Tips and Advice for Buying A Sofa

Find the Right Type of Sofa for Your Home

A new couch is one of the most exciting pieces of furniture to buy, but it can also be a stressful experience. So stressful that trying to buy a new couch led to Darryl Sharpton and his wife, Jessica, to found their own sofa brand, Albany Park.

Now you don't have to go as far as the Sharpton's and build your own brand to find the perfect couch. But as a starting point, it can really help to narrow down your search and decide on the type of couch you'd like to buy.

Here's a quick breakdown of some of the most popular couch types:

Sectional Sofas

A sectional is made up of at least two pieces (or sections) that combine to create L or U shaped sofas.

The Park Sectional by Albany Park

"They are extremely popular right now mostly because of their versatility and configuration options," Allison Thibault, principal designer at Kaleidoscope Design Studio told Living Cozy. "They also come in a wide variety of upholstery and price ranges, making them appealing to most buyers."

Deep Seated Sofas

Sometimes you just want a bit more space to put your feet up and relax, and that's exactly what deep seated couches were designed for. The average seat depth is around 28-32" and anything over 34" is considered deep-seated.

The Lemieux et Cie Renan Sofa has 41" deep seats

“Sofas with shallow seats are best for those that prefer to sit upright. Deeper seated sofas are better for when you want to lounge out or curl up,” says Andra DelMonico, a home design expert from Next Luxury. Since most of us prefer to lounge while binging our favorite show, deep-seated sofas are growing in popularity.”

Loveseats

A loveseat is simply a small sofa designed to seat two people, and it's the perfect type of sofa for small spaces and couples. Many loveseats will also come with neat features from reclining options to pull out beds and even built in end tables.

The Burrow Range 3-Piece Sectional Lounger

"We love to place loveseats in small living spaces," says Kendall Severson owner of Interior Design Partnership. "Velvet loveseats and settees look incredibly sophisticated in a rich velvet fabric or a bold pattern," she adds.

Sleeper

Sleepers are couches that double up as beds. Sometimes they will include a fold out mattress whereas other times the sofa back can lay flat to make a bed.

Flipside 86'' Sleeper Sofa Bed

"Practical comes to mind especially for that extra guest room, hobby room, or home office," says Vera Jaye. "This multi-use piece of furniture is easy to open and close for those tight-fitted rooms and now come in a variety of styles from traditional to modern."

Convertible

One of the most versatile types of couch, a convertible can be transformed into a number of configurations and can often be converted into a bed.

The Toggle Convertible Couch

"I love selecting these for my clients homes because they are so versatile," says interior designer Keri Feeney. You can utilize it as a traditional sofa, as a trundle, a queen bed or just to lounge watching a movie with your feet up."

Popular Sofa Styles

Here's a quick breakdown of some of the most popular couch styles:

Mid-Century Modern
The Sven Sofa

Mid-century modern is one of the most popular sofa styles around right now. Defined by clean, curved lines, and tapered legs, the mid-century modern style has been popular since the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965).

Chesterfield
The Lyric Chesterfield

Chesterfield sofas are designed with rolled arms that are the same height as the back, deep button tufted upholstery, and nailhead trim.

Lawson

Lawson sofas feature back cushions that are separate from the frame. Lawson's can recognized by their straight lines and will often have seat depth that’s equal to the height of the sofa back above the seat. The arms also tend to be lower than the back.

Tuxedo
The Emma Sofa

Tuxedo sofas are defined by high arms that sit level with the sofa back, and a clean-lined and geometric style.  The Tuxedo style is perfect for a more formal style of room and was Tuxedo Park, New York.

English Roll Arm
The Carlisle Couch

Defined by  rounded arms that are lower than more traditional roll arm sofas. "English Roll Arm sofas are a quintessential classic statement in any home. Their style is timeless," says Anne R. Kokoskie, owner and designer at Styled by ARK. "This sofa can read formal or relaxed depending on the fabric you choose and the adjacency to the other elements in the room."

When is the Best Time to Buy a Sofa?

