Staircase Wall Art Ideas: Pro Tips
Design expert Yoko Chow, of Yoko Chow LLC, expands on this foolproof color palette:
“The combination of Illuminating yellow and Ultimate Gray may give you a very contemporary impression, but it can look traditional as well. You can combine [a neutral base] with modern yellow details by pairing an existing light gray interior with a piece of wall art which incorporates the Illuminating yellow shade."
If you’re trying to maintain a contemporary appearance, she warns against the overuse of yellow, and explains why you should balance it with a cool neutral like grey.
"While yellow is known to enhance one’s creativity and attention, having a vast area enveloped in yellow may cause an inability to focus since it is such an attention-grabbing color. [It’s much better as a splash of color.] Balance is the key!

How to Hang Wall Art Over Stairs - Home Ideas
Things You'll Need
The wall above the stairs is the perfect place for your art collection.
The empty space on the wall above the stairs is a gallery waiting in the wings. If you have a collection of photographs, posters, or framed paintings, a stair wall will do the trick. But without some planning, your vertical gallery can turn into a mess where nothing stands out and gives the impression of a mess. Follow a few simple visual cues to create a professional look and feel that your family and guests will love.
Step 1
Lay out the artwork to be hung and select the last pieces to hang on the wall. Look at their frames to see if anything is twitching. Matching or similar frames are symmetrical and proportional. An eclectic group of frames is okay. But a set of different wooden frames and one hot pink enamel frame won't work. In such a case, consider reformatting the piece or replacing it with something more appropriate.
Step 2
Decide on your center line. The center line is the middle of the artwork in relation to the floor. Most center lines are 55 to 60 inches tall. According to Stephen Roberts, an art installer in Washington DC, most people hang art too high. In an older antique home, he prefers to use a center point 60 inches from the top of the baseboard. Once you have determined your center line, measure each piece of art to find its center point.
Step 3
Measure the length of the ladder from top to bottom and figure out how to make a series of pieces evenly spaced as they go up the ladder. The center point of each piece should match the height of each step and your center line. Here you need to spend a little more time. Measure the height of the framed painting and divide it by two. Add this number to the height of the center line. At this point, stick a piece of tape on the wall and mark it. This is the top of the frame. Now stretch the wire taut on the back of the picture or painting and measure from the top of the frame to the top of the stretched wire. Subtract this distance from the tape mark and place another piece of marked tape in the spot where the picture hook needs to be hammered.
Step 4
Place the shovel or crook of the hook on the mark and drive the hook into the wall. Hang your artwork and adjust so it is level. Remove the tape. Keep checking for an equal distance and measuring to find the center line and hook point while you hang all the art. By working with the concept of the center line, you create a harmonious flow of visual art up the stairs.
Step 5
If you're hanging a mixed art gallery - like a photo collection - start by finding the middle of the stairs and the center line. Arrange the artwork around this central point in a balanced cluster, rather than at a great distance. Try laying out paper models on the floor to see where to place each piece, then glue the resulting configuration to the wall for last-minute adjustments before measuring and hanging the pieces. Gallery may be added as more photos or artwork are acquired. Adjust the art flow up and down the stairs using the center line measurements to accommodate the new items.
Note
It's worth the extra effort to outline the design on the scrap paper, cut it out and place it on the floor the way you want it, on the wall. You can tell right away if something is severely unbalanced. Refine the composition by attaching it to the wall with blue masking tape. Then step back to see if it works. The masking tape will come off the wall leaving no mess.
For frames over 24 inches wide, use two hooks equally spaced and as wide as the picture wire is stretched. This provides additional support and keeps the frame level after suspension.
Staircase in the interior: choosing paintings and decor
Staircase in the interior of the house is the most accessible place, moreover, one of the most difficult when decorating and selecting paintings. A non-standard angle, lack of light and a small area often lead to the fact that when decorating a house this space remains underestimated.
What should be taken into account when choosing decorations and paintings, so that the interior of a flight of stairs looks harmonious and at the same time spectacular? How to choose works of art for the wall near the stairs, we tell in the article.

