We are thinking of splitting a big bedroom into two. I’ve seen posts on here about box rooms, and I’m just wondering if we’d be taking a good sized room and ruining it. Doors to both rooms would be fire doors

Depends why you are doing it as to whether it's a good idea or not.
Remember it can always be 'undone' by future owners.
I'd say a box room is any room that can't fit a single bed and chest of drawers - ie too small for a bedroom so only good for boxes.

Neighbours have find it and I’m looking at their photos on rightmove.
They have single beds in my look fairly spacious
The room dimensions would be approx 10x10 and 12x10, but not perfect squares/rectangles because of eaves and window alcoves

If both dimensions are less than 6 feet, definitely a box room.
One dimension > 6 feet would be a small bedroom.

We’d be going it to have a study. My husband works from home sometimes and has taken over the kitchen. I thought it might make our house more attractive to have an extra bedroom/study

DS's bedroom literally fits a bed (no frame), a modest wardrobe and could squeeze in a small bedside unit.
It is only just big enough to be a single bedroom.
A box room, I'd say is not big enough for a single bed but could be used as a nursery with smaller furniture such as a cot.
DS likes his small room and finds it cosy and easy to organise. We had to construct a mid-rise sleeper which overhangs the window as there was no space to assemble a standard cabin bed frame, and any other bed would have obstructed the radiator.
It works much better for him than sharing.

But mine are both rectangles with no alcoves/sloping ceilings so are probably bigger than yours would be. It’s amazing how much you can get into a room

No, a boxroom was where you stored boxes.
My parents had a box room that was used as a linen cupboard in their time, it had a small dormer window. As a child I thought it was quite magical and would have loved it to be my bedroom (my actual bedroom was much bigger).

My friend had that in her bedroom when we were growing up. I had no storage in my room so was very very jealous of her huge cupboard she could crawl into!

Boxroom becomes a bedroom if it can fit a bed and furniture and function as a bedroom.
If not them it becomes an office or boxroom.

Yes that is what a 'real' box room is but the meaning has evolved to also mean a small room. Our box room is 5.8 Square metres.

I was just going to come on here and say - it's a room without a window to the outside. Can't be called a bedroom even if it's big enough for a super king size bed.
The link posted above is interesting on what size constitutes a big enough room to be classed as a bedroom. I lived in a flat in which the bedroom was 9'6" x 6'9" and it was ridiculous to do anything but sleep in.
I used to get dressed in the kitchen.

Our box room is a little over 6ft square, and not really much use as it's so small.
At the moment, toddler DS is crammed in there until BIL moves out, and then he will have a bigger bedroom. So when DS has vacated this tiny space, what do we do with it? We have a 5 bed house and we already turned one of them into a dressing room (DH's job means he often comes and goes in the middle of the night, especially in winter. The dressing room means he doesn't disturb me when he's getting ready for work or bed). We have easy access to the loft so don't really need it as storage, we've no need for an office/study either.
Before DS came along, it used to be a toy room for DD but just playing with one thing completely filled the floor space and you couldn't move in there. DH wants to turn it back into a toy room for both kids but it was ridiculous with the toys for one child, never mind two!
So inspire me, what do you do with your tiny box room?

Ours is used as toddler DDs bedroom, but it's a bit bigger than yours- maybe 8x8 or 9x9 feet.
In your situation I would probably use it as the dressing room, and convert the current dressing room (which is presumably bigger) into a guest room/office. I know you say you don't need an office, but it can be handy just for life admin stuff.

I don't think turning it into the dressing room would work, we have a big triple wardrobe, chest of drawers and a dressing table in there.
The room is just not big enough!

Definitely sex dungeon.
Six feet square is just big enough.
We have a rail in ours and shelving to keep stuff for hobbies - martial arts kit, motorbiking, horse riding gear, that sort of thing. We also have the washing machine in there, which freed up a very important hole in the kitchen for a dishwasher.

You have to walk through ours to get to the bathroom so no good as a sex dungeon.
As we've done each room up it's become the dumping ground for all the random shit we don't want cluttering our new space. Now it's the only room left and there's nowhere to shovel the shit to

Hygiene is vital to any sex dungeon! Add a pair of (wipe down) curtains to hide the manacles and sex swing from people innocently going to the bathroom, perfect.
Our not-a-sex-dungeon-oh-well box room is also the only one we haven't done up. Doesn't really seem much point.

Our last house had 5 bedrooms.......did you buy it from us?
The box room was used as a laundry room as it had the tumble dryer/heated airer/laundry baskets in in it.
Also we had a ginormous mirror in this room so me & dc would use it to dry/straighten/curl our hair.
If you did buy our house I hope you're enjoying the wood burning stove. I miss it well apart from the dust. Though am in the process of getting a wood burner in our new house. Hopefully we won't get as much dust as this time we're nowhere near a quarry,

I had one a similar size and it was used for storing stuff DD1 had outgrown until DD2 needed it.
Now I would use it as a library with bookcases lamp and arm chair where no one else could enter...

We don’t have a box room but if I did I would put a sofa bed in there and let the kids use it as as a toy room / den until they are bigger and have friends to sleepover .
Extra beds are always handy when the kids are growing up .
Are you sure it’s 6x6 ? That is very small .

Our box room is 11yo DD's bedroom.
There is space for a single loft bed with desk and chest of drawers underneath and a wardrobe to the side. Ikea is fantastic for furnishing and maximising the use of tiny spaces.

We have a 5 bed house with a box room. We knocked the wall out so that the box room became a large space that was part of the upstairs landing, not a seperate room (So currently a 4 bed house).
In that landing space we have a sofa, TV on the wall and an Xbox. It's the kids (teens and preteens) gaming area. There's also a desk under the TV for homework/laptop.
Shelving contains all out office-type equipment.
I like that gaming is done in an open space in the house, not shut away in bedrooms.
