So you have a headboard (or at the very least, a mountain of pillows stacked against the wall), but what about the space above that? For some reason, the space above the bed is a tricky one to decorate. As the focal point of your bedroom, the negative space above your bed feels so personal; it’s the one place where you can let your personality shine through the most. Luckily, there are seemingly limitless ways to jazz up the empty space.

From above-the-bed art to gridded gallery walls to statement-making tapestries, the options are a-plenty. Here are 60 to pull inspiration from.

1. Hang a map
Skip the frame entirely and hang up a vintage map of your favorite region. The bare-bones look works in a minimalist bedroom with lots of open space.

2. Try three different-sized frames
If uniformity isn’t your thing, you’ll love this decor option. Each of these frames are different sizes, but they’re placed in a way that ties the bed together just neatly enough. So if you can’t seem to choose from your favorite photo collection, try hanging all three up to achieve this effortless look.

3. Use wallpaper and nothing else
Yes, it’s actually possible to blend minimalist and maximalist designs togetherr at once. This Barcelona bedroom uses a sophisticated yet bold wallpaper pattern to decorate the negative space behind the bed. Let the wallpaper speak for itself by leaving the wall free of hanging decor.

4. Frame a retro piece of art
The retro, wheel painting in this San Francisco rental truly becomes the focal point of the room. This technique is highly effective if you want to make a statement effortlessly.

5. Go for stability with shelves
Propping your bed up against a set of shelves (like in this product shot via The Wonder Forest, who sells the super cute pineapple bedding) might be a little bit of a new move for you, but if you have the space, it’s an interesting way to bring in more storage as well as something to look at above your headboard. Fill with books, picture frames and decorative objects to keep it interesting (and dust regularly!).

6. Wallpaper a wall
Take a leaf out of designers’ Kate McIntyre and Brad Huntzinger book (via Lonny) and decorate your empty wall space with wallpaper. A paper with a more sparse oversized mural pattern is daring without being dizzying. For example, while this floral and fern print is definitely bold, it also uses a lot of negative space, making it feel a little less overwhelming.

7. Install a shelf
Skip the tufted headboard and instead decorate with a shelf laden with accent pieces you love. Nuevo Estilo proves that from books to old oil paintings to statement lamps, adding a floating shelf can do wonders for the room.

This huge abstract art print breathes life into this otherwise monochromatic bedroom by @duealberi, making it a great choice for decorating over a bed. Bright, colorful and open to interpretation, abstract art always makes a good choice for a bedroom.

10. Open up the room with a mirror
The room will feel bigger with a few mirrors strategically placed around it, and a minimalist circle shape looks wonderful hung over a bed frame. Designer Lauren Geremia (via Architectural Digest) shows what a difference the small move could make with this Scandinavian inspired space.

11. Drape a tapestry
There’s a tapestry for just about any #mood. And we love this crazy cool Ouija board tapestry that @niche_noire used for decorating over a bed. The black and white serves as the perfect complement to the dark gray bedding.

14. Add texture with a wall hanging

15. Make a gridded gallery wall
If you have lots of different prints you want to hang, why not try decorating above the bed? If you have a large, blank space to work with, you can create a collage with just about anything you want. Try mixing color with black and white, old photos with new, or abstract art with photographs. We’re definitely drawing inspo from this bedroom by @brass.bed.manor.

17. Add a jungle of plants
If you’re not one to collect art prints, hang up giant tapestries, or clutter your shelves with knick-knacks, then maybe plants are the way to go for you. Copy Katie & Tyler Branch of Branch Abode by installing a floating shelf above your bed, and then filling it with a tangle of potted plants. So cozy and eye catching!

18. Invest in a statement lamp
A great, sculptural way to fill up that negative space is to get a statement wall lamp that brings a lot of drama to the room. You can get an interesting industrial one that’s larger in size and brings lines into the room, like designer Amber Lewis did in this space she shared on Instagram.

