How to Decorate Your Home in Cozy Cottage Style
Design by Becca Interiors
Cottages are some of the coziest homes around. Tucked away in idyllic locations—like the mountains or the beach—these petite getaways are endlessly charming. While their small size plays a role in their warm and welcoming feel, their décor is even more responsible.
“Cottage-style décor is all about creating a comfortable and casual space designed for easy living,” Sarah Fischer, principal designer of Sarah & Sons Interiors, says. “It has roots in traditional design, but is softened from age and use.”
Cottage style is packed with traditional prints, cozy furnishings, and handed-down treasures, and it has a way of making everyone feel at home. While cottage-style décor is most popular in cottages, you can get the cozy look in any home. To help you turn your space into a charming getaway, we asked four designers to share their favorite cottage-style décor ideas.

“Since cottages were often second homes, cottage décor includes a mix of styles and patterns—as if furnishings were handed down from different family members,” Fischer says. So, forgo the matching furniture sets and piece together a charming collection of antiques and flea market finds.

Set the tone in your cozy cottage by sticking with soft, welcoming colors.
“Cottage-style décor is happy, casual, and charming,” Amy Peltier, creative director of Amy Peltier Interior Design, says. “Make sure the space is light and bright, and use pastel and airy colors to bring comfort to your space.”

Cottages are designed with easy living in mind, so favor materials that will add form and function to your home. “Consider beadboard and wood paneling as part of the millwork to add character that can withstand bumps and dents,” Fischer says.

The best cottages don’t just look charming—they also feel incredibly cozy. So, stock up on soft, inviting furniture. “Favor ultra-comfortable furnishings that are very lounge-worthy,” Ginger Curtis, principal designer of Urbanology Designs, says.

One of the hallmarks of cottage style? “Creative use of cozy spaces,” Fischer says. Sure, your home may be roomier than the average cozy cottage, but there are bound to be a few tight spaces you can transform into charming alcoves.

When filling your cottage with vintage furniture, try to use old items in new ways. “Bring your aunt’s dresser into the mudroom for additional storage,” Fischer says. “Or, turn]an old tool bench into the perfect kitchen island.”

Prints and patterns add personality to any cottage—just be sure to keep your picks traditional. “I love a blend of buffalo check patterns, mixed with stripes and block prints,” Mary Maloney, owner of Bee’s Knees Interior Design Studio, says.

Make your home look like a cottage from top to bottom by leaving your ceiling beams exposed. “I love to add rustic beams to a bright white ceiling for a look that screams cozy cottage,” Curtis says.

In any hand-me-down-filled space, you’re bound to end up with texture, so lean into the look. “My favorite way to achieve cottage style pieces is through charming details, such as floral patterns, organic textures, sisal rugs, and woven materials,” Peltier says.

As you decorate your space, soften your sleekest pieces with plush cushions, chunky blankets, and other cozy accents. “Layer on cute and cozy furnishings—think: charming nostalgia,” Peltier says.

Cottages aren’t exclusively filled with old items. “Typically, it is an eclectic look—a blend of old and new,” Maloney says. Balance out your favorite vintage pieces with a few modern accents.

When stocking up on vintage pieces, designers agree: Stick with genuine antiques. “To prevent cottage décor from veering into country kitsch, run away from the brand new furniture sets with faux distressing,” Fischer says. “Find vintage pieces with authentic wear instead.”

Katie Leclercq
“With cottage-style décor, it’s all about the charming details,” Peltier says. So, invest in homey accents—like weathered hardware, vintage hand towels, and lots of fresh flowers.

Don’t get hung up on what a cottage “should” look like. “Cottage décor is all about your unique sense of comfort—and formulaic design won’t get you there,” Fischer says. Instead, focus on designing a space you'll love spending time in. “You'll end up with a style that is authentically your own,” she says.

Stocking up on special pieces is a big part of furnishing a cottage—but editing is, too. “Often, less is more," Curtis says. “Pare back oversized furniture and accessories to truly let special pieces have their moment. ”

“Cottage style has a ‘collected over time’ look and feel,” Curtis says. “Take your time looking for one-of-a-kind pieces.”
At the end of this "treasure hunt," you’ll have a charmingly curated space that looks and feels truly special.

