Avery Martin

There's no getting around doing laundry. It's just one of those chores that has to remain a priority. Otherwise, you can easily become overwhelmed. Even though the process — sorting, washing, drying and folding your clothing — might take much more time than you'd like, there are some ways to make it much more efficient each week. A good place to start is with a well-designed laundry room, especially if you have a small space. Here, we've gathered the best laundry room ideas to make your design scheme much more stylish and functional.

This roundup, including brilliant design and DIY tips, storage solutions as well as wall color and art ideas is full of inspiration for your home. There's even room to get creative with storage — think pull-out shelves for cabinets along with mounted drying racks, laundry hampers and ironing boards.

residents place in the city oskov

From the author

Denis Esakov, artist

— Walking in the center of Pskov on a June night, I saw the walls of a dilapidated building and a forest inside them. This is not a picture from Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, where the plants rapaciously devour the city and the helpless people. It's more like a crab and its shell. The crab in this case is the forest inside, and the shell is the walls of the ruin. nine0005

Previously, there was a laundry, or, as the artist Sergei Mikhailov calls it, a "port wash". Immediately outside its walls, the ascent to the Romanov Hill begins (the locals call it Romanikha). First, a small meadow and trees around, in the distance - the New Ascension Church of the 16th century, next to it - a three-story brick house built after the war and saved from high-rise buildings. From here you can see the restored Governor's House (nowadays a children's library), and further on - the ruins of the white chambers of the 16th-17th centuries. From the height of Romanikha, you can look into the windows on the second floor of the Laundry Room. nine0005

Half a year later I returned to Pskov with a model of a plywood Laundry Room with real greenery inside. The layout was reduced to a size that fit under the roof of the gallery "Workshop", and was a kind of bench - invited to sit down and start a conversation. The conversations took place and led to several joint events with the townspeople right next to the Laundry on Romanikha. Even then, there were ideas of what could be done in this place in order to integrate the ruin into city life. And there were residents who accepted Laundry as an important part of Pskov. nine0005

Such an object in the city is a great success. Ruins in symbiosis with the forest. This is an opportunity to observe decay as a natural part of the life of a city and a person, and landscape sculpture, and a place to talk about memory.

I invited six citizens to talk about Laundry as a place in the center of Pskov that they miss. Each of the heroes of this story has experience in creating places in the city: a picnic, a bar, a dance studio, and so on. We asked them to tell about them: how these places appeared, why they make them and for whom. nine0005

Someone has a very clear idea of what to do in the city. Others ask the question: what came first - a place or a person? Maybe not a person creates a place, but vice versa? They also think about how to involve the Laundry in city events.

It turned out to be six stories about the places in the city that make up the Pskov that I want to return to, and six different scenarios for the development of the Laundry.

I invite you to take part in the project - to create your own Laundry. Illustrator Dasha Surma listened to the interviews of all the characters about their places, about the ideas of revitalizing the Laundry, and drew stickers that corresponded with the stories. So the place was filled with different functions and symbols. We really want residents to perceive their city as a place for themselves, where their desires come true and where they live, study, work (we hope, with pleasure). nine0005

This will lead to conflicts of interest, discussions and important city events. And it will create intimate, warm places in the city.

Invitation to offline participation

In the summer of 2021, we plan to transfer digital fantasies to the offline space in Pskov. It will be a festival of various events and a series of workshops, where we will embody some of the ideas that were voiced in the interviews of the heroes, and come up with our own. We are looking for residents of Pskov to participate in a series of master classes, ready to fantasize and design with their own hands. Write in a very free form to Denis Esakov at [email protected] shortly about yourself and your desire to participate. The more your letter reveals about you, the better we can prepare for the festival. See you in Pskov! nine0005

Workers on the project:

Alexander Akopov — programming and layout
Denis Esakov — project ideologist
Dasha Surma — illustrations
Igor Efimenko — video
Ivan Mishchikhin — editing
Elena Nelinova — editor

Thanks to all those who, in word and deed involved in the Laundry and helped to develop this idea:

Luda Kirsanova, Sergei Stankevich, Katya Romanova, Xenia Diodorova, Masha Kremer, Pavel Andreev, Zhenya and Boris Nikitin, Irina Golubeva and Vladimir Nikitin.
