10 ways to add character |

(Image credit: Future / Carpetright / Future)

Choosing wood floor ideas for a bedroom is an exciting part of a room design as there's a huge array of practical and stylish options available to stamp personality on your space.

Hardwearing, durable and available in a host of grains and colors, wood makes a great flooring idea for any room in the house. Bound with the beauty of nature it's a particularly good choice for restful spaces such as bedrooms and makes a timeless foundation for both traditional and contemporary homes.

From solid hardwood and engineered planks, to wood effect solutions, there's a wealth of options to choose from, so to help you decide we've rounded a selection of inspiring wood flooring ideas perfect for bedrooms along with some handy tips from the experts.

Wood floor ideas for a bedroom

Deciding on wood floor ideas for a bedroom takes careful consideration as what type is best for your space will spend on a huge array of factors, from the size of the room to the look you want to create. Bedroom flooring is also a big investment which is not easy to change once installed, so it's important that the style you choose has enduring appeal.

One of the key decisions to make when it comes to wood floor ideas for a bedroom is what type to choose. Luxurious and long-lasting, solid hardwood offers unrivalled character and timeless charm plus can wear beautifully with age.

Capturing the look of solid wood, but with the ability to be used over underfloor heating, engineered wood is a popular option for bedrooms where comfort is key. Alternatively, wood effect options such as luxury vinyl tile are perfect for bringing the character of wood without the maintenance needs.

1. Choose pale wood for an warm, bright feel

Bedrooms are private spaces where we relax and unwind, so it's important that calm prevails. Opting for a pale timber with a gentle grain as part of a neutral bedroom scheme is guaranteed to create a restorative, restful feel.

If you love light colored woods then the bedroom can be a great place to showcase them explains Amina Kamara, Chelsea showroom manager at Havwoods .

'In general, lighter colored floors will require more upkeep than darker or more varied colors in a higher traffic area, so a lighter floor is suitable for a bedroom, whereas a living room or dining area would be better suited to a dark color palette.'

2. Choose wide planks for a simple look

When choosing wood floor ideas for a bedroom one of the key decisions to make is whether you want a traditional plank style format or a patterned design. For those looking to create a simple bedroom then choose straight-laid planks for a clean, streamlined look.

'An oak plank floor with few knots and grain structure variations will give a uniform, architectural look whereas a two-strip (two staves of wood per floorboard) will give much more variation and expression,' suggests Richard Aylen, technical manager at Junckers,

If opting for a plank design it's also important to consider the width of the planks as this can impact the look and feel of the space. 'Wide board plank floors will give a more uniform look, especially if you choose a Classic grade with very few color and grain pattern variations,' he adds.

3. Add texture with decorative grain

If you're looking to add texture to a bedroom then consider a wood with plenty of grain variation and knotting as well as designs make up of thinner planks. Wood flooring with highly decorative grains are a brilliant foundation for rustic bedrooms which are characterized by their abundance of natural materials.

Some wood flooring companies grade their timbers by how textured they are to make it easier to for consumers to decide. How varied the grain of the timber is depends on what part of the tree it is from, explains Richard Aylen at Junckers.  'We have three grades, Classic, Harmony and Variation. The Classic grade is made from the innermost part of the tree, where there is less variation in pattern and color; Variation is made from the outer part of the tree which has more changes and differences; Harmony in the middle. All the colorations and grain patterns occur naturally in the timber and its personal choice as to which one you go for.'

4. Bring warmth to monochrome schemes

Laying a wood floor is a beautiful way to bring warmth and texture to black and white bedrooms as demonstrated in this sophisticated space. While decorating with black and white is timeless and elegant, it can cause spaces to feel stark and lifeless, but a wood floor in a rich chestnut brown will be the perfect antidote.

5. Add pattern with herringbone parquet

Suitable for both contemporary and traditional bedrooms, herringbone wood flooring is a fabulous way to bring a touch of pattern and a timeless feel to interiors.

'In the past decade, the herringbone pattern has become extremely popular, showing no signs of abating. It’s an elegant flooring choice and the play between the strict geometric forms and the natural pattern of the wood is hard to beat,' says Richard Aylen at Junckers.

With its soft, honeyed coloring this oak parquet brings beautiful warmth and texture to this blue bedroom.

