Why do we need to decorate the kitchen
Some people think that the kitchen is a purely practical place in the apartment where there should be dishes and food, and so that nothing distracts from cooking and does not spoil the appetite .
But you must admit, it's so nice when you are surrounded by nice and pleasant things - pictures, photographs. Indeed, along with beautiful dishes and other kitchen utensils, they are able to make our mood and give the cooking process and all the time spent in the kitchen a special charm.
Not so long ago, I have already told in previous articles how to choose a picture for the bedroom, living room and even the hallway. She also talked about how to choose Feng Shui paintings, which ones can be hung in the house and which ones can’t, and also which paintings will suit your interior, depending on its style.
Now it's time for the kitchen. Let's figure out together how to choose a picture for the kitchen, which pictures will suit which style, and find out other useful tips and tricks.
Whether or not to hang a picture in the kitchen
interior object. Therefore, if you have a free wall in your kitchen and you are not against paintings, then I see no obstacles not to place it in your kitchen.
The main rule in choosing a picture for the kitchen is that you should like itIn addition, some psychologists are sure that painting has a positive effect on our psyche, and contemplation of your favorite picture brings you harmony and satisfaction.
But besides positive emotions, pictures in the kitchen perform a number of other functions:
- Decorate the kitchen, make it more “yours”, not like everyone else
- Emphasize other features of the style of your home and kitchen
- Create a cozy atmosphere of warmth and home
- And some paintings can also add luxury to your kitchen.
If you already want, but don't know what picture to hang in the kitchen, read this article to the end - I have prepared a whole style guide for you!
Paintings to match the style of the interior
Of course, every house and every kitchen is unique, different from any other in its own way. But still, there are different styles, and if your kitchen belongs to one of them, or at least has a lot of similarities with some style, read and see my TOP-list of paintings for different styles.
I start with this criterion, because the picture, in principle, should not stand out from the general direction and stand apart. On the other hand, if you absolutely cannot identify the style of your kitchen, and this often happens, if there was no design initially, then choosing a picture is even easier - you just need to be guided by your tastes and preferences.
So, depending on the style, the picture in the kitchen can be either an abstract canvas or a naturalistic landscape or still life. If the kitchen looks more modern, without a clear hint of antiquity and antiques, then the paintings should be selected with more modern, free and bright subjects.
If the kitchen is more of a classic type, then traditional painting will come in very handy, such as oil paintings above the kitchen table. For fans of a bold and avant-garde style, more calm and balanced paintings are suitable, for example, sketches and sketches in watercolor, pastel, charcoal or pencils.
Provence style kitchen
Provence style is one of the most romantic styles. It appeared several centuries ago in France, personifying the spirit of small village houses in the south of the country.
This style is usually characterized by comfort and practicality and beauty. The color scheme of this style is more pastel, there are no bright and contrasting tones. Favorite shades and colors of this style are azure, blue, purple, pink, brick, light green.
Since this style loves a lot of cute details, beautiful napkins and spice jars, and in general, a lot of textiles will come in handy in the decor.
Paintings should be framed in beautiful wooden frames, preferably wide, which will emphasize the old atmosphere. From the plots - olive and lavender branches, still lifes, paintings in the style of the impressionists, rural landscapes. 0005
By the way, you don't have to hang pictures on the wall, you can just put them on the shelves, next to beautiful jars and potholders.
If you have chosen several paintings, you can make a small composition out of them.
In addition to painting, paintings for decorating the kitchen in the Provence style can be made using decoupage technique, these can be cross-stitch and satin stitch, also framed in wooden frames.
Classic style kitchen
Another popular style in interior design is classic. This style is characterized by traditionalism, strict features, simplicity and conciseness of forms. It is better to use natural materials for decor, and discreet colors.
Choose still life and landscape paintings in soothing colors with realistic subjects. Do not forget also that the classics are luxurious and rich items that combine practicality and functionality. So it is better to choose picture frames to match such objects - metal, carved, made of good wood.
This style is not characterized by a piling up of details, so it is better to choose one picture for kitchen decor, or several of a small format, but combined with each other and plot, and frames. with still lifes or photos, in a beautiful frame, you can use reproductions of paintings by famous artists.
Scandinavian kitchen style
Scandinavian style is of special convenience and functionality. This style is characterized by light shades, white colors, or monochrome. If he talks about a tree, then it is always the light colors of the tree. When choosing a frame for a picture, then pay special attention to this moment.
In addition to white frames, paintings can also be hung in black frames - they will become a bright contrasting spot on white and light walls.
In the Scandinavian style, everything should be simple, neat, but at the same time with a soul, like in the Provencal style, but without piling up unnecessary details. Drawings in flat monochrome frames made in pencil or charcoal will look very nice.
If you want to hang a painted picture, choose calm colors and subjects, such as flowers in a vase, Scandinavian landscapes or ornaments.
Country style kitchen
Of the colors, beige, brown, sand shades are used, as well as all natural ones. The abundance of minimally processed wood, which will also affect the choice of frames for the picture. The shape is simple, without pretentiousness and carved decoration.
Subjects of paintings - still lifes, landscapes, natural patterns. You can also arrange pages with recipes from an old cookbook in a frame with a passe-partout - it will also look very nice, especially on a shelf with jars of spices.
If you have a textured wall, for example, in a country kitchen, you can just hang a frame without a picture, or rather several different ones at once, of course, provided that they match the style of the interior.
Minimalist kitchen
The room is usually bright with a minimum of details, furniture and appliances. The main colors are white black, sometimes they are diluted with beige, blue and red colors, but in very moderate quantities.
Pictures for such a kitchen should not have any details, plots, more often it will be just an abstraction in a simple laconic plastic or metal, chrome-plated frame.
There shouldn't be too many pictures in the kitchen, sometimes even one is too much. Therefore, choose a picture with care so as not to violate the integrity of the style. By the way, it’s very possible to use a modular picture - it will add zest to the kitchen.
Loft kitchen
Finishing in such a kitchen is usually minimal. Usually, loft-style kitchens are large, spacious kitchens, which is why large-format paintings and posters almost the entire wall look so good there.
This style is characterized by a concrete floor and brick walls, so it is better to refrain from wooden frames, opt for laconic plastic or metal, preferably black.
Where is the best place to hang a picture
In addition to the style of the kitchen, you also need to take into account a number of features in order to choose pictures for decoration. Let's take a look at where in the kitchen it is best to place a picture - above the table, above the sofa or in other places, and why.
It is always best to place a picture at eye level. Choose a place closer to the light source so that the picture itself can be seen, place it by the window or next to the lamp.
If you are placing several paintings at once, then you need to focus on the bottom edge of the picture frame. If you have one large picture, then its bottom edge should be at the level of the wall in the middle.
If you hang a picture above the table, then it can also be placed at eye level, or slightly lower.
Do not hang pictures over a stovetop or table top to avoid damage to the picture.
Keep visual effects in mind as well, if you want to make the space look taller, choose vertical paintings. And to expand, on the contrary, take the big picture, you can even modular.
There is no universal place for a picture in the kitchen, but most often the picture is hung either above the table or on the wall opposite or side to the stove.
Kitchen Painting Tips
Kitchen paintings are different, as we have already found out, and a lot will depend on the style of your kitchen and its details. But, there are still a few tips with which you can independently pick up and place pictures in the kitchen.
Advice 1 – about the composition
You have probably noticed that in some interiors everything is so pleasing to the eye, you want to look and look, and also arrange everything at home for yourself. And looking at others, you feel discomfort and you want to fix everything, change places. It's all about the composition of the pictures.
The composition of the paintings must be symmetrical both in number and color. This means that you need to find a balance and hang an even number of paintings and keep a balance in the color scheme.
As for the form, a clear and strict composition of several paintings that hang in one line or in a square will look good in minimalist, classical style kitchens.
For Provence, country, Scandinavian style, you can hang pictures in a chaotic manner. You can try on certain frames, see how they will fit together and attach the final version to the wall.
Another nuance of composition is its meaning. Pictures should complement each other in style, color combinations and frame design. To make all the paintings look harmonious, choose the same frames and mats for the drawings.
Proportion Tip 2
For a large and spacious kitchen, choose large, dimensional paintings if space permits. For a small kitchen, even a picture of 20x30 or 30x40 will be enough.
If you want to hang a small picture in a large kitchen, it is better to choose a few small pictures and make a composition out of them.
When buying reproductions of paintings, make sure that large canvases do not turn out to be small format, otherwise it will look unsightly.
Tip 3 - about style
In principle, the subject of the picture can be anything, more importantly, how it is written or drawn and whether it fits into the style of the kitchen. As we have already found out, paintings with flowers are suitable for a Provence-style kitchen, still-lifes with fruits for a classic style, abstraction for a minimalist and Scandinavian-style kitchen, and pop art paintings for a loft.
Council 4 - on proportionality
Everything is more or less simple here: a wide wall - a wide picture, a high wall, a vertically elongated picture.
Tip 5 - about the light
Firstly, do not hang the picture in dark corners, and secondly, keep it away from direct sunlight so that the picture does not burn out in the sun during the hot season.
Remember that dark lighting makes colors more subdued. If you do not have a very bright side of the apartment, give preference to paintings with a large, bright and clear pattern.
Tip 6 – about the height
We always hang the picture at eye level of a standing person. For easier perception, the middle of the picture should be at eye level, and all edges aligned with the bottom edge.
Small paintings can be placed a little higher or lower. Also align the large picture along the bottom edge - it should be in the middle of the wall.
Tip 7 - Balance with furniture
Pictures can get lost in a massive interior. To prevent this, they can be hung on the wall opposite the furniture, aligned with the upper edge of the door or windows, along the upper edge of the kitchen shelves, or place the same massive modular paintings on the entire width of the wall.
Tip 8 - about other decor items
If you can't find a picture yet, you can make your kitchen cozy with other things. For example, beautiful apron and potholders that hang on hooks against the wall. Or, a vase with a painting and fresh flowers / fruits on the table.
You can choose the original wall clock - what you need in the kitchen. Also remember about photos - if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, photos of your loved ones will delight and inspire.
Conclusion
What kind of pictures are hung in the kitchen? First of all, the picture should please you, the owner / mistress of the house. You should get positive emotions from one look at this picture. It does not have to be with a product theme, it can be with any other. The main thing is a good mood and common stylistic features.
And of course, it will be doubly pleasant if the picture for the kitchen decor is created and painted by your own hands. If you dream of learning how to paint in oils, sign up for my free online master class, or for online oil painting courses!
12 tips for choosing, photo examples
Most people spend a significant part of their time in the kitchen: cooking, breakfast and dinner, and sometimes gatherings with friends. Naturally, everyone wants the room to be as comfortable and beautiful as possible.
Pictures can be a real decoration of your kitchen.Of course, without a good repair it will not be possible to achieve a feeling of comfort. However, do not forget that the interior of the kitchen is largely made by little things: decor, dishes, clocks and, of course, a picture.
Add coziness to your kitchen. The latter are perhaps the most popular kitchen decoration. Let's figure out how to choose a picture that matches the interior of the kitchen and what to look for.

Advantages of painting in the kitchen
It is important to understand that landscapes and still lifes play not only an important aesthetic role. Their functionality is much wider than it might seem at first glance.
Pictures are not only decoration.Sometimes pictures can :
- Hide fine finish errors. Sometimes the paint or plaster on the walls does not lie too evenly, and such decor will help mask the defect.
- Add some color to a monochrome design. If you decide to keep a monochromatic interior, the result may turn out to be boring. A bright pattern in this case will make the room more interesting.
- Shift focus to a specific area.
- Smooth out the disproportion that can occur if one wall is fully blocked and the other is free.
However, in order to achieve such results, it is necessary to choose the right picture. We are sure that with our advice you will not have any problems!
The right picture will complement the image.Tip 1. Don't forget to match the style
First of all, you must adhere to a single design concept for the design of the kitchen. If the room is decorated in style, the romantic landscape will not be too in theme. And vice versa, bright impressionism is unlikely to find a place in the kitchen in style
Make sure the painting matches your style. Therefore, carefully select a picture so that it matches the overall interior.
By the way: Many people, focusing on the plot of the canvas, forget about its design. It's about the frame. We also recommend choosing it individually, so that it harmonizes with the rest of the kitchen elements.
Ideally, the selected picture should complement the kitchen, organically fitting into the interior. So think carefully about your choice.
Tip 2. Create smart compositions
Of course, one large canvas can be a real decoration of a room. However, do not forget that such a solution is not suitable for all types of interior and not for every room configuration. For example, in a small kitchen, a massive picture is unlikely to be appropriate.
Classical paintings would look strange here. But the posters - that's it!And styles such as country and shabby chic welcome a lot of small decorations, designed in the same spirit. However, you can’t just hang pictures in a chaotic manner - you need to create a composition.
Nuance: An exception is allowed if you have selected many small photos or pictures in the same frame. In this case, a little "mess" is even welcome.
In general, remember that your gallery should have a unifying element - color, semantic load, general style of the picture. In addition, the frames should be similar to each other.
Abstraction is a win-win.If you are not sure of your talent as an art historian, you can purchase a ready-made set or several triptychs by one author.
Tip 3. Work with the shape
In this case, we are talking about the shape of the frame. If you prefer classic or minimalist solutions, try a win-win move: hang paintings on the walls that match their shape. That is, rectangular and oval for a rectangular wall, square and round for a square one.
A frame that matches the shape of the wall - a classic option. However, if you are creating a composition, you can experiment with a random selection of different shapes. However, in this case, it is necessary to carefully monitor the semantic community so as not to destroy harmony.
Play with shapes and sizes.Thinking through the composition, do not immediately place pictures on the wall. Lay them out on the floor to see the result. Perhaps something needs to be changed. Then stick sheets of paper to the wall with sticky tape that match the size and shape of your paintings. Only after that, if everything suits you, you can proceed directly to the placement of the frames.
Complex calculations can be replaced by one picture of an unexpected shape.Tip 4: Keep the proportions
The recommendation may seem obvious, but many people forget about it when they see a painting they like. Massive paintings are not suitable for a small kitchen - it is better to select 2-3 small drawings in neat frames here.
A few small paintings and the kitchen looks amazing. And vice versa. If you have a spacious room, a small picture can simply get lost in space. Therefore, carefully compare the sizes.
Exception - if the kitchen is overloaded with other details.Oddly enough, the same advice can be applied to the plot of the paintings. You may be a fan of marine art, but you will agree that the replica of the Ninth Wave will look strange in a 9x12 frame. Therefore, use common sense and find those paintings that suit your kitchen.
Landscapes - a neutral option for everything.Tip 5. The Laws of Vertical and Horizontal
Improper placement of a painting can destroy the balance of your room and make it disproportionate. Therefore, you should be careful with the placement of pictures. If she is alone, everything is much easier. However, if you want to hang a composition of several elements, you will have to act taking into account the laws of geometry.
Do not forget about the geometry of the room.Visually outline for yourself the center of the picture, which will remain in the center of the plot and hang the rest of the drawings along the vertical or horizontal axis from it. This is a versatile composition that is well suited for both modern and for.
Good placement example. At the same time, keep in mind that the correct approach in this matter will help you visually improve the perception of the room.
For example, horizontal placement is good for a small kitchen with high ceilings. Thus, you will be able to smooth out the disproportion in dimensions. Conversely, vertical placement will help you make the room look taller.
Don't know where to hang a picture and are afraid to get confused? Put it on the fridge!Tip 6. Think about lighting
Even the most beautiful painting will be lost if hung in a dark corner. In addition, the lines of the picture may be distorted due to the play of light and shadow. Therefore, it is important to consider how you will cover your paintings.
Proper lighting is the key to success.First of all, think about how the light from the already installed lighting fixtures will fall. Perhaps after that you will have to come up with a new place for the picture.
A good move is to install special thin horizontal lamps, which can often be seen in museums. Of course, we do not encourage you to buy expensive equipment. However, its imitation will play a good service: the picture will be correctly illuminated from above, so all its beauty will be revealed.
Such illumination reveals the beauty of the picture.By the way: Don't forget about natural light. Most paints, including oils and watercolors, do not tolerate direct sunlight. The colors fade and a kind of patina can go over the pattern, which will not decorate it. Therefore, never hang pictures in front of a window.
In addition, oil paintings should not be hung directly next to heating lamps - even if the painting is processed using special technologies, constant heating will have a bad effect on the durability of colors.
Hang pictures a short distance from the stove if they are not heat resistant. The type of picture also depends on the lighting. For example, if the room itself is dark, not too lit, it is better to refuse miniatures with a lot of details - without lighting, they simply cannot be seen.
Advice 7. Decide on the height
Since the main value of paintings in the kitchen is aesthetic, most often designers recommend hanging them directly at eye level. An exception is the dining table, where the canvases can be placed a little lower or a little higher. However, do not forget that in the latter case, it is important to make sure that none of the people getting up will cling to the picture, especially if there are protruding elements on the frame.
Proper height is important for a painting. There are other nuances that we recommend paying attention to :
- Do you plan to place pictures on several walls at once? In this case, it is very important that the effect of negligence is not created. Make sure that the bottom edges of the frames are at the same level. Otherwise, the kitchen will look too gaudy.
- If you're into small pictures, hang them at eye level or just below. If you hang them too high, you will most likely not be able to see what is depicted on them.
- Prefer big images? Here, too, there is a rule. The bottom edge of the painting must be directly level with the middle of the wall. However, if your walls are too high, you can slightly raise the picture - so you can smooth out the imbalance.
- Pictures above a bar or dining table can be hung below eye level, but should not be placed close to the table top. Otherwise, you risk smearing the image. For the same reasons, you should not place drawings above the stove and work surface.
In general, we advise you to evaluate the result before hanging a picture - the design of your kitchen plays too big a role, so the general recommendations may be slightly adjusted depending on the interior.
Maintain horizon.Tip 8. Mirror Placement
A popular design technique is to place an art gallery in front of the headset, mirroring the apron. Here, too, there are rules that you will have to follow if you want the kitchen to look beautiful and harmonious.
Take care of a straight line.In this case, the row should be very clear, so you have to work with a construction meter. At the same time, it is not necessary to select paintings clearly in the size of the apron in order to ensure symmetry. There are several other ways to give your kitchen a beautiful and stylish look:
- You can align the top edge of the paintings with the top edge of the backsplash. This technique is well suited for small square kitchens.
- The lower edge of the frames can be placed at the level of the table top of the headset. This way you will make the kitchen visually higher. However, make sure that no one will cling to the pictures - this method is only suitable if the wall opposite the apron is free of furniture.
- Universal method - according to the level of the window opening. It suits every type of room.
Tip 9. Think about how to fit large paintings
Sometimes you want to hang a large canvas or fresco in the kitchen. In this case, it is very important that the surroundings of the painting be as simple as possible - plain wall decoration, not too pretentious furniture.
The larger the picture, the more demanding the rules. If you ordered a full-wall printed canvas, the rest of the surfaces must have an even, neutral color. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting too pretentious lurid cuisine.
Such a picture needs careful planning.By the way: In this case, it is not necessary to buy expensive wallpapers. It is quite possible to get by with photo wallpaper, the care of which is many times easier than for paintings.
Tip 10: Remember safety
Never hang pictures directly over a gas stove - the slightest spark can be enough to set the canvas on fire. The exception is glazed paintings in a glass frame. However, make sure the glass is fireproof.
Anyway, the frame in the kitchen is almost a must-have.Even glazed pictures in wooden frames should not be hung next to the sink. Gradually, the frame will swell and deform from the constant influence of moisture. And there is no talk of ordinary ones - it won’t even take a month for the picture to deteriorate.
Tip 11. Use common sense
Of course, you are free to furnish your home however you like. However, images for the kitchen should still be selected with caution. It is unlikely that Bosch's paintings (we do not belittle their artistic value, but still!) Or illustrations for an anatomical atlas will add appetite to you.
A picture in the kitchen should stimulate appetite, not scare it away.Landscapes, still lifes, abstraction are considered classics for the kitchen. So choose what you like, but with a little regard.
A neutral image is better than a complex composition.Do not forget about the quality of the paintings - if it is not too high, instead of decorating, you risk completely spoiling the interior of your kitchen.
Tip 12. Or maybe it's better not to hang it?
If you like frequent changes, it is likely that you will soon get tired of the paintings or want to move them somewhere else.