19. Opt for textural baskets
Colorful, artisan baskets have been en vogue for a bit now and they’re a great option for above the bed. The round shape pairs nicely juxtaposed with a streamline headboard like the one here shot by Tessa Neusstadt for Homepolish via Style Files, while the lightweight nature makes them less worrisome (in case you’re not too handy with hanging and something comes crashing down in your sleep).

Here’s the predicament: you have lots of natural light from windows in your room, but barely any space to feature your one-of-a-kind paintings. Bedroom paintings above bed
Framed images are the most common type of interior decoration. There are both budgetary ways of decorating (posters, photographs, large-circulation prints on canvas), and more expensive solutions (works of art). This can be one large picture, two or three in a set (diptych and triptych), or a composition of several images united by a common theme.
If the room is small, do not break it up with small details - it is better to choose one large image, for example, a landscape. The picture above the bed should fit harmoniously and complement the atmosphere of the room. nine0011
Moldings or empty frames
You can decorate your bedroom without much expense with relief. There are two options for decorating the wall above the headboard:
- Glue the planks to the surface, carefully considering the arrangement of sections and furniture placement.
- Hang empty photo or picture frames, pre-painting them in one tone and making a harmonious composition.
By decorating your bedroom in any of these ways, you can get a sophisticated yet unobtrusive décor. It is appropriate in both modern and classic interiors. nine0011
Carpet
Many have abandoned the tradition of hanging a carpet on the wall: this element has long been considered a relic of the past and often appears in collections about antitrends. But admirers of eclecticism and fusion still love the colorful carpets that adorn the head of the bed.
Particularly appreciated handicrafts, giving the interior of the bedroom a special comfort.
Instead of a carpet, you can use drapery in a suitable shade: the fabric on the wall always looks original and textured. nine0011
Mirrors
A mirror sheet is a functional item that visually expands a room. Reflecting light and space, the product adds air and depth to the room. An interesting and practical look is a wide mirror that occupies the entire wall above the headboard - this is a great technique for a small bedroom. Also, one or more mirrors of an unusual shape or in a fancy frame are suitable for decoration.
Shelves

Shelves above the bed (50 photos)
Another way to make your bedroom useful is to hang a shelf over your headboard. It is used instead of a bedside table for storing small things, lamps are hung on it, frames with posters and books are placed. The shelf is good because its content changes without much effort.
If there is not enough storage space in the bedroom, closed cabinets can be hung above the headboard. This idea is suitable only for those who are comfortable sleeping under heavy structures. nine0011
Lamps
Sconces and pendants are not only necessary elements for lighting the bedroom, but also excellent additions to maintain the chosen style. The warm light of the lamps allows you to read a book before going to bed, sets you up for sleep and creates an intimate atmosphere.
When choosing fixtures, it should be taken into account that some fixtures look like an independent element of decor and do not need additions in the form of paintings or mirrors.
Macrame
The finest homes of today are decorated with knot weaving. Macrame creates the feeling of an exclusive thing, made by hand or to order, which means expensive. Openwork weaving gives the bedroom a cozy, homely atmosphere. Macrame looks most appropriate in Scandinavian, boho and eco-style.
Garlands
Lights, picturesquely hung over the bed, are good not only for the New Year. Garlands with warm light give a sense of magic and set in a romantic mood, and also serve as a night light and look great in a child's room. nine0011
Wooden saw cuts
Wood is a natural material with a unique texture, subtle aroma and relief that is pleasant to the touch. Lacquered slabs are often found in expensive interiors. Whole slabs or saw cuts fixed at the headboard add color to the room.
Art Objects
Items that can be hung over the bed must be safe and secure. Everything else is a matter of taste. Abstractions, compositions made of origami, porcelain or metal can serve as decoration. nine0011
The main thing is that the decor should not stand out from the general style of the interior and please the owners.

