Wireless remote door bell

Wireless Doorbell Extender | Door Chime Extender

Do you have a wired doorbell you simply cannot hear in other rooms of your home? Or maybe your hearing has diminished and you are having problems hearing your door chime or door bell in other parts of your home. A doorbell extender or wireless doorbell extender will solve this problem for you.

Sometimes referred to as a wired doorbell extender, they extend the listening range of your EXISTING wired chime or wired doorbell, or other traditional doorbells through the use of a wireless door chime extender, transmitter, that will communicate with battery operated doorbells or plugin door chimes you place throughout your home or office.

This almost creates a doorbell remote by adding wireless door chime extenders in other rooms in your home by using wireless doorbell ringers, both plugin and battery operated versions, in other rooms of your home.

Which Door Chime Extender Do I Choose?

With different wireless doorbell extenders and door chime relay extenders to choose from, which one is best for me? Virtually all the models below operated the same way. The range or the chime extender, the type of receiver (plugin or battery), along with some other features such as chime volume control, flashing strobe light, and expandability are the main differences.

What Are Doorbell Extenders or “Extend-A-Chime”

From a functionality perspective, these products have the same objective in mind–that’s to add wireless capability to your existing wired doorbell. The primary differences between all of these products come down to three main issues. The main feature of extenders:

Which of these products would you recommend?

Directly wiring into your existing doorbell transform is the most reliable, therefore, the LRA-EX1000 doorbell extender is our recommendation.  There are other versions on the market that “listen” for doorbell sounds.  The wired-in method is better because it does not have to “listen” and there won’t be any false alarms.

Never miss a delivery or visitor because you can’t hear your Doorbell.

Do you have problems hearing your door chime ring?  Have you ever been out on the back porch waiting on your friends to arrive but never hear the “ding-dong” sound from your current system? What about that cable installer who claims they rang the front bell but you did not hear it, because you were in the back bedroom? An extender connects your existing wired doorbell system with a wireless door chime receiver. When someone pushes the button at your front door, your existing chime unit, with the help of an extender, generates a wireless signal to make a wireless receiver chime that is plugged into a standard outlet. Many people feel like they are stuck with the unit currently installed in their home. Often it isn’t economically feasible to run new wires to install a product, or you may have a beautiful system that you just don’t want to part with. Perhaps your current chime just isn’t loud enough.   Whatever your problem is, the wireless extender is the solution!

Benefits of Chime Extenders

If you have a wired system in your home and find there are certain areas in your home where you cannot hear it, the LRA-EX1000 is the solution to your problem! The “Extend-A-Chime” is a unique system that works when a small wireless device hooked into your existing unit sends a wireless signal to a wireless receiver.   This is an easy-to-install product that is truly a do-it-yourself job. When you purchase the extend-a-chime, it will come with two components; a transmitter LRA-EXTX, and a wireless receiver, usually the LRA-DCRX.  Simply take the LRA-EXTX and connect it to the existing wired doorbell.  Now, when someone presses your push button, this transmitter will send a wireless signal to the receiver, causing it to chime alongside your existing doorbell.

Do you never hear visitors at the front door when you are upstairs or in the basement?

Purchase an extend-a-chime set and an additional receiver and you can now hear the doorbell ring in the basement AND the upstairs bedroom.  How many times have you been on your back porch cooking on the grill or at the pool and worried you will miss your guests at the front door?

The eufy Smart Wi-Fi Dual Cam Video Doorbell is our top pick for the best wireless doorbell, with its double camera allowing you to see more of your doorway and a 2K resolution ensuring that the view is crystal clear. The device scored top marks following our tests, and we loved it for its performance and eye for design.

The only drawback is the additional Homebase, which acts as a chime and will need to be placed within a short distance from your WiFi router. Otherwise, the eufy Dual Cam is incredibly versatile, with local storage and no subscription required to access your video. There is also delivery guard for when you're not home and facial recognition for regular visitors.

The newest option in Ring's now-expansive range of smart doorbells, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 can be used wirelessly or hardwired and features the pre-roll feature that is missing from older models. This means you can get a better view of any triggered events, with the doorbell also recording the seconds immediately before.

The same niggles we have with other Ring doorbells still exist here, such as the fact that a chime (outside of the app on your phone) must be bought separately, but we would recommend the Doorbell 4 for those looking to make their first foray into the world of Ring doorbells.

For years Google's offering in the smart doorbell arena consisted of the wired Nest Hello, but now Nest users have the Google Nest Doorbell Battery - a sleek and cutting-edge video doorbell that doesn't require any hardwiring.   The most striking thing about the Nest Doorbell is how slim and high-end it looks.

Aside from looks, the Google Nest Doorbell Battery also impressed us with its facial recognition, package protection, and customizable motion zones, as well as how seamlessly it worked with other Nest products. The wire-free element also means you can mount it pretty much anywhere you want, from the garden gate to the back door.

Despite it being one of the most affordable wireless doorbells on this list, the TOUCAN TVD200WUC Wireless Video Doorbell was equally as impressive to us as its more well-known rivals when we tested it. Not only does Toucan offer more flexibility with compatibility with both Alexa and Google smart assistants, but it also comes with its own wireless chime.

There's also a built-in siren for greater security, and you can access 24-hours of video without a subscription. There is an extra fee to pay if you want to go further back, however. The app interface is also a little disappointing, but this unassuming doorbell makes up for it in other areas.

If you want a more affordable Ring doorbell and one that doesn’t scrimp on the connected features of the more enhanced models, the standard Ring Video Doorbell (here, we’re specifically speaking about the 2020 model) remains a great option. Like its pricier brethren, it offers 1080p video capture, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Android and iOS app support.

The main drawback for this cheaper model sits with its battery, however. While it can optionally be wired into a wall to the mains, its wireless nature relies on its internal battery. Unlike other Ring products, it can’t be removed and replaced with a backup battery, meaning that between every 6 to 12 months, you’re going to have to remove the whole doorbell and bring it inside for a charge.

The best feature of the Arlo Essential is the ability to leave and take messages. So useful for when you're not going to be home (or when you've got your heart set on a long weekend bath), you can leave a quick voice note for any visitors or delivery people to tell them where to leave a package.

Arlo has also built a siren into the doorbell, which it boasts over the ranges from Ring or Google. How we test the best wireless doorbells

The products chosen for this guide have all been tested by our writers and editors, all with decades of experience between them. Unless otherwise stated, all of the products recommended by us have been independently reviewed in real-home environments to ensure that our readers are getting the most honest, relevant information possible. Where possible, links to more in-depth reviews are also provided, so you can read more about what we thought during the testing process.

The best wireless doorbells are chosen based on various criteria, including their affordability, video quality, ease of setup and use, app performance, compatibility with wider smart home systems, and more.

How to choose the best wireless doorbell for your home

Will my wireless doorbell work with Alexa/Google Home?

Compatibility with your smart home hub will depend on the wireless doorbell you buy, but, generally speaking, Ring doorbells will always work with Amazon Alexa smart speakers and displays. The same goes for Ring Alarms and other security products, as they all come under the same banner.

Similarly, Nest products come from Google and so will work well with a Google-branded doorbell. Anything else will vary, so it's important to check before buying.

Once set up, we absolutely love how some of the best wireless doorbells work with smart displays such as the Echo Show or Nest Hub, allowing you to see what's going on outside from the comfort of your kitchen or bedroom. For more on this, take a look at our guide to the best smart speakers.

Are video doorbells safe?

Many are concerned - and for a good reason - about the security implications of essentially strapping a surveillance device to the front of your home, but there are many protections in place preventing things from getting dystopian.

We would recommend going for a well-known brand so as not to fall foul of a device that's more vulnerable to hackers, set a strong password when signing up, always download software updates when they are released, and make sure all settings are correct for your needs.

All this said smart doorbells could actually form an essential part of a home security system, adding an affordable camera that can detect motion and send alerts directly to your device when something untoward is going on.

Are wireless doorbells worth it?

Whether you opt for a chime-only doorbell or a smart video doorbell that doubles as a security device, you may be wondering whether investing in a wireless doorbell is actually worth it? After all, a traditional ringer has served you well up to this point.

Wireless doorbells offer convenience, first and foremost, allowing you to place your device pretty much anywhere (as long as it's within the vicinity of your Wi-Fi signal or indoor chime). This, combined with the smarts of modern releases from the likes of Google and Ring, makes the best wireless doorbells an affordable way to incorporate your front door into a wider smart home system.

    Functions and operation of the wireless doorbell

    The wireless doorbell improves the comfort of home occupants and visitors. This device has replaced wired models and, in addition to the main task - notification of the arrival of guests - can be equipped with other functions:

    How it works

    Although the internal structure of the wireless bell is different from the usual one, the principle of operation is the same. From the button, the signal goes to the receiver, which notifies the arrival of the guest with a loud sound or melody. The only difference is that for wired models, the call is transmitted via cable, while for wireless models, via radio.

    The wireless bell device is quite simple:

    This device allows you to install the bell and button in convenient places, since they are powered by a battery or battery and do not require a network connection. Some models of wireless devices may have a combined power principle. In this case, the button is powered by batteries, and the main unit is powered by the mains. nine0007

    Remember that the range of a wireless call in reality may be less than indicated in its passport, since the signal is partially jammed by concrete or brick walls, metal doors and other structures.