Staircase interior design features
The wall near the stairs has its pros and cons. Its main advantage compared to walls in other rooms is the absence of furniture that you need to focus on, which means that there are more options for hanging pictures.
- firstly, a non-standard angle, which must be taken into account when arranging the decor;
- secondly, often a small area and poor natural light. In a narrow and dark space, interior decor is often in the shade, so many do not see the point in devoting time to it. This problem has a good solution - individual lighting. It not only adds light where it is lacking, but also creates a special atmosphere around the decor and allows you to see the details;
- thirdly, it is not always possible to find a point of direct view from a sufficient distance on the stairs - this creates, for example, a problem for placing and viewing large format paintings;
- Fourthly, there is a great specificity of placing several paintings above the stairs, since all the paintings are placed at different heights.

What to choose for decorating the stairs?
Staircase wall decor can vary from photos of family members and paintings to consoles, mirrors and flowers.

As a rule, the choice depends on:
- the interior style of the house. Modern abstractions in combination with English classics can look a little strange, like a classic landscape in a massive frame with gilding in a high-tech interior. At the same time, no one canceled the eclecticism and bold experiments of fusion. True, most likely, in this case, the help of a specialist will be required so as not to slide into kitsch.
- the role of stairs in the interior. If it is the central element of the interior, then two options are possible here: complete color and stylistic harmony or, conversely, contrast. Both solutions are correct.
If the task of visually highlighting the wall above the flight of stairs is not worth it, then you can stop at a laconic decor of a neutral color palette.

SMART tip: if you have a clear idea of what you want to place on the stairs, but do not understand how to do it correctly, contact a professional stylist or decorator who will help you put together the right and aesthetic composition of different elements .
If you are not a fan of complex compositions above the stairs, then maybe painting will suit you. Let's talk about the paintings along the stairs.
How to choose paintings for the stairs?
Combining the style of the painting with the style of decorating the rooms connected by the stairs is a delicate moment. The picture can support the overall style and be a link, or it can go against the grain and play the role of an accent.
Colors and subjects can be very different: from classical landscapes, still lifes and portraits to abstract and conceptual works by contemporary authors.

General recommendations
When choosing paintings for the wall of the stairs, you should consider the size of the flight of stairs and the wall above it. The picture should be proportional to the width of the stairs and the size of the wall.
“By the water”, artist Oleg Korchagin. Style — Alexandra Pylenkova (Happy Collection Studio), design — Ekaterina Yablokova.
On narrow, windowless stairs, designers recommend combining works of art with mirrors or stained glass to help visually enlarge the space.
If one work is placed on the stairs, it will be the main point of attraction, the semantic accent. When there are two, three or more paintings, you can play with space and organize them on the wall in different ways. In this case, two points should be remembered:
- firstly, to maintain balance, the angle of the central line of the wall gallery must coincide with the angle of the stairs;
- secondly, each work should be clearly visible during the ascent and descent.
At what height should the paintings be placed?
To resolve this issue, let's turn to the museum standard:
- Let's visually divide the picture horizontally and vertically in half.
- The center of the painting, where the lines converge, should be at eye level, that is, approximately 154-158 cm from the floor.
These figures are indicative and may be adjusted up or down depending on the height of those who live in the house.
The height of the room also affects the height of the paintings. If there are very high ceilings on the landing, then it would be advisable to place the paintings higher so as not to upset the balance of perception of the room.

Picture frame on the stairs
There are no strict rules on whether or not to frame a picture for stairs. At the same time, we, in turn, recommend not to neglect the baguette for better preservation of the work of art. The staircase is a passageway, which means that the probability of accidentally touching the picture is higher here. In the event of a fall, the corners of the picture will be protected by the frame from damage.

The choice of frame color and style depends on the style and color scheme of the staircase interior.
Staircase is an interesting and non-standard place in a private house. Properly selected and placed decor and art creates a special atmosphere that connects the floors.