So when is the best time to buy a sofa?  When we asked sales and furniture experts about the best times to buy, here's what we learned:

The best time to buy furniture is during the late winter months of January and February just before the launch of new furniture and summer months like July and August as many retailers will offer end-of-summer sales.

“To be honest there's always a sale of some sort in the furniture and furnishings industry,” says Sherri Monte, founder of Seattle based interior design firm Elegant Simplicity.   “But when it comes to the interior of your home steepest sales often exist just before the launch of new furniture.”

And what's the best holiday sale of the year?

Early in the year, many retailers offer discounts on furniture when new styles are coming in. So sales offer a great way to move older stock as the new styles come in. This means that Presidents Day (in February) is often one of the best holiday weekends to shop the sales and buy discounted furniture

“With over a decade as an interior designer, we are big believers in the President's Day sales,” says Monte.

Sofa Buying Tips from the Pros

It's a big commitment to buy a new couch, so we asked some professional interior designers for some tips on what you should look out for:

1. Look for a quality frame

"Solid Kiln Dried Hardwood or High Quality Plywood for a
structurally sound piece that will stand the test of time. Kiln drying
hardwood removes 90-95% of the moisture in the wood. This helps prevent
warping and bowing over time," says Natasha Nicolaou from NatNico Designs.

2. Check cushion firmness and materials

"Firmer seats will feature high-density foam cushions, often wrapped in Dacron or batting that adds extra padding. The higher the density, the firmer the feel of the foam. Low-density foam is regarded by manufacturers as foam with a density of 1.8 and below. Softer seats will feature a blend of foam, fiber and down feathers. Down is exceptionally plush," advises Jessica Harris, Production Designer from Living Spaces.

3. Search for a manufacturer warranty

"A sofa made from good construction will automatically come with a warranty without having to purchase one, manufacturer who provide warranties are confident in their product and you can be too," says Christina Halasz from Halasz Designs.

4. Pay attention to the measurements

"Be sure to note not just the overall height, width and depth of the sofa but
also note the arm height.  If you have a tight squeeze and you have a
tuxedo style sofa, where the arms and the back are the same height, it adds to the challenge of turning a corner.  Find out whether or not the feet are removable.  Those few inches can make all the difference in the world," says Arelene Lord, Principal Designer at Lord Designs.

5. Think about how you want to use the room

"The room's function is a major deciding factor when deciding on a sofa. If it's going to be used as a  theatre or media room, relaxed soft cushion backs would be the route to go, whereas in a formal living room you’ll want a more fitted and tighter look which feels more put together and polished," says Bre Hance, Founder and CEO of InHance Interiors.

Best Sofa for Small Spaces: IKEA Morabo Loveseat

Sit tester Rachel Davies, our very own digital associate design editor, was very familiar with the leather upholstery their Morabo loveseat would be wrapped in. While it looks and feels like a leather sofa, it certainly isn’t priced like one. With the two-seater coming in at under $1,200, it's one of the best couches on the market at that very affordable price point, and it's great for a small space, like a city apartment.

Editor's note: The Morabo in brown leather, which our reviewer tested, is no longer available.

Best Leather Sofa: Burrow Block Nomad Sofa with Ottoman

Our sit tester, Terri Williams, is a professed leather-sofa lover, and she was, in her words, “over the moon happy” to give the Burrow Block Nomad sofa a try. Best Midcentury-Modern-Style Statement Sofa: CB2 Bowtie Black Wool Sofa

Live your best MCM life with the Bowtie Wool Sofa, designed by Paul McCobb for CB2. While the style is certainly a throw back, the overall vibe is extremely current. The wool blend was softer than our sit tester, DaVonne Bacchus, anticipated, and he also enjoyed the deep seat for reclining. Paired with a solid wood frame and wood legs, this little number might be more of an occasional sofa or a showpiece than an all-day lounging type of sofa, but what a showpiece it is!

How to choose a good sofa for daily use?

A sofa is one of the main and expensive interior items in every home. This is multifunctional furniture, which has a serious load on a daily basis. Choosing a high-quality, beautiful and practical sofa is not an easy task. After all, it is necessary to evaluate not only its appearance and dimensions, which should harmoniously complement the interior and correspond to the parameters of the room, but also the functional characteristics and reliability of the design. nine0005

  • Durability : For the sofa to last as long as possible, you should choose a model with a reliable and well-dried wood frame, as well as a high level of build quality. Only then will it please you for many years, retain its original appearance throughout its entire service life, and will not deform and begin to creak over time.
  • Convenience : choosing a good sofa that will be used as a sleeping place or as a place to relax in front of the TV and communicate with guests is a completely different task. But in any case, the model should be comfortable. If the sofa is too hard or too soft for you, you run the risk of a lot of problems: back pain, muscle discomfort, insomnia, etc. nine0012
  • Easy to use : some sofas fold out or have a drawer for linen: it's up to you to decide which one is better based on personal preferences, but before you buy your favorite model, test the mechanism. Does it work flawlessly and does not jam? Fine! It will be convenient and easy for you to use it!
  • Functionality : when choosing a sofa, pay attention to additional options such as removable armrests, built-in bars, cushions included. Additional functionality, of course, is reflected in the price, but it makes upholstered furniture more convenient for daily use. nine0012

From history
At the beginning of the 20th century in Europe, the staff of the Abramson furniture company included the position of "sunbed". The duties of this employee included lying on sofas, determining the level of their comfort, testing their softness and other performance characteristics, and finding flaws in the design. Such work was paid no less than the work of other workers.

How to choose a quality sofa?

When deciding which sofa to choose for the living room, bedroom, nursery, kitchen, office and any other room, you must first evaluate the following characteristics:

Frame

This is the base of the sofa. From what material it is made, depends on the service life. The metal framework is reliable in operation and is very durable. Most often it is used to make high-tech sofas. No less reliable is furniture with a frame made of natural wood (oak, beech, mahogany, etc.). But such designs are not cheap. Chipboard frames are much more affordable - they hold their shape well and are completely safe. But in order for the sofa to last longer, you need to choose a model with a frame only from that chipboard, which is covered with a protective layer and has a bolted or “thorn-groove” connection of parts. nine0007

Filling

Manufacturers of sleeping and other types of sofas often choose artificial materials such as foam rubber as filling. Quite often, spring blocks are used. The main criterion for choosing a filler is the purpose of the sofa. If you buy it mainly for sleeping, it is better to stay on models with spring blocks. Such designs are not only comfortable, but very durable and have high orthopedic properties. Sofas with foam filler are hypoallergenic, they are soft and comfortable. But with daily use they wear out quickly. Those who want the sofa not to sag over time and at the same time retain softness should choose products with a “filling” of a material such as latex foam. Due to the many microcells, it "breathes", has an orthopedic effect and lasts for decades. nine0007

Important to know!
A good sofa filler "adjusts" to the contours of the body, but after you get up, it quickly returns to its previous position.

Upholstery

The most expensive upholstered furniture is leather. It has its own advantages: high resistance to abrasion, mechanical, chemical and UV influences, protection against moisture. No less practical, but much cheaper models with leatherette upholstery. But the most popular are fabrics such as chenille, jacquard and tapestry. It is they who are chosen as upholstery for a sofa for every day, since such materials reliably protect furniture and are practically not inferior in their strength and aesthetic characteristics to leather. The main thing is that the same material is used both on the front of the product and on the back, and all seams are even and neat. nine0007

Mechanism

Do you plan to unfold the sofa from time to time? Or will you sleep on it every night? When choosing a sofa for your home, be sure to pay maximum attention to how it unfolds. Modern manufacturers produce models equipped with several types of sliding mechanism: "Book", "Click-clack", "Dolphin". "Eurobook", "Clamshell", "Accordion", a sofa with folding sidewalls or with a roll-out bed. These are indispensable options in the limited space of a small apartment. All of them are reliable and withstand numerous addition-decomposition cycles. nine0007

Designer's advice

A sofa in any room should become its decoration and pride of the owners. If the interior of the room is made in modern or high-tech style, then it is better to choose a sofa in bright colors and with clear geometric lines. Is the room design classic? Suitable model rounded with upholstery in fabric in neutral tones.

