Serious crafters need a serious craft room. It's not hyperbole: if you are (or know) a crafter, you've seen how supplies multiply. What was once a stash of embroidery thread and a nice pair of sharp sewing scissors suddenly becomes a stockpile of every DMC color, 60 skeins of high-quality yarns—and an entire screen-printing setup.
Face it. This kind of hobby needs dedicated space. And as a bonus, this is your big chance to be totally creative with your decor—after all, a craft room should feel inspirational! But as all creatives know, a blank canvas can be terrifying. These pretty craft rooms are sure to inspire your next redecorating project.

Consider Adjustable Shelving
Refined RoomsYou may love scrapbooking and cross-stitching now, but who's to say what you'll adore in a year's time? Maybe you'll pick up crocheting. Or perhaps you'll start taking drawing classes. Prepare for your inevitable shifts in interests by installing adjustable shelving. Most home-improvement stores—and, of course, IKEA—sell easy-to-install adjustable shelving units such as the ones in this craft room from Refined Rooms that give your craft room the flexibility you need.

Give Your Pegboard Some Glitz
Place of My TasteA pegboard is a craft room storage essential, but don't limit yourself to bland, everyday white. Craft rooms deserve a bold hand with color and glamour, so extend the accent shade you've chosen throughout the space onto your organization tools. Place of My Taste's glitzy pegboard reflects her gold-and-white-themed craft room—and it's the perfect spot to store paint, tools, and washi tape.

Incorporate Your Favorite Things
Home to HeatherWhen designing your dream craft room, consider the reasons you love to craft. Are you inspired by Totoro? Do you adore drawing characters from your favorite fandom? Or do you adore your favorite fixer-upper bloggers who can transform vintage yard sale finds into works of art? Whatever strikes your crafting fancy, embrace it in your space. Blogger Home to Heather filled her room with antique finds so that she's never far from what she loves most.

Don't Be Afraid to Go Eclectic
Taylor MadeIn a room dedicated to creation make sure to give yourself plenty of inspiration. If that means your decor may look a little eclectic, then that's okay. Look to blogger Taylor Made, who transformed her bright-white craft room into a haven of color and cheer by mixing disparate patterns and bright artwork. The final touch: An oversized work table, perfect for hashing out your creative vision.

Take Advantage of Unused Space
Driven by DecorDo you love to craft but not sure where to store your supplies? Dream of a dedicated craft room of your own—but stuck in a cramped abode? Look for unused spaces to transform. Blogger Driven by Decor elevated a common stairway landing into a colorful and well-organized craft room just by stretching a wide desk across the space and adding funky (and creativity-inducing) wallpaper.

Bring the Outdoors In
The House That WillUnless you live in one of those glorious, spring-all-year-'round climates, you probably can't literally craft outdoors. But there's no reason you can't let the outdoors in. Houseplants add life to your space, and natural products such as rattan and wicker provide much-needed texture. Blogger The House That Will integrated gorgeous greens and natural motifs into her craft room to create an inspirational and natural-feeling space.

Motivate Yourself
Pretty ProvidenceYes, inspirational signs that say "Get It Done" may be cliche—but they're cliche for a darn good reason. Motivation can occasionally be hard to come by, and it's easy to beat yourself up when you're staring at a blank page (or swath of embroidery cloth) unable to decide what comes next. Follow Pretty Providence's lead and hang your favorite inspirational saying on your wall—that way, when things seem hard, all you have to do is look up.

Give Yourself Room to Grow
One Dog WoofDo you have a lot of supplies to store? When setting up storage in your craft room, make sure you consider all of the tools, fabric scraps, and other supplies you'll likely purchase in the coming weeks and months. It isn't about what you have now—it's about where you might go next.
If you've got tons of teeny supplies, vintage stores may be a godsend when renovating your craft room. Just check out 1 Dog Woof's revamped craft room for inspiration, where two gray-painted card catalogs provide valuable storage space for her wide collection of embroidery threads. Reining in an out-of-control collection is much less difficult with space to organize, and this common thrift-store find promises to help sort your craft room mess lickety-split.

Make Your Seat a Throne
Casa WatkinsCrafting involves spending a lot of time sitting on your butt—and after a while, your behind might start to ache. Treat it nicely by investing in a high-quality office chair, or jazzing up the one you already have, like in this stunning pale-blue, craft room by Casa Watkins. By draping a fur over her high-backed chair, she adds a soft element to the space—and makes working far more comfortable.

Go Big or Go Home
Addison's WonderlandAn expansive, wall-spanning mural may seem a bit extra, but Addison's Wonderland proves it works beautifully—especially when creating a craft room for kids. Paired with the gentle, robin's-egg blue, this dreamlike, avant-garde mural makes the space feel plucked from Wonderland (hey, maybe that's where the blog name comes from). Making bold choices is guaranteed to inspire some serious creativity.

Use Task Lighting
A well-lit workspace is essential, especially when it comes to detail-oriented crafts. If your overhead lighting isn't strong enough, bring in a second table lamp. Or save surface space with a sconce. Hang a pretty picture up, paint the walls blue, and add some contrast with a modern lucite chair, like this small workspace designed by J.P. Horton.

Keep Supplies Easy to Access
If your craft room is dedicated to weaving and/or knitting materials, take note of this workshop belonging to artist Lindsey Campbell, who runs the weaving-centric blog Hello Hydrangea. Keep all your things easily accessible with a modular wall shelving unit so all crafting materials (yarn, rope, winders, and more) stays organized. Then use glass jars to host remnants for recycling and baskets to assist with organization.

Make It Kid-Friendly
Kids need a place to let their imaginations soar, too. But they also need a designated place to organize all their markers, pens, paintbrushes, and papers, so make sure you invest in some items that keep it all in one place. An easel with built-in storage for pens, plus a portable carrier to go on the table, and some hooks or a wall unit to hang the finished products on display, as seen in this kid-friendly craft room by Natasha Baradaran, are all great ideas.

Use Your Walls as a Canvas
Speaking of kid-friendly craft rooms... If you're setting up a craft room for kids to use, consider using chalk paint so the kids can literally write on the walls. Regan Baker secured catch-alls to the wall in this playroom to keep chalk organized and easy to find.

Customize for Your Craft
A horizontal paper cutter at the end of a counter-height desk allows for easy access to kraft paper for sketching, or gift wrap for presents. Designer Barbara Kurgan included a custom spot beneath the tabletop to keep often-used materials hidden but on hand.

Opt for a Large Desk
Do yourself a favor and choose a large table or desk instead of something tiny. Even if it takes up most of the room, a big table will allow you to spread out and get creative. If it doesn't have storage or drawers, just use your walls.

Add Temporary Storage
Craft rooms tend to accumulate tons of scraps. Bring in bins and boxes to stay organized and keep clutter to a minimum (or at least out of plain sight). Take note from this craft room in Sharon Lee's Santa Monica bungalow and tuck them under a table.

Choose Pretty Office Supplies
Instead of choosing boring supplies, opt for design-friendly options like that lucite tape dispenser. Then take things like paperclips and thumbtacks out of their original packaging and store them in stylish catchalls and bowls.

Consider a Statement Wall
Wallpaper is an easy way to beautify your craft room and make it look more polished in case you ever want to use it for something else. Opt for a grayscale print, so your vibrant artwork and crafts can really pop, as seen in this room by Tali Roth Designs.

Make Space Wherever Possible
If you don't have a spare room for your creative endeavors, it's still worth making space wherever possible. And you can do so in a way that doesn't interrupt the existing flow or feel too cluttered. In this bedroom by Catherine Kwong, the long bench and floating desk, as well as built-in storage and a dedicated pinboard wall, provide plenty of space for getting creative.

Make It Comfy
Making your craft room cozy can have a surprisingly big impact on productivity. If you're comfortable, you'll be able to work uninterrupted for hours. Throw a sheepskin over your chair for added comfort and style points.

Spread Out Your Mood Boards
Don't be afraid to stick things to the walls. In fact, a physical mood board can help you when you're in a creative rut while also beautifying the entire room. It's a great way to brainstorm and track your progress, so don't worry about keeping the walls bare. Lark & Linen proves just how pretty it can look here.

Install Built-Ins
Built-in storage will save you so much space. Opt for floating shelves to put your decor on display and then tuck away unsightly essentials into the cabinets below. A statement wall in paper or color you love will also inspire creativity. We're digging this fun blue print by Brooke Crew.

