This makeup room designed by Texas based Kim Armstrong Interior Design combines and takes advantage of dressing table ideas to maximize an otherwise unused corner that leads off a wet room.  

‘With plain walls, it would still look fabulous, but we feel it looks even more stylish with the shiplap walls because it adds depth and charm. The shiplap in this room was used in order to elevate the architecture of the room,’ says Kim.

‘I really wanted the antiques to shine together – especially the acid yellow vanity – with the lighting, mirrors and the grey and white floor. I wanted the walls to be crisp white, but I wanted something with more depth, and visually stronger than just painted sheetrock.’

This stunning dedicated makeup room idea was combined with dressing room ideas – and designed by Irene Gunter, co-founder of interior design studio, Gunter & Co .

'The homeowners Snowy and Barry are a dynamic couple who work as a fashion designer and entrepreneur respectively. Snowy’s go-to interiors palette is predominantly pale but I encouraged her to embrace subtle touches of color: golds and pink, complemented with accents of warm antiques bronze,' explains Irene.

'The entire first floor forms an indulgent master suite which includes a his and hers dressing room.'

We asked London based interior designer, Trilbey Gordon , how she set about designing this fabulous makeup space in Chapter House :

'How I like to dress is how I design. Something old and something new-new spirit, old spirit. That combination is timeless. If you buy everything new, it has a date on it; using a mix of vintage and contemporary is a great way to materialize your vision and the story you want to tell.

'A comfortable place to sit while you get ready instantly makes a dressing area feel more luxe. I used a favorite velvet fringed stool by Lorenza Bozzoli and a minimalistic marble and brass dressing table by Swoon Editions . I liked this table because it has a chic little marble shelf, where you can display your prettiest perfume bottles, as well as having a contemporary round mirror.

'I also felt it could double up as a desk if needed. I love the perfume bottles by Aerin Lauder as they have the most beautiful tops, and I found a vintage malachite Fornasetti pin dish to throw jewellery in. Abigail Ahern do the best faux grasses to put into the vases that I found in H&M Home .'

‘When looking for furniture for the home, my first port of call is antiques. They can add character and more interesting layers to a space. This Spanish antique dresser was perfect for this bedroom –  dramatic and decadent yet practical with the long mirror, marble tops and drawers for storage, and ideal for a makeup room.’

Always work with the natural architectural elements of your home as they can lend themselves well to a bespoke vanity and three quarter length mirror. 

This smart bespoke corner has beautiful neutral tones that add a luxurious feel. Tactile elements like the carpet, wallcoverings with the panels and bouclé chair all create this elegant makeup space. Gold elements add a further dimension – and there are some curves to soften the lines of the mirror and wall details. When Irene Gunter, co-founder of Gunter & Co, designed this room, the focus was on highlighting the original features and giving the room a tactile feel:

'This is a bespoke dressing table in the master bedroom of a property in Chelsea. We used a lovely woollen carpet underfoot, and a beautiful deconstructed linen fabric to create the relaxed Roman blinds.'

‘It is important to make the space work for you as each person’s routine varies; you can transform a smaller space with cleverly positioned mirrors and hidden compartments.

What are the best interior styles for a makeup room?

This really depends on your own style and if you want your makeup room to have its own unique style or for it to flow visually with the rest of your house’s scheme.

Bedroom: ladies' dressing room in the closet

Elena's story from Gomel:

— The remodeling of our bedroom began overnight and proceeded rapidly. All because it was already unbearable to live in a room with an old renovation. The furniture that we bought 15 years ago with "wedding" money is hopelessly outdated: both morally and physically. The closet did not close, the fronts of the chest of drawers were peeling off, the bed creaked terribly. One day we got so tired of it that we took out an envelope with the inscription "Money for vacation" and began to spend it for other purposes. nine0003

The size of the room is 4 by 4 - you can't really walk around here. Therefore, the requests were small: the main thing is a spacious closet and a normal bed. Therefore, the repair began with the search for furniture. The bed was ordered in an online store, and the wardrobe was ordered from our furniture maker friend.

Then we started the repair work. The walls were leveled. A niche was built at the head of the drywall bed. We argued for a long time how to highlight it. I wanted mirror tiles, my husband wanted plaster. As a result, an artificial stone was glued. What we do not regret. Together with the backlight, we got a cozy panel at the head. nine0003

We did not suffer for a long time with the color of the wallpaper. Our whole house has been in beige-brown tones for five years now, and we have not tired of this color scheme during this time. Vanilla-colored wallpaper was chosen for one wall, a light chest of drawers was supposed to be on the opposite wall, and we decided that it would look very advantageous against a contrasting brown background. That's where they stopped. (True, the chest of drawers has not yet appeared, and so far the white orchid contrasts with the wall).

We decided not to be too smart with the ceiling. A beige satin canvas was stretched in the niche of the drywall box. But in the backlight, the husband invested both money and soul to the maximum. As a result, we have a multi-level light. The only useless, in my opinion, thing is the LED strip around the perimeter of the stretch ceiling, we rarely turn it on. But the backlight above the window is a useful thing, it perfectly copes with the role of a night lamp.

When the finishing work was completed, the main character, our bed, moved into the room. With a soft headboard and a good orthopedic mattress. Width - 1 m 60 cm, and this is enough. Although, to be honest, now I think that it was possible, without prejudice to the area, to safely order a bed 20 cm wider, especially since the bedside tables have not yet been bought - their function is performed by such boxes (they were made by myself). nine0003

When thinking about storage, I really wanted everything to fit in there. We settled on a closet. We thought for a long time about which facades to choose. Finally, we decided on mirror, but not simple, but bronzed, in a wenge color profile. Their main charm is that, regardless of the time of day and season, you always have a toned and tanned reflection in front of you. Believe me, when you are not 20, this is an important option.

Inside on both sides it is a normal cabinet. I'll tell you more about the middle section. When they started renovating the bedroom, I worked from home (the company saved money on an office in the city center, however, this fact did not upset me at all). A workspace in the bedroom is a bad idea. But the choice was small - either work at the computer in the kitchen, or in the nursery ... Therefore, we decided to make an office in the closet. In the end, at any moment you could slam the laptop, close the compartment door, and the office would immediately disappear. nine0003

Six months later I was offered another job, and the need to work in the closet disappeared by itself. The next day, the office was successfully converted into a dressing room for ladies. Now everything that a real woman needs is here: mountains of cosmetics, perfume, a mirror with illumination and ... the skeleton "Artem".

Remember how a couple of years ago everyone bought magazines with his spare parts? Our daughter is no exception. Now she doesn't need him. And how do I! I adapted it for a stand for my numerous beads, and a skull for a jewelry box. nine0003

How to place a mirror in the bedroom

Why a mirror in the bedroom?

First, let's answer this question that many people ask before or during repairs. The mirror itself can perform two functions - practical (allows you to examine yourself when performing hygienic or cosmetic procedures) and decorative (decorates the interior, emphasizing its geometry without focusing on interaction with people). nine0003

In the vast majority of cases, these functions overlap each other, and only a small number of mirror panels or small mirror installations are aimed exclusively at a decorative function, and it is difficult to use such products for their intended purpose.

First of all, this is due to the lack of a reflective surface without facet (in the case of panels) or small compositions. Or because of the impossibility of conveniently approaching such a canvas if it is located above the sofa, bed or in another hard-to-reach place. nine0003

For bathrooms and hallways, for example, mirrors must always have a practical function, otherwise they simply do not make sense. That is why installing a panel with many small details or an intricate composition of small mirrors in such rooms is a very bad idea.

In the bedroom the situation is a bit different, both types of mirrors are acceptable and the choice of a specific type or combination of them depends on how you place the chosen model.

Choosing a mirror for the bedroom

Like any other room, the bedroom can be divided into functional areas, the presence of which and their location is unique for each house. Often this room can be divided into the following sectors:

With the exception of the work area, a mirror will look great in all of the above sectors, but in the dressing room and make-up areas it is a must. Let's take a closer look at each part of the bedroom and find out where and which mirrors are best suited.

Bed area

For the bed area, there are several trendy solutions that are especially well suited for classic interiors, namely, the location of a mirror or panel above the bedside tables. nine0003

The width of such products must be chosen according to the width of the bedside tables, and it is desirable to make the height as high as possible.

At the same time, please note that an ordinary mirror sheet makes the room visually larger, and the panel can fit more harmoniously into the interior thanks to an interesting facet pattern that repeats the patterns of wall decoration or other parts of the room. Wardrobe area