Made a Scandinavian style living room and don't know which sofa to choose? With these interiors, only products of regular shapes with plain light upholstery are in harmony. But in rooms with a design in the Provence style, models with floral patterns of any classic or modern forms will look good. nine0007

Having trouble choosing a design? Choose a sofa that has a simple shape and solid color upholstery. You can always add brightness to it and fit it harmoniously into the interior by placing a beautiful coffee table next to it or adding pillows.

Which sofa to choose for the living room?

To quickly and correctly choose a sofa in the living room, decide whether it will serve as a main or extra bed and how often it will be used as such. If you are the owner of a small apartment and plan to sleep on it every night, models with unfolding transformation mechanisms will do. For example, Accordion. Such models are one of the most comfortable, because when they are unfolded, bumps or folds do not form. Check with the manufacturer if the sofa has an orthopedic base - special armor made of strong and elastic wood species. Thanks to them, you will feel very comfortable every night for many years. nine0007

Do you plan to lay out the sofa from time to time, receiving guests? Products with retractable transformation mechanisms will suit you:

  • "Dolphin";
  • Eurobook;
  • withdrawable models.

They fold out quickly to form a flat bed, but with visible seams.

Do you like to sit comfortably in front of the TV? Then in the living room it is better to choose folding sofas with mechanisms such as "Book" or "Click-clack". Models form a somewhat uneven surface, therefore they are not suitable for daily sleep (only if an additional mattress is used), but very comfortable as a place to relax. nine0007

For a living room with a small area, a practical option - linear models for 2-3 seats with a box for linen. Be sure to check its dimensions in the unfolded state before buying. It should not block access to the balcony or prevent movement around the room. If you like to communicate with your family or friendly companies often gather at your home, it is better to choose a right, left or universal corner sofa with 5-6 seats (which corner to make depends on the size and geometry of the room). nine0007

The intensity of use of furniture in the living room is high, so its upholstery should be made of durable material. It would be optimal to choose a sofa in the hall with a fabric such as flock, jacquard or leather.

Choosing a sofa for a nursery

The range of upholstered furniture for children's rooms is incredibly wide. Bright colors, various shapes, several types of fillers - how to choose the right sofa with such a variety? To do this, you need to take into account factors such as:0007

  • functionality — children's area is usually small. Installing large furniture in it is an irrational decision. It is better to take folding models. Find out what transformation mechanism they are equipped with. For a child, the Accordion, Dolphin and Eurobook models will be the most convenient for sleeping and relaxing. Other designs are quite difficult for children to lay out.
  • appearance - the sofa should fit well into the interior, but at the same time the child will like it. As practice shows, furniture of bright colors most of all pleases kids with its appearance. After first choosing the mechanism, invite the child to decide on the color of the upholstery of the sofa. nine0012
  • practicality — if there is a box for linen or toys in the sofa for the nursery, this is a definite plus, because it will save space in the room.
  • Safety - Children's furniture must be free of harmful chemicals. It is best if the upholstery for it is made of natural fabrics: linen, microfiber, cotton. Pay attention to the design too. There should be no wide gaps, sharp corners and decorative elements! All of these can cause serious injury. nine0012

Which sofa to choose for a small office?

A pleasant office environment is essential. What kind of sofa to choose so that it turns a strict and unfriendly reception into a comfortable living room for visitors and clients? Such a piece of furniture should be simple and solid. Therefore, a model with metal supports and armrests is perfect for the office: it looks beautiful and is very durable at the same time.

Determine how much space you have in your reception area before purchasing. This will allow you to choose the right size sofa. In offices, both angular models and straight ones (two-, three- or four-seater) look appropriate. If the installation of one large model does not leave enough space for passage, try purchasing two small sofas and placing them opposite each other. Do you have a lot of free space in the office, but the number of visitors does not exceed 10 people a day? Don't get a big sofa. Medium sized furniture will do much better. nine0007

Which color of office sofa to choose for daily use depends only on your personal preferences and the interior of the room. But products with plain upholstery look best. It can be neutral light or discreet dark shades. Faux or genuine leather is the best option for upholstery. These materials look beautiful and give the room a respectable look. But keep in mind that furniture with leather upholstery is quite expensive and requires constant care. A fabric office sofa is a more budget option, but it gets dirty and wears out much faster. nine0007

And remember that a sofa is a purchase that you make for a long time. Do not hurry! Check out all its features and compare several models that suit you. After all, the quality of your sleep, rest and comfort will depend on the decision you make.

How to choose a good sofa - Lifehacker

Sofa shapes

Sofas are:

  • straight;
  • angled;
  • with ottoman;
  • modular;
  • island.

Straight sofas are a classic. Plenty of variations. There are any sizes and colors.

collectmoments/Flickr. com

Straight sofas, like corner sofas, are usually placed along the walls and are often completed with built-in tables, a mini-bar and folding shelves. It is comfortable to sleep on such sofas.

jiva/Flickr.com

Corner sofas should not be identified with ottoman sofas. In the East, this is the name of a kind of wide soft ottoman. In our furniture industry, the ottoman is understood as the protruding part of the sofa. Often without armrests, but with a niche for storage.

Modern sofas with an ottoman in the interior successfully serve as corner sofas, saving space in small rooms, and often serve as the main sleeping place for the owners.

Island sofas can be round or semi-circular, oval or rectangular. These are expensive and status sofas. They usually don't sleep on them. They are placed in the center of spacious rooms to create a relaxation area. It is desirable that the approach to the "island" be from all sides. nine0007

Modular sofas consist of several parts and can be combined in different ways. Modules can be used as individual pieces of furniture. The composition may include a module with a berth, but most often such sofas are designed for beauty and relaxation.

Thanks to their versatility and variety of shapes, modular sofas are perfect for studio apartments.

Basic transformation mechanisms

The transformation mechanism is the way the sofa is laid out. There are many options. nine0007

When you first come to the store, the variety of transformation mechanisms and their bizarre names make your head spin. In fact, everything is simple.

Mechanisms can be divided into folding, rolling and reversing. The former include "book" and "eurobook", as well as "click-clack". To the second - "telescope", "tic-tac" and "dolphin". Unfolding mechanisms are "accordion" and various "clamshells".

Swivel mechanisms stand apart. They are used in large corner sofas: one half turns to the other, forming a wide bed. nine0007 Sofa with swivel mechanism

Book and Eurobook

Book

Book sofas have been familiar to everyone since Soviet times. Raise the seat a little and get a rectangular bed. To expand such a sofa, it must be moved away from the wall. The space under the seat is usually used to store bedding and other things.

Eurobook

"Eurobook" is an improved "book". Everything is the same, only the seat is pushed forward on the skids. Simple reliable mechanism, suitable for daily layouts. Such a sofa does not need to be moved away from the wall. nine0007

Click-clack

Click-clack

This is also a modernized “book”, which, in addition to the “lying” and “sitting” positions, has intermediate options: “reclining” and “half-sitting”. The click-clack sofa is made on a metal frame with wooden battens, which often break under heavy load. It is better to use it in a nursery or for rare overnight stays.

Lit

Sofas with the "lit" mechanism are very similar in appearance and principle of operation. The difference is that they do not unfold the back - only the armrests. nine0007

Telescope (roll-out)

Telescope

Sleeper sofa-telescope consists of three parts. Two of them form the seat, and one - the back. To unfold it, you need to pull the bottom of the seat, fold the backrest forward, and fill the space between them with a mattress. Among the shortcomings: a low bed and scratches on the floor with frequent use.

Accordion

Accordion

This transformation mechanism is based on the accordion principle: the bed also consists of three parts, one of them is the seat, and the other two form the back. To expand the "accordion", you need to push the seat forward and lay the back in the same plane with it. nine0007

Sofas with such a mechanism are produced on wooden frames with ordinary metal hinges and on all-metal frames with wooden armor. The former are better not to lay out often, the latter are suitable for daily use.

Tick-tock (pantograph)

This transformation mechanism is very similar to the Eurobook. Only in the tick-tock, the seat steps forward with the help of a spring mechanism. This is a more expensive, but also more convenient option: there are no wheels, nothing scratches the floor. "Tick-tock" is perfect for those who plan to use the sofa as a bed. nine0007

Dolphin (kangaroo, microlift)

Dolphin

This is a very popular transformation mechanism. Especially in corner sofas and sofas with ottomans used for sleeping every day.

The principle of operation is simple: when laid out, a platform rolls out from under the seat, which then rises with the help of a special lift mechanism, forming a single bed. The more reliable the lifting mechanism, the longer the sofa will last.

French, American, Belgian and Italian cots

French cot

The French cot is a triple folding bed. During the transformation, the bed turns forward and is installed on arcs. But sleeping on such a sofa is quite hard. It is not suitable for daily use. This is a guest option.

American cot

The “American cot” is slightly more comfortable. There are only two additions, and therefore the mattresses are thicker, sometimes even with spring blocks. But for daily sleep is still not the most convenient option. nine0007

"Belgian clamshell" is not so much a type of transformation mechanism as a sign of the manufacturer. Franco-Belgian furniture company Sedac-Meral produces two- and three-fold folding beds with foam and spring mattresses of different heights. This is the "Belgian folding bed".

Italian folding bed

"Italian folding bed" has two additions and unfolds together with the soft elements of the sofa. Unlike other "clamshells", some "Italian" models have small containers for storing bedding. nine0007

Decide if you need a sofa for sleeping or relaxing? In the first case, it is better to take a “book”, “eurobook”, “tic-tac” or a good “dolphin”. Everything else is guest options.

Here is a table showing the pros and cons of different types of sofas.

Frame

In the production of sofas, metal and wooden frames are used, as well as frames made of wooden blocks with chipboard.

Metal frames are reliable and durable, provided that the connections are worked out by welding, and not by bolts. Any upholstery is suitable for a sofa with a metal frame. If necessary, it can be replaced. nine0007

The service life of a wooden frame depends on the species and quality of the wood. This also affects the price. The most expensive sofas are made of oak, beech, walnut and ash. More budget options are frames made of birch and coniferous wood.

In a wooden frame, the main thing is that the wood is smooth and dry. The fewer potholes and knots, the better.

The combination of wooden blocks and chipboard is the cheapest option for a sofa frame. But if the technology is observed in the production, and the elements from the chipboard are treated with special paint, such a sofa will also last for many years. nine0007

Filler

Back, seat, armrests - each element of the sofa has a filler. As a rule, it is foam rubber and polyurethane foam. There are also latex and springs.

Sofas with only foam inside are the cheapest, but the least durable. The sofa will retain its shape for as long as possible when stuffed from a single piece of foam rubber. But in three or four years, he too will sag.

Most manufacturers prefer polyurethane foam padding. It almost does not differ in price from foam rubber, but it lasts much longer. nine0007

Polyurethane foam can be block (sandwich) and cast. From the first seat, back and other elements of the sofa are simply glued together. When talking about molded polyurethane foam, they mean that at the factory it was poured into a mold in liquid form and at the output they got a molded back or armrest of the sofa.

The most durable, environmentally friendly and expensive filler is latex. Due to its high elasticity, it follows the contours of the body and instantly restores its shape. At the same time, it does not electrify, is resistant to mold and does not cause allergies. Latex is commonly used in expensive orthopedic furniture. nine0007

Separately, it is worth mentioning the spring blocks. Their presence in the sofa not only adds points to convenience, but also makes the sofa more durable and wear-resistant. Of course, provided that very high quality individual spring blocks are used.

The best option is sofas with multi-layer filler and different density coefficients in different areas. The bottom layer is the most dense, on top - a thin soft material for maximum comfort.

Upholstery

There are more sofa upholstery than transformation mechanisms. To describe everything, a separate article is needed. Therefore, consider the most popular options.

Life hacks for those who choose a sofa

  1. Decide where the sofa will stand. Draw a plan on paper. This will make it easier to navigate the store. Calculate whether there will be enough space for walking with the sofa unfolded.
  2. Decide on the function of the sofa: guest or daily sleep. Also think about who will sleep on it: a child weighing 40 kg or an adult man for a centner.