Keep It Neutral
Even if you're drawn to bright colors, a bold, complicated color scheme can make your workspace feel visually chaotic. Try a neutral palette that inspires a soothing headspace.

Use Your Kitchen
If you don't have space in your home for an entire craft room, just use a little nook in another room. Whether you convert a walk-in closet, or in this case with a craft space by Amber Interiors Design, just make it an offshoot of the kitchen, a little desk with a drawer and a stool is all you need to get crafty.

Have a Durable Sink
Doing arts and crafts can get messy. In fact, that's the only guarantee. So if you work with a lot of paints and pretty much any tool with pigment, you'll need a durable stainless sink. This stainless steel one with plenty of depth in a space by Leanne Ford Interiors is the perfect example.

Incorporate a Sliding Table
Whether your craft space is a room of its own or lives inside a larger room that serves a different function, a built-in sliding table is a huge space-saver. Karyn Millet added one to her home office here.

Dream Workshop 2.0 Photo review of the idea and options for the realization of the Master's dream: Own Workshop
REVIEW ON RECONSTRUCTION
-
Welcome to our "Dream Workshop Ideas" page* - your ideal workspace for creativity and work!
This is an update of the overview photo gallery, in which we have collected a variety of ideas and options for realizing a dream: My ideal Workshop. In version 2.0, the information is structured, supplemented with explanations, and of course, many new diagrams and photos .
* This photo review was created for informational purposes and is not a product, you can print this page yourself and for free.
What lover or Master does not dream of having his own private corner where he could embody his dreams and ideas? And our Russian person has a Kulibin vein laid down with genes. Give us only time, place and tools in our hands and oh, we will turn around here, and how the soul will sing ...
In this photo-gallery article, we continue to collect a variety of ideas and options for realizing our Dream: from a toolbox and a workbench in an apartment (house, shed) to a full-fledged, free-standing Workshop equipped with a full range of equipment and tools that you may need. Be sure to consider such a solution as a mobile (mobile) workshop. There is also a photo
Workshop from a historical point of view - as carpenters did in past centuries. Of course, modern solutions have also been added.
Everyone has their own path to their Dream Workshop, but as in any other business, the solutions and the result depend on the approach and experience. You can do it yourself as easy as possible. Often, this is exactly what we are used to: to make it quickly and cheaply, without embellishment and amenities. Because there is always not enough money or time, and therefore we have what we have. But still, using examples of other solutions - with invention, a thorough approach and creative hands - we will show how you can make your own Dream Workshop .
Let's get started! Dream Workshop 2.0
Content (quick links down - page navigation):
-
Workplace: table or workbench
-
Storage systems: from shelves to cabinets
-
Workshop furnishing
-
Planning: Workshop layouts and equipment layouts
-
Workshop on wheels or mobile workshop
Each of these sections will be discussed in detail below.
Let's take a look at some examples of work surfaces.
The working surface and its execution strongly depends on the direction of your activity: modeling, carpentry or some other craft. It also depends on the conditions of accommodation and your capabilities.
Consider in general the options for working surfaces, depending on the direction of activity.
Modeller's workplace looks like this:
Popular photo!
The photo above shows the modeller's workplace. Many Masters also have to work - just a part of the wall and a desktop. But not everyone will have such an organized space that the order will turn out by itself, as a result of the placement of tools and paint material in abundance in open structured access on the walls within an arm's length radius. The desktop is completely freed, there is only a protective mat with markings. On the left on the magnetic holders are the tools necessary for the work. Local illumination completes the idea of the Ideal mini-Workshop.
Jeweler's workstation and table:
Popular photo!
In the photo above - not a standard, but convenient solution - a semi-circular workbench for precise small work - suitable for a jeweler and for any Craftsman working with small items - everything is within reach.
Popular photo!
Despite the antiquity, and now such a table - bureau is attractive for a hobbyist, with original swivel drawers:
In the photo below is another "folding" workplace (transformer) of the Hobby Master: The Magic Box - "Magic Box", so named because of its versatility, made in Switzerland in the 1950s by Mummenthaler & Meier.
