Are Vanity Lights the Only Type of Bathroom Light?

No—they are just one element of layered bathroom lighting! They are considered task lights, because they illuminate the mirror for grooming. Ambient lighting in bathrooms can come from bathroom ceiling lights or hanging lights such as a bathroom chandelier. In some bathrooms, vanity fixtures may be designed to also function as decorative lights, with an avant-garde fixture design or a beautiful, exposed vanity light bulb.

How Many Vanity Light Bulbs Do I Need?

The number of light bulbs needed in your fixture will depend on the size of the vanity mirror and the overall bathroom light lumens needed in your space. As a rule of thumb, we recommend at least 70 lumens per square foot in a bathroom. The most traditional placement for a vanity light fixture is hanging horizontally above the vanity mirror. To create the perfect makeup, in addition to quality products, you also need uniform, strong and unshaded lighting for the dressing table. In this article, we tell you how to choose lamps for your dressing table so that it can be used in personal care and beauty.

Dressing table daylight

Naturally, this is the best option, so make the most of the effect of daylight by placing your dressing table near a window. Placement of furniture "back" will allow natural light to evenly illuminate the face and neck. An equally successful solution is to install a dressing table "facing" to the window so that the light reflects off the mirror and then falls on your face.

Due to the limited amount of space, however, not every room allows the free placement of a dressing table. Sometimes using the space around the window is not possible and the vanity needs to be placed in a darker area. In addition, even with the right position by the window, you often have to use the artificial lighting of the dressing table. Indeed, in winter, when the morning resembles a dark night, morning makeup has to be applied with the help of artificial light.

The choice and installation of artificial lighting for the dressing table depends on the nature of the furniture - whether it is a complete piece of furniture with a mirror or a table with a larger or smaller mirror standing alone. When planning your lighting, it's also important to keep electrical outlets organized.

How do you plan your vanity lighting?

  1. Dressing table lighting is usually planned in the same way as bathroom mirror lighting. In both cases, two lamps on either side of the mirror, positioned at the height of the person using the mirror, work well. Dressing table with lamps is usually used while sitting, so the optimal height for lamps is 110-120 cm from the floor.
  2. If you will be applying makeup while standing, the vanity light should be positioned about 160 cm from the floor. The distance between the lamps should be about 75 cm - this will give a uniform distribution of light fluxes, eliminate shadows and refractions. Wall lamps, pendant lamps, floor lamps or stylish linear lamps can be placed on the sides of the mirror.
  3. A lamp located just above the mirror is also a good solution - it will even be needed if the distance between the vanity sconces located on both sides of the mirror exceeds 100 cm. However, it should be chosen so that the light does not dazzle a person. First of all, you should choose lampshades made of milky glass or plastic or frames with lampshades in bright colors. Track lights or a long fluorescent tube will also do the trick. If it is not possible to place lamps around a mirror, spotlights mounted on the ceiling will also work. The best solution would be to buy dressing table lamps with the ability to adjust the direction of the light flux - it is best to position them so that the light reflected from the mirror falls on your face.
  4. When planning lighting, we recommend taking into account not only the location of the respective lamps, but also the type of lighting. The light color should be closest to 5000-6500K and the Ra color rendering index should be at least 80 percent. The information provided should be found on the packaging of the fixtures. It is worth knowing that the higher the color rendering index, the better the colors will be displayed, and therefore all the details during the makeup will be well lit.

The right choice for style

Manufacturers offer many types of lamps that can be used as vanity lighting. It is worth knowing that also some furniture is already equipped with both a mirror and lighting. However, in the case of a dressing table without lighting, or even a mirror, you might consider buying a mirror with built-in lighting, such as in the form of LED lamps. Such a mirror can simply be placed on the dressing table or hung on the wall above the furniture. Of course, you can choose a regular mirror and plan lighting points above or around it. With furniture placed in a modern room or bedroom, minimalistic glass and metal wall lights will look good.
