Hanging baskets

Lyudmila Kombarova

Hanging baskets appeared in Russia not very long ago, somewhere at the end of the 20th century. But now it seems like they've always been there. You can create flower arrangements in such baskets with your own hands even now. Already flowering seedlings are sold inexpensively. And ahead of two summer months and our warm autumn.

Hanging baskets can be conditionally divided into two groups: the actual basket with a diameter of 25 to 45 cm made of wire, wicker, wooden slats and plastic or ceramic hanging containers. They are, of course, cheaper than baskets, but they can accommodate only 1 - 2 types of plants. It turns out cute, but you won’t achieve the magnificent beauty of the basket. And when there are a lot of such pots, but in one place, the effect of a Christmas tree overloaded with toys is created. But who likes what. nine0007

Let's focus on a standard basket with a steel mesh frame and large cells. The hanging basket you choose should match the style of your garden, and its size should match the variety of plants you plant. The next mandatory purchase is a dense coconut fiber liner. They are made of felt, fiber, pressed peat, sphagnum moss. Never use garden soil for filling, which is highly compacted, which leads to rotting of the roots. The soil in the basket should be light, nutritious, well permeable and at the same time retain water. It is better to purchase nutrient soil such as "Flower", "Live Earth". When watering, avoid sudden drops from severe drought to abundant water. Simple rules: in the sun in the heat we water more often than in the shade; more capacity - less watering; containers painted in light colors heat up less. Get a watering can with a long curved spout - it will become an indispensable assistant. nine0007

Plants in containers eat up the necessary nutrition quickly. And after a month of life, the first top dressing will be required. Blooming - phosphorus-potassium, decorative-deciduous - nitrogen-containing. The organo-mineral fertilizer "Rainbow" has proven itself well.

When planting plants in one container, do not be greedy, follow the measure. After all, they will grow and destroy each other. Plants in the basket are placed as follows: compact, undersized in the center, ampelous along the edges. Another option: large (relatively) in the middle, and around them - kids. nine0007

Plants of light: petunia, pelargonium, sweet pea (dwarf), coleus, verbena, scaevola, continuously flowering bidens with many delightful varieties. In semi-shady places: balsams, lobelia, bacopa, dichondra, antirinum. And in September, faded letniki can be replaced with blooming pansies with ampelous partners, ivy-shaped boudra, greenfinch. Choose plants so that they are comfortable in a small space, and even surrounded by neighbors. Foliage should be plentiful, excluding voids. nine0007

Hang baskets securely. Make sure the hanging hooks are strong. Filled with earth, with plants, and even after watering, they become very heavy.

We will tell you which hanging houseplants do not need special care and harmoniously complement the interior.

Contents of the article

There is no doubt that indoor plants (regardless of their size) make the space more comfortable and pleasant. If your home does not have room for lush house trees, then we advise you to consider buying hanging houseplants that do not take up much space. This is also a great option for those who have pets who are not averse to scatter the ground, gnaw on leaves, or even turn the pot over. nine0007

Caring for a hanging plant may sound complicated, but it's not: before planting, you need to find out how much light each type of plant needs and how often it needs to be watered. For example, a south-facing window is best for plants that need bright light. However, many of the hanging plants can thrive in low natural light conditions.

Where to hang indoor plants

Sun or shade? Wet place or dry? Where to place the plant? It depends on what conditions it needs and whether you can provide them. Here are some ideas for where to place hanging houseplants. nine0007

Better hanging houseplants

Pothos

This hardy houseplant is ideal for beginners because it is extremely resistant to infrequent watering and lack of light. In general, it does not require special care. Pothos has brightly colored leaves that grow well in sufficient sunlight. Its long vines can droop down or grow up the trellis. This type of plant prefers moderate light and not very plentiful watering. nine0007

Boston Fern

Fern is one of the most popular plants for its lush and textured foliage. The fern is an inexpensive houseplant, which, by the way, is not dangerous for pets. Boston ferns need constant light moisture, so they are best placed in the bathroom or kitchen. An important point: ferns can often fall foliage, so be prepared to clean it regularly.

Philodendron hearty

Philodendron heart-leaved is a climbing plant with shiny, heart-shaped leaves hanging down in a cascade. It prefers diffused light and moderate humidity. Experts advise wiping the leaves with a damp cloth from time to time to remove accumulated dust. This will give the leaves a shine and allow for more efficient photosynthesis.

Orchid

Orchid is not as difficult to care for as it might seem. In fact, this is a very unpretentious plant. It blooms for months (or even years) if you give it bright indirect sunlight and water every week. nine0007

Christmas cactus

The curved shape of this flowering plant looks great in a hanging pot. Keep an eye on its appearance throughout the year, as depending on the season, the color of its flowers changes. The Christmas cactus needs bright light and occasional but plentiful watering.

Spider plant

This plant has long striped leaves and curved stems with tiny shoots at the ends that can be pinched off to grow new shoots. It is recommended to place this plant in a room with bright light, but it will easily adapt to conditions with low light. It should be watered when the soil is slightly dry. nine0007

Tip: If you notice that stripes are disappearing on the leaves, try moving the plant to a brighter sunny location.

Tillandsia

Epiphytic air plant. It has spectacular inflorescences and practically does not require care. Often sold in a glass bowl, so you can hang it in a conspicuous place to constantly enjoy its beauty. Tellandsia needs bright light, infrequent watering and periodic spraying. nine0007

English ivy

English ivy hangs beautifully down the sides of a hanging basket or pot. The plant prefers moderate light, but easily adapts to low light conditions. It should be watered only when the soil is completely dry.

Thread of pearls

The very name of this plant makes you want to buy it. Tiny beads dangle from a long stem, giving this succulent a pear-like shape.