What is cottage style?
Cottage style is all about showcasing and preserving prized original features as well as creating cozy, homely spaces. Small but beautiful, cottages are awash with historic stone and timber floors, rustic ceiling beams and quirky angles, and its these elements which give cottage interiors their unique character.
Prized features of the rural landscape, chocolate-box cottages are entwined with geology and the landscape, so taking decorating inspiration from the natural surroundings is a fitting place to start thinking about a scheme. Think colors inspired by the nature, botanical prints and an eclectic mix of handmade and antique wooden furniture.
1. Decorate in earthy, natural tones
Cottages are inextricably linked with their rural setting and brimming with natural materials with soft weathered textures so what better palette to decorate in than with the gentle colors of the countryside?
Here, Little Greene’s greenish neutral – North Brink Grey 291 – sets a relaxed mood and a calm foundation for furniture in a mix of Vanessa Arbuthnott's nature-inspired fabrics including a vintage german sofa in Fruit Garden Straw, Pigeon, Charcoal and armchairs in her May Blossom Pigeon/Charcoal.
Don't miss our cottage lighting ideas for pretty, practical solutions.
2. Mix and match wooden furniture
Embracing natural materials is the perfect complement to the rustic features of a cottage, as Susie Watson, founder of Susie Watson Designs , explains.
‘Using natural wood furniture, connects a space to its surroundings and adds character,’ she says. ‘Antique furniture can blend well with newly bought furniture, don’t worry about matching the color of the wood just make sure the era of the pieces feels coherent.’
3. Choose warm, earthy colors
(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby )
Cottage style is all about creating that warm welcome and homely feel. Choosing warm shades based on natural earth pigments is an easy way to enhance the mood of a space; try creams, and earthy stone and honeyed yellow shades through to warm plaster pinks and rich terracottas for instant coziness.
When decorating an old cottage with original plaster it is advised to use a breathable formula made such as Edward Bulmer's Natural Paint , for similar shade to the above try Brick.

4. Choose a Shaker-style kitchen
Based on the Shaker principles of simplicity, utility, and craftsmanship, the elegant proportions and fuss-free, linear design of Shaker kitchen cabinetry make it perfect for a humble cottage, mixed in with reclaimed unfitted pieces for a relaxed feel.
If low ceilings are an issue, limiting storage mainly to base cabinetry is a good way to keep a cottage feeling bright and open, while also allowing beautiful stone walls to stand out, as this beautiful deVOL kitchen proves.
Cottages are loved for their warm and welcoming feel, and key to creating this is including a rustic farmhouse table and chairs for social gathering, as Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL explains.
'The charm of a cottage kitchen is often the quirky and eclectic mix of old and new that gives the feeling of a cosy and welcoming space. A vintage kitchen table and chairs is a must, all cottages need a spot for chatting and drinking tea and the ubiquitous jug of wild flowers.'
6. Fill your home with garden flowers
(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby / Styling Pippa Blenkinsop)
When it comes to cottage style 'fresh garden or hedge row flowers are a must and can mark the difference between urban and country living,' reveals Vanessa Arbuthnott.
For a pretty floral centerpiece on your kitchen table, gather a selection of vessels in different materials and sizes such as apothercary vases, chippy enamel just, jam jars and stoneware pots and fill with your fresh pickings. Don't worry about stems being different lengths or about colors clashing, this variety of blooms jostling for attention is key to the quaint cottage look.