What to hang above the bed in the bedroom
The wall and ceiling above the bed is the most visible space in the bedroom. It is quite large in area, dominates the view map, but is not intended for active use. Given these features, let's proceed to its design and choose what to hang above the bed. Bamboo, mobiles, paddles, slate and 10 more decor options that can be placed on the headboard for good, beauty and healthy sleep.
Painting is a simple solution that claims to be the most boring, but can also become the most fashionable. We divide the reproduction of a famous work into fragments and hang it in a logical order. For example, in the form of a triptych or mosaic. Or we print a large illustration, and close it with a stencil frame on top so that the main elements of the picture are guessed in the holes. We choose the color of the stencil either from the general room scale, or from the main palette of the canvas. If you want to see the whole picture, think about the baguette. Frames can be stacked on top of each other, using their different sizes, colors and shapes. Another option: the entire wall acts as a passe-partout - let the picture "sprout" through it. Pictures can be changed as often as you like. We alternate the season of handmades (knitted, thread, applique, patchwork works) with classic canvases, pointillist reproductions with a gallery of drawings of a beloved child. nine0011
Photos - in the bedroom you can hang ready-made photographs, prints of your own photo masterpieces, outstanding works of world photographers or the best shots from any Instagram. The home wall might feature Oscar selfies with Hollywood stars, Earthrise by William Anders, The Nameless Cowboy by Richard Prince, or the world's first outdoor photograph by Joseph Niepce. Something to remember: the smaller the original image, the worse the quality of the printed file will be. But since in the bedroom photographs serve only as a background, and not as an object of the opening day, it is quite possible to put up with pixelation. In addition to paper and wallpaper, foam board is a good basis for photography. An image rolled onto this light and dense material can be easily framed, mounted on a wall, placed on a floor or shelf. The most suitable option for the bedroom would be a monochrome or muted full-color gamut: for details, see the material “Light therapy as a cure for insomnia”. It is better to choose a matte finish, since the rays of the sun, the glare of lamps, TV and smartphone are sharply reflected from the glossy one. nine0011
Suspension structures – the garland or suspension principle is also suitable for designing a headboard. Decorative mobiles can be bought or made independently from braid and clothespins. The most interesting thing is what to choose as hanging elements. Ringing and rustling from the bedroom out. And cardboard, textile, leather, clay and plastic wall "charms" are ideal. You can hang mobiles from a rod mounted on a wall or ceiling. Temporary self-adhesive hooks are also suitable. We make sure that the pendants are located above the headboard, and do not have to touch them. Minus: mobiles are short-lived decorations, they quickly collect dust, fade, become an object of hunting for pets. nine0011
3d panels - most often they are aluminum structures mounted on a crate. The panels are covered with different materials - leather, film, plywood, paint - depending on what kind of original three-dimensional effect we want to get. As a result, over the bed you can create the illusion of a huge chocolate bar, a sandy beach, Lego figures, weaving, brickwork - almost any textured surface. 3d panels are easy to clean, last a long time, and provide sound insulation. And if you choose a more expensive option made of wood, then an almost natural area will appear in the bedroom. nine0011
Inscriptions, ornaments or details are structures that are not part of the image, but are attached as autonomous compositions to a wall or ceiling. Being voluminous, such a decoration perfectly masks the flaws in the finish and even the unevenness of the wall. There are many options: above the bed you can depict a bas-relief, letters, a specific inscription, an artistic composition, imitate a fence, a wall with a window, silhouettes ... Like mobiles, finely detailed structures quickly collect dust, but they are easier to clean - just walk over them with a soft brush. nine0011
Paint and wallpaper is another classic and affordable way to decorate your headboard. We highlight the wall behind the bed with a contrasting color from the rest of the perimeter and visually designate the territory of sleep. When choosing an ornament, we take into account that it is better to continue the vertical elements right at the joint with the ceiling and visually increase the height of the walls. And horizontal lines expand the space, but when choosing stripes, we don’t make them smaller: they can be different in width, but not narrow - it’s more comfortable for the eye. For small apartments where it is not possible to organize a separate bedroom, a single design of the wall and ceiling above the bed will be a convenient zoning option. We glue the wallpaper on the wall and continue the canvas on the ceiling. nine0011
Natural materials - bamboo, stones, wood, shells, marble, ceramics: take a look at these if your dream is a durable, textured eco-friendly design. But it is contraindicated in this case to act in the style of “one's own designer”. Despite their simplicity, natural materials require a subtle approach. Without professionals, the risk of crossing the line between beautiful and vulgar is too great.
Textile and leather is an excellent choice if you want to create a soft wall. For this decor, ready-made soft wall panels are sold. Upholstery options are different: leather, leatherette, velor, velvet, tapestry, suede, linen, silk and others. We pay attention to the filler. The most durable is polyurethane foam. Unlike foam rubber and synthetic winterizer, it does not collapse, does not sag, does not stray into lumps and does not exfoliate. In addition, polyurethane foam has better heat and sound insulation qualities. A wall upholstered with soft fabric requires regular care and careful handling: all stains remain on woven surfaces. Important: soft panels are installed on beds with or without a low headboard. And for upholstery, dense materials that are resistant to abrasion are mainly used. nine0011
Light sources - Today the market offers many versions of lighting design. Firstly, lighting options: lamps, lamps, lanterns, garlands, light paintings, LED strips, candles and others. Secondly, light locations: top, bottom, main, auxiliary, general or accent light. Thirdly, lighting design tools: temperature, softness, modes and lighting control. When arranging the bedside space, we remember not only beauty, but also convenience and safety. Wall cladding should not overheat from lamps, sconces and garlands. The switches are positioned so that you do not have to reach for them. The ideal option is to assemble lighting control on a remote control or in a smart home system. nine0011
Slate wall is both a decorative and functional interior element. The solution appeared in everyday life a few years ago, but still looks relevant, especially for the bedroom. A slate board can be used to decorate only part of the headboard. Or place it behind the bed with a large color block on the entire wall, which fashionably contrasts with the calm surroundings of the room. And, most importantly, with such a wall, at least every day you can change the mood of the bedroom, leaving new drawings and messages. Among the shortcomings: before the next creative impulse, the wall must be thoroughly washed, as chalk marks create a feeling of a dirty surface. nine0011
Canopy - as well as curtains, a screen and other textile draperies for the bed, seem already somewhat outdated, banal, but fans of the genre may well refresh it ideologically. How do you like the canopy in the form of a glass cube? Or an aluminum profile with high-tech blinds? You can also decorate the ceiling above the bed with a cloth or hang a snow-white roll in the form of a sail.
Shelves - the head of the bed is not suitable for mounting actively used furniture, but who prevents you from using its exposition possibilities? We install shelves, a rack or a niche as a decorative element: it will be a showcase, not a storage system. We place only stable objects in small quantities. And it is better to fix them all the same. We determine a comfortable height so that, sitting on the bed, do not rest your head on the shelf. We have all functional cabinets and cabinets on the sides of the bed. nine0011
Mirrors are a proven way to optically enlarge a space. If we want this effect for the bedroom, then the area around the head of the bed will be an ideal place for scenery. Dynamic Design: Grouping multiple mirrors of the same shape but different sizes, such as different rectangles. Or we lay out the wall with mirror tiles. Mono-approach: we place one large mirror in the center above the bed at a height of one and a half meters. Or we decorate the entire wall behind the bed with a mirror, zoning the headboard with a soft panel. nine0011
Hobbies - if you have a pile of old magazines and books, hockey sticks, plates, mugs, tins, baskets, postcards and other items that you collect or use all the time, everything can be put into the decoration a business. The area above the bed is even decorated with old oars, hats and tennis rackets. What is not a manifestation of respect for the world.
Of course, all elements can be combined: mirrors and panels, 3d and mobiles, slate boards and shelves, inscriptions and paintings… Combinations of what can be hung in the bedroom above the bed are limited only by our imagination, ideas about beauty and sense of proportion.