    Video: what is a wireless bell

    Types of wireless bells and their features

    A fairly large range of wireless bells is presented on the modern construction market. To choose them correctly, you need to familiarize yourself with the existing offer and the features of different models. nine0007

    First of all, such calls differ in range. It is necessary to consider where you will install such a device: on the doors of the apartment or on the gate of a private house. Wireless bells can be:

    Wireless bell components can be powered by:

    Wireless bell kit can be composed of:

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Most people prefer wireless doorbell models because of their obvious advantages:

    • no wires - they do not need to be hidden and they will not spoil the design of the rooms;
    • non-volatile - such devices operate on batteries or accumulators and do not require connection to the network;
    • easy installation - even a beginner can do it;
    • different configurations - the possibility of simultaneous operation of several buttons and speakers in the same network increases the comfort of using the call;
    • ease of dismantling - it is very easy to move the speaker or button to a more convenient place; nine0084
    • beautiful appearance - modern models differ in both color and body shape, so you can choose a bell for any room design.

    This is not to say that a wireless bell is an ideal solution. Like any other device, it also has some drawbacks, which are most often found in cheap models:

    • low-quality mount. Most often this applies to devices mounted on Velcro. After some time, such a fastening may weaken, as a result of which the bell falls and is damaged; nine0084
    • the need to replace batteries or accumulators. It is necessary to periodically monitor the degree of charge and change the batteries, otherwise the call will stop working;
    • leaky version. Under the action of moisture, the elements of an unprotected button are damaged and it fails;
    • Possibility of loss of communication. When the power of the batteries is weak or there are obstacles in the signal path, the signal may not reach the receiver.

    Most of the described shortcomings in quality models of wireless calls are absent. nine0055

    Things to pay attention to when choosing

    To choose the right wireless bell, you need to decide on the location of its installation, and then analyze the following features:

    Difference between outdoor and apartment models indoors or outdoors.

    Obviously, street models can be installed in an apartment, but they will cost more because of their greater functionality.

    1. A feature of apartment bells is a simpler device, since they do not require additional protection from external negative factors. The range of such models is usually from 3 to 10 meters, while street calls can work at a distance of up to 80-100 meters.
    2. Call buttons, which are installed on the gate at the entrance to the house, must have good protection against moisture, otherwise they will stop working at the first rainfall. When choosing such models, it is imperative to look at the level of their moisture protection, it must be at least IP44. For additional protection of outdoor models, manufacturers produce protective visors. If necessary, such a visor can be made independently. In addition, outdoor models must tolerate both high and low temperatures, as well as its differences. To protect against vandals, their body is made more durable and reliable. nine0368

      To protect the street bell buttons from bad weather and barbarians, they are produced in waterproof vandal-proof cases and are equipped with special visors

    Installing the wireless doorbell

    Most wireless doorbells have both button and speaker battery powered. In this case, the installation of the device is quick and easy. First you need to purchase the necessary tools and accessories:

    Installation must be carried out in the following order:

    1. Inspection of the bell and checking its configuration. Check the presence of fasteners, these can be self-tapping screws or Velcro.
    2. Selection of mounting location. Determined with the installation locations of the button and speaker. It is more reliable to mount the button using self-tapping screws, since the Velcro weakens over time and the button may fall off. For the button, choose a place next to the door or directly on the door leaf.

      Poor-quality adhesive tape weakens after a while and the button may fall off

    3. Button mounting. Holes are made on the wall for dowels. You can cut the base from the chipboard, which is fixed in the selected location. A button is fixed to it with the help of self-tapping screws.

      It is more reliable to fix the button on self-tapping screws

    4. Mounting the receiver with speaker. The indoor unit is installed in such a place that it can be heard from all necessary places. It is not necessary to hang it on the wall, you can put it, for example, on a bedside table.

      Receiver can be hung on a wall or placed on a bedside table

    5. Verify that the call is working. Insert batteries into the button and the main unit and check the operation of the wireless call.

      After installation and installation of batteries, the functionality of the bell is checked

    If the main unit of the wireless bell is powered by the mains, then you need to have electrical skills to connect it.

    Video: Solving a problem when installing a button

    Wireless bell repair

    Although high-quality wireless calls are quite reliable devices, sometimes there are situations when they fail.

    The main causes of breakdowns:

    Another common cause is the failure of the frequency of the transmitter and receiver. In this case, it is necessary to adjust it:

    Owners of cheap Chinese devices often complain about spontaneous ringing. This is due to the fact that the frequency of their call coincides with the frequency of the call of neighbors. You can solve this problem like this:
