How to take border off walls

Easy Ways to Remove Wallpaper Border

Removing wallpaper border can be tricky, whether you’re removing it from a painted wall or a wallpapered one.

Either way, to remove it without damaging the underlying walls or wallpaper, you’ll need to take your time. Below we’ve laid out the steps for the best way to remove wallpaper borders—without damaging your walls in the process.

How to Remove Wallpaper Border

Most wallpaper borders are easy to remove, especially those manufactured in relatively recently. The main tools it generally takes are a putty knife and some perseverance to lift the decorative accent and remove it without too much trouble.

Tools You’ll Need

Steps for Removing Wallpaper Border:

  1. Move furniture and other items into the middle of the room and cover with a plastic sheet or drop cloth.
  2. With a wallpaper scraper or putty knife, locate a seam and lift a bottom corner of the wallpaper border.
  3. Once a large enough section is peeled back with the knife, slowly peel the paper away by hand, applying steady and even pressure so it doesn’t tear. For areas that resist, slide the knife or scraper under the paper as you pull to loosen the glue’s grip.
  4. Once all the adhesive has been removed, wipe the area with a clean sponge and hot soapy water (dish soap will work), making sure you’ve removed all the residue, and allow it to dry.

Other Ways to Remove Wallpaper Border

If the border doesn’t come off easily or keeps tearing, leaving you to chip peel off pieces off bit by bit, step up the removal process with the following methods.

Warm Water and a Putty Knife

Fabric Softener and Water

Heat Gun or Wallpaper Steamer

Chemical Wallpaper Remover

If the paper still resists, enlist the help of a wallpaper removal product, following the directions on the label.

How to Remove Wallpaper - Best Way to Remove Wallpaper Border and Glue

Wallpaper is in vogue again, but that doesn't necessarily mean the wallpaper (or old-school border!) you inherited from previous homeowners is your style. If it's time for it to come down, fear not. You can accomplish the task without losing your mind with this simple guide to how to remove wallpaper.

Once it's down you can add a punch of style back to the wall with a new pattern (perhaps a removable wallpaper that will peel off with ease in the future) or a fresh coat of paint (try one of our editors' favorite wall colors). You might even be able to paint over your wallpaper, but be sure to read up on when it works and when it doesn't before going that route.

Now, time to say sayonara to your current wallpaper without damaging your drywall—and without a steamer. We've got you covered, from necessary safety steps to essential techniques. Plus, find pro tips, including how to make a homemade wallpaper remover using fabric softener.

How to Remove Wallpaper

What to Know Before You Start

Safety first. Removing wallpaper is going to be messy and wet (or at least damp) in the process, so make sure you start by turning off your electricity and taping off any outlets that are in the area where you are working (you'll want to remove the outlet covers so you can get to the wallpaper underneath).

We also recommend you start with a little mental preparation because the process will likely test your patience. Taking that wallpaper down can take lots of time and create a sticky mess (make sure you cover your baseboards and floors!), and midway through you might just question why you decided to do it in the first place. But it is doable, and the steps aren’t all that complicated. Give yourself about a weekend, give or take depending on square footage. By the end, you’ll have a nice clean wall ready to bring your next design vision to life.

Master This 3-Step Technique: Score, Wet, and Scrape

First, test a wallpaper seam with the tip of a metal putty knife, taking care not to gouge the drywall with the knife. If the paper comes up and peels off easily, you’re in luck! Peel away. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to soften the glue before you can strip the paper off.

Tip: Don’t use a plastic putty knife; they’re too thick to get under the paper. Also, consider filing down the edge of your metal putty knife so that it’s a bit more rounded. This will help you to avoid accidentally gouging your drywall when trying to lift up the paper.

To do this, grab yourself a wallpaper scoring tool, and roll the tool over the wallpaper in small sections. The scorer will create small tears in the paper (don’t press too hard or you’ll damage your wall), which will allow either water or a wallpaper stripping solution to soften the glue underneath the paper.

Spray the torn area of the wallpaper with the water or paper stripper (or dampen it using a wet sponge), and let sit for a few minutes to work on the glue.

Tip: Some suggest using a one-to-one mixture of fabric softener and hot water for this! The hotter the water, the better, so wear gloves.

Test a small area using your fingernail—if the paper comes off easily, you’re in business. If not, repeat the wetting process and let it sit a bit longer to do its thing.

When the perforated portion is wet and peels off easily when you test it, use the corner of your putty knife to strip off the paper. Don’t be surprised if the glue stays behind; we cover that piece of the puzzle in the next section. Repeat the entire process—scoring, wetting, scraping—until the wallpaper is gone.

How to Remove Wallpaper Glue

After you've removed all of the paper from a wall, you'll probably have sections or spots sticky with adhesive. The easiest way to remove these is to scrub the wall with hot soapy water (try liquid dish soap) and a sponge or wash cloth. You want to get all of the residue off the walls, so don't be tempted to skip this and paint right over it. You'll risk creating a mess that won't work well for painting or repapering.

Tip: Really having a hard time removing the glue? Try upping your game to a gel stripper.

How to Remove a Wallpaper Border

Wallpaper borders are removed in the same way as full panels (see instructions above) with the added challenge that most, if not all, of the work takes place from a step stool or ladder.

How to Remove Really Old Wallpaper

Gwendolyn Plath//Getty Images

Wallpaper that's decades old can be removed following the above tips and methods, too, but you may have to put a good deal of elbow grease into it, depending on whether it was professionally installed or not (professional installs tend to be harder to remove than DIY jobs). If your home is older, you may have plaster walls instead of drywall—the latter of which is softer and more prone to dampness and gouging—so be extra careful.

Some move abroad after a long preparation, others just pack their bags and fly away with the whole family.

This article contains 4 stories of people who moved in the spring of 2022. We tell them what surprised them how much they had to pay for housing rent and whether it was easy to equip life in a new place.

Story No. 1

Argentina: housing is easier to rent for cash dollars

Anastasia Chizhevskaya

moved to Buenos Aires

Author profile

Where did they go. In Russia, I was engaged in a business that was associated with environmental education. Since 2020, my husband and I have lived in two cities: we spent most of the year in Krasnaya Polyana and sometimes came to Moscow for work. In February, we temporarily moved to Turkey, and in April - to Argentina.

For the past four years, we have been saving most of our income: we have invested in real estate in Russia and in the stock market. Due to this, it was possible to collect an airbag and a small capital, which can be used to start a new business. Therefore, the question of finding a new job for us is not yet worth it. We plan to settle in Argentina and look for business and investment opportunities in Latin America.

What you were looking for. We had a list of criteria:

  1. Light walls.
  2. Modern renovation.
  3. Good food. Ideally with a dishwasher, but in Argentina this is rare, so we crossed this wish off the list.
  4. Living room plus one or two bedrooms.
  5. Good view. There are many window-to-window or wall-view houses here.
  6. Not ground floor.
  7. House with video surveillance and security. This is important in Argentina.
  8. Presence of heating.

/podushka-bezopasnosti/

How I accumulated an airbag

It didn’t matter to us whether the apartment would be furnished, because we found out in advance the cost of furniture on mercadolibre.com — this is a service like our “Ozone” and “ Avito. I figured that the purchase of furniture would pay off in full in a year, since the prices for apartments without it are much lower. Then it can be sold or moved to a new home.

Avito: how to avoid scammers

Looking for housing. They started looking for an apartment already in Argentina. For the first month, we rented an apartment on Airbnb in the Hollywood district of Palermo. A small apartment with one bedroom and a living room cost $1,400. It's expensive, but it met our requirements.

Russian cards had already stopped working at that time. I had an account opened in Turkey, but not all Turkish cards work on the Internet. And I paid for the apartment with my friend's Uzbek card.

/poluchil-kartu-v-kazakhstane/

How I got two bank cards in Kazakhstan

We expected a budget of $1,000 per month for a furnished apartment, but we were ready to increase it to $1,500 if the apartment was heated and we liked it very much. If without furniture, then no more than $700.

I tried to search for housing in different ways:

  1. On major real estate sites: ZonaProp, Argenprop and Mercado Libre.
  2. In the telegram channel - here, upon a specific request, a Russian-speaking intermediary helps to select options from trusted realtors. If the housing is suitable, then you will need to pay a commission for assistance of $50-100. This is convenient, since you do not have to communicate with the locals. As a result, I found an apartment through this channel.
  3. In Facebook groups. There was only trash.

Buenos Aires has accommodations for every taste, from studios to private homes. You can rent a house here even in central areas. The prices for apartments are different: we have friends who rent a studio in the center for $350. House prices start at several thousand dollars.

“Didn’t find Tango”: what surprised me Argentina

When I started looking, I was confused by the prices in the ads: similar apartments could be found for both $1,000 and $180,000. I assumed that some indicated the price for a month, and others for a five-year contract, but it still did not converge. But it turned out that the symbol for the Argentine peso looked exactly like the dollar: some ads had prices in dollars, and some in pesos. If you don't know, it's hard to guess.

I had to communicate a lot with realtors. They love to call and record voice calls. Most do not speak English well. I know a little Spanish, but I can't talk on the phone yet. When you explain that you do not know the language well, they just speak louder and repeat several times in the hope that you will understand.

Without language, you can chat on WhatsApp using Google Translate or find a Russian-speaking intermediary. The people here are nice, but they are not in a hurry, so it’s not so easy to schedule an apartment viewing with a realtor.

What did you find. The search took almost a month. The decision was made at the third review. The apartment was almost perfect. It had underfloor heating - this is important, since there is no central heating in the city. Winter is quite mild - in June the temperature is +8…15 °C, but without heating the house is as cold as outside. Many people heat with split systems, but we don’t like this option: it quickly becomes stuffy.

/patagonia/

I hitchhiked Argentinean Patagonia

We have a fully furnished apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen-living room. Dishwasher missing. We plan to buy only cooking utensils and a multicooker. If we decide to extend the contract, we will buy a dishwasher and a robot vacuum cleaner - according to approximate estimates, all this will require about $ 1,000.

This is our bedroom It has access to a small balcony overlooking the city

Rent and expenses. Our rent is $1300. This includes utility bills and home maintenance costs - they are called "gastos". The house has an electronic concierge, video surveillance and a small swimming pool in the yard. Initially, they wanted $1,400 for an apartment, but we are not shy about bargaining, so we got a discount.

The realtor's commission is either the cost of one month, or 10-20% of the contract amount. We paid $1300.

When we made an advance payment for an apartment to a realtor, she copied the numbers of all the bills into the advance payment agreement - we saw this for the first time. When they paid for the apartment, they did not do this. We agreed to transfer the money in cash through a realtor. Under the contract, we pay in dollars. The next payment is in three months.

The communal expenses here are partially subsidized by the state, so the amount is small. If the cost of it exceeds 1000 pesos (277 R) per month, then we will have to pay extra. But we saw the receipt of the previous tenants: for May they paid 800 pesos (221 R).

Additionally, we order cleaning. The standard price is 500-600 pesos per hour. Our apartment is cleaned in four hours. Last time I paid 2100 pesos (554 R).

Agreement and documents. We signed a lease for six months. Initially, the landlord wanted to conclude a contract for only three months, but in the end, they agreed to sign two three-month contracts at once. It is more profitable for us, because the commission of a real estate agency does not depend on the term. Therefore, the longer we live in this apartment, the less the commission will be in terms of a month. Then the contract can be extended.

Under the terms of the contract, we paid three months in advance, left a deposit of one month, paid the realtor's commission and $50 for mediation to the author of the telegram channel where we found the apartment. It came out 6550 $.

Standard lease agreement, but with a preponderance towards the lessor. For example, it was indicated that we were being rented an apartment with freshly painted walls and we had to return the apartment with the same ones. But in fact, people lived in the apartment before us and the walls were not painted after them. Therefore, we asked that this paragraph be deleted. There were a few minor edits.

We signed an inventory of the property with the lease agreement. It listed everything that was in the apartment: dishes, cutlery, towels, appliances, and even plants. We took photos of shortcomings, such as small chips on the tiles and scratches on the walls, and immediately sent them to a chat with the realtor and the owner so that there would be no complaints later. This approach has saved us money more than once.

Renting an apartment does not give any rights other than the right to live in it. Long-term rent does not allow you to get a residence permit here, as, for example, in Turkey. But there are 14 other grounds for a residence permit, and after two years of legal life, you can apply for citizenship. Argentina allows you to have a second citizenship.

Grounds for obtaining a residence permit in Argentina - government website

The main advantages of housing are warm floors and a good location. When friends come to visit us, they are surprised how warm it is here. The only thing you can complain about is that by the standards of Buenos Aires we live in an expensive area and pay above average for an apartment.

Features of local housing. In Argentina, there are several features of finding housing.

Firstly, there are okupas here - people who are looking for unoccupied apartments and move in there by intrusion or deceit: for example, they stop paying rent. It is almost impossible to evict them, especially if they are with children. If okupas move into housing, you will have to go to court and wait until it runs out.

Apartment owners are afraid of this, so in Argentina there is such a thing as a guarantee - a document that confirms that there is a certain income in pesos or that an Argentinean with an income in pesos vouches for you. This document is needed if you rent an apartment and pay in pesos. Without a guarantee, it is almost impossible to rent a house for pesos for a long time.

/argentina/

Life in Argentina

Once I found a beautiful 100-meter apartment for 180,000 pesos (49,896 R) a month. But in order to withdraw it, a guarantee was needed for a monthly income of 700,000 pesos - approximately 194,040 R. I suggested to the realtor to confirm the income in dollars, but she explained that nobody here is interested in this, it is necessary to confirm the income in pesos. And when I asked what to do, she offered to find five or six Argentines who would vouch for me. One Argentinean would not be enough, because almost no one here has such salaries. It was funny, absurd and humiliating at the same time.

After this story, we stopped looking for apartments in pesos. In addition, inflation is high in Argentina. If you rent a house in pesos, the cost will be indexed regularly.

In response to this situation, Argentina has developed a separate rental market for foreigners. As a rule, these are more expensive apartments with furniture and payment in dollars. Usually you can rent one for a short period of time - from three to six months. Then the contract can be extended.

Secondly, there are currency restrictions: you can't just withdraw dollars from an ATM, as the limit is set - no more than $200 per month.

They get out in different ways:

The reason is that there are several dollar exchange rates in Argentina. The most popular are the official rate and the blue rate. According to the official 1 $ = 130 pesos, at the blue rate 1 $ = 316 pesos. But the peso is depreciating at an enormous pace, so at the time of the publication of the article, the numbers will already be different.

Paying with a foreign card in Argentina is unprofitable, since all transactions will be converted at the official rate with an overpayment of two and a half times. Therefore, foreigners use cash. To open a peso account and pay for purchases with a card, you need to apply for a residence permit and receive a precaria - a certificate from the migration service.

We brought $16,000 with us from Turkey. They didn’t want to take more, because our friends weren’t allowed to leave Turkey with more than $10,000 in cash. In order to store a large amount of dollars in Argentina, we plan to rent a safe deposit box in a bank. It’s calmer with her, because different stories are written on the forums.

Thirdly, Buenos Aires is very fond of dogs and landlords are loyal to pets. There are practically no homeless animals here, and domestic animals are well-mannered and non-aggressive.

How everything works. In our house, there is one apartment per floor, so we practically do not intersect with neighbors. But people here are positive and sociable. We are often asked where we are from when they hear us speak. There is no negativity towards Russians here.

“The whole city is one long beach”: how we moved to Argentina with a one-year-old child

Our friend started doing fitness with a trainer, and after after several training sessions, he invited him and us to his birthday party. I think this illustrates well the openness of the Argentines.

Yards are a different story. The city is divided into squares according to the lattice system of urban planning, and the houses are close to each other. Usually it is impossible to go around the house from all sides. Entrances are located from the side of the streets, and courtyards are located inside. You can get there only if you go through the territory of the house.

Each house has its own yard. They make a garden, a pool or a parking lot. Ours has a small pool. I have not seen gardens here, but I have no doubt that they exist. The city itself is very green.

We live in a safe area of Palermo Hollywood with lots of hipster cafes and bars. It has everything you need for life: fitness clubs, banks, theaters, parks, beauty salons, kindergartens and schools. The only thing missing are hospitals. To go to the doctor, you have to go to the center.

Mauritius: Residential Rentals for Expats

Daria P.

moved to Mauritius

Where did they go. I am the test manager for Parallels, an international company. In February, the department in Russia was closed. The company opened a representative office in Mauritius and moved Russian employees there. So, on May 6, together with my husband and son, we moved to the island.

What you were looking for. Housing in the school area so that the school bus picks up and brings the son home. There is a supermarket nearby so you don't have to rent a car. I planned to work from home, in this case the company simply compensates 5000 R per month for electricity.

Looking for housing. For the first time, the company rented housing for employees in a good hotel. For families - for two months, for single colleagues - for a month. During this time, it was necessary to find permanent housing. The company helped some with the search, but I searched myself.

In terms of money, I was guided by the experience of colleagues who had already found housing for themselves, and I expected $ 900 per month. You can rent cheaper, but these will be options away from shops.

“Relocation is not “where”, but “why””: how entrepreneurs move business to other countries

At home, I looked at two sites: propertycloud.mu and lexpressproperty.com. I chose six options and contacted the realtors who rented them out. Something did not fit, because it was far from shops and friends. One house was near the road in a noisy area. The other had a "killed" washer and was missing a dishwasher. I spent one weekend searching.

What the house looks like. As a result, from July 1, I rented a house in the same village where our hotel was. I looked at it and I liked everything. Prior to this, the house was also rented out and was completely ready for the entry of new tenants.

The house is located on the territory of a small residence - closed and guarded around the clock. In addition to ours, there are six more houses. The plot is fenced with a low fence, there is a garden and a small pool. On the ground floor there is a large space: a kitchen combined with a living room, a small toilet and a shower. On the second floor there are three air-conditioned bedrooms and two bathrooms.

/faq-mauritius/

Mauritius: what you need to know before your trip

The house had all the necessary appliances, including a dishwasher and washing machine. As well as furniture - a table, a bar with chairs, two sofas, a TV, internet. Outside there are sun loungers, chairs, a table. Inside the bedrooms there are sliding closets and beds. I had bed linen and dishes, so I had to buy only little things, for example, a normal knife.

But housing also has disadvantages:

On the second floor there are windows in the roof Despite the fact that the fences are low, the neighbors are not visible because of the high greenery
The bedrooms are furnished simply but stylishly One bathroom on the second floor is located directly inside bedroom
There are windows in the roof on the second floor Despite the fact that the fences are low, you can’t see your neighbors because of the high greenery The bedrooms are furnished simply but stylishly One bathroom on the second floor is located right inside the bedroom On the first floor you can work, eat and receive guests It is very spacious and comfortable

Rent and expenses. We pay $900 per month. The landlord also requested a deposit of two months, but I bargained for one and a half. For the services of a realtor, I had to pay half the monthly rent. As a result, I paid the amount equal to three rents - $ 2,700. So that employees could rent housing, the company paid two salaries - it was very helpful.

A communal apartment costs about $110 per month - this includes electricity, water, gas and the Internet. You pay yourself according to the meter at the end of the month.

Agreement and documents. We signed the contract in English. It states that the landlord undertakes to maintain the housing in good condition, for example, change light bulbs, repair if something breaks. And the tenant is to keep everything in order and rent for a year.

/rent-in-limassol/

How I rented an apartment in Limassol, Cyprus for a long term

If we extend the contract, the host has the right to raise the fee by 5%. Some colleagues were asked for a letter of guarantee from the company, I only had a passport and an occupation permit: this is both a work permit and a residence permit that is tied to the employer. That is, if I quit, the permit is automatically revoked.

When we moved in, the realtor and I made an inventory of the things that were in the house: everything, down to towels and spoons.

I have a small garden and a swimming pool. Working with such a view from home is a pleasure

Features of local housing. In Mauritius, there are many residences in closed and protected areas. They are built mainly for expats.

There is no hot water in the usual sense: it is heated by the sun all year round in storage tanks with tubes that are installed on the roofs. There is no heating for the same reason: it never gets cold here.

How everything works. Locals cannot afford to rent such accommodation. Therefore, my neighbors are mostly French. There are quite a lot of them on the island, since Mauritius is a former French colony.

I have not seen separate collection in the country yet. I know that for glass bottles you can get a return fee - about 15% of the cost. We have an ordinary general waste bin on our territory.

A hundred meters from the exit of the residence begins a direct road to the ocean. There are many tourist shops and restaurants on the shore. And 10 minutes from the house there is a large supermarket, McDonald's and a small shopping center.

There are a lot of greenery and flowers on the territory of the residence The supermarket is located 10 minutes from the house

Story No. 3

Armenia: it is difficult to find housing with a good repair

Maria

moved with her family to Yerevan

Where did they go. My husband and I and our three daughters aged 5, 15 and 18 lived in the Moscow region, and in February 2022 we decided to move to Yerevan. My husband is a remote IT specialist in an American company, and I worked as a librarian, and I had to quit.

My husband and his elders moved on March 3, and I moved with my younger one a week later. Our nanny flew in with us to help with the children. We didn't have a plan, but we knew that everything would work out.

Four years ago we tried to live in Tbilisi, but it did not work out with Georgia. Therefore, we decided to go to Armenia, although we had never been here before.

What you were looking for. An apartment with at least three bedrooms and a comfortable space for work and relaxation: kitchen or living room.

Looking for housing. As soon as we arrived in Armenia, we checked into a hostel. They lived in it for about two weeks: in the first week they got used to life in another country, and in the second they were looking for permanent housing. It was the peak, when a lot of people came to the country and housing prices rose a lot.

/armenia/

Life in Armenia

It seemed to me that the country was not ready for such an influx of visitors, so there were few options for rent. Usually, housing is rented here during the summer season, the rest of the time, students live in rented apartments in the capital. In 2022, landlords decided to capitalize on the market: they began to evict students, raise prices by two or three times, and re-let housing to newcomers.

We didn't have expectations about the apartment - we just wanted to find at least something. At first, we looked at options on list.am, but did not find anything suitable. People also search on estate.am, real-estate.am, myrealty.am, realtors.am and Airbnb, but I haven't used them.

As a result, we went to see two apartments. One was handed over from the end of April - it did not suit us in terms of time, and the second was with "grandmother's repair" - there are most of them in Armenia. We looked at a house in the outskirts of the city, but that area was deserted in terms of infrastructure, so I didn’t want to live there.

/sovetskaya-stenka/

“The big Soviet wall adds color”: how apartments with “grandmother’s renovation” are rented out

After several unsuccessful attempts, acquaintances shared the contact of a realtor who helped them. And with her, we succeeded the first time.

What the apartment looks like. We rented a four-room apartment with European-quality renovation 20 minutes from the center in the south of the city in the Malatia-Sebastia region, which is popularly called Bangladesh. Most likely due to the high population density. Our house has nine floors, and around it are panel high-rise buildings. The owners of the apartment moved to the dacha to rent out their housing.

A family with three children lived in the apartment before us, so we didn't have to buy anything. There was all the necessary household appliances: a dishwasher, an air conditioner in the living room, a washing machine.

I like the spacious living room with a large table where we gather with guests and just family. The rooms themselves are not very comfortable and we are a little cramped. But we are glad that we managed to find something for our family.

The water heater still does not work well in the apartment: the water either heats up or not, but these are trifles.

We have many friends in Armenia, so we like to gather in the kitchen. We were lucky to find an apartment with a fresh renovation, as mostly apartments are rented from the old housing stock

Rent and expenses. When we talked to taxi drivers, they said that apartments in this area used to cost no more than $700. We rented for $1400. We pay about $100 for a communal apartment - the owners look at the meters and say how much to pay.

We paid another deposit of one month. The realtor took half the rent for her services - $ 700. In total, I had to pay $3,500 for the first month.

How I moved to Armenia in March 2022

We pay rent once a month in cash. At first they paid in drams - the local currency, now - in dollars.

Agreement and documents. We entered into an official lease agreement for six months. The document is written in Armenian and English. It says that if we leave earlier, the deposit remains with the owners.

Visa-free regime in Armenia – 180 days. And we wanted to stay here longer and legally, so we asked the owners to register us. We heard that registration is needed to apply for visas and residence permits. Registration cost 1000 drams.

As far as I know, it can be done with or without hosts. We came with the landlords to the passport office, and there they put a stamp in our passports. Of the documents, we needed copies and a notarized translation of international passports into Armenian, as well as a translation of birth certificates for everyone who was born under 1980.

Features of local housing. There is no central heating in the city, so boilers are installed in the apartments.

/trip-to-armenia/

What to see in Armenia over the weekend

All the other threes we watched were rented out with double beds in the bedrooms. Perhaps this is due to the fact that people live in the same apartment for several generations. We have daughters, but it is more convenient when there is both a double bed and separate ones.

Apartments are mostly rented furnished, often with leather sofas or armchairs.

The owners of apartments on the first floors like to add an extra room outside - they did the same in ours. Because of this, there are no windows in the two rooms in the middle. This is not very convenient, so the husband is dissatisfied with the apartment.

How everything works. We didn't get to know our neighbors, we just greet them when we see each other on the site. They are friendly and calm people.

In the yard there is a field where children play football, a water fountain and a large playground. The youngest daughter sometimes goes there to swing. As far as I know, there are many playgrounds in our area, but in general this is a rarity in the city.

In the area where we live, there is a large clothing and food market, but we have not been there yet. There are many banks and small shops with children's and adult clothes around, there is a cinema. Near the house there are several supermarkets like Pyaterochka. Nearby are parks with attractions for children where you can take a walk. It's very crowded in the evenings.

/garbage-second-life/

How much time and money does it take to separate garbage collection

Garbage cans in our yard are the most common. Although there is also a separate collection of recyclables somewhere in the city.

The youngest and middle daughters share a nursery, and the eldest lives in a separate room We don't have many cars in the yard, so there are no problems with parking

Serbia: an auction between bidders is held at apartment viewings

Alexey

moved to Serbia

Where did he go. I am a project manager, I have worked in sales companies for the last three years. He lived in Pushkin near Moscow in his own odnushka. In May, they made me an offer to a company in Serbia, I accepted it and flew to Belgrade on May 30.

What I was looking for. Studio, odnushka or evrokvushki in half an hour from work with a basic set of equipment: oven, dishwasher, washing machine.

How I was looking for housing. Before I moved, I looked at websites with rental offers - albatrosnekretnine.com and halooglasi.com - and talked with future colleagues. They warned that due to the number of arrivals in Belgrade, it would be difficult to quickly find accommodation. The real estate market here is small, and it was not ready for such an influx of people. This is due to the fact that Russia and Serbia have good air links: there are direct and connecting flights twice a day.

For the first two weeks, I lived in a rented one-room apartment on Slavia Square — it's close to the city center and 10 minutes walk from work. The company helped to rent an apartment, and it also compensated for the expenses. The apartment was rented by the day - for 10 nights I paid 410 €. The house was old, sometimes cockroaches ran around. But I was able to calmly look for permanent housing and go to screenings.

There were many options on real estate websites - from tiny designer furnished apartments in the very center to spacious two-story houses up to 1000 €. Out of ten options on the site, I selected eight. And by the evening of the same day, all eight options had fallen off: information was not updated on the websites and some of the apartments had already been rented out.

Life in Serbia

In some apartments, the owners arranged a real conveyor of interviews. I arrived at the appointed time and saw other applicants. The landlord started the auction and rented the apartment to the one who was ready to offer a large amount.

I couldn't find housing on open bases myself, so I turned to a realtor. I got the impression that in the midst of the season it is almost impossible to find permanent housing on your own and it takes more time.

Realtors have access to specialized private real estate websites. For their services, they take half the monthly rent - this amount was later compensated to me by the company.

What did you find. As a result, the first time we chose an apartment - a Euro-one apartment with an area of 55 m² with a bedroom and a living room-kitchen. It was clear that the apartment was made for oneself, and not for rent. From the equipment there was a TV, a refrigerator, an oven, a dishwasher, an air conditioner - everything was stale, but working. I was also pleased with the well-furnished balcony with a beautiful view of Belgrade.

The house has seven floors and one entrance, there are four apartments on the site. This is a modern building with a German elevator and underground parking. But the owners of my apartment do not have a parking space.

The feature of Belgrade architecture is that here, as in Petersburg, there are many houses with an internal well. I live in just such a place. The windows of the bathrooms and kitchens overlook the "well". At first, I saw someone else's kitchen through my window, but then the neighbors hung the blinds - and now we don't bother each other.

5 Serbian cities worth visiting

Sometimes something greasy burns in one of the neighbors’ pans, after which an unpleasant smell spreads through the “well”. In such cases, it is necessary to close the window as soon as possible.

I live in a quiet area, not in the center, but close to nature. By bus, I can get ten to fifteen minutes to the historical center and five minutes to work.

Bathroom combined, with a full bath The bedroom is small. There was a sofa, a table, a TV and a closet. I bought only little things for the apartment: linen, pillow, towels, textiles - I spent 5000 R on everything. I also think to change the vacuum cleaner
The living room is combined with the kitchen. There is an exit to the balcony with a view of the city, and inside there is a TV, air conditioning, a dining table, an armchair bed and a sofa At this table I have breakfast and dinner, because there is no place for this in the kitchen
Kitchen equipped with refrigerator, oven, dishwasher

Rent and expenses. I pay 550 € per month. I also paid a deposit of 550 € - it will go towards the last month. I give the money to the landlord personally, because I have not yet opened a card in a local bank.

I pay extra for a communal apartment - about 150 €. The most expensive is central heating, 100 € per month, its cost is spread over the whole year in equal payments. They promise that it will be warm in the apartment in winter. And it's hot in summer, so you have to turn on the air conditioner.

I pay about 20 € more for internet. Now the owner has a 50% discount, and from October I will pay more. By this time, I plan to choose another tariff or change the provider.

Agreement and documents. We signed an agreement with the owner for the police. It is necessary to open a residence permit, which is issued in the municipality. The contract contains standard conditions: it is concluded for a year, the price is fixed for this period. If I do not violate the conditions, then they cannot evict me earlier.

The contract does not state that if I leave early, I will lose the deposit, but it is implied. Since I am on probation until September, we agreed that the owner would return the deposit if it did not grow together with work. But how it will be in fact, I don't know.

Serbia has inconvenient legislation. On the first day of your stay in the country, you need to receive a "white cardboard" - a document stating that you have a place of residence. Everyone who enters the country needs it, and without it, you cannot apply for a residence permit.

Life in Novi Sad, Serbia

Tourists are issued “white cardboard” by hotels. In other cases, the landlord must personally go with the tenant to the police or draw up a document online. But not all locals know how to do this, and some do not want to "shine" in the police. Because of this feature, finding housing is not easy.

I have applied for a residence permit, and I have a special certificate that allows you to stay in the country longer than the allowed 30 days. As soon as I get a residence permit, it will be possible not to make a “white cardboard” every time you enter the country.

Features of local housing. Belgrade is not blown by the wind, so in winter, during the heating season, smog can accumulate in the lower reaches. I knew about it, so I chose an apartment on a hill.

Old houses do not have central heating - they are heated by their own boiler. The boiler room works only in winter. And for hot water, a boiler is installed in each apartment.

Friends said that in some areas the electricity is periodically turned off, so you can be left without hot water for several hours. But, as I understand it, people are ready for this, especially since it happens rarely: several times a year.

How everything works. I have not yet communicated with my neighbors and have not seen them. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we live in different rhythms. But as far as I know, good neighborliness is accepted in Serbia.

On the next line from my house, private or small apartment houses with small gardens begin. When I walk there, I see how people are sitting on the territory adjacent to the house and drinking tea. It looks like our resort towns.

How we went to the Balkans during the pandemic

I take out the garbage in a container near the house. They take him out every night. I saw separate collection only in the center. The sorting bins had clear infographics and inscriptions in Serbian and English.

In my area there are many small shops with plumbing and household chemicals - they are in every house on the ground floor. There are two small chain stores within walking distance. Auchan, Decathlon and Ikea are located on the outskirts of the city, you have to get to them by car. There are no large shops inside the city.

Three minutes from the house there is a small forest park with well-groomed paths, many joggers, families with children and dogs. There is also a large sports complex with indoor and outdoor pools. I am planning to go there.