6. Zone spaces with different laying patterns

When deciding on wood floor ideas for a bedroom it's a good idea to think about the spaces that connect to it, too, such as en suites and walk-in closets. Using the same tone of wood throughout is a great way to unify these spaces and creative visual harmony.

In this apartment by Kasha Paris , both the bedroom and closet feature the same warm-toned wood, but the two areas have been subtly defined using a mix of straight-laid and herringbone designs.

7. Choose a dark wood for an atmospheric look

Dark colors can be well suited to bedrooms, helping to create a cocooning and intimate feel. To prevent dark bedroom ideas feeling too austere try adding a wood floor which is rich in texture with deep, warm coloring such as these Burmese wood planks from Ted Todd.

8. Warm up the space with a rug

Wood flooring can leave bedrooms feeling cold underfoot, but adding a deep pile bedroom rug will instantly bring a layering of warmth and softness for a cozy feel, plus they can help muffle sound too, helping to create a relaxing environment conducive to sleep. This Berber style design is the perfect finishing touch to a bohemian bedroom scheme.

9. Maximize light with a white wood floor

Helping to reflect light, painting a wood floor white is an easy way to instantly brighten up a small bedroom but also makes a beautiful foundation for a coastal bedroom scheme.

If painting a wood floor, 'it is essential to use a specially formulated floor paint that will be durable and hardwearing,' says Ruth Mottershead of Little Greene. 'For soft woods, knots should be sealed with a wood primer to prevent staining.'

10. Create a feature floor

(Image credit: Paint & Paper Library/Isabelle Lomas)

Painting the floor is an easy way to create a playful feature in a kids' room. You could try painting each plank in different color, or try a checked pattern to give a nod to a circus theme.

Is wooden flooring good for a bedroom?

Wooden flooring is a good choice for a bedroom as it is both stylish and practical. As well as being hardwearing and durable, wood comes in a huge array of colors, grains and finishes and can make a timeless foundation for both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Being a natural material is also a benefit, explains Robert Walsh, founder and owner, Ted Todd Floors. 'When it comes to the bedroom, wood floors work beautifully as they are one of the most traditional and natural types of flooring. Bringing in a touch of nature and the great outdoors, they can really help to transform your bedroom into a calming and relaxing escape.'

'It’s important to make sure your subfloor is in good condition. It should be flat to within 3mm in a 2m radius, structurally sound, free of squeaks and free of protruding fasteners,' adds Robert Walsh.

Which wooden flooring is best for bedroom?

Which wooden flooring is best for a bedroom is dependant on many factors, from the size of the room to whether you want to create a contemporary or traditional look.

Luckily, wood flooring comes in a host of designs and can be laid in a wide array of patterns, offering scope to create myriad different looks and styles, from sleek and modern straight-laid designs to decorative parquet designs. 'You can make a real statement with a herringbone or chevron design or allow the floor to blend seamlessly with your existing décor with a plank format,' explains Robert Walsh.

Luxurious and authentic, high quality solid hardwood options can last for generations. When it comes to species, 'oak, ash, beech and maple are all hardwood timber species, very hard-wearing and ideal for use as flooring,' says 'When made in hardwood through and through, a wood floor can be sanded and refinished several times to good-as-new condition, or to add a new colour or surface treatment to give it a completely new look says Richard Aylen, Junckers’ technical manager.

Equally sturdy and durable and offering the look of solid timber, engineered wood can be fitted over underfloor heating which can often give it the edge when it comes to creating a cozy bedroom environment.

Thanks for visiting our primary bedrooms with hardwood floors photo gallery where you can search a lot of primary bedrooms with hardwood design ideas.

This is our primary bedroom with hardwood floors design gallery where you can browse photos below. We hope you find your inspiration here. We add new designs every week.

1. Light Gray Primary with Hardwood Flooring and a View

This simple but beautiful primary bedroom is part of a home designed by Chango & Co. The medium hardwood floor is not as polished as some floors are which gives it a bit of a fashionable distressed look. That texture goes well with the otherwise crisp white (ceiling), light gray (walls) and beige (sitting bench and area rug) color scheme. The choice for nightstands is very good in that it blends well with the floor.

2. Rich Dark Wood Floor, Gray Walls and Fabulous Fireplace

This Lindsay Vonn’s new home which features a spacious primary bedroom with highly polished dark wood flooring. Notice the angled fireplace which is the nicest feature of this bedroom including the fact it has matching wood paneling on the upper facade.

3.

Light Wood Flooring with Upper Windows and Concealed Walk-Through Closet

Large primary bedroom with light wood floor and shag area rug. I love the screen style wall that separates the main bedroom from the small walk-in closet. I also like the upper windows which emits plenty of light while preserving privacy. FYI, this is the primary bedroom in Kristen Wiig’s home.

4. Bedroom with Living Room and Patio

Kris Jenner’s home is stunning and that includes this bedroom which is simply decorated, but is beautiful with the dark, rustic floor boards, plain area rug that matches the earth tones of the sofa and armchairs. Interestingly, a stand-out feature in this room is the double glass doors with a light green tint opening up to the balcony.

5. Transitional Primary with Fireplace Wall

This transitional primary bedroom is one of my all-time favorite designs. I love the dark wood, size and of course the fireplace wall that separates the sleeping area from the sitting area. Notice too, the stunning cathedral all-white ceiling with the white beams. The designer of this room did a magnificent job. The photo is also top-notch (by Canamould Extrusions Inc).

6. Elegant Space with Balcony and Chandelier

Get a load of this beautiful, elegant bedroom space with polished dark wood flooring, slightly distressed nightstand dresser, white tufted dressing bench and white double doors to a  balcony. Notice the cove ceiling with chandelier as well… which enhances this space (imagine it with a regular 8 foot flat ceiling… wouldn’t be the same).

7. Small Primary Bedroom with Wood Floor

Small can still be beautiful. Check out the small primary bedroom with dark wood flooring above. It’s beautiful, with the blue and white bedding, teal walls with white trim, dark wood nightstands with lamps and beige area rug. Plenty of attention-to-detail went into the small space.

Most Popular Bedroom Flooring (Statistics)

Surprisingly, hardwood is the most popular flooring option for primary bedrooms. Not by much though.

49.42% of primary bedrooms have hardwood floor. We set out all the bedroom floor data below the photo gallery.

Not surprisingly, medium shade hardwood is the most popular shade for primary bedrooms. Medium shade hardwood is used in 42.18% of primary bedrooms that has hardwood.

Carpet flooring tops out at 41% of the 165,175 rooms surveyed, but combined, dark, medium, and light hardwood floors supersede it in popularity, equaling about 50% of all rooms (see chart below). Other options that room owners have chosen from include concrete, coming in at fourth with 1.7% of rooms, followed by tile, laminate, vinyl, and even options like brick and cork.

Below we feature our massive and growing photo gallery of primary bedrooms with hardwood floor. You’ll see wood floor of all species as well as bedrooms of all styles. Interestingly, many designs have area rugs too (see our rug buying guide as well as types of area rugs article).

While carpeted flooring in the primary bedroom was once considered chic and new, nowadays homeowners are making a dramatic shift toward the rich tones and clean accessibility of hardwood floors. Ranging from a dark, medium, to light tones and kinds of wood, this versatile flooring material can upgrade a room from simple to fabulous with just one element.

Hardwood Floor Functionality

Making the change to hardwood is exciting, but more than just the initial functionality—it is easy to clean and maintain, unlike carpets which easily stain and get old with time. Designs for primary bedrooms with hardwood floors are in an entirely new category, and so the possibilities for a new look and style are limitless.

The wood floors can add both value and beauty to your bedroom, and beyond that, it can be installed in the entire primary bedroom suite, such as the bedroom, bathroom, and closet, for a tight, cohesive look. This can anchor your home together while allowing for versatility in decoration and colors for each room.

Hardwood Materials From Which to Choose

There are a variety of wood floors available, such as birch, cherry, maple, walnut, and of course, oak. Material options range from classic oak planks to modern looks achieved with bamboo or even eucalyptus, which are ideally durable, affordable, and sustainable.

Luxurious homeowners can opt for rare resources, such as Brazilian Koa wood, which is pricey but also incredibly durable and richly beautiful. Another name of koa wood is the exotic “tiger wood”, and its price comes from its strength, harder than oak planks, and the rich color somewhere between Auburn and dark brown.

