10 designs to give your room a style update |

Finding beautiful TV stand ideas is no easy feat, but fret not, it is certainly not impossible to create a statement scheme around your TV.

We've curated a selection of creative solutions to center a scheme around your TV stand that you can be proud of, whether that be alongside statement artwork, disguised within a wall storage, or blending into a dark background.

TV stand ideas

For most families, a TV is an essential tool for helping adults unwind, keeping the kids entertained, and facilitating movie nights. The problem is, it’s not the prettiest piece of interior décor – when switched off, it’s essentially a large black rectangle. Here, we showcase our favorite TV stand ideas to inspire your next entertainment center remodel.

One of the main challenges in a family room is how to deal with the tech. This is where built-in cabinet ideas for family rooms come into focus. A bespoke option hides all the wires, gives you super storage below and shelves for keepsakes on each side of the living room TV.

‘In this sitting room we wanted to maximize the storage without overwhelming the space. By removing the sides of the TV unit we managed to keep it light but retained the shelves and lower cabinets to maximize the storage,’ says Sara Cosgrove, co-founder of Sara Cosgrove Studio

A free-standing unit doubles as a room divider idea, creating a discreet office in this apartment living room – its open design allows light to flow freely through the space. The beauty of this type of living room storage idea is that it offers a tailor-made solution without the price tag of a bespoke design. Not only can it be put together to fit any size of room, but a statement piece can also act as a work of art.

‘The modular concept means that the furniture can be adjusted to suit all circumstances and combined in a variety of ways,’ says Ian Weddell, chief executive officer of USM Modular Furniture . Make sure your room dividers are positioned in an area where they are not likely to get knocked, particularly with children around, and look for ones that can be connected to the ceiling to provide more support.

3. Provide a central storage area

(Image credit: Richard Powers)

To keep things simple, why not create one central storage and display area for your small living rooms storage ideas.

In this cozy and inviting living room, the wooden shelving and cabinet design act as the main storage and media unit in the space. Even though the design is a large piece, by having one central storage and display area in the room, you can create a lot more space for seating, other furniture pieces, lighting and accessory designs.

Technology is an important factor in most family living room ideas, from Wi-Fi access to background music, and the trend is towards totally concealed solutions. Although many modern systems claim to be wireless, there’s no getting away from charging docks, routers and aerials, all of which require cables.

To keep these hidden, incorporate dedicated spaces for all the media you use within your small living room storage ideas, specifying small insets in the backs of shelves and cupboards to allow cables to run behind fittings.

If you are fitting a wall of storage that incorporates a space for your living room TV, allow sufficient room should you decide to invest in a larger model. Try not to create too big a gap, as your television will look awkwardly small.

5. Go entirely bespoke

(Image credit: Paul Raeside / Future)

Historical archives inspired Melissa Bolivar of design firm House of Sui Sui when creating this cosseting space.

'The room was designed to be an immersive experience with the walls, cabinetry, sofa and rug all in tones of teal and aquamarine; the result is incredibly impactful,' says Melissa. 'Here, a clever combination of hidden and open storage works beautifully around a TV, which has been built-into the space.'

6. Blend it into the background

(Image credit: Paul Raeside / Future)

Don't let a TV stand spoil your living room aesthetic. Here, the TV blends beautifully into the bespoke wood wall paneling of this white and brown living room without interrupting the earthy aesthetic.

‘We will often do built-in cabinetry and TV stands to frame the TV, or an enclosed sideboard with shelf options,’ says interior designer Claudia Afshar . ‘This allows you to keep playthings nearby, without compromising aesthetic.’

7. Opt for a freestanding unit

(Image credit: Paul Raeside / Future)

Modern life requires that the family room of the home fulfil a multitude or functions – from offering somewhere to relax and dine to office space, so well-planned living room TV ideas are the key to a practical scheme.

If space is at a premium, opt for a striking free-standing TV stand to help ensure this room meets your every need. If there’s one thing that’s going to create the illusion of more space in a small living room, it’s investing in the right, slimline furniture – it can actually make a room feel wider in seconds.

Not only is a freestanding TV stand more affordable than a bespoke fitted one, it's an easy and cost-effective way to update an existing.

8. Put it on full display

(Image credit: Jessica Bennett of Alice Lane Interior Design, photography by Nicole Hill Gerulat)

While the TV stand is the main focus in this room, it doesn't distract from the rest of the space. In fact, the TV looks like a piece of art.

'In this relaxed family room, the slimline TV has been beautifully framed by a collection of objects,' says Jessica Bennett of Alice Lane Interior Design . 'We wanted to create a large TV stand which also plenty of storage that plays host to favorite decorative room pieces.'

9. Build a storage wall

(Image credit: Davide Lovatti)

If you don't want to completely hide away your TV but also don't want it to be the central focus in a room, positioning it in an area surrounded by other decorative objects and display pieces will take the attention away from the item.

In this bright and colorful family room, the wall to ceiling storage and display unit is a stand out feature in the space. Painted in bright colors and filled with an eclectic mix of objects and design pieces, the smaller TV is simply part of this beautiful collection of items, rather than being the central focus.

10. Paint your TV stand the same color as the wall

(Image credit: Jonathan Bond Photography)

A carefully considered color clashing combination can create a TV stand that truly sings with joy. This is a space for both socializing and retreat, so you want shades that both enliven and comfort you. ‘Pink and green is one of my favorite color combination in rooms – they play really well off each other and it’s a great way to cheer up a room,’ says Lucy Barlow, founder, Barlow & Barlow .

A TV stand surrounded by storage is a practical solution and can be softened with the addition of books and favorite pieces. Paint your living room shelving in a statement color to standout rather than hide it away.

Remember, the best TV and TV stand options for your home, are the ones that suit your individual needs, so don't be swayed by any one else.

What can I use instead of a TV stand?

There are many options to use if you don't want to invest in a traditional TV stand. While a glass media stand is a cost-effective and easy option, it certainly won't enhance the style of a space.

There are a plethora of beautiful options that are worth investing in instead. We love the idea of using an antique chest of drawers as a TV stand for your bedroom TV ideas, or if your space is on the smaller side, a slimline console table will work wonders. A bookcase, shelf or sturdy bench are all other space-savvy options.

Wall mounted TV shelf is a modern solution for your appliances. It is important to choose the right material and place it correctly. Find out all the nuances you need to know about.

0024 What are shelves?

Wall mounted TV shelf may look different, made of different materials.

There are three main purposes that it can perform in the interior:

Appointments can often be combined. In some cases, a shelf can serve all three at once.

Convenient TV Shelf

When trying to imagine a shelf that will perfectly fit your TV, you must first determine what it will look like in terms of construction. There are several varieties - each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Hanging structure

Next, you need to understand what material the shelf will be made of.

After all, structural features determine little, except for the aesthetic impression. But the material from which the shelf is made affects the main performance characteristics.

Bracket - support piece

Shelves made of chipboard and MDF

Chipboard and MDF are considered synthetic materials, although they are made of wood.

Chipboard is made of sawdust and wood chips, which are compressed under high pressure using synthetic resins.

Chipboard shelf will have the following advantages:

Corner design

Chipboard does not look very aesthetically pleasing and, if not manufactured according to technological requirements, it will release fumes that are poisonous to humans.

Tip

Chipboard shelf should only be installed as a temporary solution. Or if the entire design of the house is made using the cheapest materials possible.

MDF is slightly higher class. It is used for wood waste, chips and small debris, which are mixed with resin, heated, stirred to a homogeneous mass and pressed into sheets under high pressure.

Modern style

MDF shelf will have the following advantages:

Not bulky option

There are only two minuses:

MDF with chipboard can be given the appearance of any natural material - this allows a protective coating that provides them with stability and can be of any color. On closer examination, the difference, of course, will be noticeable, but if you do not look closely, it is quite possible to be deceived.

Advice

If you want to install a TV in a bedroom where no one but you is really there, and the air humidity is low, MDF or chipboard will suit you.

Large room version

Made of wood

If you don't look closely, a shelf made of MDF or chipboard can go behind a wooden shelf. But their performance characteristics are still somewhat different.

Wood has the following advantages:

Wooden variant

Properly treated - and therefore somewhat more expensive - wood is also insensitive to moisture and biological irritants, and cannot leave splinters.

But even he has disadvantages:

A wooden shelf can last for many years

Metal

Metal is a very original solution for any interior, especially if left unpainted, shiny. It does not suit all styles, it gives the room a somewhat cold, austere look. Has several benefits:

Hi-tech

It also has disadvantages:

Metal and glass

The metal structure fits perfectly into the high-tech style, which is all combinations of glass and metal. It will look good in minimalism, in futurism, it will take root in the loft . But trying to insert it into country style, American style, eco and others, referring to closeness with nature, village life, natural materials, is not worth it.

Tip

When choosing metal as a material, make sure that it is of high quality. Low price, lack of a certificate, a seller who does not have positive reviews - all this may indicate that the design will fail very quickly. Rust, bend or simply fall.

Metal does not attract dust

Glass shelves

Glass is no less original material than metal. Fitting it into the interior is just as difficult. It has advantages:

Glass - original material

There are also disadvantages:

A thin sheet of glass can withstand a lot of weight

Unlike chipboard, metal, wood, glass can be very different in price and quality.

Allocate:

Compact version with metal and glass elements

Triplex costs the most, acrylic and sheet glass the least.

Tip

Glass goes well with both metal and wood. It will look best in hi-tech, but can also look good in more classic styles.

How to decorate shelves?

Having imagined what kind of structure the shelf should have and what material it should be made of, it remains only to decide how it will be decorated.

Classic style

Commonly used:

In white

The idea of placing additional shelves around the main TV shelf and placing accessories on them is also a success - they will be better visible than the patterns or carvings .

These can be:

Small wooden shelf

In addition to the most common options, you can arrange basically anything around the TV - books, collectible figures of comic book characters, a beaded tree, origami complex structure.

Tip

You can decorate not the shelf itself, not additional shelves, but the wall behind them, near the TV. There you can hang a piece of photo wallpaper, a poster with a movie star or a rock band, draw graffiti there. Of course, such liberty is not suitable for all styles, but it will fit perfectly into a loft, for example.

Minimalist style

Lighting also plays an important role in shelf design. It is able to highlight the entire corner with the TV.

Most commonly used:

The LED strip can serve as a night light if you use it in the bedroom or nursery.

Combination of design for books and TV

home. First of all, you should consider in which room the shelf will be located.

If it is a kitchen, there are a number of factors to consider:

Living room interior wall

If this is a living room, the shelf requirements are lower. It is necessary to take into account only the aesthetic question. The whole family gathers in the living room, guests come to it. If this is not so important in the kitchen, then in the living room a shelf should be an ideal part of the interior. All materials are suitable for such conditions, except for chipboard, which looks too budget.

There are no requirements at all in the bedroom - this is a personal space, you can even put chipboard in it, if it suits you completely.

In the interior of the bedroom

But in the case of a child, the requirements for a shelf are no less strict than in the kitchen - but they are of a different kind.

The following factors must be taken into account:

It is clear that a metal shelf is suitable only if it has rounded smooth lines, and glass, most likely, will not work at all, if you do not take expensive, reinforced.

In the loft style

Tip

Additional shelves should be placed around the TV in the nursery - the child will definitely find what to put on them. From a collection of designers to your favorite plush toys.

TVs perform different tasks in all rooms, so the requirements for shelves are slightly different:

In the interior of the kitchen

In the interior of a children's room

When the decision is made, it remains only to place the TV on the wall without violating the rules of operation.

lSafety

In order not to spoil your eyesight, you need to follow simple rules when placing the TV:

Non-standard solution for TV installation

The exception is the TV in the kitchen, which is not so much watched as listened to. But if your kitchen also acts as a living room, and you like to watch the news while eating, it’s better to put it downstairs, at eye level.

And in order not to say goodbye to expensive equipment too soon, the rules are different.

Do not hang the TV in the following places:

Otherwise, you can place the TV and the shelf under it according to your own taste - in the corner, in the center of the composition, in a large niche, in the end wall ...

how to make it yourself, how to install it, where to put it

Due to its variety of shapes and materials, the TV shelf on the wall has not only a functional purpose, but also harmoniously fits into the design solution of the whole room. By placing the TV on the wall, space is saved, and a stylish aesthetic appearance is obtained. Sets of modern shelves include brackets for mounting it, as well as a cable channel to hide all the wires. Such products are used not only for TV, but also for placing other interior items. On large surfaces, you can put everything together: a TV with vases, paintings and other decor.

The picture clearly shows the standard and running wall shelf. It is simple and, at the same time, aesthetic. It will complement absolutely any design style, in this case it fits perfectly into the minimalist style

Types of wall shelves

the right angle. For old “boxes”, overall and most durable structures are provided, for modern plasma TVs - cutoffs up to 15 cm. Figuratively, wall mounts can be divided into: simple and swivel. Simple ones can be made with your own hands and the equipment on them will be located strictly in a straight line. Tilting are branded products and involve placing the TV at the desired angle so that you can watch programs from any angle that is convenient for you.

The main types of TV wall shelves are as follows:

  1. Furniture wall. Ready-made furniture design with a place for a TV and many other additional shelves and drawers. This is the most common TV location.
  2. A series of closed cabinets and shelves. Outwardly similar to a furniture wall, only they can be moved and mounted on the wall in any order according to your taste.
  3. Open shelves. The usual straight cut of the board without frills is very convenient and quite cheap.
  4. Cabinet shelf. A rational solution for placing TV with an additional bedside table below will help to place other items in it (magazines, tuners).
  5. Plasterboard shelves (niches). Such designs can be given any shape, set backlight and a chic place under the TV is provided.
  6. Contrasting panels made of plastic, planks, marble, stone. They focus on themselves so much that the TV fades into the background.

In front of you is a shelf-cabinet of overall size that allows you to hold not only

The classic look of a wall unit is shown in this photo. It combines drawers, small cabinets, perfectly in harmony with the open area, where DVD and TV are located.
Pluses include:

  • Space saving;
  • Aesthetic, modern look;
  • Out of reach prevents children and animals from reaching.

Cons include:

  • A badly mounted flat may cause the TV to fall beyond repair;
  • The location of the shelf above/below eye level contributes to their rapid fatigue;
  • Need special tools and professionals to install this design.

This picture shows a stylish image and, alas, the wrong placement of the TV shelf, which is below eye level, which will cause overstrain and gradual loss of vision

Where to put the shelf

It's not a good idea to just take and attach TV shelves anywhere. There are several tips for choosing the placement of this functional piece of furniture.
Prohibited places:

  1. Niches or any other enclosed space;
  2. Wall above fireplace,
  3. Area above stove or other heating appliances.

Allowed (recommended) seats:

  • The distance from the TV screen to the viewing position must be four diagonal sizes;
  • The shelf board must be 1 meter from the bottom;
  • When installing, you should take into account the location of the sofa, which should be placed strictly opposite or at an angle of 30 degrees in relation to the future TV.

A typical example of how not to place TV shelves. A heating device, in this case, a fireplace, can damage electrical equipment without subsequent repair. But modern designers, for some reason, ignore this nuance.

The photo shows a TV niche made of drywall. Such placement of equipment is also inappropriate, besides it does not coincide with the fashion trend

How to install the shelf

Factory open TV shelves have hinges. To mount to a wall of this design, you need to prepare anchors with dowels, a drill or a puncher (if the wall is reinforced concrete).

According to the markings, drill holes in the wall with a strong pressure of the hammer drill. Insert dowels tightly into them, into which then screw the anchor bolts. Put loops on the anchor design.

Here you can see how the marking is done correctly, for the subsequent drilling of a hole of the desired diameter. The diameter of the hardware is compared with the markings on the wall

Production material

Shelf for TV is subdivided according to its shape:

  • with legs;
  • straight;
  • cabinet shelf;
  • mounted;
  • complex configurations.

Based on the shape you have in mind, the shelves are made from different materials: wood, glass, plasterboard, metal, stone and plastic. You can independently make a place under the TV from drywall and wood. All other types of material are subject only to the hands of professionals.

Classic wooden hanging shelf. Made in the style of minimalism, contrastingly complements the bright image of the entire living room. Able to withstand TV, decor and other items

How to make a TV shelf with your own hands

It is not difficult to make a standard wooden TV shelf on the wall.

The drawing of this design is to place the TV on top of the shelf, and the tuner and other items can be placed inside

  1. Materials for manufacturing. Wood is the most convenient option for this idea, and it is also easy to process. Shelf structures made of such material are: corner, hanging, closed, open. To implement the model in question, we choose a dry, perfectly flat board. In addition to the main workpiece with a thickness of 16 mm, you will need additional tools for installation: a hacksaw (jigsaw), drill, level, ruler, pencil, brackets, self-tapping screws, dowels, stain and varnish.
  2. We draw up a drawing, perform calculations. The future functional decor will be of a standard form, have a top, bottom and two sides. The size of the structure is 250x300x1100 mm. Place the boards on a flat surface and transfer the drawing to them with a pencil and ruler. Be sure to add 1.6 cm for allowances for fastening.
  3. Sawing and processing. Place one edge of the board on a chair, the other will be in space. Cut off the unnecessary part with a jigsaw. Everything, do the same with other boards, getting two long and two short ones. Coat the edges with stain and varnish.
  4. Assembly. After complete drying, proceed to assembly. On the bottom and top board, a pair of holes for self-tapping screws are drilled at the edges. Then the sides are attached to the lower part with the help of self-tapping screws, covered with the upper blank and also twisted with hardware. The back side can be processed with a sheet of plywood.
  5. How to overcome vibration? Factory shelves, for example glass, are initially endowed with a vibration damping system. And, here, in order to get rid of the vibrations of wooden shelves, you need to equip them with small turning wheels, silicone layers, metal needles. To reduce vibration to a minimum, spikes-needles are set very sharp.
  6. How to hang a shelf yourself? Metal brackets are attached to the back of the structure or at its ends. Drill holes in the wall strictly horizontally for self-tapping screws. Insert dowels into the resulting cavity and screw self-tapping screws into them so that their edge protrudes by 0.5-0.7 mm. Put the TV shelf with brackets on the screws. Ready.

Here is a fragment of the calculations for the future shelves. All measurements are carefully calculated and recorded on a separate sheet of paper. Only then draw a diagram of the future mounting structure

Staining is the easiest step. By lightly pressing the brush on the polished surface, the mixture is evenly distributed. The stain should be applied gradually from one edge to the other

The photo shows the assembly process, namely: screws are screwed into the boards with a screwdriver, thus fastening the side parts to the bottom of the workpiece. The tool is held strictly horizontal