7.
Decorate with heritage prints(Image credit: Future / Kasia Fiszer)
Pay homage to the beautiful rural setting of your cottage by decorating with papers and fabrics that capture the charm of the countryside. William Morris – artist, designer, poet, socialist and ‘Godfather of the Arts and Crafts Movement’ – created hundreds of designs that celebrate the beauty of nature.
Mostly created around the late 19th-century, his stylized flora and fauna prints are still available to buy today, in original and refreshed colorways, and are the perfect way to bring the beauty of nature into the bedroom.
8. Add in upcycled vintage furniture
(Image credit: Future / Kasia Fiszer / Styling Pippa Blenkinsop)
The great thing about creating a cottage look is that it can be created on a shoestring using vintage pieces and a bit of imagination. Easy to come by at specialist furniture shops and flea markets, dated brown furniture can easily be refreshed with some chalk furniture paint into original and rustic pieces, as this pretty desk proves.
Don't worry about the finish or the wood color, instead look for beautiful shapes that will shine once painted. When you have spotted the perfect piece, simply sand down, coat with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint and sand again once dry to create this weathered French look.
9. Choose a traditional, curvaceous sofa
With elegant curves and a Howard-style silhouette, this small Classic sofa from Susie Watson Designs is a great choice for zoning a snug kitchen-cum-living room, and is layered with paisley, ticking and statement floral cushions, plus a wool throw, for a cozy cottage feel.
10. Get retro with your textile treatments
Thought that the curtain pelmet and sink skirt were things of the past? Think again if you're looking for cottage bathroom ideas. Vanessa Arbuthnott shows how these vintage-style designs can look fresh and stylish in this bathroom using her pretty mix and match fabrics. To stop the look feeling too cutesy, embrace contemporary color combinations, such as the the Dark Hay/ Charcoal colorways of these French Ticking, Herbaceous Border and Dainty Daisy fabrics.
- See: Cottage curtain ideas – inspiration for a pretty, cozy home
‘The yellow and grey botanical fabrics bring the countryside in and the pretty striped frill around the sink softens and warms up the space too.’ says Vanessa. ‘The bathroom is given a light and airy feel, with its painted wooden floor, and free standing bath.’
11. Paper with romantic botanical wallpapers
Prints inspired by nature are a mainstay of quintessential cottage interiors. A master of timeless style, Colefax & Fowler is the go-to brand for romantic botanical prints. New from its Jardine Florals collection, Greenacre features distinctive fan-like gingko leaves with dancing blossoms to produce a contemporary foliage design, and is available across wallpaper. For a vintage botanical bedroom try using this Leaf Green colorway wall to wall, as well as on a quilt, chair and valance.
12. Use a neutral palette to highlight rustic features
There’s something truly magical about sleeping up in the rafters. Let original oak beams stand out against a palette of simple neutrals or pastels. Complement the rustic patina of aged wood with a natural seagrass carpet, then try delicate patterns, such as Neptune’s Emma linen in Sage for upholstery and cushions.
'As spring is on the way, natural colours like pinks and greens, complement the light and contrast harmoniously against darker greys,' says Amber, home designer at Neptune . 'Alternatively, an all-white look can go a long way in lifting the room to create a lighter space, and our Grace scatter cushions are perfect for adding a little texture.'
13. Create a cozy reading spot
(Image credit: Future / Jody Stewart)
There's lots of Marie Kondo-inspired talk about living clutter-free these days, but when it comes to cottage interiors, a little clutter is a good thing. Shelves of books make homes look cozy and lived in. Having bookshelves floor to ceiling in the living room will keep books organised and will mean they're close at hand when you want to curl up with one by the fire.

The interior decoration of the cottage in a modern style - 35 examples with photos
The interior decoration of the cottage always corresponds to the architectural style chosen for the construction. But there are many more directions in interior design than in architecture, so decorating a comfortable and beautiful interior is not easy. This is an art in its own way (and I must say that there are no rules in it that cannot be broken). The atmosphere at home, first of all, is created for life: where it is pleasant to live, you want to return.
1 — For example, this cottage is built in a classical style, but the project was used twice.
2 — In the first case, the owners preferred the classics when creating the interior.
3 - The interior of the other house is decorated in a country style, and the fireplace decoration looks completely different.
To better understand yourself and your desires, it is desirable to have an idea of the main current trends. Furnishing and decorating a cottage is not a cheap pleasure, and it is sad in a year or two to come to the feeling that you are uncomfortable in it. We will consider 5 popular design trends, leaving aside stylizations on historical themes (Empire, Baroque, Rococo, and so on) for now.
Classic - comfort and elegance
Actually, it refers to all interiors, where not a single feature is expressed in an exalted (underlined) form. A harmonious color palette in the decoration of the walls, symmetry and the absence of catchy decor - what could be more pleasant than such an environment? There are a great many design options: against a moderate background, you can “draw” any pleasant touches that will bring individuality and variety to it.
4 - Leading beige wall color goes well with mahogany furniture and sofa. The dark brown table is in harmony with the fireplace and leather armchairs.
5 — A contemporary Mediterranean style with white dominating interiors.
6 — The living room is furnished as if in black and white graphics, which are softened by a large number of shades and smooth silhouettes of upholstered furniture.
7 - Modern classics with eclectic elements - a win-win option when choosing a design for a country house.
8 — The interior of the house is very simple: plaster and white paint. As an option, any pastel shade can be chosen.
9 — Modern kitchen furnishings: simple, beautiful and comfortable.
10 - Restrained mint color and cozy upholstered furniture.
11 — Against the background of a simple light wall decoration, every detail of the interior stands out in relief
Country style, which has no age . It always has ethnic features: there is American, English, Russian, French country (Provence). All of them are similar to each other in the main - the simplicity and ease of rural life, and are absolutely different in details - after all, each nation has its own habits and tastes.

12 - The snow-white interior and pastel shades in furniture and textiles are reminiscent of the "French" country.
13 - Kitchen design in a modern English house, stylized in the "old times".
14 — Spacious wooden house decorated in a "modern" country style. It is reminiscent of simple wooden furniture, colorful rugs, tinted "lining". However, the music center and the fashionable central fireplace are signs of the current century.
15 — The dining room has the same great mix of modern and traditional design elements, skillfully combined into an overall ensemble.
16 - Snow-white walls, natural wood tone and funny "miracles" from the nearby forest.
Light surfaces are not to everyone's taste, and people's perception of the color palette is not the same. Shown below are two country-style finishes, where the design is built on bright, saturated colors.
17 — Summer always blooms in a cottage with such an interior.
18 - Favorite colors of Provence: blue lavender and yellow sunflowers.
Loft - industrial aesthetics
The very idea at first glance seems incompatible with the concept of a cottage, because it evokes completely different associations - high-rise buildings with panoramic windows, and city landscapes, along with the noise of a metropolis that lives day and night. A classically built loft is like a jazz melody "indastrial" that sounds in the autumn city twilight.
However, many successful examples have been created where this loft looks organic in the interior of a private house. Especially if it was immediately built according to the idea, or an old abandoned building is actually used. “Loft” in translation is just “attic”, and therefore it easily and harmoniously “gets along” in a cottage with an attic, stairs, and a second light.
19 — Interior design of a loft-style cottage.
Traditional materials were used in the decoration of the fireplace: brick, aged wood. Reddish-brown and blue colors are also characteristic signs. The combination of the rough texture of the walls, the ceiling and the delicate intricate furniture, which seems to have come here from another life, looks interesting and unusual. The classic “indastrial” theme is successfully played up, where elements of eclecticism and retro are almost always present. In a country house, such an interior seems unobtrusive and natural.
20 — Finishing options for the bedroom and fireplace.
21 - In this case, the same loft, but softer, "wooden".
22 - Rough plank finish in natural tone and bright color accents.
23 - A more sophisticated design with a touch of modernity.
24 — An eclectic interior that combines classic and loft.

Minimalism - the beauty of clear lines
This direction does not recognize national borders, it is cosmolithic in its essence. Although in Scandinavia, Japan or America, the design of a modern cottage in the style of minimalism is distinctive, the common features are immediately visible. Clear geometric proportions, clear colors without halftones and shades, a minimum of things and nothing superfluous. Each piece of furniture, picture, souvenir (even a sofa cushion) does not just stand or hang, but occupy a clearly designated place and fulfill its functional or decorative role.
25 — Characteristic appearance of a modern cottage.
26 — The interior of the cottage is perfectly smooth and painted walls, against which clear graphics are drawn.
27 — Laconic and functional kitchen-dining room.
28 — Only a wonderful view from the window indicates that the interior of a country cottage.
29 - Softer, more delicate, but also minimalism.
Fusion is the art of unification
As an interior design trend, it appeared relatively recently, in the second half of the 20th century. This is a subtle ability to combine objects from different times into an elegant harmonious ensemble. Ideal if the house has a lot of family "values" and memorabilia, and you want to keep them for your children and grandchildren. Sometimes it turns into a fun experiment with colors, textures and shapes, leading to an unexpected and very interesting result.
30 — The interior decoration is simple and the mix of various items creates a sophisticated atmosphere.
31 - Tiny cottage (50 sq. m.) is cozy, despite the very simple decoration. The interior has a mixture of retro (an easy chair in the form of the 60s of the last century), a modern sofa and lamps, while bright carpets and a funny chair with metal legs look like pop art objects.
32 — The small patio of this house maintains the theme of artistic design, and captivates with its cute, spontaneous appearance.

33 - Fusion with an oriental accent, wood is used in the walls, and quite modern tiles on the floor.
34 — A great mix of past and future.
35 — The interior design of the fusion cottage gives the interior some mystery.
Turnkey interior decoration of the house
The interior of a private house always reflects the individuality of the owners, their lifestyle, views on home comfort and family values. To create a holistic image, you need to think over the design concept and make sure that the interior decoration is combined with the design of the house outside.

Do I need a design project for finishing a private house?
If you plan to carry out large-scale work on finishing a private house, a design project is a must. He will help:
- choose the best planning solution and color scheme, taking into account the wishes of the owners and the technical parameters of the object;
- decide on finishing materials and a set of necessary equipment;
- accurately calculate the cost of materials and work, prepare a detailed estimate and optimize the budget;
- evaluate the aesthetics and convenience of the future interior even before the start of the repair (3D visualizations prepared by the authors of the project will help to do this).