Design Options with Hardwood

When you choose a dark, coffee-colored hardwood, you can create a dramatic effect in your bedroom when you contrast it with creamy linens and beige walls, making your room peaceful and beautiful. Or, dark hardwood floors can be paired with other rich fabrics and a large, open window letting in natural light so the room stays bright.

If you are renovating an old attic or small space into a primary bedroom, a hardwood floor gives it an instant sense of sophistication and comfort. No matter what your bedroom plans are, a primary bedroom with hardwood flooring is sophisticated and elevated.

90,000 bedroom design in a wooden house

painted in deep blue wood, brick, brick at the head, a canopy bed and tapestries on the walls: the design of a bedroom in a wooden house can be arranged in a variety of ways. Which ones, we will tell in this post.

Design: Tatyana Ilyina (Sorokina)

How do bedrooms in such houses differ from bedrooms in city apartments?

Firstly, the private areas of wooden houses usually have a ceiling bevel, which determines the location of the bed and other interior items , so the options for arranging furniture are limited, and the furniture will not fit any size. First of all, caution in choosing furniture concerns the design of the attic bedroom of a wooden house.

Design: Olga Vologdina

Design: Lavka Design

Design: Zhenya Zhdanova

Secondly, the choice of finishing materials for wood walls and ceilings is not as wide as for ordinary rooms.

Design: Anna Lazareva

Thirdly, not every interior style will suit such rooms. For example, art deco, “heavy” classics and high-tech do not get along well with wood, but styles that involve natural shades of the palette and slight negligence of furniture and decoration will be fully revealed. nine0003

How to decorate the walls and ceiling in the interior of a bedroom in a wooden house: 7 ways

Picked up options from the simplest and background to complex, unusual.

1. Shade or paint the walls and ceiling in the same color

When you don't want wood to be the soloist in the environment, but the furniture and decor are planned as accent and self-sufficient.

Design: Masha Kunyakina

Design: Vladimir Shorokhov

2. Paint the walls in the active color and leave the ceiling “clean”

The combination of eye-catching walls and a neutral ceiling is perfect for bright, decorative bedrooms. The ceiling in such an interior is for resting the eyes.

Design: Natalia Lomeiko, Tatiana Trofimova

3. Combine several types of wood

Most often, designers resort to this technique when decorating calm, monochrome sleeping areas, taking as a basis one color and its many shades. Timber combined with lining, and log masonry with wood panels will add rhythm to the interior and will not let you get bored among similar colors. nine0003

Design: ADesign

Design: Anna Lazareva

4. Include wallpaper in the design

For example, cover one wall at the head with it, after leveling it with drywall. You should not take something contrasting with the main tone of the wood: let the design of the wallpaper echo the given palette and complement it as a companion.
If the interior of a bedroom in a wooden house in the attic is being designed, and the bed is just under the bevel of the ceiling, it would be a good idea to wallpaper this area: looking at something while lying on the bed is always a pleasure. nine0003

5.

Complement with tapestries

Ordinary paintings can be used instead, but hand-woven fabric with complex ornaments or an interesting plot will benefit from atmosphere.

Design: Alena Polevaya

nine0003

6. Dilute with brickwork

This technique is good in modernist homes: it will help to remove associations with an abundance of wood as with something rustic, provincial.

Design: Flatforfox

7. Paint

As with wallpaper, the painting should not contrast sharply with the background. Its task is to emphasize the natural tone of wood, organically complement its texture.

nine0003

Design: Natalia Lomeiko, Tatiana Trofimova

How not to?

Do not cover wood with clear varnish. Over time, such a tree will darken ugly and turn red, and will resemble a dark bath room.

What to do with the floor?

Lay impregnated natural board, good laminate, solid board or parquet in the color of the walls or a tone or two darker.

But it is better to refuse porcelain stoneware imitating wood: next to the natural cut pattern, natural surface texture with bends, knots and cracks, fake will look artificial - even the highest quality. nine0003

Design: Bakharev & Partners Bureau

Design: Lavka design

Design: Alexey Dunaev

How to arrange lighting?

Hidden electrical wiring in such rooms is an infrequent solution, usually found in the design of a bedroom in a wooden house made of timber. However, the point is not only in technical features: a chandelier in the middle of the room + a pair of sconces, lamps on bedside tables and a floor lamp or any other floor lamp looks more atmospheric and decorative. nine0003