A fully foldable multifunctional desk or compact home office that allows you to get rid of any work clutter by simply closing the doors. It has built-in lighting above the tabletop.
Dimensions open: 167 cm x 73 cm x 113 cm, closed: 83 cm x 53 cm x 113 cm.
And another variant of Mummenthaler & Meier's rare The Magic Box, a 1950s tall teak cabinet has a hidden worktop surrounded by handy drawers and adjustable shelves.
Important note - for a seated workstation, the coverage area must be considered. The diagram shows the minimum allowable dimensions:
The workbench can be of various sizes and shapes. You can see more about this topic in our photo review of workbenches .
Mini Workbench:
It can be like a desktop:
and as a mini workshop Bench
folding carpentry workbench:
Desktop with a workbench:
Examples of a full carpentry workbench may look like this:
Here's what the industry standard recommends for carpentry workbenches.
"... In the carpentry workshop, workbenches are arranged perpendicular to the windows so that the light falls from the left. It is advisable to arrange workbenches in 4-5 rows of 4 workbenches in each row with a distance between rows of at least 100 cm. Area per carpenter: 4.5 sqm
The industry standard for wood-based joinery workbenches is:
-
Workbench height can be in three positions 700+15,790+15, 900+15 mm; tabletop dimensions: length - not less than 800, width - not less than 450 mm; moisture content of wood for the manufacture of workbench parts should not be more than 12%; all wooden parts must be made of hardwood (Lumber. GOST 2695-71) or softwood (GOST SEV 2369-80), provided that the main working surfaces are covered with plywood in accordance with GOST 3916-69; the height of the stool should be fixed in the range from 700 to 750 mm, the shape of the seat is round, with a diameter of 350 + 5 mm or square with a side of 350 + 5 mm; the average service life of carpentry workbenches must be at least 6 years (for the highest quality category - at least 8 years) ... "
What experienced Masters recommend: the height of the working surface of the table should be at the level of the phalanx of the thumb.
Regarding the height of the working surface when working while standing in ergonomics, there are the following recommendations:
in the picture First rice - for precision work, Second rice - for light work, Third rice - for heavy work:
More solid examples of carpentry workbenches:
The assembly table is of great importance in the workshop, where you can assemble products.
But in many cases, it is replaced by either a workbench or a multifunctional table.
In this regard, the MFT-3 table from Festool is an excellent ready-made solution:
and its smaller brothers who have taken this idea into service. For example, workbench KREG
DIYers went further and improved this idea in their own way:
Folding table a la Festul in a mobile version
Or a stationary table in addition to the MFT-3 table itself
All home-made improvements and options are in the 2019 update reviews
-
Development of Festool ideas and homemade solutions 2. 0
-
Variations on the Festool MFT 3 multifunction table
A large work surface is often needed in a workshop where large workpieces need to be worked on, and therefore often, in order to save space, a table or workbench can be combined with machines into a large single work surface:
Popular photo!
When a workshop is located in the garage, you want to have a mobile workplace, a table, a workbench, a machine tool (and more than one), a storage system - in one "bottle". As they say: "everything - to the maximum."
You can see a detailed review of workbenches on page "Carpentry workbenches and tables for carpentry"
Usually, the storage system begins with the simplest hooks and nails.
But it can be creative and tasteful. And even jars of salted cucumbers will look appropriate.
Many start with simple shelves and gradually expand into a tool cabinet
A simple, easy to repeat, yet beautiful and convenient way to organize tools. Everything is open and at your fingertips.
And here is the Japanese option for placing carpentry tools (now it’s clear why all Japanese planers are about the same height):
Deeper shelves are needed for European tools:
Popular photo!
In the photo above - a full-fledged wardrobe is made in a minimalist design without frills from furniture panels, slats and boards. But thanks to this, modern hand tools from Lie-Nelsen and Marples companies and grandfather's "antique" planers, grub tubes, calves, rotators and other carpentry "exotics" coexist perfectly in it.
An equally important question: how to store clamps. It can be a hanging shelf with lodgements:
Or on a movable trolley, you can make it yourself or buy it, for example Piher Rack on Wheels
Do not forget about the storage location of the material.
Moreover, the option in the photo below is preferable, as it provides good ventilation for almost every board.
Below is a photo and diagram of lumber storage on a mobile rack:
