Sideboard decor ideas can really elevate your entertaining space. As well as offering useful storage space, the sideboard is the perfect spot to display treasures and trinkets, and creates a focal point for artwork and lighting.

If you are gathering dining room ideas, don't just focus on the table – the sideboard really does have a role in your rooms scheme, too.

'Think about how you're going to bring your unique personality into the dining room to help decide how to style a sideboard,' says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-CEO at home décor brand Dowsing & Reynolds .

'Books, art, photos, vases, trinkets, colors and details all provide an opportunity to say something about yourself, and make great talking points at dinner parties.'

Sideboard decor ideas

You can have a lot of fun dressing up your sideboard, and interior experts always relish the job.

'Sideboards are some of our favorite moments to style,' says Studio Ashby . 'Art, lighting, ceramics, beautiful books and trinkets are all chic choices.'

Below, we show you the experts' top sideboard decor ideas to set your dining room apart.

1. Make it pretty yet practical

(Image credit: Neptune)

Your sideboard is the perfect spot for styling decorative objects, but don't forget it can also be used for extra storage. Glazed-fronted sideboards can make for great small dining room ideas – the space will feel less crowded than with solid furniture, plus glass allows you to show off what you're storing – albeit in a chic way.

Louise Wicksteed, Design Director at Sims Hilditch , says: 'We love to use sideboards in dining rooms as this is a great way to use the space. They are perfect for storing crockery, napkins, and cutlery to be used for more formal occasions.'

2. Highlight sideboard decor ideas with lighting

(Image credit: Arteriors)

If you are working on lighting a dining room, make space on a sideboard for lamps. This will not only allow you to create soft pools of low light – so welcome in a dining room – but will also illuminate your sideboard decor ideas.

Helen Pett, Design Ambassador at Arteriors London , adds: 'Of course, when entertaining, the additional table space can be used for floral arrangements, beautiful china and glassware and serving platters while still sitting prettily as key part of your décor.'

3. Maximize sideboard decor ideas with a mirror

(Image credit: 'Michelle Nussbaumer and Stephen Karlisch)

If you are considering dining room wall ideas that create drama, then an antiqued glass, elaborately framed-mirror is the best find for traditional dining spaces. Plus, decorating with mirrors will double the impact of any sideboard decor ideas you're displaying – especially in smaller or dark spaces. It's a win win.

4. Display art to focus attention on sideboard decor ideas

(Image credit: Natalia Miyar)

Art, hung centrally above a sideboard, placed centrally behind a dining table, can create a focal point that frames the entire space.

Whether it's wall-hung or propped on your sideboard, a good general rule of thumb to follow when styling your sideboard is to make the artwork around two-thirds of its width. This gives a visually pleasing proportion while also working to invigorate the space.

5. Employ the overlapping technique

(Image credit: Neptune)

To make your sideboard decor ideas feel curated, don't be afraid for your objects and anchoring pieces to 'overlap'.

Place a lamp slightly in front of your artwork, or let foliage, twigs or flowers spread across the central piece; this will allow the finished look to feel cohesive and interactive, rather than static and flat.

6. Play with height

(Image credit: Kristin Karch Photography/The Misfit House)

One of the most important elements of styling sideboard decor is to ensure your display includes objects of varying heights to add interest to the look.

'Playing with heights and layers is essential,' states Jane Rockett of Rockett St George . 'However, this doesn’t necessarily mean putting the tallest items in the center of the sideboard. An asymmetrical display looks particularly great when styling a sideboard and allows you to build height and a focal point at just one end.'

Ally at Dowsing Reynolds adds: 'Style an uneven assortment of smaller items alongside tall or oversized items to create height and layers. Piles of books that reflect your interests alongside meaningful sculptures make great focal points.'

If you choose sideboard decor ideas that chime with your dining table decor ideas you will create a neat, coordinated look, too.

7. Group objects in threes

(Image credit: Murphy Deesign)

To make sure your sideboard decor ideas don't look higgledy-piggledy, try grouping your objects into threes for a curated finish that's easy on the eye.

The rule of three is a great interior design tip that you can apply to many aspects of your decor scheme, and is certainly the magic number when it comes to styling for a fresh appeal.

'Much like your coffee table or shelves, styling your sideboard decor ideas is an opportunity to be playful and reveal more of your personality within your interior,' says Jane Rockett.

8. Create a tableau

(Image credit: Arteriors)

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed at the prospect of styling your sideboard decor ideas, why not create a tableau – which is simply a group of objects that, together, look like they're made for each other?

Just as with coffee table styling, Jane Rockett suggests that 'you shouldn't worry about filling the entire space', while Arteriors' Helen Pett comments: 'We like starting with a nice low-rise sculpted centerpiece and a coffee table book stack for an everyday look.'

You could even simply add a group of candles at varying heights for a stylish and simple look.

9. Add a sculptural piece to anchor your display

(Image credit: Tiffany Leigh Design/Lauren Miller)

Sculptural vases, objets and lamps are a stylish way to make a statement and turn your sideboard decor ideas into an arty showcase that blends form and function – coordinate them to the rest of your scheme and you can pull a larger space together – useful if you are looking for uniting kitchen diner ideas.

'Add ambience and pockets of light with table lamps, and repeat textures, shapes and colors around the room,' suggests Ally Dowsing-Reynolds.

Don't neglect candles as part of your sideboard decor display. Jane Rockett adds: 'For a sideboard in the dining room, candles, candlesticks and vases always look beautiful.'

Louise Wicksteed says: 'When it comes to styling a dining room sideboard, we suggest placing a large candle at either end. Not only does this offer subtle background lighting around the table but also nods to the elegance of the room by providing well thought-out symmetry.'

10. Display your glassware

(Image credit: Arteriors)

A sideboard can double up as a drinks cabinet in a dining room, and is ideal for displaying your pretty glassware for after-dinner drinks.

Jane Rockett says: 'A sideboard is the perfect place to curate a mini cocktail bar with a few of your favurite tipples and glassware on display.'

Mix your drinks' display with other pretty artefacts, candles and vases, or an oversized plant for extra wow factor.

How can I decorate my sideboard?

To decorate a sideboard well, there are a few rules to follow that are really useful:

What do you put in a sideboard?

Sideboards are really useful for storing everything you might need for dining – from cutlery and china to linen and flatware. You can also usefully store candles, matches, placemats and glassware in a sideboard. When shopping for a sideboard, consider what you will need to store in it – drawers will be more useful for storing candles, cutlery and placemats; cupboards for glassware and china. A combination of both is the most versatile choice.

      Sideboard in the living room in a modern style: 32 photo ideas for interior design

      The kitchen does not always have enough space to store dishes, especially those that are not used daily. Beautiful plates and ceremonial service can be turned into a full-fledged decorative element by allocating a special open cabinet for them and thereby solving two problems at once. We tell you how to choose a sideboard in the living room in a modern style: what to combine with and which model to choose.

      All about choosing a sideboard

      How to choose
      Placement of dishes

      This type of furniture appeared at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries thanks to French craftsmen. Quite quickly, it took on a modern look: two sections, the upper one is closed or transparent. But the range of materials from which cupboards were made was very limited - in the past, only wood was used, moreover, expensive noble species, and the furniture body was necessarily decorated with decorative elements and intricate carvings, sometimes inlaid with precious stones. Later, cheaper models began to appear, from the same tree - but from less valuable species and with a laconic, modest design.

      Initially, sideboards were placed in the kitchen, but in the USSR, mirrors on the inner walls were added to the classic version, products became taller and wider, and so the sideboard smoothly moved into the living room, turning into a full-fledged wardrobe. But the functional purpose of the buffet has remained unchanged to this day: the sideboard is used to store dishes and accessories, sometimes linen is folded in the closed part.

      It used to be in almost every apartment, so even today you can find a Soviet sideboard in a modern interior. Due to the variety of designs, it is easy to fit into the design of the room, regardless of its size. In the living room and dining room, dish racks play a primarily decorative role, so, in addition to plates and glasses, beautiful vases, figurines and other accessories can be placed on the shelves.

      Sideboards are divided into several types according to the type of construction.

      • Standard - classic cabinets with legs or a solid base, can be narrow or multi-section.
      • Wall-mounted - floor or hanging models that are attached to the wall.
      • Corner - Sets specially designed for placement in the corner of the room, can be either floor or wall.
      • Modular - prefabricated systems that are made up of individual elements to fit the desired dimensions.
      • A slide is a multi-level structure that is placed along the wall and provides space for a TV.

      A sideboard, as in the photo below, can be full-sized or part of a structure - fit into a niche, arch or furniture wall.

      Today, wood is not the only possible material for building a cupboard, although it is still very popular. Let's consider the main ones.

      Wood

      Still, wood remains a classic when it comes to cabinet furniture. It produces reliable, environmentally friendly products that last a long time, and also go well with transparent glass inserts.

      Simple wooden sideboards feel good in modern styles, especially Scandinavian ones. The natural texture of wood will give the living room an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, and the painted body will make the rack a bright accent. Black color in combination with frosted or stained glass will add luxury to the atmosphere.

      An old sideboard looks interesting in a modern interior - rare furniture will give a trendy vintage atmosphere, besides, a design with history always seems more soulful and cozy.

      Metal

      Metal sideboards also have impressive technical characteristics. A durable frame will be safe, and will last for decades. By design, racks can be completely closed, standard (base plus glazed doors) or open.

      This is a great option for interiors with a rugged touch or a minimalist twist, especially in combination with glass or other chrome elements. A dark frame will add a graphic touch to the room, and a gold or copper coating will make the bright living room look more formal.

      MDF or chipboard

      If you need the best value for money, then pay attention to these modern materials. They are made from compressed wood waste, they serve for a long time, but at the same time they are much cheaper than natural wood. Another plus is a large selection of product shapes, external coating (the surface can be matte, glossy, embossed or smooth), colors.

      • Select the cabinet size based on the living room area. If the room is spacious, a large floor buffet will fill the space and also emphasize the luxury of the interior. If the room is small, it is better to choose a more compact model of a simple form.
      • The glass in the showcase can be transparent, frosted or combined. Interesting options - tinting, stained glass film or the so-called milky glass - due to special processing, it is almost opaque. Remember that translucent attracts attention, makes you want to see what is hidden behind obscure silhouettes. To enhance this effect, you can add interior lighting to the closet, which will emphasize the shapes of objects.
      • Consider what will be inside. The height, depth, width of the shelves, as well as their number will depend on this. If you're displaying decanters, vases, and other tall items, make sure you have enough space for them.
      • If you don't want all your dishes to be visible, choose traditional models with a transparent top and closed bottom drawers - you can remove all the unsightly in them.
      • The position of the shelving is important. If this is one closet, it can visually separate the living room area from the dining group or be the focal point of the interior around which the composition is built. Another option is a pair of narrow cabinets, which, as a rule, are placed symmetrically in the center of the soft group, on either side of the sofa or fireplace.

      • Backlight works best with plain white.
      • Stacks of cymbals should be kept small in height to avoid piling up.

      What to put in the wall behind the glass. Stylish arrangement of dishes in a sideboard

      If there is a sideboard with a transparent door in the kitchen or dining room, then it will be the second most important piece of furniture after the table. Therefore, it will influence both the style and the mood in the room. From a practical point of view, you should decide whether it will contain only festive dishes or everyday plates. Whatever your choice, we will inspire you to create a real masterpiece.

      Let's start with items for each day. If beautiful dishes are rarely used in the dining room, then it might be worth putting them in a box and putting them away, and filling the cupboard with what you use daily. Plates, mugs and glasses, which are always at hand, will simplify table setting, and behind the sideboard glass they will look no worse than beautiful models. The lower drawers are useful for storing cutlery and napkins.

      To make everyday look more festive, you can put flower vases or candles on the shelves, especially if they are open. They will enliven the interior and decorate the table.

      If the choice fell on dishes for a special occasion, then you can admire them, and the closed cabinet doors protect them from dust. If there are more items in the set than can fit in the sideboard, then you should not cram everything into it. Arrange beautifully what you can, and put the rest in boxes.

      Something should be put in, and something should be put in. It is better to place large plates vertically, so that it rests on the wall. If there is a feeling that the plate may fall, then it can be fixed with a stack of others.

      For everyday dishes, this rule also works - a large dish can be placed between the sideboard wall and cups or plates.

      By stacking similar items together, you can not only save space, but also give your closet a stylish look. Cups, saucers and cake stands look good this way.

      If all the cake plates are stored in one place, it is worth thinking about other items that are required mainly during the holidays. For example, cake candles can be placed in a cup, drinks can be placed on one of the shelves, and flower vases on the other.

      If you hang the most beautiful item from the set, you can not only stylishly update the interior of the room, but also save some space. The main thing is to look at the places on the shelves before driving a nail into the wall in order to determine the correct location.

      Glasses should be lined up like soldiers on parade - straight, clear and neat. For each type, you need to select your shelf, and not mix them.

      A little contrast will give an interesting look to the whole room. If you are using white plates, consider a black sideboard. Against the background of a dark or bright color, the dishes will stand out favorably.

      Even if only the inside of the cabinet is contrasted, the dishes will immediately look completely different.

      If there is little space left after arrangement, you can add a pleasant dynamic with the help of other items. For example, a combination of plates and books or an unusual picture will be interesting.

      Even in the living room, such an interior item will be appropriate if you give it the desired effect - for example, combine dishes and vases.

      You can approach the sideboard from the other side and fill it with books that look amazing behind the glass door. Moreover, the more books, the better.

      When in doubt, always stick to symmetry. So that such an arrangement is not completely boring, you can add some interesting candle or vase to the dishes.

      How beautiful to arrange wine glasses in the closet. Types of cupboards for storing tableware

      Initially, such structures were used as decor for rich houses, they exhibited family crystal or expensive dinner sets and family values.

      Over time, a kitchen cabinet for dishes has ceased to be a mere decoration, becoming practical and functional, able not only to fit into the interior of any room, but also to accommodate various accessories, the main types include:

      Buffet or sideboard. Retro style models are multi-level structures and can be equipped with solid or glass hinged doors with sufficient internal shelf space to accommodate crockery and other accessories.

      Display cabinet. Such a modern cupboard for dishes in the living room or in the kitchen is characterized by glazing of almost the entire structure for a presentation display of objects and accessories placed inside, drawers are equipped in the lower part.

      Hanging cabinet. Neat and compact cabinets used in conditions of necessary space saving in small living rooms or studios, dining areas, glass doors of such structures are made of impact-resistant and hardened material, with additional decor.

      Corner cabinet. Replacing a traditional sideboard with a corner cabinet for dishes, you can not only free up additional space in the living room, but also emphasize the design of the room, bring a special charm to it and highlight individual architectural features of the layout.

      When furnishing an apartment, it is necessary to take a responsible approach to the choice of furniture; modern style allows you to complement the interior solution with structures with an original design and stylish appearance.

      What can be put in a sideboard instead of dishes. Varieties of cabinet furniture for utensils

      Display cabinet - a cross between a sideboard and a real glass display case, where it is appropriate to put:

      • beautiful dishes;
      • original souvenirs;
      • collectibles;
      • handicrafts;
      • exotic shells;
      • rare folios;
      • antiques, etc.

      Everything that is worthy of being put on public display fills the showcase in the living room.

      Glass protects the exhibition from dust, temperature fluctuations, excessive humidity, accidental touches of hands or paws of pets.

      The showcase has much in common with the sideboard, which has less glass and a more massive wood body.

      Cabinet for "guest" tableware with glass doors used to be a mandatory attribute of the living room, today it is replaced by new forms.

      Glass cabinets become more open, they have transparent not only the front doors, but also the sides.

      The buffet is the oldest predecessor of the sideboard, but its place was in the kitchen. The bourgeois life at the beginning of the 20th century assumed eclecticism, any furniture was brought into the house, looking for a free corner for it.

      But some kind of showcase for expensive porcelain dishes can be seen in the palace interior, however, if the living room served as a dining room.

      Modern cabinet furniture can additionally have a different functional load.

      Glass shelves for crockery and souvenirs are used as light shelving in the wall separating the living room and kitchen area.

      This method of zoning with furniture looks modern and original.

      Designers also offer in-wall display cases that separate pilasters or rectangular columns.

      There are illuminated glass shelves between them, and front doors may be missing.

      How to beautifully arrange a table service in a sideboard.

      How to arrange a tea set in a sideboard

      Many people think that there is no particular difficulty in arranging a tea set in a sideboard. But in reality this is far from the case.

      It is worth remembering that all kitchen utensils must be in harmony in several parameters, the main of which is the quality of the material from which it is created, and the functional purpose.

      On the site http://i-posud.com.ua/catalog/brendyi/luminarc/ you can get acquainted with high-quality tea sets and other utensils of the Luminarc brand.

      There are some rules that must be followed:

      • Elite kitchen utensils should not be placed in the sideboard or in the wall. This applies even to very expensive utensils.
      • It is not recommended to place crystal on the same shelf with ceramics.
      • There should be no wine glasses or glasses among the tea set.

      Kitchen utensils should also match in price. At the same time, the most common mistake most hostesses make is that they want to show off everything to guests.

      But over the long years of life, more than one service accumulates in the house. And if you exhibit all of them, then it will be simply impossible to notice the most beautiful and valuable because of the frivolity.

      It is for this reason that one should adhere to the golden rule: only beautiful dishes in small quantities should be visible. Then its elegance and originality will become more noticeable. But you should also not rush to extremes, because the half-empty shelves of the wall and the sideboard look a little boring and poor.

      Many simply do not understand how ceramic tea sets can decorate an open shelf. But if the design is interesting, then why not. It is worth remembering that porcelain and crystal do not need to be placed side by side. Thanks to this, the original approach to the design of the room will be emphasized.

      Arrangement rules

      Tea sets arranged by height look rather primitive. Plates and cups do not need to be stacked. If there is not enough space on open shelves, then it is better to place these utensils in a closed space.

      It is not necessary to display the entire tea service. It is enough to put in a conspicuous place a few tea cups and a milk jug, as well as a sugar bowl and a teapot for tea leaves.

      In addition, if you choose the right combination, you can arrange some elegant souvenirs, thanks to which the tea set will look even better.

      How beautiful it is to arrange dishes in a hill. Construction and design of classic sideboards

      The design of the sideboard is reminiscent of a sideboard. But, unlike a sideboard, a sideboard can consist of several sections, each of which is designed to store certain things.

      In the classic embodiment, a sideboard is a piece of furniture, conditionally consisting of two elements:

      • upper cabinet with glass doors;
      • lower chest of drawers.

      The world's first sideboards were made exclusively from precious woods. The fashion of the 18th century demanded ornateness, sophistication and pretentiousness, so sideboards were often decorated with intricate carvings, golden plating, curved legs and rich fittings. At the same time, the sideboard could be made both in the form of a single structure, and in the form of two independent elements - a massive wide chest of drawers and an elongated high showcase. The chest of drawers, as a rule, was equipped with shelves or drawers in which the housewives stored kitchen utensils or textile accessories. As for the showcase, its space was divided by shelves into several sectors, thanks to which it was possible to place a lot of table sets and porcelain items in it.

      Another difference between a sideboard and a sideboard is the presence of doors. If the upper part of the sideboard can be open, then the sideboard showcase, as a rule, was equipped with doors with glass elements. Depending on the shape and design features, this piece of furniture could have one, two or more doors, which were often complemented by wooden frames, doors and decorative details.

      Despite the fact that the sideboard was originally created to store dishes and cutlery, this piece of furniture could be placed not only in the kitchen or dining room, but also in any other room. For example, the interior fashion of France in the 18th century made it possible to place a sideboard in the most prominent place in the living room or hall for receiving guests.

      In our open spaces, the sideboard gained popularity in Soviet times. But since at that time people preferred maximum simplicity and conciseness, the design of this piece of furniture was greatly transformed. The facade of the Soviet sideboard was not decorated, but carefully cleaned and polished, because of which the product began to look like a kind of cupboard for dishes.

      It may seem that the sideboard is purely decorative furniture, which is used in modern decorations only to give an additional stylistic load. However, this is not only a beautiful, but also a rather functional item that allows you to organize a convenient storage system for things and utensils.

      How to arrange a sideboard. Sideboard: what is it and how to choose?

      It is very important to understand correctly what a sideboard is. You can not consider this type of furniture as something old-fashioned and gone into oblivion. After all, knowing how to choose a good sideboard, you can create an interior that fully meets the basic design requirements.

      What is it?

      It is difficult to find a person who could say exactly what a sideboard is and how it looks in real life. There is even a popular stereotype that all such furniture is old-fashioned. Indeed, sideboards were actively used in 1940-1960s. But they can be used today, if you choose a good model. The exact synonym for the word "sideboard" will be the expression "low buffet".

      In a sideboard they usually kept:

      • dishes;
      • table linen;
      • foodstuffs;
      • drinks.

        Therefore, the traditional place for a sideboard is the kitchen and adjacent rooms.

        And in the most luxurious houses, where there were many rooms, sideboards were placed in the dining rooms. After all, that's where they were needed.

        Having dealt with the main use of sideboards, it is worth considering that this type of furniture is somewhat different from a sideboard.

        Traditionally, sideboards had only a single compartment, and cupboards used glass tops.

        Now, however, this line has been fairly erased. Some models of sideboards are deliberately made according to old drawings. Then they become an excellent filling for apartments in retro style. However, they try to use predominantly modern materials, limiting themselves to antique decoration. The convenience of such a piece of furniture as a result of this approach is fully preserved.

        Types

        Let's talk about the existing varieties of this piece of furniture.

        Standard

        A typical kitchen and dining sideboard these days is more in line with an old sideboard. It is also divided into 2 main parts. A glass frame is usually placed on top, covering dishes or some other items. This is the part that everyone focuses on. Below is a closed capacious curbstone.

        Items of no aesthetic value are put there:

        • cutlery;
        • miscellaneous linen;
        • tablecloths, napkins;
        • towels and similar accessories.

        The height of the sideboard of the standard sample is a maximum of 2 m. Some models do not exceed 1 m. The shelves on top are mainly made of transparent glass. At the bottom they are made of wood so that they can withstand a large load.

        Part of the sideboard modifications involves the use of not ordinary shelves, but drawers.

        Gap separating two tiers not available on all models. But if it is provided, you can put there:

        • a vase;
        • low flower pot;
        • basket;
        • fruits;
        • newspapers, magazines.

        Some of the latest generation sideboards can be built with space for a TV (home theater, laptop, etc. ). The number of furniture doors is different - 2, 3 or 4. Doors are decorated with patterns and fittings. Some designers recommend using stained-glass windows for finishing the cabinet. Sideboards are usually placed on 4 legs, but it is not difficult to find models without legs at all.

        A simple floor sideboard for the kitchen usually has a showcase design. It allows you to flaunt everything that is placed inside and even on the mezzanine.

        Reflection of the internal volume in the mirrored rear wall visually enlarges the space of the cabinet and makes it more impressive.

        Separate mention should be made of kitchen sideboards, which, along with dishes, can hold:

        • tea, coffee, cocoa;
        • confectionery;
        • sweets;
        • cereals;
        • salt, sugar.

          Bookcases are often used in libraries and schools. Behind glazed shelves, any printed and handwritten publications are stored longer. They are reliably protected from moisture and dust. Caring for books when using such furniture is simplified to a minimum. A bookcase is more practical than separate shelves.

          Corner

          This type of free-standing sideboard allows you to achieve:

          • maximum functional use of space;
          • attractive appearance;
          • demonstration of the external beauty of all objects inside.
