal style. Wood furnishings are always a safe bet when it comes to this, and you can pick any tone of wood that suits your liking.

Jewel tones such as deep reds, golds, and emeralds also make more of a dramatic appearance that can add some interest to your area. Black and white pieces have the same effect and bring a more modern touch.

Anything with a lot of fine detailing and carved designs brings a sense of formality, whereas unfinished wood pieces like knotty pine or oak create a natural atmosphere.

It’s all About the Accents

My favorite part of decorating is adding in my accent pieces. Accents are where I feel you can bring your style to your space and sets it apart from any other home. It brings a sense of relaxation and peace when you can sit down in a room that feels like you.

Boho and Natural Accents

In recent years we have seen a massive upturn in the bohemian style of interior decorating, and that style is here to stay for a while longer.

Boho style is all about bringing the outdoors in and creating a natural space. It’s less formal and more about natural pieces. Boho is a perfect style to bring in when decorating around a green couch because, in essence, green is a representation of nature.

When thinking of boho and natural accents, opt for greenery, pampas grass, natural colored stone vases, and macrame. Usually, with boho styles, you will see a lot of natural wood and light colors with a dark pop for some contrast. It’s all about being light and airy.

Modern Black and Gold Accents

On the opposing side of the spectrum, you can choose to add some more modern and contemporary styles to your living room.

Gold and Black accents have made a big comeback in the interior decorating world. More iron pieces and glass now fill the shelves of your favorite home decor stores, and you see less of the farmhouse style.

Black and gold accents give off a more formal feel, but you can turn it into a relaxing, comfortable space with the following two accent ideas.

Blush Pink and Grey Accents

To soften the look while keeping it trendy, gravitate towards blush pink and grey accent pieces.

Blush pinks add a softness to the space and blend perfectly with a dark green couch. If you want to keep it minimal, you can swap the blush pinks for a soft grey.

The best thing with greys is mixing and matching different greys to create some interest in the space.

Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are a fantastic way to add some texture to your space. The newest trend is less of matching all of the throw pillows in your living room and choosing multiple sizes and styles to create an inviting atmosphere.

Changing up the throw pillows is also an inexpensive option for adding some eye-catching accents with green couch living room decorating ideas. Try adding some fluffier whimsical pillows next to some square or circle throws to make it even more trendy.

Throw Blankets

Just like throw pillows, adding some extra blankets is functional for your comfort and makes a room have a relaxed feel. Pull in wall colors or other accent colors when choosing a throw blanket to drape over your couch.

It gives the space a coziness and brings in more textures. Play around with fringes and styles just like you would with your throw pillows to unify the entire room.

Green sofa in the interior - photos, design ideas, design features of rooms with a green sofa

Styles in the interior Reading time 6 minutes

Natural shades bring an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort to the space. The green sofa acts as an accent, which is not only associated with comfort and relaxation, but also sets the right mood for the room. We will figure out how to properly use furniture in fashionable colors.

Features green

Fresh natural gamma favorably affects the state of a person and his mood. The harmonious palette evokes a sense of security and calmness, which is why it can often be found in the bedroom and nursery. In the living room, color adds air and visually enlarges the space, in the kitchen it helps to create home comfort, and in the office it sets up mental activity.

A rich palette, which is associated with the depth of the forest and the freshness of the grass, catches the eye - upholstered furniture in such colors will definitely become a bright element of the interior. The variety of green makes it possible to choose it for any style and taking into account the wishes of the apartment owners.

Another plus is that the upholstery looks different in different materials. The fleecy surface (velvet, flock, velor) looks darker than glossy coatings. The sheen of genuine leather or satin adds luxury and sophistication, while coarse fabrics (linen, cotton) help create coziness and home warmth.

Acid colors look aggressive, so they are almost never found in upholstery and decoration. If you want brightness, then it is permissible to put such a sofa in the kitchen or in the hallway, where it will not be an eyesore. Neutral finishes and calm lighting will help soften its harshness.

Shades

A green sofa can have a huge variety of shades: from acid lime to deep emerald. For interior design, the most popular are:

  1. Dark green. A deep dark shade brings a touch of luxury and nobility to the space. This is a good option for classic interiors, where it is important to emphasize the taste of the owners.
  2. Emerald. The noble range, which repeats the color of the precious stone, is ideal for spacious and bright living rooms and bedrooms.
  3. Bolotny. The muted color of the upholstery reminds of natural silence and tranquility. It helps to create a discreet and harmonious interior.
  4. Olive. A conservative and restrained tone is relevant to create the effect of antiquity. Classic and retro style with it become even more elegant.
  5. Blue-green. An option for the realization of the most daring design decisions. Depending on the shade, it can be darker and colder, gentle or deeper.
  6. Turquoise. Combines notes of freshness and coolness from blue with the warmth of green. This union is recognized as one of the universal combinations in design.
  7. Light green. Fresh range sets a positive mood, makes the atmosphere cheerful and comfortable for people of all ages, especially children and youth.
  8. Acid colors. An extreme design solution that is not suitable for all styles. If you correctly dose the abundance of color in a design with a green sofa, then it can increase vitality and positive energy. Such an interior will not irritate and cause aggressive emotions at all.

Pros and cons of a green sofa

According to the psychology of color, green has an anti-stress effect and is able to remove negative thoughts. At the subconscious level, green is associated with comprehension of the new, the desire to develop, love of life, stability and security. Therefore, when added to the interior, even in a small amount, it is able to energize and set you up for relaxation.

Despite the large number of advantages, green also has disadvantages. The relaxing effect of it can be so much that over time it can lead to apathy and indifference. An excess of color can cause loss of strength, unwillingness to work.

Sofa shape and material

In the design of any room, the shape of the sofa design plays an important role, which should effectively complement the overall picture, making the atmosphere more harmonious.

The most popular models are triple corner ones, which are suitable for both large areas and a minimum area. They can be optionally equipped with a built-in table, shelves or even a drink bar.

Another common universal shape is the classic straight line. Usually it is equipped with armrests and a backrest of medium height, which interestingly complement any stylistic decisions.

Compact sofas are considered salvation for a small footage. They also have a straight shape and, despite their size, are quite roomy.

In addition to the shape, the upholstery material is important. It is on him that the general perception of the room and the service life of the furniture depend:

Combination with other colors

A green sofa is an accent that needs to be properly beaten in the interior. A well-chosen color companion will help make a fresh palette even more expressive, create a unified design. There are some of the most successful combinations that designers actively use:

  1. White. With a light finish, the greens look even more luxurious and rich. Thanks to the freshness and purity of the background, the eyes are literally riveted to the rich upholstery. In order for the picture to be perceived as a whole, the colors of upholstered furniture are duplicated on wall elements and in accessories.

You should not choose pure white, which has a cold undertone. Its warm shades look much more advantageous: beige, cream or ivory. They perfectly highlight the virtues of a playful bottle and pale green.

  2. Brown. The natural look of the green sofa in the interior of the living room and other rooms is appropriate to complement the same natural companion. On a dark background (chocolate and coffee) it is beautiful to place an olive or marsh sofa. In muted colors, not only walls are made, but also the floor, as well as curtains and other textiles.

If light shades of chocolate (walnut, cocoa, coffee with milk) are taken as the basis, then they are complemented by emerald and bottled. The noble greenery of upholstered furniture looks more expensive with milky pillows. Elegant additions to bright upholstery will be bleached wood - birch and oak.

  3. Grey. Natural green on a neutral background looks impressive, but at the same time minimalistic. Granite and concrete will highlight the beauty of malachite and pistachio - this is one of the most successful solutions. Gray neutralizes the excessive activity of acid tones, which makes them appropriate in rooms of any purpose.

Dark, for example, graphite or anthracite background, needs light furniture. A pale green, light green, light turquoise sofa will do. Of the materials, preference should be given to velvet, velor and other materials that create additional comfort. So textured upholstery is complemented by a smooth surface of the walls.

  4. Yellow. A life-affirming palette is often chosen to complement the fresh natural range. The whole depth of emerald, bottle and turquoise will reveal the color of ivory, ocher, mustard. With them, the space becomes lighter and more spacious. If the style needs elements of luxury, then gold inserts are used in the design. Glitter is also added in the form of blotches on the upholstery.

The yellow palette best accepts light green shades. Delicate light green and olive are ideal pairs for banana and light lemon on walls and textiles. Mint, moss and pale marsh look original with caramel, orange and peach.

  5. Violet. A rich shade that looks mysterious and even magical, with the right combination reveals its beauty and the elegance of a companion. Particularly interesting is the living room with a green sofa against the background of lilac or violet walls and with the same accessories. Light colors do not look gloomy and dark, they help visually make the area larger.

So that a room with soft lilac and a selected shade of green does not turn out to be flashy, it is important to choose an additional color. Priority should be given to light wood, yellowish, beige and milky.

  6. Blue. The green sofa balances the coldness of the blue well. Light green or swamp furniture looks great with azure and sapphire colors. The use of both blue and turquoise in the decoration is welcome. No less interesting is the emerald and bottle furnishings with a delicate heavenly and rich cornflower blue background.

Green sofa in different interior styles

Green upholstered furniture is suitable for any stylistic direction, if you choose the right shape, upholstery material and undertone. The most common styles where it is appropriate to put a green sofa are the following:

  1. Minimalism. The furniture is mostly rectangular in shape. Usually the designs are low, on metal legs and do not have backs, the seat is hard. A good choice would be modular options that can be easily disassembled into poufs. For upholstery, leather or textiles with a simple texture are suitable. Curtains for a green sofa should be concise and light, beige and milky tones.
  2. Baroque. A green sofa with velvet upholstery will take center stage in the living room. Upholstered furniture is complemented by wooden facades with elegant carvings and figured armrests. In the design, gilding looks appropriate. A sofa made of green leather is suitable for an office and a kitchen. Against the background of wood, glossy upholstery looks luxurious and expensive. Armchairs or chairs that support a soft structure with their shape and curves will be an excellent addition.
  3. High tech. A sofa with chrome legs and upholstery made of leather or wool substitute will fit into the technological style. The shape can be classic rectangular or like various geometric shapes - an oval or a square. Modular designs that are quickly disassembled into elements are considered a convenient solution.
  4. Eco style. The green sofa is ideal for natural style. The fresh range of upholstery is supported by wood fronts and the same finishes. In the role of the material, eco-leather, velor or matting is used. Near the furniture, you can put pots with live plants, a bamboo table, and hang a panel of stabilized moss on the wall. The wallpaper for the green sofa with floral motifs looks no less interesting.
  5. Loft. The roughness of the industrial style finish softens a rectangular or corner sofa. Green upholstered furniture will dilute the brutality of the direction with its concrete walls and brickwork. Upholstery in velvet or leather is appropriate. Comfort and lightness will add decorative pillows contrasting with the decor.
  6. Provence. For him, sofas in pastel shades are good. Curtains and textiles are made in the same range. The upholstery does not have to be monophonic, materials in a small flower or strip are suitable. For the living room, a sofa with armrests is desirable, for the kitchen - a corner sofa, for a nursery - a transformer.

Bright, positive, juicy green color can dilute any interior. A sofa of this color can take its rightful place in any room, from the living room to the kitchen. However, in order for this piece of furniture to look as harmonious as possible, it is necessary to remember some nuances. So, let's talk about how to properly use a green sofa in the interior, what colors and design styles to combine it with.

A bit of green

Green is the color of spring, warmth and harmony. It has a positive effect on the emotional background of a person, calms, protects from depression and negative thoughts. However, this color has many shades, which allows everyone to choose the option to their liking.

The most common variations of green are:

Very bright, "acid" upholstery colors are rarely used to decorate living rooms. If you want to put such a sofa, it is best that the surrounding design is calm and neutral enough. But bright elements of furniture can take their rightful place in the kitchen, in the hallway or on the insulated balcony.

Important! When choosing a green sofa, be sure to pay attention to the compatibility of the shade with the rest of the room. This is a necessary condition for creating a harmonious atmosphere.

Features of upholstery material

It is necessary to take into account the properties of the upholstery material. The fact is that the same color can look different on different materials. Remember a few secrets:

Remember: when choosing upholstery, it is necessary to take into account its properties and durability. For example, not every fabric is suitable for installation in the kitchen.

The best combinations of green

A green sofa is a fairly bright piece of furniture, which is why it is important to choose the right environment for it. Let's look at the most successful combinations of green with other colors that are most often used by interior designers.

Green sofa and white walls

This is a very fresh, bright and rich combination. However, on a white background, a green sofa can simply get lost. To prevent this from happening, the green color should be repeated in the surrounding details. For example, you can paint the doors green, install decorative elements in the same color around the room.

Important! Do not use pure white. Cream and milky shades are most harmonious with green. In this design, white will be ideally combined with both delicate light green and noble bottle.

Green and brown

If you have dark chocolate or coffee-colored walls, set an olive or marsh-colored sofa against their background. All other elements of the interior should be made in more muted colors.

Lighter variations of brown are successfully combined with emerald and bottle colors. Put beige pillows on such a sofa - and your interior will acquire an “expensive” tone. To complete the picture, a bleached wood table can be placed nearby.

Green and yellow

This is a very bright, fresh and energetic combination. Walls and interiors in honey or mustard color will perfectly set off a sofa with emerald, bottle or turquoise upholstery. Such a room is immediately filled with light, it becomes more spacious and comfortable.

Richer, sunnier hues work best with lighter shades of green. For example, banana color will be a worthy match for a light green sofa. Delicate mint goes well with canary.

Green and blue

A blue interior can be a worthy frame for a green sofa. For example, the predominance of sapphire and azure colors will successfully set off the upholstery of delicate light green or swamp shades. For a delicate cornflower blue color, a rich emerald-colored sofa will be a worthy party.

When choosing a successful combination, you should not be afraid of experiments. Sometimes the game of contrasts turns out to be very successful. If you find it difficult to decide on a suitable color scheme, you can resort to the help of special tables of color combinations and shades.

Green sofa in different design styles

A green sofa can be called a universal solution. It fits perfectly into most design trends. Moreover, it can be used to dilute the interior or create an unusual accent. Let's analyze the most popular styles in which the green sofa is most common.

Minimalist green sofa

Preference is given to models of the correct form: rectangular, square. The sofa should not be too high. Prefabricated modular sofas look very nice in the style of minimalism, which, if necessary, can be disassembled into poufs. The shade of furniture depends on the surrounding design. In the choice of upholstery, preference is given to leather and textiles, but without patterns and patterns.

How to play with a green baroque sofa

In this case, the sofa should take center stage. Preference is given to models with wooden and carved elements. The carriage coupler looks very nice in the design of the appearance of the product.
